Can only apple networks be extended using airport base stations?

My ISP provides a wifi network using a Tilgin product.
I have a time capsule and I was wondering how I can integrade my time capsule (for back up purposes) into this network.
Is there a way to extend this network using my time capsule? I know the options on the time capsule is "create a new network" or "extend a network" but what networksrcan be extended?
Thanks
Pieter

Correct. You can only extend an AirPort Express, Extreme or Time Capsule network with an AirPort Express, Extreme or Time Capsule. In this case, you can only connect the Time Capsule to the modem by Ethernet to get Internet connection

If you mean the hexidecimal equivalent of the alphanumeric password, then you can find this via the AirPort Utility, as follows:
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup
On the AirPort Utility's menubar select Base Station > Equivalent Network Password

  • Can't remember my password for my airport base station

I am trying to add another device to extend the wifi but I can not remember my password to my airport base station what do I do?

Reset it.. or find the old password.
Plug the computer into the airport by ethernet.. or you can do this by wireless..
Press in reset button for just 1sec.. (means less than 10sec)..
This is called a soft reset.. all passwords go back to default.. public for the base station.. nothing for wireless..
You now have full access for 5min.. open the airport utility.. click on the airport.. go to passwords.
Lo and behold.. all your secret identity available to all and sundry.
Note.. all security on the airport routers is illusionary.. as long as anyone has physical access to it.. they can find out everything.. and what is more.. there is no record once the 5min expires.
Sure is great for domestic equipment though... stops support calls dead.

  • I used Airport Base station and I was able to extend my network using airport express and connect my printers.  Now I am using Extreme and I can't extend the network (Express) or the printers nothing shows up.  I am using utility 6.3 and Mt Lion  What is

I had an Aiport Base Station and extended using Airport Express, where I also connected my printers (network). Now using Airport Extreme off Mt Lion 10.8.4 and Utility 6.3.
I can't extend the network (express) or connect my printers (USB) nor will it find my one wifi printer.
    What's up?

For now, leave the AirPort Express powered off.
Power off the entire network....all devices.....in any order that you want
    Wait a few minutes
Power up the modem first, and let it run 2-3 minutes by itself
Power up the AirPort Extreme next, and let it run a full minute
Keep powering up devices one at a time about a minute apart until everything is powered up (leave the Express off for now)
Open AirPort Utility and check to see if the AirPort Extreme is visible.
If it's not, click the AirPort Utility menu at the upper left of the screen, then click About AirPort Utility. Post back with the version number of AirPort Utility that you see there....which should be AirPort Utility 5.6.1.
    Post back on your progress.

  • Trying to set up a wireless guest network using Airport base station.  The first network setup was fine but the second one doesn't work.  Any suggestions?

I purchased the new Airport base station that allows for a wireless setup of a primary network and a guest network.  The primary network installation worked great but I cannot get the guest network to work properly.  Any suggestions on how to make it work?

The AirPort base station is designed to connect to a simple modem......not a modem/router or gateway device that is often furnished to users by Internet Service Providers.
So, the first troubleshooting question would be to find out what the make and model of the device that you call your "modem" might be.....to see if you have the right kind of product that will allow the Guest Network to operate correctly.

  • Can you reset the password for my airport base station?

I am trying to connect my Airport Extreme to my new modem and i need to open the Airport utility to see what the problem is however i do not have the password to the Airport base station.  Apparently it is not the wireless password that i set previously set up.

If you have a Mac that can connect to your wireless network and you're using an Apple AirPort Base Station, then simply use AirPort Utility. From the Base Station menu, select Show Passwords...
If you don't have a Mac, reset your wireless network password by momentarily depressing the reset button on your AirPort Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule. Press the button for one full second, no more. Then, configure a new password using AirPort Utility.
If you can't connect to your wireless network, or you are not using an Apple AirPort Base Station, you can use the procedure that follows below to retrieve it from your Mac's Keychain.
Your wireless network password is stored in your Mac's Keychain.
You must first have an Administrator account on a Mac that you use with that AirPort Base Station, one that is used to connect to your AirPort network.
On that Mac, open the Utilities folder. Find Keychain Access and launch it.
In the search field at the upper right, type Airport. All the Keychain entries for your base station will appear there, as well as other entries.
Look at the column "Kind". The entry you want to select will be labeled "AirPort network password" (not "AirPort base station password" or anything else).
If you are trying to recover the AirPort Base Station password then the entry you want to select will be labeled "AirPort base station password" not "AirPort network password".
Double-click that, and in the window that appears check the box for "Show password".
You will get the following window:
In the Password field type your Mac's Administrator password - the same one you used to log in to that Mac.
Then, click Allow, and your wireless network password will appear in the "Show password" field:
    Make note of it.
Close the window, then quit Keychain Access.

  • Using Airport Base Station as Extender

    Hello,
I am trying to set up an ABS as an extender for the wireless network in my house. If I have Mac Address filtering set on my original network will that carry over to the extension or do I have to put all of the Mac Address on the original network into the second base station? If I do, is there a way to transfer them from one Airport to another?
    Thanks.

If I have Mac Address filtering set on my original network will that carry over to the extension
    No
do I have to put all of the Mac Address on the original network into the second base station?
    Yes
If I do, is there a way to transfer them from one Airport to another?
No   But a few users have reported that they have been able to "export" the settings from their main router and "import" them into the new router to be set up....while others report that these particular settings are not imported when they try this.

