Can not Upgrade Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion due to Bootcamp

This is a long standing problem I had since I bought my Macbook Pro (a purchase now I deeply regret) almost two years ago.
I keep asking around every few months, to see if anyone came up with a good solution. I hope someone can help me this time
When I decided to buy my Macbook pro 10.6.8 with Snow Leopard, Apple said that the macbook would run smootly both in OSX and Windows due to bootcamp dual boot. I was quite happy about that, since my job requires me to use some Windows-only software and I was curious about apple products.
Unfortunately, they fail to mention (or maybe they did not foresee) that upgrading anything on both OSX or Windows would have been a true nightmare. Right off the bat I spent countless hours trying to upgrade my graphic card drivers in Windows. More problems arrived every time a new software/upgrade/driver/OS update was coming up. The final blow was the release of OSX Lion.
With a Bootcamp partition it is not possible to upgrade the OS from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion. The reason is because a recovery system can't be created. The only solution I found so far would be:
1) Buy two separate external HD
2) Backup individually OSX and Windows data
3) Re-install OS leopard
4) Upgrade to Mountain Lion
5) Creat a bootcamp partition
6) re-install Windows
7) re-install one by one any software on both OS (Matlab, Ansys, Office .... etc ... etc ... etc... [6-8 hours])
8) Restore all data
9) Wait for next OS release, DO IT AGAIN
Forgive me , but this is absurd. I simply refuse of waste so much time and money
Did anyone have the same problem and found a more cleaver way to solve it?
Thanks!!!!

This was solved some time ago. See the following:
I saw a reference to an Apple bulletin on how to solve the problem if Lion rejects your install AND you have a BootCamp partition.
It seems the issue is that the space at the "bottom" of your available space when Lion installs it's partition is already occupied by BootCamp. The fix was to go into Disk Utility; Select your Hard Drive; Select Partition; Move the bottom of your main partition "up" a bit to create a space for Lion; close Disk Utility; Install Lion; once Lion is successfully installed, go back into Disk Partition and drag the bottom of your main partition back "down" to the bottom of the window.
You need to create a space about 2 GB in size.

  • How do I ensure bootcamp partition works after upgrading snow leopard to mountain lion

I am very apprehensive about upgrading to Mountain Lion due to performance concerns and the debacle with the new Auto Save feature which seems like a very poor and confusing solution to a problem that didn't really exist. I am only considering the upgrade, so that I can get the latest version of Xcode - 4.3; for some reason, 4.2 for SL is no longer available and my current 4.0 version is no longer supported, so I feel forced to upgrade to ML. Also, I have a bootcamp partition that I need to be able to use without issues after having upgraded to ML. So the essence of my question is this: what steps do I need to take prior to upgrading to ML to ensure that my Bootcamp partition is left intact and bootable. I have already created a compressed backup disk image and stored on a separate external hard disk for precautionary reasons. Is there anything else I should know beore going ahead with the upgrade?
    Thanks.

Auto Save is actually a very useful feature. If you are typing a paper in Pages and you haven't saved in a long time, and then your battery dies suddenly, your paper is saved. Before Auto Save, you would have lost all your progress.
Your BootCamp partition will not even be touched during the install of Mountain Lion. As long as you make sure to select your Mac OS partition during setup, nothing will happen to your Windows side and everything will still work fine.

  • Upgrading Macbook Air hard drive and upgrading Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion at same time

I have a 2011 Macbook Air 3,2 running Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  My 128GB SSD hard drive is completely full, and I have ordered an upgrade from OWC which also comes with an optional external enclosure.  I would like to do a clean install (to "upgrade") to Mountain Lion on the new drive.  Can anyone confirm if the following sequence will work?
    1.  Purchase Mountain Lion on App Store and download to an SD card
    2.  Connect my new OWC SSD as an external drive
    3.  Do a clean install of Mountain Lion from the SD card to my new external SSD
    4.  Boot from the external SSD
    5.  Use Migration Assistant to move everything from my in-system old SSD to the new (currently external) SSD
    6.  Shut down
    7.  Physically swap the SSD drives
    8.  Boot from the newly-installed larger internal SSD
    9.  Done?
Is it that simple or am I missing some major step?  In particular, are there any complications with step 3 above?
    Thanks for your help!

    Carl,
The SD card can be used as a boot drive, if you manage to restore the image to the drive.. I tried to use an SD card in the built-in card reader, and for whatever reason could not get Disk Utility to restore the InstallESD.dmg image to the SD card directly when done throught the Air's reader. I had to use an SD card that had a built-in USB tab, and use USB. I did not try using an external SD adapter to the USB port to see if that would work.
Remember, you don't open the package by double clicking the installer, you Right-click (or Control+click) the installer, and choose Show Package Contents from the resulting contextual menu. In the folder that appears, open Contents, then open Shared Support; you’ll see a disk-image file called InstallESD.dmg.
Launch Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities). Drag the InstallESD.dmg disk image into Disk Utility’s left-hand sidebar to the flash drive you want to restore the image to.
I would copy the downloaded installer to a safe location, so if you ever need it again.

I have a late 2009 iMac with a 1tb hard drive running Snow Leopard.  Can I partion the hard drive and upgrade to Mountain Lion on one part and keep Snow Leopard on the other?  If not, can I partition my external back-up drive that I use for Time Machine to do the same thing?

