Can OnPlus detect rogue DHCP servers?

On one of my customer's networks I seem to be getting a lot of duplicate IP addresses being detected.  Assuming these messages are valid, I suspect there are additional DHCP server(s) on the network somewhere.  It's a physically large building owned by a church with one flat (layer 2) network (wired and wireless) including different types of users (students, retired nuns, office workers, clergy).  There are lots of opportunities for someone to connect nearly anything to the network.
I would like to be able to detect these possible rogue DHCP servers.  Can the OnPlus that I have installed there help me?  It has been nearly impossible to find the devices with dupes based on MAC address so far.
Thanks.

Hi Chris,
ON100 supports rogue DHCP server detection by default (search OnPlus documentation for ROGUE DHCP events). The default behavior is that the ON100 learns the available DHCP servers on the network whenever the ON100 (re)boots, and if ever it sees broadcast DHCP server replies from a different source IP than the ones that were available, it will trigger this type of event. Unfortunately, if the rogue DHCP server is already present when the ON100 is booted on the network, the ON100 will consider it as pre-existing and therefore won't consider it as an invalid DHCP server.
You can override this simplistic behavior by adding an explicit DHCP monitor to one or more hosts on the network, this gives the ON100 a definitive list of authorized DHCP servers, and then only if a truly rogue DHCP server appears should you see these events.
The Duplicate IP monitor is a separate monitor altogether than the DHCP monitor (which additionally provides the rogue DHCP server detection) and doesn't necessarily indicate a rogue DHCP server on the network. I understand that misconfigured windows servers with ICS enabled are a common source of rogue DHCP servers on networks.

If you still have the ticket open with Microsoft Premier Support for the DHCP migration, I would contact the engineer that helped you explaining what you are seeing so they can resolve it. After all, it is part of the ticket.
Please note, that TechNet forum support is not aligned with Microsoft Premier Support. They are two separate entities.
In the meantime, you can try the following, but I would still email/contact the engineer assigned to your ticket for verification, since they are familiar with your infrastructure and servers. (This was quoted from:
    http://support.iyogi.com/networking/internet/when-netsh-dhcp-show-server-command-is-executed-and-you-are-getting-invalid-dhcp-server-references.html )
Run the ‘Netsh’ command to verify, if the ‘CN=NetServices’ container contains the references to the invalid DHCP servers.
Check the properties of the DHCPROOT key under CN=Configuration, CN=Services, ‘CN=NetServices’, ‘DC=Domain’, and ‘DC=com’ to verify if there is a ‘DHCPServer’ attribute containing the references for the invalid DHCP servers.
    Delete invalid references.
    Force replication
After replication is successful, verify by executing the ‘netsh dhcp show server’ command.

  • Why connect two dhcp servers with different IP addresses?

so for an assignment at college we had to configure a router connected to two switches which both had a server connected to them.
the computers were connected via dhcp to either server however each side had a different IP. we have now been asked to justify as to why two servers were used with different IP which I cannot quite produce a business orientated answer.
I can understand connecting two dchp servers on same IP to increase fault tolerance but I do not understand using two separate IP addresses.

    Hi,
Does “using two separate IP addresses“ mean 2 subnets which are connected by router?
If you have separately configured 2 DHCP servers on the 2 subnets, and want 1 of the 2 DHCP servers to provide fault tolerance for the other. You need to use an RFC 1542–compliant router, or DHCP relay agent, in order to forward DHCP broadcast traffic.
If there is any misunderstanding about your question, please correct.

  • New VLan can't talk to DHCP server

We have just created a new vlan (172.18.1.0/24 vlan 3) on our network and we are trying to use an exsisting DHCP server (192.168.0.1 vlan 8) But the clients on the 172.18.1.0 network can't connect to this DHCP server on vlan 8. My questions are.
    1. Do we need to specify vlan 3 on the switchport that the DHCP server is plugged into?
    2. Is there something @ L3 we need to enable to pass these DHCP server messages too across these vlans?
Has any used DHCP servers on different subnets?
    Any info would be great.