  • My roommates' computers can't get a signal from my Airport base station

I just bought a used Airport Extreme (the round one) off Craig's List and set up a network in my apartment using Airport Utility on my MacBook. I've set it up with WPA, and I can connect to it. Works great....
Until my roommates try to connect from their computers. One is on a ~5 year-old iMac and the other is on a Thinkpad. Their machines can see the SSID but can't get a signal from it or connect to it. I've tried removing the password and unsecuring the network. I've tried resetting the router entirely and reconfiguring. Same story.
I know this is an Apple issue because their machines can connect just fine to our previous crappy router that was slowing down our connection (that was meant to be replaced by the shiny new (used) Airport). I've looked into the WEP / hex key issue mentioned on some forums (eg http://www.macwindows.com/airportpc.html#011408b), but I don't think that Apple/PC compatibility is the issue because one of their machines is an iMac.
    Help?

Hello amandalotti. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Per chance, do you have Access Controls enabled? (ref: AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > AirPort > Access tab) If so, disable it.
If not, I suggest performing a "factory default" reset on the base station to get it back to its original "out-of-the-box" configuration to see if this will help.

  • Sharing airport network connection to an airport base station over ethernet

    Hi there,
I've got a network connection to the internet via Airport, on my iBook G4 with OS X 10.4.9.
This iBook is connected to the LAN port on an Airport Express base station (for physical wiring reasons, it cannot be connected to the WAN port).
This Airport Express has a dozen other computers attached to it.
Does anyone know how I might be able to share my internet connection, via the LAN side of the Airport Express, to all these other computers?
Incidentally, when I turn on both the Ethernet LAN connection and the Airport internet connection, I stop being able to communicate over the internet connection. When I disable the LAN, the internet connection returns.
    Thanks,
    Brian

    It turns out that in
    System Preferences->Network->Show: Network Port Configurations
You can change the order of the networking by dragging the Port Configurations.
Network sharing wasn't working for me because Ethernet was above Airport, therefore Airport wasn't being used as the internet connection. Having dragged Airport above Ethernet, it is now being used for the internet, and the sharing across the Ethernet works quite soundly.

  • Xbox 360 using airport base station

    Hi
I have an imac connected directly to an ethernet modem which connects to the internet. I would like to connect my Xbox 360 to the internet using an airport extreme base station - i.e. wire from x360 to base station, wireless connection from base to imac and wire from imac to modem.
    Is this possible?
I have tried selecting the 'share my connection over airport' option in system preferences but this does not seem to have done the trick.
Any suggestions much appreciated - thanks!
Intel Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

It's true that the Xbox can support wireless, but it's probably more important to ascertain whether the AEBS is "compatible" with Xbox Live. I have a D-Link wireless router (the DI-624), and D-Link is very explicit about firmware versions that are compatible with Xbox Live (for example, v2.42 of their firmware is supported with Xbox Live, but v2.50 is not). I'm not sure what Xbox Live does that's outside the realm of normal network operations, but it's probably worth finding out...

  • Can a non apple network be extended with airport extream?

I have a Verison Fios router and am contimplating buying an airport extream or express. I was wondering if I can extend my network with either one of these routers and if so, how to go about doing this. Thanks.

so if I understand you correctly, you are saying that it is actually possible, but it may take a lot more work on my end?
In almost all cases, it is simply not possible.
There are only a handful of routers that are known to be compatible with Apple's version of WDS.
    Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    BT Voyager 2091 or 2100
    Buffalo WGR-G54
Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not latest versions v5)
    Netgear WGR614 v6
SMC (one model - don't know the model number)
Thompson 585v6 wireless router (40 bit WEP works but stronger encryption does not)
Most of these models are 4-5 years old, or older.

  • Initializing airport base station

    Hi there,
I have an old airport extreme base station connected to my MBP via ethernet cable into the LAN port and the WAN cable plugged into my internal network that has a DHCP server delving IPs. The aiport base station is hat shapped.
I am running 10.5.5 on my MBP.
I am unable to find the airport base station with my airport utility. I can see that an IP address is assigned to my built-in ethernet interface so I know that connectivity runs through the base station.
    What can I do here?
    Cheers,
    Noah

The AirPort Base Station Agent was installed either with OS X or by installing the AirPort utilities that came on the CDs with the AirPort base stations.
This program basically checks the status of the AirPort and periodically goes online to check for updates.

  • AirPort Base Station Agent

AirPort Base Station Agent is in my login items in System Preferences. I have no idea what this is and how it got there. It's listed as an application but it's not in my Applications folder and wasn't found when I did a search. Does anyone know what this is and if I can delete it? Thank you.

Do i need a airport base station of some sort or does my current router work fine.
I'm afraid that this will not help you, but at least you will have some accurate information.
Using wireless only, the AirPort Express can "extend" or "repeat" the wireless network that is provided by another Apple "n" wireless router.
Using wireless only, the AirPort Express can NOT "extend" or "repeat" the wireless signal if it is being produced by another router from another manufacturer.
In this case, you will need to connect the AirPort Express to the other wireless router using a wired Ethernet connection. Post back if you need more information about this type of setup.
