Can Oracle Files replace file server ?

We are facing backup problem and survey for new solution to replace our file server.
Our file server now has ~ 1000Million files /30TB
and daily upload ~ 6Million files
Can anybody tell wether OCS can handle this kind of loading or not?

I guess you could use Content Service (former Oracle Files) for that but in version 10g there is no support for NFS or SMB. Access is now limited to WebDAV and FTP.
I should look for a archiving product instead like DiskXtender from EMC: http://www.legato.com/products/diskxtender/index.htm but I think Oracle themself store 18TB in Oracle Files.

  • Oracle Files Customization?

Can Oracle Files be customized with the Oracle Content Management SDK? Specifically I need Oracle Files to work with Oracle Label Security. I also want to drive searching according to document classification level and user classification, show documents they can see, but only showing thematic info for documents they are not cleared for.

Although Oracle Files is built on CM SDK - we do not support utilizing the CM SDK API against Files.
Oracle Files has a special FMI Layer that all operations against it work through. By using the CM SDK API you bypass this layer - plus the business logic etc.
You may want to take a look at using the CM SDK Web Starter Application as a basis for building your own application. CM SDK exposes a much finer grained access control. In particular it distinguishes between obtaining a document's content, versus its attributes / categories etc.
Even though you may be able to locate a document based on some metadata, you may not have sufficient privileges to view its content.

  • File Server Migration from 2008 Standard to 2012 Standard accross different subnet

    Hi
Im going to migrate File server from Windows 2008 Standard server to Windows 2012 Standard . Source and Destination Servers are on different subnets . According to this
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj863566.aspx I cannot use Server migrations tool in-built into 2012 .  Im not sure if I can use file server migration toolkit 1.2?.
Also my Domain controllers are mixture of Windows 2003, 2008 , 2008 R2 and I've upgraded the schema level to 2012 R2 . Is there anything else I need to be aware of ?
Can anyone please recommended best way to go about doing this migration . Is file server migration toolkit 1.2 is compatible ?  .
Only reason I don't want to use Robocopy to this is because If I miss a small setting etc then I will face unwanted downtime.
I presume Migration toolkit will also create all the Quotas etc on the destination server .
    Thanks
    mumtaz

    Hi mumtaz,
We could use file server migration toolkit 1.2 to migrate file server between the two subnets. In order to maintain security settings after the migration, please ensure the security of files and folders after they are migrated to a target file server, the File
Server Migration Wizard applies permissions that are the same as or more restrictive than they were on the source files and folders, depending on the option you select.
In the meantime, quota cannot migrate by this tool but we can export and import the quota using dirquota command. Export the templates as xml and then import to new server:
    dirquota template export /file:C:\test.xml
    dirquota template import /file:C:\test.xml
For more detailed information, please see:
    Template Export and Import Scenarios

  • How can I turn my old macbook into a file server

So I have an old macbook from 2007. I don't believe it can run yosemite or mavericks, so i'm stuck with lion at the moment. I wanna be able to leave it running as a server so when I go away I can access files from it. Basically I wanna use it as my own cloud server. I use this program called plex from the itunes store which works great as a media server, but I wanna make even more use of the thing. It's such a great computer still even after all these years. Is there any (preferably free) way I can accomplish this safely? I'd like to be able to have some sort of authentication too so no one else can get into the server without a passcode or something.

You may also wish to check into the availability of a Server version of Lion OS X 10.7.5
or if the computer you have shipped with Snow Leopard 10.6, there should be one still
available from the Apple store or online main store's operating system specialists...
You'd need to check on availability or ask to talk to someone about it. The main Apple
page store phone number should be able to direct you to an OS Specialist.
The Snow Leopard version was better for some users with old hardware since it was
available on DVDs and so a Server setup could be maintained or backups made
ahead of need (extra backup clones or replacement pre-installed or RAID array) to
continue use of a computer 24/7 as a Server. As such, the setup would be different
than with a basic computer sharing files locally; a wireless Time Capsule or other
wi-fi network may be utilized to share an internet connection and files between a
group of authorized computers or supported devices. An older OS X may not be able
to support newer iDevices, so the specifications of those may need to be checked into.
For some, the use of a Mini Mac that can be set up without a display as a server, once
it is running, is a minimalist situation. There should be several archives of Support info
on how to do all of these kinds of things in the Apple Support online database.
The suggestion above is a good start on a feel of basic settings to configure a shared
server; the actual software version for Servers covers more to a higher level of use.
And it may not be necessary for a home network.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do I get Oracle Text to index files on a file server?