You need to configure an IP helper on the appropriate VLAN interface(s). Routers, by default, will not forward broadcast packets. Since DHCP client messages use the destination IP address of 255.255.255.255 (all Nets Broadcast), DHCP clients will not be able to send requests to a DHCP server on a different subnet unless the DHCP/BootP Relay Agent is configured on the router. The DHCP/BootP Relay Agent will forward DHCP requests on behalf of a DHCP client to the DHCP server. The DHCP/BootP Relay Agent will append its own IP address to the source IP address of the DHCP frames going to the DHCP server. This allows the DHCP server to respond via unicast to the DHCP/BootP Relay Agent. The DHCP/BootP Relay Agent will also populate the Gateway IP address field with the IP address of the interface on which the DHCP message is received from the client. The DHCP server uses the Gateway ip address field to determine the subnet from which the DHCPDISCOVER, DHCPREQUEST, or DHCPINFORM message originates.

  • One Internet Connection, Two different LANS & Two DHCP Servers, How to share internet without conflict?

I have two LANs and one internet connection.  Each LAN has its own DHCP server.  I want to be able to have internet access on BOTH LANs but don't
want to have a DHCP conflict between them.
The main LAN is a Time Warner Cable modem and a Cisco router running DHCP going to a 48 port switch that has all the workstations connected.
The second is a stand alone Windows 2012 WDS server which is ONLY use to image computers via WDS. The server is running DHCP as well and is connected to another 48 port switch where I connect systems that need to be imaged.
I want to be able to provide internet access on LAN with the Windows 2012 WDS server so after I image the computers I can download drivers direct from the internet.   The Windows WDS server has two NIC cards but I am only using one.   Is
it possible to configure this so the internet from the main LAN is shared to the WDS server and its clients without causing problems with the two DHCP servers?   Here is a basic network diagram.   Thanks!

    Hi Adam,
To share the internet on secondary VLAN, please follow the steps below:
Connect the secondary switch to Cisco router
Configure the devices on secondary VLAN to use Cisco router as its' gateway
Configure NAT for secondary VLAN on Cisco router
Due to different manufacturer has different ways to configure, for detailed configuration information, please consult the manufacturer of the switch and router.

  • Can I failover a DHCP failover server?

    Greetings,
I'm in the process of putting together an enterprise wide DHCP design.  I'm planning on leveraging the hot failover feature in Server 2012.  I'll be using a hub-and-spoke topology with a server in our primary datacenter acting as the failover partner
for all the DHCP servers at branch offices.
My question is can I failover the failover server?  Basically can I configure the failover partner for all the primary servers to fail over to yet another DHCP server in a secondary datacenter?
    Thanks!

One line answer to your question is no. Since a given scope on a DHCP server can be part of one and only one failover relationship and given that all the scopes on your Hub DHCP server are part of different failover relationships distributed across
your spoke servers you cannot make those scopes a part of failover relationship with another DHCP Server.
Having said that, in case your hub DHCP Server fails the spoke DHCP servers can take over. Yet if you are concerned about data loss then you can have appropriate disaster recovery\backup solutions in place to safeguard the DHCP data on the hub server.

  • NetBoot and Multiple DHCP Servers

    Hey everyone,
We have a NetBoot machine running here at my school (where I work). It was working like a champ until a couple of weeks ago when our network got upgraded and there are now 2 DHCP servers on our network. That, for some reason, is totally screwing up our NetBooting process.
Here's what I think is happening, and maybe someone can tell me if I right or wrong. NetBoot (or BSDP protocol) is a "broadcast" protocol. (That means it's always just floating around out there on the network. ) NetBoot (BSDP) protocol gets injected into the DHCP stream, and any machine that gets DHCP can get BSDP, and essentially NetBoot.
The problem is with BSDP. BSDP protocol wants to have all of it's "broadcasts" come from the same server. So when we had 1 DHCP server, everything was fine, because client machines would get their whole NetBoot process from one machine... all of the BSDP broadcasts were coming from our 1 DHCP server.
Now, we have 2 DHCP servers. What happens is, a client will get some of it's BSDP broadcasts from one DHCP server, and some from another... which it does not like at all.
I recently read somewhere that it is possible to somehow make one of our DHCP servers the "authoritative" server, to which all of the clients will go to get their NetBooting info.
Does this sound in any way right? Are we on the right track ? Has anyone seen this before? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million.
    Mike

