Can Oracle Express 10g be set up so a database is accessible without acct?

I have a test database set up on one Windows Virtual PC and apps that need to connect to it on another.
I can see the database from the app VPC fine through sqldeveloper, but I need to log in with a username and password (which I can't seem to set to blank).
This is a local test environment that has no external access, so I'm not concerned about security. Is it possible to make the database visible without a user account at all? Or is there a way to set a blank password?

For 1z0-052 the situation is different. Oracle 10g express edition hides some of the administration tasks ... you really need to be using 11g.
If you dont waht Oracle 11g all over your regular machine then I would typically recommend install Oracle Enterprise Linux either on a spare machine with a dual core or HT processor and with 2GB or more of memory (eg Dell gx280 or better); or using a virtualisation solution on your current machine (ram would need to be 3GB or higher) (eg virtualbox or whatever ... though windows as a guest can have a license issue).

Where to locate HTTP Server for use with Oracle Express 10g and Apex?

Im a newbie and I downloaded oracle express 10g and Apex 3.2.1. The Apex install is referencing "choosing a HTTP Server" specifically "Oracle HTTP Server and mod_plsql and the embedded PL/SQL Gateway". My question is do the HTTP server or PL SQL embedded Gateway come with the 10g install or do I need to download them seperately? If so where can I locate them?

Corrupt Data1.cab in Oracle Express 10g Universal for Windows

Hello Oracle Folks,
I downloaded several times Oracle Express 10g Universal for Windows (OracleXEUniv.exe) and tried to install it and I get every time the same error message: "Error 1335. The required file "Data1.cab" is corrupt and cannot be used ...". When I download the Western European Edition (OracleXE.exe) the installation works! I downloaded the file on different local disks to exclude the risk that my disk is damaged.
Can you please check if this download is sane!

The stupid installation program for your stupid database was supposed to check the version of the Operating System. Anyway how does the operating system version matter if a cab file is corrupted? which was incidently packed in that stupid download link which you have happily given to all customers all this time. I was hoping to find that since you guys are too lazy to make the installation file properly you might have atleast bothered to put up a download link for that stupid Data1.cab. But nooo... The 'stupid installation program' is indeed that - a stupid installation program. It does a certain amount of checking, but definitely not enough. In that I do agree with you. It was also released too early - basrely understands how to spell Vista.
Also, there is an assumption by Oracle that the person downloading reads the documentation, especially the installation guide, that is available at the same location as the download. It is amazing and extremely disappointing to note how many people will not even attempt to look at the link.
The real sad part for me is that I frequently download software (and did again in this case) to verify that the user has a legitimate complaint. The 'data1.cab' that I received was not corrupt. Therefore I conclude the original poster made some huge assumption that is likely invalid. Now, I did install into an XP machine, and that could make a difference.
As for the 'you guys' statement - perhaps you should take that up with Oracle or an Oracle employee. Directing at me is an unsubstantiated assumption on your part. <g>

Yup. You could easily go there. Shows yet another assumption. (In fact, my company is centered around Linux and Oracle. And I have made a conscious decision, based on 3 decades of experience, to toss MySQL and stick with Oracle. And now that Sun, which owns MySQL, seems to be on the auction block, the future of MySQL is definitely up in the air.)
However, given how many assumptions you make and how valid they are, you may find it easier to stick with MySQL. Oracle Express edition potentially could save huge buckets of time and effort in the long run, but it does require reading, research and other skills to get up to speed.
Now, as to your problem
1) This is not the forum to discuss issues with installation. (If the problem is traced to the download source, then this is the right spot.)
2) There is a dedicated forum for Oracle Database 10g Release 2 Express Edition (Oracle Database Express Edition (XE)
3) You are absolutely correct that the installer should be smart enough to check the OS. It does not.
4) Since it does not, and since there are differences, knowing which version AND edition of Windows (or which Linux distro and release) is critical to troubleshooting.

Oracle Express 10g - a way to terminate in SQL Command Line interface

I've downloaded Oracle Express 10g and use the SQL Command Line interface to execute SQL*Plus -- a really simple window / interface without hardly any smarts. In other Oracle installations' SQL*Plus, I'm used to be able to do a Ctrl C to terminate the current SQL that's being executed and the session is still active and I can keep using it. But with the Oracle Express 10g SQL Command Line interface, when I do a Ctrl C the currrent SQL is terminated -- but so is the whole dang session and the window goes away too. There must be a way in the Oracle Express 10g SQL Command Line interface to simply terminate th current SQL results without losing the whole dang session!!! This is so incredibly frustrating it's not even funny. HELP!!!!

Oracle Express 10G Vulnerability Report

It is my understanding that Oracle Express 10G (10.2.0.2) release 2 does not have security patches released. The plan is to release another version (11g) when available. Is this correct?
Is there any report that states Oracle Express 10G edition is vulnerable\not vulnerable to known security exploits? I have found very little information. What I have found is basically "Vulnerabilities may affect Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (XE). According to Oracle, Oracle Database XE is based on the Oracle Database 10g Release 2 code".
What is Oracle's stance on security patches for Oracle Express? I imagine it states "if you're concerned there is an Enterprise edition that can be purchased with regular security patches".

