Can only draw circle and square in Illustrator CS5 and Photoshop CS5

I am experiencing a strange bug that seems to be affecting both Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5. In Illustrator, when I try to draw a rectangle or ellipse I can only draw circles and squares. Also I can't change the color of selected objects. When I try to change its fill nothing happens. I can also only drag objects on the 0, 45 and 90 degree angles. Also I can no longer select off an object by clicking on the artboard. When I click on the artboard nothing happens.
Similarly in Photoshop I can only draw straight lines using the brush tool. The marquee tool is also not functioning properly. When I try to use the marquee tool the marching ants form a square but when I release the mouse it selects a rectangular portion. Strangely if I use the marquee tool and make selection I can press the shift key and add to it but this second selection's marching ants are not square but are properly rectangular.
Since the problem seems to be affecting both Illustrator and Photoshop I'm thinking it's probably some kind of system conflict or perhaps an application running in the background is affecting it. Also if I restart my mac the problem goes away. Unfortunately the problem eventually returns.
Anyway I'm pretty sure most of the suggested fixes involve systematically going through all the programs running in the background and trying to determine which if any might be affecting Illustrator and Photoshop but I just thought I'd post something in case someone else had the problem or knew of any fixes.

Ok I figured out the problem. It was another application called teleport which lets you control 2 macs with one mouse. It requires a hot key and in my case that was the shift key. Even though it was running it was still affecting me. Had to quit it and restart. If you're having a similar problem I'd check to see you're not running any other applications that can be activated with a hot key.

I have a mackbook pro and an iMac if I buy a time capsule 2tb airport, I can use it with time machine and what would be the best way to use it.
There is no particular setup required for TM.. both computers will create their own backup sparsebundle which is like a virtual disk.. Pondini explains the whole thing if you read the reference I gave you.

Up to you.. you can plug the external drive into the TC and enjoy really slow file transfers or you can plug it into your computer and use it as external drive.. which is faster than the TC.. and TM can include it in the backup.

If the volume buttons don't work then you can go into settings, general, scroll all the way down to accessibility, click it, turn on assistive touch, go back and a little gray square with a white circle should appear. Click that and then click devices and there should be a volume control there.

Can only get XBOX 360 to work by unplugging and then plugging in ethernet cable?

I have 2 desktop computers, 1 laptop computer and 1 Xbox 360 using this WRT54GS ver 6 router. The desktops and the xbox are wired and the laptop is wireless. I replaced my old linksys router which I never had a problem with for this one. If my desktop computer is turned off and I turn on my XBOX, the router does not recognize the Xbox. I mean the XBOX is plugged into port 3 and that light does not flash on the router. Now, if I turn on my computer and then turn on my xbox, it still doesn't work. If I turn on my computer, turn on my XBOX and then unplug the xbox ethernet cable from the back of the router and then plug it back in, then the router recognizes it and it works great. I have had 2 chat sessions and I phone session with linksys and they cannot figure it out. They had me go into my xbox and set a static IP address, gateway and DNS. Then she had me go into forward a few ports on the router. I never had to do any of this stuff with the old router by the way. The last guy I talked to on the phone said I need to figure out a way to turn off "MAC Address cloning" in the xbox. I checked and there is no way to do this, so I think he is wrong about this. Does anyone have ANY ideas as to why this problem is happening?

I had the same problem and I just typed my settings in manually on my xbox 360's network settings.(IP, and DNS).

Fontproblems and fontcaches in Illustrator CS4 and CS5

Hello all,
I've been having a serious and severe problem using Ilustrator and fonts.
As this is a very complex problem to explain, I'll try to make it easy to understand.
First I'll tell you the specifications and software used:
Imac 27 inch running MAC OS X 10.6.7 with follow software:
Illustrator CS4 + Illustrator CS5, both installed
Fontreserve (running a central server and macs connect through a MAC-client) http://www.extensis.com/en/support/font-reserve.jsp
So we use an external third party fontsoftware to manage and activate our fonts used in Illustrator.
We only have the required system fonts installed on our systems.
We recently ran in a big issue concerning fonts within Illustrator.
I'll try to explain what the problem really is ...
So normally we boot up Illustrator and we activate our fonts in fontreserve.
The fonts get loaded in Illustrator. So that does work like it should.
But the problem begins when we deactivate fonts.
Font reserve does deactivate them and in Illustrator the deactivated fonts are gone or so it seems ...
After a restart, I only start Illustrator. So our client fontreserve stays closed.
I opened the job I worked on before the restart and Illustrator opens the document and loads the fonts.
You read it right, Illustrator does find all the fonts which, before the restart, were deactivated.
Where does he gets those fonts?
So I started to investigate and tried a couple of things.
1) I physically moved the fontreserve-plugin out Illustrator so it will not be loaded on startup.
That didn't fix it because Illustrator still finds the fonts.
2) I physically plugged out the network cable to be sure Illustrator could not contact our fontserver.
Sadly he still did find the fonts.
3) I used "Tweak Freak" to clear my fontcaches. I also searched for "AdobeFnt" to clean out the cache from Adobe itself.
This did not work either.
4) I tried opening the document again but this time in CS5. And guess what? Illustrator CS5 asks for all the fonts that are missing, which is correct because not one font has been activated.
Strangly enough I decided to reopen Illustrator CS4 (Illustrator CS5 still beiing open as well), and suddenly Illustrator CS4 asks for the fonts too?
A minute ago he still found all the fonts and after opening Illustrator CS5, it does not ...
So Adobe what is the connection between Illustrator CS4 and CS5?
And where does Illustrator store its fontcache?
It would be nice to run a script on shutdown te delete all possible fontcaches.
So after spending a couple of hours fixing this problem, it seems that I still don't quite understand where the problem lies.
I'm hoping you can.
As this is an urgent matter, I hope to get an answer or support as soon as possible.