Now, we have 2 DHCP servers. What happens is, a
a client will get some of it's BSDP broadcasts from
one DHCP server, and some from another... which it
    does not like at all.
Not unless your new DHCP server is also a NetBoot server and is set to provide NetBoot services. BSDP and DHCP are not the same thing. If what you were saying were true, it wouldn't be possible to have DHCP and NetBoot offered by different servers.
It IS possible, however, that the two DHCP servers are causing problems by both servicing DHCP requests for the same clients. If you've got multiple DHCP servers on the same subnet (or your router's configured to pass DHCP requests between subnets), you should make sure that only one of the DHCP servers answers requests from any given client. In our world, our Novell server is the default DHCP server on our subnet, but I keep a list of excluded MAC addresses on that server so that my Macintosh clients don't get addresses from it. On the Mac OS X server, I'm careful to limit my address ranges only to those machines which have static address maps in NetInfo. That way, our servers coexist, but they don't overlap.
It's not clear from your message whether your previously solitary DHCP server was your Mac OS X server, or whether one of the two DHCP servers is that box. But whatever the servers are, it might be helpful to turn off one of them to see if the same problem occurs (assuming you can, without major network disruptions). If that's not possible, can you talk to your network admins to see if there's some way to isolate your clients and one of the servers--in other words, see if there's some way to keep DHCP servers from responding to the same requests.
There may be any number of other reasons why this problem has cropped up. You may need to dust off a hub and a copy of Ethereal or EtherPeek to sniff what's happening on the network. You might also try NetBooting in verbose mode, to see where the process craps out. IIRC, there'a decent guide for this kind of troubleshooting over at Bombich's site (www.bombich.com).
    Good luck.

  • DHCP scope setings from multiple DHCP Servers

Is there any way to check any particular option is configured in all scopes from multiple DHCp servers.
for eg:- we would like to check if any scope has option 150 is configured in multiple DHCP servers.
I guess there are lots of cmdlets available from Win2k12 DHCP servers.
    Regards, Nidhin.CK

    Hi, Nidhin...
I use NETSH tool for this, can redirect results to file or filter w/ FIND.
    Example:
NETSH dhcpserver \\SERVERNAME dump | FIND /I "set optionvalue 150"
    Hope this helps!

  • Guest Anchors and external DHCP servers

    Hi,
We are using guest anchors (GA) for supporting wireless guest user.
Until now we used internal DHCP server on the GA but now we want to move to external.
    For example:
The guest will reside on 192.168.0.x, this is separated by a firewall from the inside network and is not routable on the inside.(this is the guest interface of the GA)
The DHCP server will be somewhere on the internal network only reachable by GA's management interface.
Is it possible for DHCP requests to be forwarded to the DHCP server originating from the management interface?
If this is not how it should happen, than what other options are there for placing the external DHCP servers?
Let me know if you need more information regarding our solution..
    Thank you,
    Laszlo

    Hello Laszlo,
Yes, what you want to do can be done but there are few things that you have to consider.
First is that you are not going to use the WLC as the DHCP server so you should go to the interface configuration and point the DHCP server to the external one.
Now, what you want to do here is to make the wireless LAN controller a DHCP relay agent (or proxy), this way the wireless LAN controller is the one handling all the DHCP requests and it is going to be the one asking for an IP address in behalf of the client using the management interface. This behavior is enabled by default and I believe you have it already configured because it is necessary for the internal DHCP server of the WLC to work; it is configured on the "Controller" tab > Advanced > DHCP. On new versions of software this option is configurable by interface.
There is a catch though, if the DHCP server is an ASA or if the request has to go through an ASA or firewall, this might not work because by design some ASAs will drop every DHCP request comming from a relay agent so just consider this when you do these type of deployments.
If you have any questions let me know.

  • Out of available IP addresses on one DHCP server, will other DHCP servers field the request?

