Can not open in safe mode

I can not open in safe mode.  It launches Utilities instead.
I tried to reinstall Mavericks but it stalled for over an hour.
I found a loose kernel in my HD fielder and deleted it.
Anny ideas?  Thanks.
Allan

Using Safe Mode. What happens with a normal boot - same thing? If so then your startup volume needs to be reformatted and you need to reinstall OS X.
Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
  2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
  3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
  4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should install the version of OS X that you had installed.

  • I have no navigation bar and firefox will not open in safe mode to reset to default config. Reinstalling doesn't work. Any help please.

I have no navigation bar ever since I closed it to gain more space on the screen. It won't re-open. Firefox will not open in safe mode, but opens immediately in normal mode with the new improper config, so I cannot reset to default config. I erased Firefox and re-installed and it still opens with the same faulty config. Why does Firefox not give me the safe mode dialog box, why can I not re-open the nav bar, and how can I do these two things, please? Firefox is currently unusable for me without a nav bar and without access to the default settings in safe mode. I cannot research the extensions I'm running since I have no nav bar to go to Tools, Add-ons, Extensions.

Recently FF3 started crashing when opening. It will not open in safe mode as well. I have uninstalled it including deleting the install folder and profile folders as well as registry entries. Upon reinstallation is will still not launch in any mode.
I have scanned for malware with several scanners and that has not found anything.

Firefox worked fine last night. No changes/downloads but today it keeps crashing when opening. I downloaded new 3.6 version for mac but same problem. Tried to open in safe mode by going to the terminal and typing /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -safe-mode but nothing happens. Tried to see my crash reports as per the mozilla (/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Crash Reports/submitted) but the folders don't exist.

  • Error 404, website not found. Uninstalled, installed, firewall fixed to allow programs. Will not open in safe mode.

Google chrome works fine, but Firefox gets an error code 404. Windows Firewall is configured to allow the program, I have uninstalled/reinstalled, and it won't open, not even in safe mode. Still a 404 code. The same thing is happening to Safari. I can't fix settings in Firefox if it doesn't open. Any other suggestions?

Once Firefox is open, if you press Ctrl+n to open a new window, does it show the same error or does it work and show your home page?
'''No! I get the same error.''' Check your home page setting as the URL may be corrupted. These articles should point the way:
    * [[Startup, home page and download settings]]
    * [[How to set the home page]]
    Any improvement?
'''Yes! That works.''' Check for a hijacked shortcut. Here's how:
Right-click your Firefox shortcut/icon > Properties > Shortcut tab. The "Target" for 32-bit Windows 7 should be this (no more, no less):
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
If anything else follows that, remove it. Save your change and test the icon again.

  • Can't open in safe mode / clear cache because firefox is frozen

I tried to load a page that seems to have had a buggy embedded video ad, and now Firefox is stuck. It stops responding, but when I force quit and reopen, it opens the offending page again too, and it freezes again. I've tried restarting my computer, and reinstalling Firefox, and the problem keeps happening. I can't follow the advice I've seen here about opening in Safe MOde or clearing my cache, because Firefox freezes before I can do that. I there a way to do these from outside Firefox? I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.8 if that matters.
    Thanks!

  • Firefox crashes whether or not opened in Safe Mode

I removed several programs of what I thought were bloatware on my PC a few weeks ago, but have not been able to operate Firefox since.
I have tried a System Restore, I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling Firefox 10 numerous times.
When trying to open Firefox whether by usual operation or in Safe Mode, it still crashes.

Uninstalled 10.0.1, installed 10.0.2 and tried to 'Launch Firefox' directly from install. Crash. Tried to open in safe mode. Crash.
Tried to retrieve crash report ID, Windows Search tells me nothing matches
    "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted" when I search it.
Otherwise I would have provided that information.

