Can OCR'd text be edited?

I'm using Acrobat 9 Pro, and working with a document, a TIFF file, that was converted to PDF and OCR'd in Acrobat. Now I need to edit some of the text using the TouchUp Text tool, but am not able to edit it. In previous versions I was able to edit OCR'd text. Is it still possible in Acrobat 9?

Hi jay,
Keep in mind that there are three ways to OCR with Acrobat.
With Acrobat 8 Pro/3D:
1.  Searchable Image
2.  Searchable Image (Exact)
3.  Formatted Text & Graphics
With Acrobat 9  Pro/Pro Extended
1.  Searchable Image
2.  Searchable Image (Exact)
3.  ClearScan
Methods # 3 may be used to edit "suspects".
Methods #1 & #2 place invisible text (text rendering mode 3). There has been and continues to be no practicable means of editing this directly.
It is not intended to be "word processor like editable text" (but then neither is any PDF content).
However, there is something to play with.
If you used methods #1 or #2 and you have Acrobat Pro/Pro Extended, try the Prefight Fixup that embeds fonts.
"Embed fonts (even if text is invisible)"
Which is described:
"If a PDF uses fonts which are not embedded into the PDF file they are embedded.
This fixup embeds fonts event if they are only usef for text which is invisible (text rendering mode 3).
It is required that the respective fonts are present in the system's font folders.
Some fonts may have a flag indicating that their license does not allow embedding.
In this case the fonts are not embedded into the PDF."
I've had no occasion to use this fixup so I cannot say it will or will not serve your needs.
But, may still be worth a run on some trial files, eh?
"Rotated"
The OCR characters (the "invisible text" of text rendering mode 3) are "rotated".
Be well...

  • How can i recognize text and edit (highlight) it in a pdf without converting it to a word document?

PDF scanned as an image , want to recognize text and highlight it in the pdf format

    Hi lateefa_k,
Adobe Acrobat lets you perform OCR (optical character recognition) on scanned documents: Acrobat Help | Scan documents to PDF.
If you want to give it a try, you can download a free 30-day trial of Acrobat and give it a spin: PDF creator, edit PDF | Adobe Acrobat XI subscription.

  • Can't see text to edit in CS5

    Hi all...
I feel extremely stupid asking this question, but using the trial of CS5, when I open a CS4 project I am unable to see the text which I want to edit.
I can highlight it (select), and view it in the other compositions but when i go to edit the text layer itself there is just the grey area (workspace) with no visable text, when i guess where it is and highlight it all i get is a shaded area.
I have to go back to the main composition to see the changes.
This did not happen in CS4.
What stupid mistake am i making?
    Many thanks in advance

You edit text in the Composition Panel (comp window). Always have. You don't edit text in a Layer Panel. I'm not even sure how you would open a text layer in a Layer Panel. It would really help if I new a little more about your composition.
It sounds like the Text layer may be in a pre-comp and that the text may be the same color as the pre-comp background.   A screenshot of the project or a screenshot of the project flow chart would help.

  • Text editing  - can you add text editing options on the 'in-browser editing'

Text editing  - can you add text editing options on the 'in-browser editing' tool?

You can only replace existing content, not edit the page structure. Refer to the respective help sections.

  • How can i highlight text in the Adobe Difital Editions?

How can i highlight text in the Adobe Difital Editions?

You have to remember that Digital Editions was never designed to have 'text
editor' capabilities.  BTW: Bluefire and Overdrive also have such
limitations.  Put in another frame of reference, DE presents you with the
ebook, as you would be presented with a physical printed book.

How can I copy text in Adobe Digital Editions for an eBook that I have purchased?

Adobe apps can be reset to their factory defaults by using Ctrl+Alt+Shift, not Del. The rest doesn't really make any sense since you did not provide any details and authorizations can't be changed that way, anyway. If you want to transfer books to other devices you need to contact the vendors to release the DRM/ provide a new download and if you want to change the registered ID, you need to contact support or create a completely new account, which in turn will require you to buy your DRM managed books again/ get a new download as well.

My Macbook pro won't open downloaded programs, it just opens the code it was written in using the text and edit app. How can I fix this? I just bought the computer last month so this is some what frustrating.

If you are downloading .exe files, those are Windows programs, and will not run on your Mac unless you install Windows on it.  (That is possible, if you need one of those apps.)

  • Can not copy text from AI CC or AI6 in to the file name

I have an AI file with 80+ UPC codes that I need to separate in to individual files. Each UPC has a descriptor but when I copy the text and then try to paste it as file name it will not paste. I use this same process regularly in InDesign when I design print ads. Each print ad has a unique item number that prints with the copyright line so I simply copy and paste that information when I do the save.
Under File Handling and Clipboard both PDF and AICB are on. I've tried this in AICC and AICS6. I also tried different files. Same issue. Any suggestions? I really don't want to have to type 80 some descriptions which are very lengthy.

I can not copy the text from Illustrator in to any OS X application/function (filename, Mail, Text Edit, ect). I can copy in to InDesign, Photoshop, Flash, and other other Adobe product. I can copy in to Word as well. I guess my work around will be Word.
And the opposite is true. I can copy text from any other Adobe application to any OS X application/function with no issues.
I guess my work around will be to OCR the text from Acrobat and open in Word. The descriptors have to be 100% accurate and some of them are pretty long.

    Hi,
The software provided for your device does not include OCR functionality
You may use any 3rd part OCR solution to scan as editable text.
If you have Microsoft Office suite there is a good chance the office suite provide this kind of capabilities:
    Office 2007 or 2010:

  • Outline Text as editable Text

Is there any possiblity to convert "Outline Text as editable Text" in illustrator?

    Short of retyping, no.
If there is a lot of text, you might consider an OCR program.
If you have Acrobat, you can try its rudimentary OCR capabilities. Rasterize your text (using a sufficiently high document raster effects resolution setting), save a copy with PDF compatibility, then open it in Acrobat. Go to Document | Recognize Text Using OCR | Start. Don't expect an exact typeface match.
Copy the text in Acrobat and paste in Illustrator.

  • How can I wrap text in a pie in pages?

How can I wrap text in a pie in pages?

If you need to insert text into a shape like a pie wedge, the easiest way might be to simply use the shape - freeform tool (at the bottom of the shape menu) and create a shape and type your text in it then place the shape over your pie wedge. The text within the shape should wrap - additional controls for text can be used with the Text Inspector.
You can edit the actual shape with Format Object > Make Shape Editable option but unfortunately, you have an option to make straight or smooth curves, but not both, so you'll need to shape the object using smooth curves and use the the bezier controls that appear as you select a control point.