I have three WinServer 2012 R2 domain controllers that also act as DNS and DHCP servers.
I have a guest wireless network that has its own subnect, 10.121.176.0/20
We have our DHCP scopes split this way across the three domain controllers with a DHCP lease time of 1 day
    Domain controller 1, 10.121.176.11 - 10.121.181.255 for a total of 1,525 addresses
    Domain controller 2, 10.121.182.0 - 10.121.186.255 for a total of 1,280 addresses
    Domain controller 3, 10.121.187.0 - 10.121.191.254 for a total of 1,279 addresses
This gives us a total of 4,084 addresses to hand out on our guest wireless network which is plenty. I just looked at each servers stats and this is what I see
Domain controller 1 - 717 addresses in use, 808 available
Domain controller 2 - 900 addresses in use, 380 available
Domain controller 3 - 1280 address in use, 0 available
On domain controller 3 I am seeing lots of DHCP events
Event ID 1063 - There are no IP addresses available for lease in the scope or superscope "GuestWireless-176
Event ID 20287 - DHCP client request from 28E14CE87EFB was dropped since the applicable IP address ranges in scope/superscope GuestWireless-176 are out of available IP addresses
    Two questions:
Once Domain Controller 3 rejects the DHCP request since it is out of addresses, will this request be fulfilled by one of my other two domain controllers?
Is there any way to even out the leases on these DHCP servers? Not sure the mechanism behind a client choosing one DHCP server over another

1 yes, the dhcp server who's scope is full will not do a dhcp
    'offer'
2 dhcp that answers fastest with a 'offer' will win. A delay is configurable (but changes nothing
about the root scenario were the fastest will win)
Note that if the scopes overlap on the servers, they might not lease out all the addresses in the scope.
I would enlarge the scope as you will want to fence against unavailability of one of the servers (or a network connection for that matter). you currently have more addresses leased out than any set of two of your servers can offer.

  • DVD-Audio and "can not detect sound blaster card" with Audigy2 Va

I recently purchased an "Audigy2 Value" card from an eBay user, because I recently purchased some DVD-Audio discs. I downloaded the Audigy2 drivers from the website, and the Creative MediaSource player. 5. Surround sound worked fine for me, though sometimes the driver would reset to the default 2/2. sound and I would have to re-select 5. sound, which was annoying.
Then I was completely unable to get the MediaSource player to recognise my DVD-Audio discs, and the EAX functionality of the player would never work. The EAX logo never appeared in the player. When I tried installing the MediaSource player from an install disc, I got the message "can not detect sound blaster card". Then I discovered the world of EEPROM problems.
I followed advice from some other threads, including using ScanPCI to get information on the card, which yielded the following result.
When installed on my machine (Asus A7A266 motherboard) the ScanPCI reads:

(Just a note: above you can clearly see that it does not say I have an Audigy, it thinks it is a SBLi've. Is this normal? The card IS an Audigy 2, it says so on the card.)
So, I put the card back on my own PC, thinking this has fixed my EEPROM, but I get the same as before. Subsystem ID 0002h. And of course the install software will not detect the card.
I realise that I could go back to using the web drivers, but this still leaves me with MediaSource not recognising the card and not enabling DVD-Audio or EAX, which is why I bought the card in the first place!
I have heard that the VIA chipset is possibly to blame for the EEPROM problems on the Audigy cards, and certainly it seems like it is not permanent, since it gave different information on the other PC. So now I am seriously considering getting a new motherboard.
Do other motherboards cause this same problem? I don't want to buy another board and get the same trouble. All I want is to be able to install my MediaSource and have it recognise my card so I can listen to my DVD-Audio discs.
    Cheers,
    Russ.

Figured out my problem. Installing the drivers from the web to begin with was a bad idea. They just did not work properly with the card.
The "card not found" problem has gone as well, after installing it in another PC. I am also using the proper install disc now, as the other one I was using turned out to not be for the Audigy 2 value after all, but was an Audigy 2 install disc. That easily explains the "Card not found" error. The differing results from the ScanPCI program are still bizarre, though.
Thanks to all of the people on the forum who posted information in other threads to help me deal with this issue. For now I am sticking with the original drivers from the disc and I am not upgrading.

