Can old java versions be loaded on a mac?

Can I load an old version of java on a macbook pro? The version I need to use is 1.6.0_23
thank you

Apple blocks old Java versions because of serious security issues, so you won't be able to install that Java version on your Mac. You can only install the latest Java 6 version or, if you have OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion, Java 7

  • Is mountain lion compatible with old (2004) version of microsoft office for MAc?

I have heard that Mountain Lion is not compatible with old (2004) version of microsoft office for MAc. Is that true?

Can't say I've ever seen such error messages, and I've opened lots of files created back in OS 8. Also many more much older than that from Windows 95 and even MS-DOS.
Lucky for you; unlucky for me that an important Excel 2004 Chart gets corrupted when opened in Excel 2011!
I suspect the problem is in the conversion routine that Microsoft added to Office 2011 to update Excel 2004 files.  How conversant are you historically with converting Excel 2004 files that contain charts to Excel 2011?  Because your experience with OS 8, Windows 95 and even MS-DOS has no relevance on this issue.

You will notice, Kurt, that I based my advice to the OP as "if you are unable or unwilling to upgrade to Microsoft Office 2011..."
Yes, I saw it. But if everyone did what you would expect with your statement, no one would suggest upgrading to Office 2011. Besides, you're the one who stated "unable or unwilling", not the OP.
Are you always this argumentative, or is this my lucky day?
Many people suggest upgrading to Office 2011. I do it frequently in my other "workarounds" type of answers to the Rosetta in Lion/Mountain problem.  I chose not to offer that solution here, and as I expected, someone else, namely you, did!
The problem was that you finished your suggestion with this comment: "Particularly when it isn't really necessary."  Since this statement was not true in my case (it IS necessary for me to continue to use my important Excel 2004 file as well as some other historical files I have; and conceivably could be important to the OP), I posted the correction.
You also made the suggestion that: "...the cost of VM software isn't that much less than just upgrading to Office 2011." While certainly true in the vacuum of the OP asking specifically about Word 2004; when the OP becomes aware that his complete library of PPC applications will fail in Mountain Lion, your suggestion about the relative cost to upgrade may no longer be as relevant.
Lastly: Yes, I commonly state to similar OP's that if they are "unable" (because, for example, they may also have conversion problems with Office 2011, Appleworks 6, Freehand or other programs) or "unwilling" (perhaps they just cannot afford to upgrade all of their PPC apps at this time), that here is an alternative that will keep the status quo available to them, and buy them some more time to consider their options while continuing to use Lion/Mountain Lion and their PowerPC apps.
Is the relevance of my post to the OP's problem (and your reply to my solution) sufficiently clear for you now?

  • How do I get the old java version (the one that worked) back

I just did the lastest OSX upgrade.  OSX 10.7.   It did a few things to Java.
    1) It removed the Utility to select a Java version to run (umm, so how am I supposed to pick Java 1.5 for some old Java 1.5 apps?)
    2) It made some Java 1.6 applications that I need on my desktop to do my job not work.   Anyone heard of ScrumWorksPro.?  Barfing on a laf.jar that's missing from the new 1.6 version
I can't seem to 'downgrade' back to the version that worked.   Does anyone have the zip file of the old version of Java that worked?  If so, where do I unzip it to.   I'm fine with launching my app from a terminal, I just need the jvm files so I can.  Looks like the installer (or my attempts to get rid of the new version by doing rm -r on every Java dir I could find) has gotten rid of the old version of Java.   I just can't seem to find the installer or the zip files to get the old version.
    Help!

In Firefox 4 by default the Stop, Go and Reload (refresh) buttons are combined and attached to the right hand edge of the location bar.
When you are typing in the location bar it will show the Go button. When a site is loading it shows the Stop button. At other times it shows the Reload button.
If you want separate buttons, Control-click on a toolbar and choose Customize, you can then drag and drop the stop or reload buttons and place them elsewhere. If you place them in the order "Reload-Stop" on the right hand edge of the location bar they will be combined again. For more details on customizing the toolbar see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/How+to+customize+the+toolbar

  • Firefox and old java version

I installed Firefox on 3 computers; each have java 6 update 30. On the first PC I got a prompt when I visited a site that requires java asking me if I want to run once or allow this site to use java every time I visit it. On the other 2 computers java just started working. What do I need to do to get the functionality of my first install. I only want java to run on one site and have it disabled everywhere else.

Maybe the blocklist.xml file isn't up-to-date on the other two computers? Firefox should retrieve it regularly into the profile folder. You can check the timestamp here:

  • CS4 - Flash - old java version

I have noticed after installation of CS4 that java is installed to the following directory c:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash CS4\JVM\bin\java.exe and is version 1.5.0_09-b01 which is susceptible to a multitude of vulnerabilities (http://secunia.com/advisories/product/4228/?task=advisories ).  Has anyone been able to remove, upgrade or point the application to use another version of java on the system with any success?  Is there an update I'm not aware that upgrades this version?  Thank you!

I have this same issue and would like to know what is the best action to complete this task. We have an applucation that requires 1.5.0.15 only and will not work on the 1.6 platform.

  • Uninstalling old java environments

I cannot work out what are new and old versions of Java.
Therefore I cannot work out what I can safely remove. The help with "removing old java versions" http://java.com/en/download/faq/5000070500.xml does not mention the items on my PC, for example -:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Java(TM) Update 3
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
I would like to know what these are but I would like to know where to find the information on the Sun site that explains how to recognise the above, and how I work out which can be removed.

Unless a library/application you're using requires an older version of Java or is not compatible with the current version of Java, there is no reason to keep old Java installs around.
As with all programs, lower version numbers are older.
Incidentally, the current version of Java is Java 6, Update 5

  • Unable to install Java Version 7

I currently have Java Version 6 loaded. I downloaded the latest version of Java Version 7. It was a pkg installer. When I ran it it said I couldn't install it because I didn't download it from the Apple Store. Also there is no Java panel in the System Preferences like in Moultanl Lion. It looks like any Package Installer wont run unless it came from the Apple Store

Glad to help. But seriously, since Java is a known and popular vector for cyberattack, I'd suggest leaving it disabled in your browser(s) unless it's necessary for a valid reason. Also, having allowed apps from anywhere, I'd suggest switching back to the earlier, more secure setting until another such need arises to avoid a questionable app slipping in under the wire.

  • Can more than one version of the Java Plugin be loaded on a PC together?

I have an annoyance. We are an automotive component supplier. For Chrysler, we are required, several times a day, go onto their website and access a system called S.M.A.R.T. that runs in a Java applet. The requirements for that applet is that we have Sun Java Runtime version 1.3.1_01 or lower loaded to the accessing PC. For Toyota, we need to access their website to print shipping labels. That runs with a Java applet that requires Sun Java Runtime 1.4. Can both of those versions be loaded to one PC together and then enabled and disabled as the different websites are accessed? Larry Tanis, Manager Of Information Systems, Trident Lighting, LLC

The quick answer is yes, but it depends a lot on how the jsp tag etc. is configured at each of the web sites you are visiting.
If you take a look at the source and find the applet load tag, you can figure out whether they are specifying a dynamic or static versioning. Depending on how they write their tag, it may or may not force loading of a given browser plugin... to me this looks like you are getting a ping pong effect.
The following URL is long winded but it describes how this works. In your case this will be purely informational as you won't be able to change how it loads.