  • Upgraded to newest version of Firefox all the links were broken, it will not open in Safe Mode or anywhere else-before I uninstall it I'd like to access save my user names and and passwords from websites- can i access them without opening the browser

i can not launch browser toget version info or anything else, when it upgraded to newest version it stopped working-i've tried launching in Safe Mode and have tried all icons

You can save a copy of your passwords file, but I don't think you can open it without Firefox.
Your passwords file is in your profile folder. You might want to make a backup copy of the whole folder. Info on locating the folder: [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles Profiles | How to | Firefox Help].
You may want to try reinstalling Firefox 3.6. You can download the installer from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older

  • Firefox will not start, will not open in safe mode, and still will not work after clean reinstall, Mac/OSX

One moment I was using Firefox the same as I always have. The only difference was that I changed the preferences to erase history when quitting Firefox. When trying to open the program again, it is immediately unresponsive. I attempted opening it in safe mode and a window will appear but never load, and Firefox remains unresponsive. I could not reset Firefox either. I deleted the application and re-downloaded Firefox, but it changed nothing. I am in OSX 10.7.4. Can anyone help?

Hello chillman4130, try to create a new profile(in case that you profile is corrupted), go (with closed firefox...... it is anyway) to /Applications/Utilities > Open the Terminal application > in the Terminal application, enter the following:
    * /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -p
    Press Return
the above opens Profile Manager, if the profile manager open then see : [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles#w_creating-a-profile Creating a profile]
then see: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Recovering%20important%20data%20from%20an%20old%20profile Recovering important data from an old profile]

  • Downloaded latest Firefox version. Firefox will not open in safe mode. Consistent crash report.

Responded to upgrade notice for Firefox 11. Downloaded and installed following directions. Message about RealPlayer add in needing manual update. No other errors with install. Displays crash reporter when opening. In safe mode, also displays crash reporter. Will not open. Unable to do anything in Firefox. This note is written in IE.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
    * https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • I can not find the safe mode option

Once again, my address bar had vanished. This time, the option is still checked to display it, and turning it off and on again does nothing. The help pages suggest going into Safe Mode to fix this, but the .exe is not in my Mozilla folder. I tried searching for it using Start>Search, but got nothing.
At the same time this happened, all my buttons (default and custom) were removed from my menu bars and returned to the customise window.
    What can I do please?
    TIA

    You're welcome

  • Can not boot in safe mode or from install disk

Having major issues. MBP getting stuck at a blue screen after the gray apple screen. Tried pressing and holding shift key while starting for safe mode and still goes to blue screen. Tried holding c key and starting with sl install disk in drive and still goes to blue screen. Issue started with continous cycle back to login screen from my main user account and due to my stupidity of turning on automatic login from a admin test account (thinking I could trick it), I am now in this vicious cycle.
And no I don't have a bootable clone. I just updated to SL and like an lazy idiot didn't go ahead and make my bootable clone.
FYI I do have a timecapsule with a week old or so backup.
    Any suggestions?

having a time capsule with TM backups is certainly good. you can always restore your system from it in a pinch.
do you have a firmware password set perhaps? it would preclude booting in safe mode or from the dvd using "c". reboot and hold option at the chime. this should boot you into startup disk manager where you can choose to boot from the DVD.
if you do have a firmware password set it will ask you to enter the firmware password before letting you use the startup disk manager.

  • Firefox crashes at startup, can't open in safe mode either

Problem started yesterday, can't open firefox at all.

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.
#Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
#In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
#From that explorer window, double-click on the ''Mozilla'' folder, then double-click on ''Firefox'' and then on ''Crash reports''. Double-click on ''submitted''.
#Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to ''View'' > ''Arrange Icons by'' > ''Modified'' to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
#Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID with '''bp-''' into the reply window on the forums.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Firefox will not open, it goes right to crash reporter, and it will not open in safe mode(crash reporter again).

I added adblock, that seemed to work OK. The same day I was tracking down slow download speeds with my ISP and they had me go to, I think...I can't remember to well, the tools menu and erase cookies, passwords, etc. I don't remember what else was erased,
in order to "speed up my browser". Maybe I shouldn't have blindly done that. Anyway, when I tried to start Firefox it just goes straight to the crash reporter. It opens fine under Admin and other users.

Uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox doesn't usually solve anything, because most problems are contained in the profile.