I am new to Oracle (I'm a MS-SQL DBA looking for a Full-Text Search solution that is better than linking to a MS index server.)
    So - Here's the objective:
I have Oracle Server(Express) installed on a Windows server.
I would like for Oracle to build a Full-Text Catalog of the files on a separate file server based on file paths in a table in the database.
(No desire to store terabytes of images and documents inside the database)
I can get Oracle text up and running, using the URL_Datastore:
    CREATE TABLE files (id NUMBER PRIMARY KEY, issue_id NUMBER, path VARCHAR(255) UNIQUE, ot_format VARCHAR(6), ot_version VARCHAR(10));
The Compaq server is a remote windows server on my local workgroup, so the fully qualified path is just "compaq" and the URL is valid:
    INSERT INTO files VALUES (9,9,'file://Compaq/FTQ/00000003.pdf',NULL,NULL);
    INSERT INTO files VALUES (13,13,'file://Compaq/FTQ/01.txt',NULL,NULL);
CREATE INDEX file_index ON files(path) INDEXTYPE IS ctxsys.context
    PARAMETERS ('datastore ctxsys.URL_DATASTORE format column ot_format');
    but when I enter:
Select * from CTX_User_Index_errors, I see the following errors:
DRG-11609: URL store: unable to open local file specified by file://Compaq/FTQ/00000003.pdf
DRG-11609: URL store: unable to open local file specified by file://Compaq/FTQ/01.txt
    Did I miss something?
Do I need to install anything on the file server?
I would like to convince my company that Oracle can be much quicker than Microsoft's Indexing Service because it can avoid joining two large result sets (one result set from Full_text (indexing service) and one for specific data contained in fields in the MS-SQL database.) Full Text Searches commonly take 40 - 60 seconds where there are 1.5 million multi-page PDF files for a particular set that I sample search on. Without this massive join, I believe I can get the search to run in under 10 seconds.

    Thank you!
    File_Datastore worked fine.
I was staying away from File_Datastore because the information I gathered from googling suggested that file_datastore would only work locally.
Now I just have to get Oracle to pull data out of tables in a MS-SQL database on the local network (don't have a clue yet), and then have it index compiled file paths.
Then MS-SQL can query Oracle with index and full-text criteria and Oracle can send back a result set
It may sound like a bad way of performing Full-Text Queries, but anything will be better than the way things are currently running. We are currently performing Full Text Searches on a table that is rebuilt nightly, so the table containing millions of file paths is not live..
It would be so much better if we just migrated to Oracle, but we currently do not have the resources.

There are a lot of dependencies involved. app severes before 10g are not generic j2ee server. what kind of files are you putting in ur war file?

  • Time Capsule as a File Server - to replace existing Airport Extreme

    Hi
I have a 4th Gen Airport Extreme connected to my cable modem.  I was thinking of getting a 2013 Time Capsule to replace my existing 4th Gen 2009 Airport Extreme, to use for Time Machine Backups and also for storing other files which I can access from anywhere only.
Is Time Capsule just a great wirelsss router and backup device or is it any good as a basic file server / nas drive.
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

Is Time Capsule just a great wirelsss router and backup device
    Yes, it is that.
is it any good as a basic file server / nas drive.
It is not a good NAS.. primary issue.. no internal backup. No way for the TC to back itself up.
No way for Time Machine to backup a network drive.
It still lacks any proper high speed connections for a second hard drive.. usb2 doesn't cut it.
The tools are poor.. actually almost non-existent. No partitioning.. so mixing backups and data is not a great idea.
    See Q3 Pondini. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Nothing has changed with this new one.
There are no media servers. no ftp, http, or any other access method for files such as is common to the basic NAS of the world.
To say nothing of rsync and all those kinds of things.
It is still slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. fine for data.. not so great for streaming media.
Remote access can be difficult if you cannot get the TC as the main router in the network.

