Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

ive tried free programs that end having to be paid for which i cant do and i cant seem to figure out how to get unpurchased music and movies off my ipod onto a new computer.keep in mind i dont have my old hard drive with my music on it hooked up.can anybody help pleaseeeee?

For all non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.

Transferring iTunes from iPod to new computer

I have damaged my Apple PowerBook (containing my 'master' iTunes library) beyond repair and am unable to access any data on the drive.
Having purchased a new MacBook I am attempting to move the library of music and images from my 5th Generation 30gb iPod onto the new computer.
I have followed the instructions given here:

Which suggests removing the iTunes folder from the new computer and replacing it with the iTunes folder from the iPod.
But when I open up the iPod icon on my desktop there are only four folders: Calendars/Contacts/Notes/Photos.
There is no iTunes folder?

Since you have a Mac you can use a program called Senuti. It transfers all your material from your iPod to your computer. Download Senuti, then in the preferences, set your destination folder to the iTunes music folder. All the content on your iPod will be placed in there and then all you have to do is transfer that to your new iTunes library. Hope it works out.

I've tried Home Sharing but it doesn't allow me to transfer my old library to my new computer, it just allows me to listen to the songs from it. Possibly. Media Go supports a variety of music formats, some of which can be imported in to iTunes and then synced on to an iPhone, however some of its formats cannot be imported in to iTunes.
See http://mediago.sony.com/enu/supported-file-formats/ for a list of formats supported by Media Go. iTunes for Windows supports MP3, AAC, WAV, and can import and convert WMA files as well. However iTunes does not support ATRAC, or FLAC.
Furthermore, if some of your music has been bought from an Internet music store it might be procted by DRM. If so it cannot be imported in to iTunes.

I lost the hard drive in old computer. Having trouble transfering files directly from ipod to new computer. Ipod is configured for windows. Old computer was windows XP, new computer is Windows Vista. Can you share music between iTunes accounts on the same computer? My kids iPods are under my account now with all of our shared music but they want their own iTunes accounts. I would like to transfer the music and apps that they purchased under my account to their new accounts... Is this posible?

Well you must have updated iTunes once or twice in that time. Do you have some sort of "tidying" app that is supposed to clean "unnecessary" files. If so perhaps it is too aggressive.

My old computer crashed and I had to get a new one recently. I have downloaded the latest ITUNES Software (7 I believe). How can I get the music on my IPOD to transfer into my ITUNES Library on my new computer? I am worried that the new ITUNES is going to erase all the songs on my IPOD. Thanks so much for the help.

No. Fortunately I was able to transfer songs, however, none of the playlists were copied. The whole process of transferring songs from the iPod to a new computer is ridiculously scary; I've had to re-install songs from backups in the past - and it takes days. It's too cumbersome for an ordinary non-techie. The protected/purchased songs transferred easily from the iPod to the new computer. However, the 1,000s of other songs had to be copied as suggested using the iPod first as a removable drive to copy the library folders to the new computer, and then adding those files/songs through iTunes. That created "duplicates" of the purchased songs; I deleted the duplicates based on the Added Date in iTunes. The copied library folders were deleted after I verified the #songs in the new iTunes libary. I had to redo my playlists (viewing the old computer) and re-add a few podcasts. Adding the iTunes library was the most difficult task in setting up this new computer.
