Can only boot restored partition by holding option during startup
So I had installed bootcamp previously and I partitioned my hard drive, and then just recently I restored my partition, and ever since then, every time I restart my computer, if I don't hold down the option key, then my computer will still attempt to boot the windows partition, and all it will do is show a black screen that says "No bootable device found". Is there any way to fix this or do I have to hold option every time I restart my computer?

cause i had a firmware locked down my startup options. And my bootcamp isn't successfully installed onto my window.
So i was thinking about this alternative: for once i set my default os into mac os then everytime if i wanna access to windows, i will go through mac then into windows. And at the end of the day after i shut down my window i could still boot up in mac. Is this idea feasible.

Mac OS drives no longer visible, can only boot windows.
I have 4 internal drives and 1 external drive on my Mac Pro. Three drives are Mac OS, on internal drive is XP, and one is Win 7. At the moment I can only boot from the Windows drives. The Mac drives are not visible from boot camp or at startup holding the option button down. I know the cause, but I dont know how to fix it.
I caused the problem while booted into Win 7. I was trying to install VS2010 beta 2. The program failed to install, and I found out the problem was that the installer was trying to access the Mac disks. I removed the drive numbers from the 3 Mac disks, and the installation worked. After I relettered the disks I was able to see them from Win 7 (not XP).
I assume I somehow messed up bootcamp. I have no idea of how to fix this. I would appreciate any help.We have a BootCamp forum.
Do any of the drives show up in Disk Utility?
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Repair reports and if DU was able to repair them. This could just be a start in repairs and you may need a better utility to finish the job.

Mavericks can only boot in safe mode
In can only boot my Imac 27' (end of 2009) in safe mode.
The problem started in Lion, when the computer suddenly froze.
I upgraded (in safe mode) to Mavericks 10.9.2, took away all Launch Agents and Daemon that are not Apple (both in System and User's), done all the permission repairs, reset memory, fsck and turn the plug off the computer. The only thing I was not able to do is the hardware test (for some reason, the command + D to access the internet testing is not working). I have no external devices or cables attached.
My 2TB hard drive is divided in 3 partitions. I have got 2 user accounts.
Even with all this, I can only start in safe mode.

I would like to try and turn off bonjour, as it seems like a MDNSResponder Error. But need a green light from any of you experts.

My Ipad is saying it needs to connect to itunes but when i go onto itunes it says it can only be restored but it will delete all my memory. HELP!!
No other choice, you have to restore to use your iPad.

I have a FreeAgent GoFlex backup drive (for Mac) after a while the icon disappears from the desktop and can only be restored by reconnecting the firewire. This also happens when I use the USB connection as well. Thanks
Did you use any of the "sleep" drivers supplied? I have found it best to just totally reformat/erase the drives and let the OS handle them.

Boot Camp Partition no longer shows in StartUp Control Panel
My Boot Camp partition no longer shows in StartUp Control Panel, but does show up using Option Key at startup. This started soon after the latest Parallels update. The Boot Camp partition seems normal and healthy in the finder. Once started via the Option Key, Windows XP-SP3 runs fine. Upgrading to BC 3.0 did not have any affect.
I've tried LOTS of troubleshooting strategies, including completely deinstalling Parallels. Deleting obvious preferences, etc.. No joy.

if I remember correctly Parallels installs some kind of file system driver to OSX to access NTFS files system partitions.
The 'case of the missing Windows partition' is widely spread when using these NTFS file system drivers in OSX.
(Others are NTFS-3G; Paragons NTFS for Mac and Tuxera NTFS for Mac).
To my knowledge there is no other remedy to this phenomenon then to deinstall the NTFS drivers.
But as long as the Option-key is working maybe you can live with it.
Or use rEFIt http://refit.sourceforge.net/ as a Boot-Menu.

Resized partition, now can only boot using option key
I made my boot camp partition larger and my os x partition smaller using a 3rd party program. I can still boot into windows, but only using the option key. When I look at my startup disks in OS X, only my OSX partition shows up. Is there any way to make snow leopard recognize this resized partition? Thanks!

I am not familiar with that program but since it is a Windows program I doubt that it has installed anything in OSX.
Most likely that program wasn't even "aware" that it was used on a Mac running WIndows.
And it also might be that that is the reason for your problem.
To run Windows with BootCamp on a Mac OSX has to establish/use a form of hybrid GPT/MBR partitioning.
GPT for OSX and MBR for Windows.
That also means that using any kind pof partitioning tool (resizing etc.) would have to be done best in OSX since only OSX "knows" that there is a Windows partition and can handle the hybrid partitioning accordingly.
First thing I would propose (if not already there) is a backup / clone of your OSX onto an external HD.
Secondly boot your Mac from the OSX DVD and use Disk Utility from it to verify/repair your OSX.

