Can not see ext HD on airport utility screen

Anyone know what might be wrong.  Also I can not use my external HD to wirelessly backup via Time machine.  Thanks

Suggest the following:
Check the formatting on the drive. It needs to be Mac OS Extended Journaled. Unless the box indicates that the drive is specifically formatted for Mac, it is likely pre-formatted for Windows NTFS or FAT32, which will not work.
The USB port on the AirPort Extreme tends to be under powered, so a powered USB hub is often required when you attach a drive at this location....even if the drive has its own power supply
Be reminded that Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme are not supported by Apple. Some users seem to be able to make this work, some have some limited success and some have no success with this, so keep an eye on thihgs if you decide to try this.

  • Can not see wireless TM in disk utility or desktop.

Am I running a TM Airport (router) it runs great, I love everything about it and the backups have no issues.
But I wanted to partition my 500mb drive on my TM yet for some reason I can not see the drive either on my desktop or in disk utility. Is there some setting I need to change somewhere else to be able to view this wireless drive and configure it? I looked via Airport Utility and the only option there is to archive or erase it, at least that can see it.
When the backup starts I do see a mounted drive show up.
    Any ideas?

It does not show up because when I am not backing up, it gets disconnected...

  • Macbook can't see time capsule through airport utility; powerbook can.

This question probably applies to Airport Extremes as well as Time Capsules, but I happened to see it with a new TC.
My Time Capsule came in yesterday. My plan was to bridge it into my existing network to serve 802.11n over 5ghz. I did the initial setup using a 12" powerbook and it worked fine. I set the Time Capsule in bridge mode and for 802.11n 5ghz, plugged it into my network, and reset. The light on the TC turned green and all looked like it was working. At least, until I tried to connect through my Macbook Pro.
I installed the Airport Utility software that came with the TC, rebooted, then launched Airport Utility -- and it couldn't find any devices. It can, however, see the Airport's wireless network. After a reboot of the TC, it can also connect to the Airport's wireless network. I can get to the internet and the local network, but cannot see the Airport through Airport Utility and cannot see the Time Capsule disk. It's as if Bonjour is being blocked between my laptop and the Airport. This happens whether I'm connected to the TC wirelessly or wired.
I've tried restoring to factory defaults and starting over (I still can't see the TC, even after a hard reset) and I've tried a hard reset of the TC (I had to, actually -- it hung during startup several times). In each case, the powerbook can see it, but the macbook can't. I'm out of things to try. If I can't get this resolved soon, I'm going to have to return the TC, since it's useless if I can't access the disk.
I was planning on upgrading the two computers to Leopard over the weekend, then use the TC for Time Machine for both computers, but if it's not working for Tiger I'm worried that it won't work for Leopard, either.
Is there any variable anyone knows of that blocks a computer from seeing an base station through the Airport Utility? A non-obvious firewall setting, perhaps, or something that could be blocking Bonjour? Does Airport detection even use Bonjour, or am I on the wrong track?
    Thanks

An update: I can see the Airport configuration of the TC through my Macbook if I pick File->Configure Other... on the Airport Utility, and then put in the IP address. Which leads me to believe that it's a Bonjour issue, but I haven't figured out more than that.
Of course, the TC is still useless for Time Machine if I can't get to the disk, so the problem remains.

  • Can not get relay working. Airport utility gets confused!

I am trying to help my friend setup his two Airport Extremes, using one as a relay. I am not sure what the model numbers they are because I am back at my home right now and I do not have access to them. They are both white and they both have USB ports.
I spent about four hours last night trying to set up one of the base stations as a relay with no success. I kept getting an error message (in the network system preferences control panel) on the one that I was trying to set up as a relay that said it could not connect to the internet because it was using a self-assigned IP address. I could not figure out where is was pulling the IP address from. It was in a range much different than what it should have been. I was expecting to see something in the range of 10.0.0.5 and it was using an IP address that began with 67.x.x.x. Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem?
While I was trying to program the base stations I named them "Downstairs" and "Upstairs" so I could easily tell them apart. While trying to set up the relay it seemed like the Airport Admin Utility (version 4.2 under Panther) kept getting confused as to which one it was programing. I would change certain settings on one of the base stations and after quitting out of the utility and reopening it I would notice that the settings got applied to the wrong one. This happened numerous times and I can assure you that it was not a user error.
Some basic questions about how the Airport relay works.
When a relay is setup and working properly how does the network appear in the airport signal meter in the menu bar, do I see both airports or do I just see the main airport? If when the relay is setup properly you only see the main airport (instead of seeing the actual name of the relay airport in the menubar) how can you tell which airport you are actually connecting to?
If you walk around the house with a laptop will the computer automatically connect to the strongest airport signal or will it lock into just one of them and stay there?

