Can (or How Does) "Organize by conversations" cause Beach Balls of Death?

Ok, I will be upfront here... This is driving me MAD!
I have been using Mac for over 10 years now (since OS 9) and this is the FIRST time that I have ever seen these types of problems.
Mail is hanging all the time and causing all sorts of jams.
THE CURRENT PROBLEM
I say "current" because I have fixed some of the problems I was having before this current one showed up (which I will explain later).
As for the current problem, it is this:
Everytime I select an email "conversation" that has an attachment in the thread (conversation) I get a beach ball that takes about 15 seconds to go away. I am not able to do anything in Mail once this happens. I just have to wait for the ball to go away and for the conversation to be accessible. Just for the record, I also have "Show Related Messages" turned on as well (so that I can see my "Sent" messages in the conversation as well).
What I have done so far...
1.) Vaccumed the Envelope Index file in the Terminal with: sqlite3 ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope\ Index vacuum;
This lead to a decrease in the size of the Index file and did make a noticable overall improvement in Mail.
2.) After that, I tried actually removing the following files from the User Library --> Mail folder: “DefaultCounts”, “Envelope Index” and “LSMMap”.
Again, this clearly lead to improvements, but I am still having the "Conversations with an attachment present" problem. The beach ball appears, and I just wait and wait and wait... Very frustrating when someone is asking for information and you are just sitting there like an idiot.
Need to get back to work here!
Anyone???

Update:
Interesting! It is not all Conversations that have attachments that are the problem, only certain ones. Can't figure out what the issue is. But the beach ball still appears and I am stuck whenever I click on those particular email Conversations.
The unique characteristic of the problematic Conversation is that it has two attachments in the Conversation: one PDF file in one email, and a .ics calendar file in another email in the Conversation.
That is all I can say...

  • Spinning Beach Ball of Death... any way how to stop a process under 10.4.9?

I remember the days when one could reliable and quickly interrupt any process that hung or took longer than expected by pressing “Command + .”. Since upgrading to MacOS 10.4.9 I experience mainly under Safari and other apps many instances where my Powerbook G4 simply hangs and processes a task for what seems to be an eternity. For no apparent reason. Pressing “Command + .” doesn’t do anything nor does “Command + Option + Escape” (how could it when the system is not responding) and usually I decide just to hold the on button down to force my Powerbook into action. Not healthy, I know, but we need to get in with our work. So, my question is: is there any other way to stop the spinning beach ball of death and interrupt a process?

You could launch the Activity Monitor, set it for all processes, and see what might be hanging up. In that app, you can select the hanger, click Quit Process, and either Quit or Force Quit it. That said, however, it appears you have major system problems which need attending to. First backup your machine to an external HD. I suggest a bootable backup/clone, using Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc. Then, boot with the install disk and run Disk Utility, repairing the disk and permissioins, and the Apple Hardware Test using the extended tests. If the disk passes those, boot back into the machine and see if the SBBOD problem's gone. If not, create a new admin user account, log into it, and check again. If gone, your original accounts corrupted—long an painful process to rectify. If not, then reinstall the latest COMBO update. If that doesn't fix things, then an Archive & Install, saving user and network settings, installation is in order.

  • I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it

I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it it gives me a message saying "Creative Cloud is not open anymore" help!

Since you didn't include any pertinent info such as the Mac model and OS version you are running, here is some general information:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
Depending on which OS yours came with originally - and which OS you are now running - you would either need your original install disks - you can call Apple for replacements by giving them your serial number. Or you may be able to reinstall the OS by using recovery (again, depends on which model/which OS).

  • What causes Beach Ball

At times when opening an app or loading I get the spinning beach ball as if something is loading and taking a while is that normal? I guess I remember when something was being opened or whatever you'd get a tiny ball with an arrow going around. I'm just not use to the Beach Ball so much. Usually after a while it goes away. Noticed it in i photo etc. Is there a fix

There are basically three conditions under which this happens. One is when the processor is handling a lot of processes at the same time and whatever you're trying to do at that moment has to wait it's turn before the processor can get to it.
A second condition that will cause this is when system memory is at or near capacity and the system has to do disk caching to simulate additional RAM. When the processor has to use disk caching to compensate for insufficient RAM it can really slow things down.
A third condition is when a program crash corrupts too much memory or throws a process into an infinite loop that maxes out the CPU's processing capability and requires a reboot. This is where the term "Spinning Beach Ball of Death" comes from.
Basically, the more processing power and memory you have, the less likely you are to get the spinning beach ball.

  • I've noticed my browser in FCP causes "Spinning Beach Ball of Death?!"