  • APPLE/DEVS Read this! Windows 7 CAN'T detect the iPhone 5s but iTunes CAN detect it! WEIRD, huh?!..

    just a summary...
i have a iphone 3G which i have been using for a long time and now i got an iphone 5s.. troubleshooting this kind of stuff is not new to me from computers to smartphones.. the internet has a vast majority of information and all you need to do is type in the right "KEYWORD".. i'm that kind of guy that looks for the answer before i try to look on it on my own.. i'm a DIY kind of guy as long as there is an instruction on how to do it..
    now, back to the topic..
so i was trying to copy some of my pictures on my iphone 5s to my PC for backup purposes and to see the quality of the images but the portable device doesn't show up unlike my iphone 3G which is f***ing WEIRD.. been tinkering with this over the past 5 days since i have nothing to do and testing the new features of this phone but to no avail.. searched all over the internet but still none..
so last night, i was really determined since i can't sleep and also connected my iphone 3G to my PC while the iphone 5s is connected.. so here is what shows up on my devices and printers and device manager..
i can totally see the pics on my iphone 3G but not on my iphone 5s.. totally amazing.. good job apple!
the picture under devices shows my iphone 3G and the other 2 on unspecified is my iphone 5s.. the iPhone under there is being used as my source of internet since this is tethered so i can have access and post this in here so that APPLE will know how f***ed up their SOFTWARE is is..
so i downloaded itunes a couple of times, and i can't remember how many already, i think 5 times or more and then uninstalled all apple softwares (itunes, apple application support, apple mobile device support and etc as long as there is apple in it) and then reinstalled itunes but still none..
so i went on device manager removed my iphone 3G and the only one that would show there is the Apple Mobile Device USB driver under USB controllers..
and then i uninstalled the driver, looked for the driver myself by just it doesn't show up in here where you are directed to look for the driver and oh im using 64 bit just so everyone knows and i already found out that my system is using the usbaapl64.sys file in windows>system32>drivers..
so last night i installed, reinstalled itunes and then suddenly my drive D: was gone and i received an error or a "!" on my drive and my drive is not being detected.
Error: windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damage. (code 19).
i unstalled the driver in device manager and then scan hardware changes, updated the driver automatically and manually and it is saying that i have the latest hardware but i can't use my DVD drive with the error on it..
so today i searched for that e-fing error and found this http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/code-19-error.htm
"4. Uninstall Apple iTunes. While that may sound a little drastic, iTunes is the cause of enough Code 19 errors to make it into this troubleshooting.
If removing iTunes works, you might try installing it again from scratch, which doesn't always reintroduce the problem. See How to Properly Reinstall a Software Program for general advice."
so i then uninstalled my itunes, uninstalled my driver and then updated it and "walla!". i can see my DVD drive again. i am using iTunes64Setup v12.0.1.26 just so everyone knows and this setup can detect both my iphones and my iphone 5s is using the latest version which is iOS 8.1.2..
after reinstallation of itunes my DVD drive can be seen and just  noticed how APPLE SOFTWARES are so ****** up.. CAUSING A LOT OF TROUBLE AND DAMAGES..
so going back to the topic..
i was able to find a way (AFTER HOW MANY HOURS of TROUBLESHOOTING) on how my iphone 5s was able to detect the portable device or should i say the images on my iphone 5s where the autoplay pops up and everything..
so i went on device manager, uninstalled apple mobile device USB driver, disconnected my iphone 5s, UNLOCKED my iphone 5s, connected it to my PC, clicked on TRUST this PC, on my PC the sound for a USB being connected sounded, and at the bottom right, automatically installed the drivers and then the autoplay popped up with the matching PORTABLE DEVICES on COMPUTER where i can browse the internal storage and the pictures..
so now i opened iTunes and BOOOM!
iTunes doesn't detect my iphone 5s but i can browse on the images on my phone..
so again i went to device manager, uninstalled the driver for apple iphone under portable devices, scanned for hardware changes, updated the driver manually by selecting drive C: so it would automatically find the correct drive..
so now, my iphone can be detected by itunes but not on my COMPUTER.. see how ****** UP this is?!.. JEEEEEEEEEZ!!
Now i finally found the SOLUTION on how to do this and vice versa.. UNTIL APPLE decides to FIX their SOFTWARE/DRIVER issues..
if you want to scan or browse the images on your iphone 5s on your computer all you need to do is do this:
[for those who don't know how to reach this part, here is a GUIDE on how to open this is: click on the device > click on update driver software > browse my computer for driver software > let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer]
and then you will see the screen below
click on MTP USB Device and then click on Next, after it finishes installing the drivers, your PC will automatically detect a new portable device but in order for you to access the images you need to go back on your phone, unlock it if it lock automatically and then click on "TRUST" and then you can now see the images..
BUT the problem here is that your iPhone can't be detected on iTunes...
now, if you want to go back to where your phone can be detected on itunes, just follow these steps:
click on apple mobile device USB driver, click on Next and then wait for your computer to finish the installation and then you will hear the beeping sound. check your phone, unlock it, then click on "TRUST", and then go to iTunes and you will now see your iPhone there but not on your PC where you can browse for the images..
SEE HOW THIS DRIVERS are so ****** up.. i wish i hadn't started using this ****** UP OS with all the BUGS and GLITCHES.. JEEEZ! and to think, these DEVICES are not CHEAP compared to Android devices on the market.. it's just because of how these people go with the trend that they purchase these kind of stuff and the only thing they use it for is calling or texting.. i, for once use this not for calling or texting but also for the apps that it has like the games, ebooks and etc when im bored..
i HOPE the Apple DEVS read this and find the solution on the drivers which is so ****** UP and so LAME!!
PS: i hope a lot of people who are having the same issue as what i had find this and help them with their concern even though this is not a permanent solution.. it is just a work around for folks that are looking for answers and solution.
Have a Great Day Folks and it is the start of a New Year and want to contribute something even though i don't usually posts my work around.