  • Replace a 2003 (not R2) File Server with a 2012R2 files server and preferably keep the same machine name and IP when finished

I am wanting to replace a 2003 (not R2) File Server with a 2012R2 file server and preferably keep the same machine name and IP when finished.  For the moment I just need some "high level" guidance, little details can be worked out once I know
which direction I will go.  I was considering that DFS might be a way to help get through the process although when finished the 2012R2 Files server will be by itself with no other file server planned at this time.  DFS can stay installed for maybe
future purposes but clearly I wouldn't need the DFS Replication with only one machine.
Here's a few details of the environment....
    1.  DC's are 2012R2 but it is still 2003 DFL because the old 2003 DCs are still present.  But likely they will be gone and the DFL elevated before I start on the File Server project
    2. Nearly all machines in the facility have a shortcut on the "All Users" Desktop that points to the existing old File Server.  Editing or replacing that shortcut would be a major pain,...hence why I want to keep the same machine name at least,
and maybe the same IP if not too much trouble.  This way the existing shortcut would continue to work with the new 2012R2 File Server.  The UNC path represented in that shortcut is also configured into one or more of our major business applications,
futher emphasizing the need to keep the UNC path the same throughout the process.
    3. The facility runs 24/7/365 but is "light" on weekends.  The political environment is such that there is little to no tolerance for any down time at all.
    4. Would DFS (based from the 2012R2 machine) be a good tool to get where I need to go?
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Phillip Windell

    Hi Sharon,
I've done some more reading and have a few new ideas to run past you....
Yes regular DFS wouldn't help and the Namespace would still be different than how it was with just the old server. However I was thinking DFS Replication could replace the purpose of RoboCopy and it would keep the two locations "in sync" until I was ready
to flip over to the new server.  DFS Rep can exist independently of a DFS Namespace, so a Namespace is not even needed. It needs a minimum of 2003R2 for the "later & better" DFS Rep but I believe 2003 can do an "in place" upgrade to 2003R2, so I would upgrade
the old server to 2003R2 first.  As long as the DFS Rep on 2012R2 and 2003R2 will properly interact I think that will work.
Thanks for the reg info on the Shares.  I'm debating if editing that would reg file would really be much better than manually creating the Shares on the new server while the DFS Replication was doing its job.  I'll probably export that Key as a
safety move whether I use it or not.
Once the DFS Rep is fully in sync and the Shares are in place on the new server, I figure I would then:
    1. Remove the DFS Replication Object (optionally remove DFS Services completely)
    2. Rename the old File Server to something else and set it to DHCP
    3. Rename the new File Server to the name I want to use and give it the IP the old server had.
    How does that sound?

  • Oracle 11g on Unix server needs to write files (.csv) on Windows server

    Hi,
Currently we are using Oracle 10g which is installed on a Unix server and on the same server there is a directory under which some files are being exported/downloaded by the db.
We are having DEDICATED DB INSTANCE on the SHARED server, and not a DEDICATED SERVER.
Now we need to migrate from Oracle 10g to 11g, but due to some complaince issue, we have been asked to create those directories on some other server. We have identified a Windows server and can create directories.
Now I request any expert to pls suggest/guide me that how can the db (on Unix server) export/write files on another Windows server?
I read in a thread that the server (where files should be exported) should be MOUNTED on the server where db is physically installed.
    Pls help me here.....