Ok, here's the thing, ever since I purchased my system, I have always had this problem, I ignore it for the most part, but its really annoying. When you have an Open FCP project and when you scroll through the browser window in order to view certain statistical data like Video Rate, Frame Rate, etc. Sometimes it will take upwards of 5 or ten minutes to respond. It always stops and shows me the spinning beach ball of death, can anyone explain this to me.
    Thanks
    J.

And what kind of footage are you working with and how large is your project file?

  • IPhoto does not start - spinning beach ball of death

    Hi
When I try to start iPhoto I get the spinning beach ball of death and the whole laptop freezes.
Cannot force quit, have to restart via power button.
I have tried starting iPhoto while holding the Option key - no difference.
    Jenn

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the *command and option (or alt) keys* while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards

  • M2v file causes Spinning Beach Ball of Death? How do you use Video???

I used FCP to mark a silent video and sent it to Compressor. I was going to use Soundtrack Pro to add some sound to the track for DVD. Every time I try to drag an m2v file over, I just get a spinning beach ball and if it loads at all, it takes about a minute or two before I regain control over the program. The m2v file is 500 megs. The problem now is if I try to scrub the video, every time I do, I get the spinning ball again. I've had to force quit a few times.
I've got over 5 megs of RAM, but I'm on a G5 dual processor 2.5 ghz, not an intel.
I'm wondering if I am trying to do something in a way I should not, or if there is a problem with StPro. I have the latest updates to the Studio. I'm on Tiger 10.4.11
Also, I cannot see the markers from the compressor file, while they are visible in DVD Pro.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

I am referring specifically to the type of compression used in the .mov file. MPEG-2, Sorenson, H.264, DV, etc., are all types of codecs used to compress the picture in a QuickTime movie.
Some are easier to work with than others.
I'm not sure how you produced the .m2v file, that is usually a format with MPEG-2 video. Could it be you just got it from a DVD?
When you export the picture from FCP choose a different output format. Make a QuickTime movie and choose a hi-quality intermediate codec like DV.

  • Can't seem to get rid of Spinning Beach Ball in Mail

As someone else put it... it seems that Yosemite is Apple's VISTA.  Mail is fast becoming my most annoying App because clicking on almost any email seems to send the signal for the Spinning Beach Ball to appear.  Looking at activity monitor, it says that Mail is Not Responding, and then after a minute or two, the email finally opens.
I'm thinking that perhaps Apple isn't testing Yosemite on older iMacs like mine, a circa 2007 (?) iMac7,1 identifier currently trying to run Yosemite OS X v.10.10.1 on my Intel 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo running 6 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.  Mail is one issue, I'm also seeing Multiple IP Address issues.  I'm trying to purge EMAils especially those that have images in them... figure I'll part the images on a USB HDD, and delete all those actual emails.  Even that is tough because the minute I highlight
Is there any fix for the spinning beach ball issue?
    Mike

OK, here's my current Etrecheck.  Maybe somebody can decipher this and give me a clue on how to resolve my problems.  I should not that I no longer have Elgato's EyeTV but I'm unsure about the correct method used to remove software like this, especially if there's no uninstall program that completely removes any references to it.  I did run the activity monitor and it seems like Kernel Task (?) is at the top of the list (Shows 541.1MB now) all the time when I select the MEMORY column.  There's 6.0 GB installed, 5.96 GB Used, Virtual Memory 6.28 GB, Swap Used is 59.5 MB, App Memory 4.33 GB, File Cache is 910.4 MB, Wired Memory 666.9 MB, and compressed is 96.8MB.

  • Is it just me, or does mountain lion have more beach balls, longer boot time, and other unexplained weirdness that clears up with a reboot?

I'm having mixed feelings about Mountain Lion.  On the one hand, I like some of the features that more closely integrate with my iWhatever.  I appreciate having the notes, reminders, imessage, etc that makes it so I can switch from a mobile device to desktop device.
But on the other hand, I see far more beach balls, such as when simply starting Safari.  Applications take a long time to initialize as they try to, I'm guessing, sync with iCloud.   I get more application hangs.  You know, the ones that leave you dead in the water until you reboot, but then mysteriously vanish for weeks.  and boot time is frustrating.  I spend far more time waiting for my desktop and applications to initialize and stabilize after a login.
Granted, much of my frustration here is not based in the technical.  It's based on "user experience" where I don't normally pay attention when it's working well. It just feels to me that the behaviour of ML is much more similar to windows of the past, where a reboot once or twice a day cured most ills.
Is it just me or does anyone else have similar feelings of disappointment.
    thanks!