Take a look at the diagram in this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107454
Note that Apple has specific terminology for base stations in a WDS setup:
    - a main base station. This is usually the one connected to the incoming broadband internet service
    - a remote base station. This wirelessly extends the range of either a main base station, or a relay base station.
    - a relay base station. This connects wirelessly to a main base station, and can itself have remote base stations associated with it.
Your friend has two Airport Extremes. I suspect one is being used as the main base station. Therefore the second is being set up as a remote base station (NOT a relay) using Apple's terminology.
    What I suggest:
    1. unplug the second Base Station from power
    2. use the Airport Admin Utlity to view the configuration of the main base station. Under the Airport tab, make sure the box next to "create a closed network" is NOT checked. Under the Access Control tab, remove ALL entries. Under the WDS tab, remove ALL entries and uncheck all boxes. Update settings to the base station.
    3. do a hard reset of the second base station per:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451
    4. make sure both base stations and the Airport card equipped Mac being used to perform the configuration are all (for now) located in the same room.
    5. run the Airport Setup Assistant. Follow its guidance to configure the second base station as a new base station that "extends" the existing wireless network created by the main base station.
    That's it!
In the most common setup, the remote base station will have the same wireless network name and will transmit on the same channel as the main base station. Under the Airport menu you will only ever see ONE wireless network. You can use a wireless network "sniffer" application - it will tell you that there are in fact two different access points and tell you which you are connected to. A WDS network is seamless - as you walk between base stations, the mobile computer will automatically associate with the base station from which it can get a reliable signal connection.

  • Feature P0002, can not see Gender info on the IT0002 screen 2000.

    Hi,
I m new to SAP HR. I need to fill gender information into info type 0002 and found that in the info type 0002, the Gender information is missing from the screen 2000.
Then I checked in the info type screen control (Change Screen Modifications), and have found that there are alternative screen mentained wih Variable key. Few variable keys mentioned are '01', '02', '06', '06KL' and so on. I do not understand the meaning of this. what are the '01', '02', '06', '06KL' are refering to? Whether the screen depends upon particular personnel number or user? I want to know what values (BUKRS, BTRTL,PERSG / or User group/ or MOLGA? ) should be set to '01', '02', '06', '06KL' so that I can view the alternative screen mentioned for these variable keys?
If any one has any idea please help me out.
    Thanks,
    Rupali

    Hi Rupali,
    It works like this..
    1. Basically your USer Parameters are set to Certain UGR and MOLGA...(TCODE: SU3 / Parameters Tab)
For Example, lets say the UGR is 10 and MOL is 10.
    2. Go to TCODE PE03 - Feature P0002 and check the radio button attributes, click display, hit the Struct. button
This will show the Structure name that is being used.. PME04... and the valid fields for decisions...
When you are creating/editing PE03 - Feature P0002.... you can basically base your decisions on any of these fields....
i.e. BUKRS, BTRTL, PERSG, PERSK, MOLGA, TCLAS, USERG... The return value is a Variable Key....(max of 2 chars)..say 11
For you to identify, just take one PERNR for which you are unable to see the Gender field... now click F1 on that field, see the technical parameters and identify which screen is called........say MP000200 / 2010
    3. Go to SM30, Table T588M and check for the combination arrived above....i.e. MP000200 / 2010 / 11; double click on it and see if the field is in hidden mode.....
IN YOUR CASE, FIRST CHANGE THE PARAMETER SETTINGS to the MOL, UGR you want to and then test all the above....
    Good Luck !!

  • Can not see my Airport in the list of Wifi networks and is blinking organge all the time

Can not see my airport on the list of WiFi networks and is blinking orange all the time. Tried to reset several times.

Do you have a Mac or idevice for setting up the Express? It does require a later utility than is available for windows.
You might be able to setup with the v5 utility in windows but there is no guarantee.
You should use a simple name both for the base and the wireless. eg AEXgen2 base name and AEXwifi for wireless name.. that is if you get access.

  • I can not see my external hard drive that is hooked to my airport extreme

I have hooked my iOmega 1tb hard drive to my airport extreme but can not see it on my macbook pro. need help to set this up

This is unsupported by Apple. You must configure Airport Utility to turn enable File Sharing of the drive in Sharing preferences and in the AEBS configuration. Then you have to "mount" the drive on your Desktop by selecting Connect To Server from the Finder's Go menu.

  • I can no longer access my Airport Express Base Station. When I plug it in, it keeps flashing orange. I cannot see it in the Airport Utility.

I can no longer access my Airport Express Base Station. When I plug it in, it keeps flashing orange. I cannot see it in the Airport Utility.
    How do I fix this

If you're comfortable resetting all settings, unplug it, hold down the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug it back in - keep holding it for another 10-20s until the amber light flashes
Then, open airport utility, now you should be able to see the device either on-screen or in the upper left under 'other wi-fi devices'

  • My AirPort Extreme can not see my SMC router

I have a new MacBook Pro. It can see other routers (in my neighborhood) and connect to the internet by ethernet cable into my SMC router but it can not see the SMC router wirlessly. I have no security on my router right now. Any ideas?