As I wrote in my question that due to compliance issue we have been asked to create the directory (that is currently on the same unix server on which our db is physically installed) in any other server (no matter unix or windows). And if that remote server is not available? Or if network connectivity to the remote server fails? Or if there is severe network congestion between the Oracle server and remote server? What then?
How is the process on the local server suppose to deal with errors when it attempts to create a CSV file on the remote server? Or deal with network bottlenecks that results in severe performance degradation when trying to create a CSV file? Or if there lacks freespace for creating the CSV file?
What about security? How is the local Oracle server to authenticate itself with the remote server? How is the remote server to protect that directory share against unauthorised access?
How is this remote server going to provide access to authorised s/w to these CSV files?
Who (local or remote processes) is going to manage this directory share and ensure old CSV files are deleted and that there is sufficient freespace for new CSV files?
There are a LOT of questions that need to be asked... BEFORE deciding on HOW technically to do it. As the technical decision will be based on the functional requirements and how to best meet these.
Technically - there is Samba, NFS, FTP, SFTP, SCP, RDIST and a number of other methods that can be used. But without asking the above questions and getting proper business answers, selecting a specific technical method is very much premature.
You are asking the wrong questions, and in the wrong forum. You need to determine the business requirements first.

  • Can't register file server

    Hi
I have just managed to install OVM 3.0.2, I have only one server and one manager, my server have some free space I want to use to stora images, templates, etc. How do I add that as a file server?
When trying from Storage-Register File Server it fails. I'm probably doing something really stupid but I'm note sure where to look so if anyone could point me in the right direction I would be very happy.

I do have unmanaged space left on the OVS, it was installed using default values, however I can't see that space when I configure the server pool. You can't use the unused space on an already partitioned disk, i.e. if there is a single disk in your server, the entire disk is consumed by the Oracle VM operating system.
When selecting the magnifying glass next to "Location" in the wizard I have three options in the dropdown list: Unmanaged iSCSI, Unmanaged FibreChannel and Generic Local Storage Array @Diesel
No matter which one I choose there isn't anything in the big list, what am I doing wrong?Only completely unused, unpartitioned disks are presented as local storage. These will show up under the "Local Storage Array" when available.

  • Changed laptops, now iTunes can't find my music on my file server

Ok, here's what happened when I recently switched laptops
    - I use iTunes to point to the music I store on my file server via a network share (WinXP)
    - I manually manage my iTunes folders
    - I took the \My Documents\My Music\iTunes directory from my old laptop and copied it to the same location to my new laptop
    - Installed iTunes 9 on the new laptop
    - When iTunes9 loaded on the new laptop ALMOST all music files in my library loaded with an exclamation point indicating that it couldn't locate the file (even though the file locations never changed)
Ok... so here's the problem. I have over 20,000 songs with ratings information and if I just re-add all the files from the network share to the iTunes library again then it looks like I'd lose those ratings.
The only way that I can see to fix things is to individually point iTunes to the network share location of the file for each file... YUCK!
Is there a script or something I can write to tell it to find these files, or at least copy the ID3 tags to the duplicated songs that I re-added from the network share.
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Something is different in the paths to the files....hence itunes cannot find them.
Sound like you know about the ITL file, which is why you copied it over.
What you can do is look in its companion XML file to see the paths itunes thinks it should be using.
If your XML is really big, open it using WordPad instead of NotePad. About the 10th line down is the itunes preference setting for the itunes folder:
    key>Music Folder</key><string>file://localhost/K:/iTunes%20Music/</string>
On my system it's K:/iTunes Music
The %20 just indicates a space.
Then each song will have its own path
    <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/K:/iTunes%20Music/Cowboy%20Junkies/The%20Trinity%20Session/07%2 0200%20More%20Miles.mp3</string>
Now....can you see ANYTHING funny in one of those song paths? Is there an extra space, a different user name, anything different than what you could browse to in Windows Explorer?

