Can only purchase and not Rent certain Movies????

Hi,
I'm a little confused after this new set up of purchasing is available now. I just went into Top Movies and now there is only a "Preview" and "Purchase" option and no rental option on such releases like "Cloverfield"....... but I only noticed this on certain releases .
Can someone explain why you could purchase it but not be able to rent only??

The announcement was Day 1 Purchase availability, not day 1 rental ability. Not much has changed for those that only rent.
Before this Day 1 availability news, you would only get movies show up when the studio let Apple put it up and then the studio also decides if for purchase only or rental as well.
The studios decides when to release for rental as they want to get as much money from DVD release first.
The recent news just means you can purchase movies now on the same day as DVD release. However with that said, some studios said they will also release for rental day 1, other still reserve the right to hold off on that.

Why are so many on demand movies for which you only have the option buy and not rent? I beginning to find this very upsetting given the amount of money I pay for my monthly service. I guess this just another ploy to squeeze more dollars from subscribers. If this continues I guess I'll either have to get Netflixs or switch providers.

It's the movie studio's last ditch effort to save a archaic business model. Their answer to sagging DVD sales? "We won't let you rent movies--we're going to force you to buy them." The plan is to not allow movie rentals for at least a month or two after the DVD is released for sale, on the theory that people just can't wait, and will buy it. There may be a few movie fans that will go for that, but the rest of us will just wait.
I use a combo of netflix Hulu, Vudu and amazon prime, and only buy from on demand if it's cheaper, I can't wait or unavailable on the others, and that is rare, but it happens.

Is anyone getting aggravated by the number of movies on demand that you can only buy. It seems as if I am running into this issue all too frequently now. Sorry for your frustration with the Flex View service. Most new movies are available to buy 10 days before it is available to rent.

Why can i buy, but not rent, certain movies on apple tv?

I rented Batman Begins last night with no problems and then thought I'd watch The Dark Knight tonight but it's only available to buy, not to rent. I understand that some movies are restricted based on the requirements of the distributor but it seems strange to block The Dark Knight but not Batman Begins from rental. Any advice or work-arounds gratefully recieved. I'm in Australia, if that makes a difference.

This is becoming more and more common. My take on it is that the studios have only just started to understand the ramifications of the Apple TV model. They're losing money because Apple TV makes it so easy to rent a movie, and then rent it a second time IF you wish to, and so people are less inclined to buy (I know for certain this is true for me, so I assume that other people have started adopting this behaviour too). So what seems to be happening is that when a movie is first released it's rentable and then later when you go back to look for it again it's suddenly purchase-only. Also, I've noticed that some movies that did poor box office but got great reviews, are mysteriously 'rental only'. I suspect this is an effort to try and recoup some money from their crummy marketing decisions.
And they wonder why they have a problem with piracy.

What do you mean 'only play and not buy' ? If you mean that a song has 'play' against it in the store then that implies that you've already bought it and it's in your iTunes library

I have had this identical issue (on an Apple TV3) and was helped by Apple Support who guided me to go to the Settings Menu on the Apple TV and did a RESET. You will need to re connect to your WIFI and your iTunes account (passwords etc).

OK, I think I understand what's happening.
Movies are now stored in iCloud: see http://www.apple.com/itunes/inside-itunes/2012/03/movies-now-available-on-icloud .html
So they may take a while to download to your Mac. Movies are big, after all.
I believe you can guarantee the movie stays on your Mac by going to Preferences (in the iTunes menu at the top), and going to the "Advanced" tab, and checking "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library".