I have the exact same problem: SMC Barricade G 2408WBRP-G-CA with v2.08 firmware. Because there's lots of talk of problems with WEP, turned that off, but no luck, the built-in airport card of the powerbook won't connect to the router.
I have successfully connected to a Cisco access point at work with 128-bit WEP with no problem at all, so I'm certain the hardware in the machine is functioning... just not with this access point.

  • 2 Mac can not see each other via airdrop under the same airport/timecapsule.

I have 2 iMac in my home with a TImeCapsule (gen4).
The wifi is on both 2.4G and 5G with the same SSID.
iMac A is working on 2.4GHz, iMac B is working on 5GHz.
So they can not see each other via airdrop, meanwhile they can see each other  in the left panel of Finder.app
Is it a known issue of AirDrop?

    Hi Kirby Zhou,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like you would like to utilize file sharing between computers, not necessarily AirDrop. Please refer to the attached article for information on the file sharing process. If this is not what you are looking for, please let me know.

  • I just bought a new pc and My laptop can connect to it but my airport utility won't recognize it. Even though it does connect to the internet about every 15 minutes the internet shuts off.

I just bought a new pc and for our internet connection we have an airport express. My laptop can connect to it but my airport utility won't recognize it. Even though it does connect to the internet about every 15 minutes the internet shuts off. What should I do?

If you've not yet tried, unpower the AppleTV for a minute or so and restart - this occasionally corrects issues.
If not and the software update seems to have caused an issue, go to the Settings menu and choose to Restore it (this will erase all settings) to reapply current firmware.
Alternatively try to do so via iTunes:

  • Can't see HD on new Airport Extreme with TimeMachine software

Just bought a new Airport Extreme for which set up was easy -- I plugged it into my router via ethernet, ran the configuration and was good to go.
The AirPort Extreme is plugged in and appears to be set up correctly as the green light is glowing on the front and I can see it in the Airport Utility as well as surf the 'net and send and receive emails, etc.
I plugged a new 1TB FW800/USB drive into the Airport Extreme (via USB) after formating it on my MBP and verifying the two 500 GB partitions I created; one partition for the MBP and the other new Mini I just installed in my studio.
I can sign in succesfully into the Airport, but when I select the Tab for Disks, neither partitions nor the disk itself are showing up -- without which I can not designate the partitions to each Mac.
    I have rebooted the AirPort and re-verified the 1TB FW800/USB drive ...
The goal is to use the Time Machine software for backing up each Mac to its respective partition wirelessly.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you ....

TM over network to FW shared drive is an interesting work around.
There are some tricks to this kind of setup.
    See http://code.stephenmorley.org/articles/time-machine-on-a-network-drive/
Make sure BTW the drive is partitioned GUID .. if it was a windows drive at some point it may still have MBR.. and that will not work... in some cases.
It is better to connect AFP than SMB.. but I presume you are doing that although you don't state it.
I would try using ethernet to do the setup as well.. not just wireless.
Wireless should be in the same vlan as the ethernet.. but I have run into troubles recently where things weren't what they appeared.

  • Extreme (n) not recognizing old Express in Airport Utility

I recently bought a new Airport Extreme (version 7.3.2).
I replaced it on the modem and set it up to configure the internet etc and it is working fine ( its set to i) Create a Wireless Network,ii) Allow this network to be extended as well as iii) the Radio Mode being set to 802.11n ( 802.11b/g compatible).
The problem is that the old Express can not be seen in the Utility when the Exrtreme is highlighted in the Utility. I repeatedly 'rescan' but the old express just is not visible.
However, if I turn off the new Extreme, the Airport Utility can then 'see' the old express's and then would allow me to set them up - (however I can't, as when I ask them to be a remote or to extend an existing network, they tell me that there is not WDS in operation - which is true seeing that the main Extreme is turned off.)
It's almost like the Extreme 'over-rides' the Express and vice versa in the Airport Utility - I can't see them all 'together'.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    Paul

I believe that you have TWO wireless networks set up. One from the Extreme and the other on the Express. You cannot be connected to both, hence you cannot see them simultaneously under AirPort Utility. I would suggest you turn on the Extreme and write down all the settings under the Wireless heading. Via AirPort (not AirPort Utility) see if there is another wireless network that corresponds to the Express. If so, connect and you should be able to access the Express settings under AirPort Utility. Use that to Join an existing network (your Extreme, which should be still ON). Once that is accomplished and you restart, you will lose your Express wireless network, but be able to switch back your AirPort settings to your Extreme network.
    Good luck!
