Can not open iTunes - window says "...created by a newer version of iTunes.

ITunes will not launch....I've been using iTunes with the same settings for over a year. Suddenly today I go to launch iTunes and get the message: The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. How do I fix this so I can get back to using iTunes. I need it desperately for work.

I don't know if this works with Windows, the error occurred on my MAC and I poked around the iTunes folder because I didn't want to be forced to reinstall iTunes.
If you have a folder "Previous iTunes Libraries" under your iTunes folder, you are in luck. Inside that folder is a backup of the last iTunes Libraries. If you copy that into your iTunes folder, rename the current iTunes Library, then rename the file you copied to iTunes Library, it will open - at least it did for me.
Good luck!

Hi--I can't get itunes to open because it says "the file cannot be opened because it was created by a newer version of itunes." I have installed newest versions of Windows & itunes recently, as the troubleshooter instructed, to no avail...Help!!!

This error prevents iTunes from launching. The library file was modified to work with the newer iTunes version, so it is no longer compatible with the previous version. The good news, however, is that Apple does backup the iTunes library file into a subdirectory that you can use to revert back to the previous version.
To recover a previous version of the iTunes Library.itl file, use the following steps:
Open up your My Documents\My Music folder.
We will first backup the current version. Rename iTunes Library.itl to something like iTunes Library.itl.bak.
Go into the My Documents\My Music\Previous iTunes Libraries folder.
You may see several files that start with iTunes Library and have a date included in the name. Copy the newest file in the folder.
Go back to the My Documents\My Music and paste the file from the previous step.
Rename the new copied file to iTunes Library.itl.
Your library should now be restored to the previous version of iTunes, and you should no longer receive the message.

I get this message, "can not read because it was created by a newer version" I restored twice at different dates and uninstalled all apple stuff and reinstaled it again. Still nothing   Help John

That message is usually a sign that you tried to roll back to an earlier build of iTunes, but occasionally I've seen it connected to a new upgrade. This technique should fix things.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • I ran a System Restore on my Windows XP notebook and now iTunes won't open. It says something about my "iTunes library being created in a new version of iTunes".

I ran a System Restore in my Windows XP notebook and now iTunes will not open. The message: The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. What can I do about this?

Depending on the iTunes settings and where the music is downloaded from, by default, it is stored in C:\...\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\. So, if you need to backup, that would be the folder you want to grab.
However, uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes doesn't affect that folder, so if you have to remove and reinstall it you should not lose any music (although backups are always a good idea).
In reinstalling, I'd recommend opening your Control Panel and going into Add or Remove Programs, and removing the following:
    1. Apple Mobile Device Support
    2. Apple Software Update
    3. Bonjour
    4. iPod for Windows (if it exists)
    5. iTunes
    6. QuickTime
Then, restart the computer, and download/install iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/. This should ensure that the appropriate version of all related software is installed, and everything is in sync.

  • Need to recover old playlists, old iTunes library will not open because it was created by a newer version?

I have a Mac mini, have installed iTunes on it and want to find some old playlists that were lost.  I have several 'iTunes Libraries' with different dates but I cannot open any of them becauseit says they were created with a newer version of iTunes.  Please help!

Somewhere in your process you ended up with an earlier version of iTunes than was used last with the library. iTunes 10.6.3 is the highest version that will run under OSX 10.5.8
    iTunes 10.6.3.25 - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1575
If you had an earlier version and still want that version I am not sure how to go about this.  My iTunes library file does not say it was created with a particular version, although I admit I have not looked at the .xml copy to see if it is buried in the file itself.  Apple only has a very limited number of iTunes versions openly posted, though you can still find just about any version if you look in the right places.  You would have to kind of start low and work your way up to where you want to be since once you open a library with a version it cannot be reverted to an earlier version (make backups first).

If you still have an issue you may have to see about using the iTunes version (application) included with Snow Leopard 10.6 from the installer or an another one if available online, and see if that will install.
Sometimes you may have uninstall the bits left in your system by the earlier (or later) iTunes installers; as they all leave a trace and these can stop a different version of iTunes from being installed.
Not sure if the following site/link will tell the method...

If you've already installed the latest version then the message may be a sign of a corrupt library. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.

  • My Itunes library will not open becuase of being created with a newer version

I did create the library with a newer version of itunes, i did this so that i could drag songs from a folder i had on this computer earlier. Now it will not open. I need help quick cause i would love to be able to drag these songs over s they will be on my iphone. HELP!

    Let me get this right...
You have an iTunes library which you are now trying to use with a version prior to one that you were using, correct? Why?
Why don't you use the most up-to-date version of iTunes?
If you try using version 10.0 (for example), then anything iTunes has sorted out using 10.5 will not be recognised by 10.0, which is why you get the message.  Apple's advice is to always use the most up-to-date version of iTunes.

  • ITunes will not open on Windows Vista after upgrading to new version

After installing the latest version, my iTunes will not open. I have uninstall and reinstall two times and still nothing, any suggestions or tips?

King Penguin set you on the right track. It's probably security software not recognizing the new version of itunes, and blocking it.

  • My iTunes library will not open because it was created with a newer version

When I try to open iTunes I get the following error message.
"The file iTunes.itl cannot be read because it was cretaed by a newer version of iTunes.

Update it seems to be version 6.05 which is showing up when I check via my Computer.
i've seen this happen every now and then if an install doesn't go through properly ... the library files get updated, but the program files don't get touched.
let's try another itunes 7.0.2.16 install. we'll take a few additional explicit precautions this time.
download and save a fresh copy of the itunes installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    iTunes 7.0.2.16 Installer
if that install goes through properly, does itunes launch for you again?

I have the same problem. Nothing has changed. I can;t update I can only quit. Is there a way to re-load iphoto

  • I can not open iphoto window says it is incomplete or damaged

There is a "do not enter" (cirlce with a diagonal line) sign over my iphoto.  when i try to open it says iphoto can open, damaged or incomplete. Help!

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't then the problem lies with your current library. In that case if you have the space available on your hard drive and don't aready have a backup copy of the library make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • "iTunes Library" can't be read, it was created by a newer version of iTunes

I just installed iTunes 9.1. I'm running OS X 10.5.8. When I try to open iTunes, I get the above message that it can't read the file "iTunes Library." The result is iTunes can't be opened at all. When I connect my iPhone to the system, iTunes opens normally. Any ideas on how to fix the problem? Thanks.

you could try if completely removing iTunes (and reinstalling it) helps. click here and follow the instructions.
get the latest version from here http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
also, sometimes it helps to remove and reinstall the "Apple Mobile Device Service". click here and follow those instructions.
another option would be to fire up iTunes in _*iTunes Safe Mode*_ to see if that fixes things.