Hmmmmm... OK y'all have got me thinking.
I normally run disk check and repair, this time it found a number of files and links related to printers and image devices, stuff that isn't likely part of the issue.  There were three links, however, related to core graphics.  the permissionss were  rwxr-xr-x when they should be rwxrwxrwx.  I don't think those are involved, but alas they are fixed.
It seems like much of my issues seems to revolve around the mounting/access of resources outside my laptop, be it icloud, nfs server, samba server, etc. RIght at this moment, Finder is hung hard.  I tried to force restart it, and in the Force quit menu I now see two Finders.  One will kill and restart immediately, one does nothing.   And I can't open a finder window period.
In fact, just before writing this, I was attempting to edit a text document in StarOffice, and StarOffice went to lunch trying to access my samba share.  Now before y'all go nuts about any samba server side issues, let me say that while my MBP is having issues accessing my samba shares, none of my other computing devices are.  W7 laptop pulls up samba file system as fast as if not faster than it's own local file systems.  My other MBP (older core2 duo, but still on mountain lion) does not seem to have any issues.  I don't believe it a server side issue.
So I asked myself, what's different on my 2.66 gb i7 MBP??  It just occurred to me that I have one piece of software that's pretty deeply rooted in file system management....   Tuxera NFS.   I see that it has not been updated since updating to Mountain Lion, so I am going to check that out, and will post results.

  • How to stop the endless spinning beach ball??

What am I supposed to do when something has obviously gone wrong & the beach ball is spinning round endlesly? In Windows you could just hit Control-Alt-Delete - is there nothing similar on a Mac?? I cannot close anything off or make it stop; if I force shut down, when I switch on again it is still there spinning round... Jeez, and people used to complain about the egg timer in Windows; this is 100 times worse; there seems to be no controls or anything to shut things off in this stupid Mac...?

In Windows you could just hit Control-Alt-Delete - is there nothing similar on a Mac??

  • How does Organizer differ from Bridge

I used to use PSE6 until it got lost in a HD crash.  I just downloads PSE9 trial and see that it has something called Organizer rather than Bridge.  I've tried importing all of my photos into Organizer, but am unsure about what this is supposed to accomplish.
I notice that Organizer didn't appear to import any of the categories and sub-categories that I had set up in Bridge, but perhaps I did something wrong.
Anyway, "importing" organizer felt a lot like importing into IPhoto, which is something I tried a while ago but rejected because I couldn't get anyone to explain how I could maintain my master file outside of the iPhoto repository.  I want to keep the files that I edit in separate files because I have going on 100 gig of them and want to be able to back them up rationally, which is not something I could figure out how to do with a 100gig iPhoto repository file.
Bridge just worked with the files, which was very good, except for searching for keywords across the entire set of photos.
I was hoping that Organizer would keep a central repository of metadata but let me edit with the original files.
So, is that how it works?
Two other points/questions:  1)  The Bridge UI would could be set up to display a nice big image of the file that I had selected.  That is, small versions of the images were displayed on the left, while the chosen image was displayed in a much larger form at the upper right.  Can Organizer do this?  I haven't found any way to get it to do this.  2)  I've recently tried to download a batch of new photos onto my HD into their new timestamped directories.  I had to tell Organizer to import the new directories (which is fine), but Organizer would start into a never-ending stream of thumbnail generation, preventing me from doing anything else.  I can't see how this can be expected, as it makes the software utterly unusable.  What am I doint wrong?
    Thanks,  --sw

Persona is a login authentication service. It is something a website has to implement. It is totally different than lastpass, which is simply a password storage service.
Are you talking about Sync maybe? Sync is a way for you to store and synchronize your Firefox data (including but not limited to passwords) across multiple devices. [[How do I set up Firefox Sync?]] In that respect it is equivalent to lastpass.

  • How does in ADC conversion actually accomplished?

I am interested in ADC/DAC conversions.  How do they actually work?  I am working with LabVIEW doing interfacing but I don't understand the principles behind the interfacing and the ADC conversions.

  • Photoshop Elements 10 organizer inoperable see Apple beach ball

    Hello people,
Problem with PS10 organizer, it doesn't work. I see the Apple beachball rolling. I'm running 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion) on my iMac, current on updates. Using iPhoto 11, current on updates. I've been using my PS8 to do my work, and saving it to another file, then dragging it to iPhoto to share it.  I was dragging my editing photowork to PS10, but it won't allow it any longer. PS10 and PS8 crash every time I close them.  Tried uninstalling and reinstalling and didn't help.

Go to your username>library>preferences and delete:
    com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 paths
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 settings