Randomly when I plug my Iphone 4s into Itunes it will tell me that it can't detect my phone and that I need to restore it. It doesn't happen every time, but maybe every two weeks.I restore it and then it works for a while, but then a couple weeks later I'll plug it in and I get the same message again. It's very frustrating because even though I have all the settings to save to cloud, my apps and data don't all come back.

Thank you both. I suppose I should have prefaced my question with the concern that I've read a number of other posts from people who have had a similar issue and when they tried to follow the directions, they ran into a multitude of other problems. As you might imagine, I'm hoping to avoid the creation of new problems as I try to solve this one. Thanks again.

  • My Macbook Pro can't detect or read my CDFS file system external HDD

My Macbook Pro can't detect or read my CDFS file system external HDD

Open Disk Utility and see if the USB drives show in there. If they don't then it is a USB port or bus problem. If they do show in disk utility are they formatted in either Mac extended or a Windows format?

  • How can I detect a dialog and respond?

I'm having trouble doing something that's probably not that hard. I'm trying to "Print to PDF" a bunch of old AppleWorks documents. When you open a document created in AppleWorks v6 it opens right up, but when you open a document created in AppleWorks 5 you get a dialog box that says, "This document was created by a previous version of AppleWorks. A copy will be opened and "[v6.0]" will be added to the filename."
Right now I open the file and then:
    tell application "AppleWorks 6"
            activate
repeat while not (exists front document)
                    delay .2
            end repeat
    end tell
When the dialog box pops up, there's no front document so the whole thing freezes until you hit OK. How can I detect this dialog box and dismiss it?
    Thanks
    PS
When the box is open I ran this and got this result:
/usr/bin/osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get properties of windows of application process "AppleWorks 6"'

    Hi,
The simplest would be to set the application preferences in the script.
    Like this :
    -- *** set prefs ****
    tell application "AppleWorks 6"
          activate
          set oldPrefs to its preferences
          copy oldPrefs to tPrefs
          tell tPrefs
set old version warning to false --doesn't show the old version warning alert
set converted file suffix to true -- append “[v6.0]” to documents converted from older formats
set locked file warning to false
set paint reduction warning to false
          end tell
          set preferences to tPrefs
    end tell
    -- *** end set prefs ****
    --**** your script, example ***
set tfiles to choose file with multiple selections allowed
    tell application "AppleWorks 6"
          repeat with i in tfiles
                open i
                tell front document
                      -- do something
                end tell
          end repeat
    end tell
    --**** end  your script ***
    -- *** reset prefs ****
tell application "AppleWorks 6" to set preferences to oldPrefs
