Can one use an iMac as a small business server?

Small business.
Less than 10 users.
Needs:
File server.
FTP server.
Web server for small blog.
Running OS Server and all that is has to offer.
Open office, so noise from server is an issue.
Is the iMac an option as a dedicated server?

Thanks for all the help in pointing me in the right direction. I decided to go with an iMac over the mini, although like the advice above, the mini would have been a perfect machine for the job. I just wanted a machine I could repurpose later as a client.

  • Can I use my Office 365 for small business version of Sharepoint to develop a type of Business Database Management System?

We have an excel sheet that job enquiries are logged into, estimates and a quote are produced, upon receipt of an order a job is started and once completed gets invoiced. Standard business workflow stuff, can I get 365 to automate this?
I would like to be able to upon a new enquiry being entered and an order received, a set of job folders are automatically created using a unique number from the excel sheet as its job number. These folders would have certain document templates within
them for use on the related job.
I have been experimenting with Zoho Creator to develop a system to do this, but as we have adopted 365 (small business version) it would be preferable to be able to do this all in one place.
Any help or advice greatly appreciated.
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
As I understand, you would like to create a management system to create folders via number in Excel sheet.
In my view, we could import the Excel sheet to a list, then use workflow to get number and create folders.
Here is a forum specific for Office 365 SharePoint for your reference, please confirm the plan with support engineer there just in case:

  • Used the WRT120N on MS Small Business Server, having problems.

We purchsed the WRT120N to allow access to our network in our conference room wirelessly.  I had my brother assist me with it's setup.  We changed the IP Address so it couldn't get hacked into easily, we hid the SSID so it wasn't broadcast locally, and other things we did to setup security.  I set it up using a laptop that wasn't plugged into the network, once we got it all setup, we plugged in the network cable from my connection in my office.  It worked.  I could access Internet.  When I went to hook it into our switch in the server room, it no longer worked, and while I could get a wireless signal that it was there, I was not able to connect.  The lights also on the switch stayed orange and never turned green.
I need help getting this setup.  I now have an IP Address that the company who manages our server gave me.  They are wanting us to purchase an access point, but I'm not so sure that is the route I want to go.  I think I still want the router.
    Any suggestions?

    Who is your ISP...?
What is the ip address of the modem..?
What is the ip address of the router..?
Where is the switch and server connected...?
What is the ip address of the server...?
How you are able to see the Wireless network if you have disabled the SSID broadcast on the router..?Re-check the settings on the router.

  • Can I use my iMac Install Disc on Macbook Pro?

Hi, all.  I was given a friend's old Macbook Pro and I'd like to put Boot Camp on it, but the Boot Camp instructions say I need an OSX Leopard install disc to do it.  Naturally, I just recently purged my own software binder and threw away all of my OSX discs except the one that came with iMac I recently purchased.  "Why would I need them any more?" said I.  Doh.
I have no idea what cat Apple is up to now, but the Macbook is running 10.5.8 and the install disc from my iMac is 10.6.7.  My questions:
    1) Can I use my iMac install disc on my Macbook Pro, which is about 3-4 years old?
    2) Does OS 10.6.7 qualify as Leopard?  If not, will it work for what I'm trying to do?
    3) Do I need to update the Macbook OS to 10.6.7 to be able to use that disc for the Boot Camp install?
Any information or advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

The only thing I'd add to this is that at one point in time you could go to an Apple store and purchase Lion on a USB stick.
If your MBP was compatible and you could find one of those you could boot to it, install from it then setup bootcamp.
Also if you are thinking bootcamp, also consider VMWare Fusion or Parallels which allow you to run Windows while still in OS X.

  • When trying to burn a playlist to a blank CD, iTunes 10.3.1 won't recognize the blank CD I've inserted (Verbatim CD-R). I've burned using these CDs before, this is a recent problem. Not the burner, as I can burn using Toast. iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8

What kind of CD are you burning (Audio or MP3)?
If you're burning an MP3 CD, the songs must already
    be in mp3 format.
If not, iTunes will tell you that you have no songs
    in the playlist.
    M
I was making an audio cd. But I have since found out what the problem was. The files in my PLAYLIST I converted to aiff, since they were SDll files (I thought they were similar to AIFF, and they PLAY on Itunes...just won't burn.) When I selected the songs in the playlist and converted them...I thought all those files were converted, They were not. The converted files went into my LIBRARY, even tho I selected the ones in the playlist...and once I exchanged the SDll versions of the songs in my playlist. THEN they burned fine...but still...it's confusing..you say convert..it says it's been converted..and what they don't say is it's not been converted inside the playlist...where I had selected the songs...It just ADDED aiff versions..but only in the library...Anyway, that's what happened. But it's strange that it PLAYS SDll but won't burn them....and you'd think, logically..the ones you selected would change...but they don't. Playlists are mainly pointers to the actual files I guess...a sort of Alias..
At least it works now. But it's sad that the latest itunes does more, but also does LESS...as I used to be able to burn SDll files. Now I'll have to convert all my files to AIFF, and mp3's as I assume my ipod video won't play anything but mp3's?

Without any knowledge of the year machines you have it's impossible to answer that question. iMacs adn MBA's have been around for many years now so we have no idea of the exact specs your machine have. Remember when posting you need to be complete and paint a picture for us as we aren't there to look for ourselves. Your question should be  posted something like:
" I have a 2011 27" iMac and a 2009 MacBook Air, can I use the iMac as an external display for my MacBook Air?"
BTW what you are referring to is called Target Display Mode. Apple does support that on some 2009-2011 iMacs. You can find additional information at:

Not unless it's a 27" model with a Thunderbolt port, and certainly not if it's dead.