  • App Store upgrade Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion: unable to accept Terms & Conditions

I was trying to upgrade a Mac from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 (latest) to Mountain Lion via the App Store. When I click "Buy" it pops down an alert reading:
The iTunes Terms & Conditions have changed. To Proceed, you must read and accept the new terms and conditions.
So far, so good.. I click "OK" and it brings up the Terms & Conditions document. I check the box "I have read and agree…" and click the Agree button. This sends me right back to the ML purchase page, with the same alert described above popped down again.
I have only gone through this loop for 3 or 4 cycles, but I assume it is infinite.
Anyone experienced or heard about this issue, or how to address it?

  • Time machine can not access time capsule after upgrade from snow leopard to mountain lion

Two days ago I upgraded my 2009 17" MBP from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. That evening my time capsule/time machine combination worked fine and did an incremental backup of about 12 gigabyte. Yesterday - only one day later - the time machine backup did not work anymore.
It appears that the system can not find the time capsule - even though it shows the remaining free space on the time capsule (so it did find it after all).
The message is always the same:
Time Machine can not complete the backup "Time Capsule"
The image of the backup volume "/Volumes/Data/Pauls MacBookPro.sparsebundle" is not accessable (Error -1).
I also can not delete the backup image on the time capsule since it is read-only. And I do not want to format the time caspsule yet since my wife's MBAir is also using the same time casule.
I tried out all kinds of suggestions (hard and soft resetting both the MBP and the TC, entering the password again, setting the TC up again) all to no avail. No backup is possible anymore.

Sounds like you got this message earlier:
If so, see #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Offhand, I don't recall anyone not being able to delete one via the Finder (but most were only backing-up one Mac, so just erased the disk).
You may have to wait for that message to appear again (24 hours later), or you might try holding Alt/Option with the TM icon in the menubar, and select Verify Backups if it will let you.

    Best Regards,

You need to upgrade your copy of MS Office. You're using a version that is 8 years old (at least). You can buy Office 2011, which will work. You could also get a copy of Pages from the App Store, which is cheaper and will open Word files (though not perfectly). Or you could get a free Office clone, like OpenOffice or LibreOffice.

  • I currently have Leopard, and there are no longer updates for it. So I must upgrade to either Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion. Without doing so I cannot update my itunes, and my ipod is no longer compatile with my mac. How can I buy the upgrade

I currently have Leopard, and there are no longer updates for it. So I must upgrade to either Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion. Without doing so I cannot update my itunes, and my ipod is no longer compatile with my mac. How can I buy the upgrade, since I do not have access to the mac store as that comes with Snow Leopard? I went to Best Buy and they said neither Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion can be bought there.

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade all the way to Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759

  • Before upgrading my system from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion I had taken a backup of iPhoto in my external drive. But now when I try to open that package, I'm directed to app store to buy new iPhoto. How can I retrieve my photos without buying iPhoto?

Before upgrading my system from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion I had taken a backup of iPhoto library in my external drive. But now when I try to open that package, I'm directed to app store to buy new iPhoto. Why would apple install iPhoto by default with Snow Leapord and make us import all our photos in it at the first place, and now ask for money if we want to retrieve our photos back on mountain lion? What if they make contacts a paid app with the next OS upgrade, and then bully us to pay money if we want our contacts? This is something very dissappointing on Apple's part. I need answers here.

I fail to remember if the installer gave me an option to keep my applications.
The Mountain Lion installer will not delete applications. It will only mark applications, that are not compatible with your current system with a "forbidden" sign in the icon. And you cannot launch them.
Does your iPhoto icon in the Applications folder look like this?
Then your iPhoto version is incompatible and cannot run with Mt. Lion. If it is iPhoto '11, with a versionnumber starting with 9.x.x., you can upgrade it by downloading a newer version from the Apple downloads site  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1650.
But if you have 8.x.x, you need to buy an upgrade.
    Regards
    Léonie

    hi tuggerose
i think it is bad new for you. if it's any consilation i went through the same thing when i loaded mountain lion when it first came out. i think the problem is that mountain lion is a pure 64bit operating system and the software you have is 32bit. earlier os's were able to emulate 32bit but the new system does not. the answer is new software. i did it and it cost me a load of money and much angst so your not alone.

  • Upgrading from snow leopard to mountain lion will i have trouble using my Pages and Iphoto since it's not the latest version

I am contemplating upgrading my OS from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.  Currently, I don't have ICloud available on my computer.  I also keep getting messages to upgrade my IPhoto to '11 version as well as Pages.  I know, I'm behind, but my theory is if it isn't broke don't mess with it.
My concern is I don't want to lose my pictures and YES, I have backed up with Time Machine to an external hard drive.  (I just hope that's good enough).  IF I upgrade to start using ML OS, will I need to restore anything from my external hard drive or will I be able to start using computer as if nothing changed?
I know enough to be dangerous and I'm hesitant to upgrade for fear of losing everything.  Would appreciate help.  Thanks!

  • How much is it to upgrade form Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and can it be done in one hit?

How much is it to upgrade form Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and can it be done in one hit?

Run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
You should now see the App Store icon, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

    Hi galleryskins,
The article below may be able to help you with this issue.
Click on the link below to see more details and screenshots.
I've quoted some helpful highlights for you:
OS X Mountain Lion: Zoom content on the screen
Zoom with a mouse or trackpad
To zoom in and out, hold down the modifier key you specified while you perform the scroll gesture.
For example, if you have a trackpad and used the default settings, zoom in by holding down the Control (^) key while you drag two fingers up on the trackpad. Zoom out by holding down the Control key while you drag two fingers down on the trackpad.
If you chose Picture-in-picture zooming, a window appears near the mouse cursor with the magnified image. If you chose Fullscreen zooming, the entire screen displays the magnified image.
I hope this information helps ....
    Have a great day!