Oracle Express 10g - cannot install on Windows 2003

I'm trying to install Oracle Express 10g on Windows 2003. On this machine already works MS SQL2005 server.
The installation starts ok but after copying files installer disappears whitout any message (in that moment an icon on desktop should be created, but it's not) All files copied first by installer are deleted upon it finishes it's work. From the same package I installed Express on Windows XP and then there was everything ok.
I checked install log but it didn't tell me much. It looks more or less the same as the log file from succesful installation until bolded line:
MSI (s) (30:A4) [15:02:44:281]: User policy value 'DisableRollback' is 0
MSI (s) (30:A4) [15:02:44:281]: Machine policy value 'DisableRollback' is 0
Action ended 15:02:44: InstallFinalize. Return value 2.
On successful installation the return value is 1. But it doesn't tell me anything. Also in event logs I got only mssinstaller information (event 11708)
Product: Oracle Database 10g Express Edition -- Installation operation failed.
Do anyone experienced such problem?

I have Oracle Express 10g installed on my pc, and some work servers and am getting some errors about memory issues and came across this message and decided to try the solution here too - Re: Attempted to read or write protected memory
I have the 10.2.0.1 driver on the clients I am running and the app has 10.2.0.4 (I think) and so decided that updating the clients drivers might solve the problems as described in that thread.
I have downloaded the instant client basic and odbc for windows x32 but am unsure what I need to do next as I have Oracle Express installed. I couldnt find one specifically for Express 10g.
Do I have the correct drivers downloaded and how do I install them into odbc ?

My understanding is that to be a MetaLink subscriber you have to be an Oracle customer or subscribe for Oracle support services. Since Oracle is only one of the many databases we support, and because our sole objective with Oracle is compatibility testing, it's unlikely that we will become subscribers unless it's essentially free.
Oracle is tangential (not core) to our own offerings, so we don't have a pressing need for support. Is there some avenue for people in our shoes?

ORA-00904 Oracle express 10g

I've downloaded oracle express 10g and am trying to learn application builder. When I build a new application the database used on the last tab gets a ORA-00904. If I drop the table and recreate it the problem goes away until I try to build another application. I suspect this is a bug rather than a feature. Any Ideas anyone

OPS$ Account on Oracle Express 10g on Linux

I have the exact same setup for an identical OPS$ account on an Oracle Standard Edition 10g database (running on Linux) and it works perfectly when logging in as
sqlplus /
However, the same setup does not work for the same OPS$ account on Oracle Express 10g. I have seen previous postings about OPS$ accounts that worked with Linux but not Windows XP (with the solution posted) but I seem to be having a problem getting Linux to work. I am running Redhat Linux Enterprise Edition 4.0.

To have OPS$ account on XE you need to put user you using in ORA_DBA user group.

Which Developer Tools for Oracle Express 10g?

I'm new to the area of developing .NET apps with Oracle. Till now 'Ive downloaded the Oracle Express 10g Edition and installed it.
Now I want to install the Developer tools for .NET and I am not sure which one to install. I've seen that currently there are several downloads
- Oracle 11g ODAC 11.1.0.6.21 with Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio
- Oracle 11g ODAC 11.1.0.6.21 with Xcopy Deployment
- Oracle 11g ODAC 11.1.0.6.21
- Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET with Oracle 10g Release 2 ODAC 10.2.0.2.21
- Oracle 10g Release 2 ODAC 10.2.0.2.21
- Oracle 10g ODAC 10.1.0.4.0
- Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET 10.1.0.4
Which of those should I use? Will the latest version (11.1.0.6.21) work with the 10g Express Edition? Or should I install one of the others?
I've got installed both VS 2005 Prof and VS 2008 Prof SP1 on my machine.

In addition to Niel's comments, if you plan to use Time Machine to backup a Mac to the secondary drive.....that application needs a drive that has been specifically formattted for Mac. That would be Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
PCs can also read and write to the Mac formatted drive.

We currently have our applications running on Oracle 10g AS 10.1.2.0.0. I was going through the hassle of installing the patchsets to get it up to 10.1.4.
I went to this page: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/ias/portal/html/upg_1014_1012_intro.html#UpgradeSteps. This document says that an upgrade is supported. For me, since I'm running on 10.1.2.0.0, its harder since I have to get it to 10.1.2.0.2.
From the doc:
If running OracleAS Portal 10.1.2.0.0 or 10.1.2.0.1 then apply the Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.1.0) patchset to bring the OracleAS Portal repository version to 10.1.2.0.2 before applying the OracleAS Portal 10g Release 2 (10.1.4) upgrade
However, the Doc 329361.1 says:
Oracle AS 10g 10.1.2.1.0 Patchset should be applied only on 10.1.2.0.0 or 10.1.2.0.1 Oracle Homes, which will bring them on par with 10.1.2.0.2 bug fixes. However, the patchset will not add any new functionality that 10.1.2.0.2 contains. The Database Patchset 10.1.0.4.2 is a minimal requirement on Metadata Repository homes before applying 10.1.2.1 Patchset, and is included with the patch download.
And Doc 339992.1 it says:
While you cannot upgrade or expand your existing Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.0) installations to 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.2), you can install a 10.1.2.0.2 middle tiers against an existing 10.1.2.0.0 Infrastructure. Once a new 10.1.2.0.2 middle tier is installed it can be configured to serve as a replacement for the original 10.1.2.0.0 one, allowing the older middle tier to be decommissioned.
So is this the only way I can upgrade my 10.1.2.0.0? Of course I mean with the functionality of that version.

So I understand that we can get all the (portal) functionality of Portal 10.1.4 by upgrading the application server from 10.1.2.0.0 to 10.1.2.1.0. But I'm curious what is the application server functionality that one gets with 10.1.2.0.2 and not with 10.1.2.1.0? Is it (just) Reports, Forms and Bi Beans?
I'd love a link to someplace that states this explicitly.