You should be able to see what files Adobe Illustrator has open by using the Activity Monitor.app application.
To do so, open the Activity Monitor application (it's in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder). Locate Adobe Illustrator in the list and then double-click on it. This should open up a new window like shown in the image below:
Switch to the Open Files and Ports tab, and it should list every open file that Illustrator is using.

Help please, I can only see outlines when I use the shape tool in CS5 ?

When I open action script 2 or 3 in CS5, and draw a rectangle or any shape, I can only see outlines? The problem IS NOT the outlines button that is in the layers palet as I have changed this many times and it has mad no difference and the problem IS NOT because I have selected no fill or colour for the shape.

BUT interestingly, when I have opened someone elses .fla work document, I can draw and fill shapes without a problem, which makes me wonder whether I am missing some basis setting when I start with my own new document ??

I've learned something new since that posting you point to that might help--it has the same effect as using the outline tool on the layer, but globally. In the main menu select View -> Preview Mode -> and anything except Outlines.

Need a pro's advice - 3D and annimation of Illustrator files in AE CS5

I'm using CS5 and I'm routinely using Illustrator logo files in product videos that I'm editing, and I'd like to add more features to the video, but I can't seem to find answers to what I assumed would be a pretty common situation.
I'd like to add some depth to the logo files (3D) and animate them for the intro of the videos. I've come to the conclusion that After Effects is the best solution for animation, which I can then import into the timeline of Premiere Pro. Assuming the aforementioned is correct, I'm having a hard time figuring out how to import these Illustrator files into After Effects, and if this is the ideal environment in which to create the 3D file. There are 3D options within Illustrator of course, and then there are options within Photoshop, and yet again in After Effects and Premiere Pro. I'm not sure where to begin with this, and all the resources I've seen address how to do this with text but not with an existing Illustrator file.
So, my question is, what do the pros recommend as the best method of making Illustrator files into a 3D object that can be animated within After Effects and/or Premiere Pro. I'm not in a position to buy a plug-in to simplify the process (Zaxwerks doesn't have a CS5 compatible version yet anyway) so I'm curious what would be the best way to achieve these effects using existing CS5 software and features. Any links to resources that address this specific issue would also be much appreciated.

Invigorator Pro, similar to C4D "just works" and there's a sneak peek of new features on the Zaxwerks website for version 5 (check their blog), but it's not yet available, so this probably will not help you. LW is nice, but not for what you need. I've been a "Waver" ever since v4, but it's strictly polygonal and even in LW 10 there is still a separation between modeling and animation. This has benefits for large projects and reusable scenes consisting of repeating items such as they occur on TV series (for which LW is still notorious, anyways), but not so much for what you have in mind. Text there is always immediately converted to polygons, bevels need to be cleaned up, materials need to be assigend fresh etc.. While this doesn't bother me in any way and is a snap after all those years, it is not something I would recommend to someone doing your kind of work. Every time the cleint changes his mind you have to start over or work on frozen polygon data, which can become tricky with complex contours needing to look smooth... It's really more for "serious" animation work...

I can't find the videos I want to import to Photoshop CS5

Hello everyone! I can't seem to import videos to Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended, all the videos I have on my computer have a wmv format. Every time I launch PSCS5, these are my steps: file>import>video frames to layers, but when I click on the folder that I put my videos in, no videos show up in that folder. I have the last version of QuickTime Installed on my pc. I'm using windows vista and my pc is HP. Thank you in advance.

To my knowledge, quicktime does not support wmv, but it does support avi, but only a limited set of codecs. If your system is fast enough, use the full frame/no codec option when converting or creating videos. Otherwise convert/create video using mov or mpg. Another option is to use an image sequence, A series of images using a numeric sequencial as part of the file name. Photoshop can import the first image and will auto load the remainder of the images, as long as you have the image sequence check box marked. Photoshop will then assume this is a video and can be used in your timeline like any other video.

Brush and Pencil tool not working in Photoshop CS5 trial

I dowloaded the Photoshop CS5 trial yesterday 2 days ago. Everything worked perfectly yesterday. Unfortunately, today...the brush and pencil tool doesn't work. Anyone have any idea why?

Cannot Draw Circles or Squares in Captivate (Holding down SHIFT doesn't work.)

Hi,
I am trying to add squares and circle shapes to a Captivate 8 project.
Before I click to draw the shape, I hold down the SHIFT button to constrain the proportions. Captivate draws me an oval or a rectangle all the same.
Error testing I have tried:
Trying to add a square in PowerPoint by holding SHIFT work (so not a hardware issue?)
Resizing my dratted rectangles & ovals by holding SHIFT in Captivate does constrain the proportions, but not to a shape I require!
Resizing images while holding SHIFT also constrains proportions.
The same error also occurs in my copy of Captivate 7?!
I'm completely puzzled. I know it's basic function, but it's vital for me to be able to create a smart-looking layout. Is it simply not possible to draw "perfect" squares and circles in Captivate?

Don't know if it is an oversight, I'm always logging that lack of use of SHIFT, think it is just not considered important enough. My mind tells it is very important, but I'm just a user.
That is what I told you... in CP8 you need a lot more clicks and mouse movements to get to everything (sighing).
The screenshot you are showing me is the Properties panel for a shape, tab 'Style', not 'Options'.You have to click on 'Options' to see the former Transform accordion. Splitting up the too long Properties panel of CP7 in two panels and tabs causes incrementing the number of clicks. And it didn't avoid scrolling, as you can see in this Style part. Will stop ranting, even after so many months, do not succeed in liking the UI shift.