When I installed Windows 7, I couldn't get the Boot Camp utility to install within Windows (I guess because it's 64-bit) so to switch back and forth between OSes, I just shut down the Mac and restart it with the Option key pressed, and select Mac OS X when I want to return to Mac. This has worked for about a month and a half now (ever since I got Windows 7). Suddenly I have problems.
I first had problems booting into Windows or Mac. I got to the grey screen with the Apple logo, with that spinning "progress" thing going for a while, then it would freeze up and get stuck on the grey screen with the Apple logo. I zapped the PRAM. No help. Then, after disconnecting all external drives (I have several) and extra USB devices, I was able to boot from the DVD install disk and reinstall Snow Leopard on my internal drive. Joy, or so I thought. Then I booted into Windows 7, and after some weirdness getting it to start, it did successfully start and ran just peachy.
Then I turned off the Mac and held down the option key (as usual) to return to Mac OS. But now all that happens is that I get a grey screen for a few seconds, then the Mac boots back into Windows 7, which seems to work fine. (I'm in Windows 7 right now.) I turned on one my external drives (Snow Leopard installed, connected via Firewire 800) in hopes that the Mac would boot into that, but same thing. Ignored and back to Windows 7.
Then I thought I'd boot from the install DVD again by putting it in the drive and holding down the C key as I restart, but the same thing--a grey screen for a few seconds, and then booting right into Windows 7. I can't seem to escape Windows 7! It's a bit disturbing when it won't even recognize the install DVD.
I tried to call Apple Care since I'm within my 90 day support window, but of course they are closed. I'm figuring that I'm going to have to take this into an Apple Store, but thought I'd see if anyone has any ideas. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.According to Apple, Win 7 64bit is supported with Bootcamp 3.0. If bootcamp 3.0 is available; I could not find it anywhere on Apple's website. It appears the most recent version is 2.2. The only place I could find 3.0 is not on Apples website and it's a questionable source so I won't post it here.
It may just be a matter of time before Apple makes it available. I'm not suggesting you wait, however if the install disk can't be used, I'm not too sure where u could go from there. Calling Applecare might work.
If you do a simple google search using the terms 'download bootcamp drivers windows 7' u will see what I was referring too.

Since Hotmail was converted to Outlook I can only access through the Mobile option. I keep getting a message suggesting I upgrade to the latest version of Safari. I tried downloading the most recent upgrade that I could find but the problem is still not solved. How do I fix this very annoying situation?
No problem here on 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.9 - is that the version of Safari you have? If not you can download it here:

Using Find My iPhone, I set my MacBook Air I thought was lost to Lost Mode. However, when it was returned to me, upon booting up, it showed a flashing folder with a question mark. After some research I found out you were supposed to hold Option upon boot up. This resulted in a password screen, where I entered the passcode I have entered with Find My iPhone, however I cannot access any WiFi network, as it doesn't show any and being next to my router and putting in the details isn't accepted, and booting up from Macintosh HD just results in a dark grey screen.
I resolved the issue. After launching from Macintosh HD, I held down Shift, and then it prompted me for my PIN, which was the same as the code I entered on Find My iPhone, and then it relaunched and let me log in. I don't know if this is a bug or not, but it seems very inconvenient and not intuitive if it's intended.

Running Macbook Pro, Mac OS 10.6.8, Bootcamp 3.3, & W7 64 Home Premium. What do I use to backup my W7 Partition to create an image like Norton Ghost that I can use to restore windows partition.
Windows itself.
There really are "?" (Help} icons and the backup feature will even remind you to create a system restore image the first time.
(I still think a reference manual for $25 makes sense too, or at least learn to use Google.)

Why is my mac mini server apparently looking for wireless while I hold option at startup?
Besides the Lion recovery partition on my Mac Mini, I have 2 partitions: One with Lion and one with Snow Leopard Server that I often boot from in order to test some things. However, it takes FOREVER at the gray screen while I hold option, until the various startup disks appear.
There is a spinning wheel next to a popup menu button, and the wireless symbol. The Mac Mini is apparently looking for wireless for some specified time, then finally gives up and says, "Ok, here are your disk partitions." This is very annoying, and I would like to know what it is, and how to turn it off. My Mini is plugged into Ethernet.

Might try a variation of this from older OSes...
This command adds a delay, in this case 45 seconds, before displaying the Login Window.
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow StartupDelay -int 45
If the Login Window UI detects that the network servers are available when it starts, it will skip the delay, also if network servers become available before the delay expires, the Login Window UI cancels the delay and displays. -
Grey lock when I hold option on startup
When I hold down Option on boot up, it loads to a grey screen with a dark grey padlock. Under that is a password entry field then a dark-grey circle with a right pointing arrow. I've tried every password I can think of but it does nothing. When I click enter the password just dissapears.
How do I fix this?
I wish to be able to select which disk I want to boot from when I hold down option.

Pretty much this will work if you are able to boot the HD and have a copy of Snow Leopard.
(I have OSX Lion and the SN disk worked for me).
Put in the disk, open terminal and type 'open /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/Applications' then it will open to a folder then select 'Firmware Password Utility' which allows you to re-set the FW password.

Removed bootcamp now can only boot with option
I recently removed my windows xp on a bootcamp partition....now when I reboot the imac, I get a message that says there is no bootable drive....use installation discs....
If I power up with my remote's menu button held, it starts like bootcamp used too but only shows the mac HD....and it boots fine in that case.....I think some remnant of the original bootcamp wasn't removed....How can I fully remove it?Open the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences and select the Mac OS X system.

I upgraded my iMac to OSX10.8 (from Snow Leopard). Prior to the upgrade I was able to boot into a Tiger partition on my back-up drive. I want to install Snow Leopard on the partion so that I can access Quicken however I am no longer able to boot into the drive. When I hold down the option key at startup the drive appears but
when I select it, my iMac freezes and I have to power off. I also tried starting up from the Snow Leopard DVD and same thing happens. I tried running Disk Utility and it says the drive is fine. If I open the Snow Leopard DVD, the Install Mac OS X is X-ed out.
How can I install Snow Leopard on the partition?Well, I've "solved" the problem...I connected the external drive to my daughter's Macbook which still has Snow Leopard as the OS. I was able to then install SL on the erased partition and dl and install all current updates. When I reconnected the drive to my iMac, I am now able to boot into the SL partition.
The only minor issue is that Keyboard Assistant doesn't want to recognize Apple's extended USB keyboard once in Snow Leopard. This tells me that the keyboard may be part of the problem. I have previously seen startup issues that were due to Apple keyboards...my previous white iMac (upgraded to one of the newer aluminum keyboards) wouldn't boot up after an OS upgrade and when I took it to Apple Store they plugged in a previous generation keyboard and it started up fine.