  • How can I use Airport Extreme just as a file server - no wifi

I'm setting up a new Apple environment for an invalid music buff.  Here are the components, all newly purchased.
    MacBook Pro
    Airport Extreme
    Airport Express
I was handed a G-Drive with a large iTunes file collection on it.
The user will have Comcast as his network provider and he already has a Comcast wireless router, so none of the Apple devices will need to be used as a wireless router or base station (assuming I understand what Apple means by a "base station").
The Airport Express has the primary function of acting as an AirPlay device, feeding an analog music signal to the user's hi-end audio system (Denon integrated amplifier, Thiel Loudspeakers).
The Airport Extreme has the sole function of acting as a network file share for the G-Drive.
The MacBook Pro will operate iTunes and will get its music files from the network shared G-Drive and send it to the AirPlay device, which will feed the music signal to the hi-end audio system.
I am able to get the Airport Express to simply act as a wireless client on the Comcast provided wireless network.  The MacBook Pro is also on the network and can see the Airport Express as an AirPlay device and send music to the audio system.
What I'm having problems with is getting the Airport Extreme to simply act as a file server on this LAN.  It can either work in bridged mode and just be a wireless network client, or I can readily run an ethernet cable from the Airport Extreme to the Airport Express, or even to the Comcast router.
I tried to connect the MacBook Pro to the Airport Extreme with an ethernet cable and get it to "join an existing network", but it refused to recognize the Comcast provided network.  All it could see were some networks in homes nearby.
I was hoping that if I just ran a network cable between the Airport Extreme and the Airport Express, that it would just get a network address over DHCP through the Airport Express.  Nope.
So I'm stuck.   How do I get the Airport Express to simply act as a file server for the G-Drive on my LAN?

+Can I use the Airport Extreme base station as a wired router, with wireless disabled for the time being?+
Sure, but it will probably take just as much time...a few minutes....to turn the wireless off than simply change the name on the default wireless network to your personal choice.
The AirPort Extreme is pre-configured to create a wireless network when it is hooked up to a modem. All you need do is assign a name to this network and establish a password. If you don't want to do this, you can turn the wireless off and use the device as a wired only router.
AirPort Utility, the application that is used to setup the AirPort Extreme has a simple guided step by step process for you to configure the device the way you want.

  • How can I set-up my mac mini server to be a central file server for my windows boxes (they don't see the mac on the network), and how do I set-up a central iTunes server so that all my devices sync to the mac mini?

I am looking for step by step instructions to configure my mac mini server to support the following:
    1. Central itunes server for all my devices (ipad, ipod, iphone, etc.)
    2. Central file server so that my windows devices can save and retrieve data from the central system (the mac does not show up in the network for the windows systems - all running windows XP or 7)
    Thanks,
    Keith

You will need to enable file sharing in System Preferences
as well as setting up sharing and permissions for the
directories that you want shared.  You may also want to
setup a non-administrative user or allow limited guest
access.  The user would require entering a user name and
password to make the connection, but would allow remotes
to change files, if set up tat way.
As for serving iTunes media, better to post in the iTunes forum.

  • How can I make a file server sync with a laptop when it connectsSOLVED

Ok, first let me say that I looked on the Internet for this but didn't find what I was looking for. I'm going to be setting up a simple file server for my in laws soon...they use windows so I'll be using samba on the server side.
They have 3 computers and want to be able to have all there files stored in one central place so they can share them easily and also have them backed up at the same time. They have 2 desktops and one laptop.
The desktops are not a big deal to sync with the server because they are on all the time and I can just use a cron job or something. Then problem is the laptop..
What can I do to make the laptop automatically sync when it gets on the network?
The catch is this needs to be ran from the server side so they have a "hands free" experience or whatever. If you know a way for the laptop to do this in the background I guess that would work too.
I know this is probably a very simple task but so far everything I find the user would have to manually start the sync.
Thanks in advance for you help!

Is it necessary that all the files are on the local hard disks? In the case of the laptop I could understand this if the laptop is also used outside the network, but the desktops should stay in place, no?
It could be as easy as to make a shortcut on all the computers to the samba-share and tell the inlaws that they have to use the samba-share to store their (shared) files.
You are correct about this but I doubt they would remember to use this all the time so I want to sync the folders just in case.
Assuming the laptop is always going to be in the same IP address when it connects to the network (which is unlikely in default configurations), you could create a script that checks for the existence of the machine on the network then perform a sync.  I had a script written in Python somewhere that would check to make sure the server side was up and run unison, but it could be modified to check for the laptop and copy files.  Let me know if that's something you're interested in and I can post it for you.
This sounds like what I'm looking for. Also I wander If it could be done by NetBIOS  name instead of ip address? This way It wouldn't matter.
The script sounds like what I'm looking for though
    Thanks for the help!
