Can OS 10.2.1 software restore & install discs for iBook be used by others?

My wife's iBook died late last year and I eBayed all the components, including the software restore and install CDs (I made a net of about $200 from everything, after eBay fees, Paypal fees and shipping! But it was A LOT of work!).
The person who bought the software restore and install CDs wrote me today and said:I just find out after many tries to install this system that i got from you, that the reason it won't install is because this set of disk are propeitery, Meaning that after they were installed in your wiife's computer and registered with the apple corp. NO ONE ELSE CAN USED THEM. Meaning it belonged to that computer ONLY. Therefore I'm Requesting my money back. Let me know. --Al.
My questions are:
1) Is it true that the install CDs and restore CDs can only be used on the original computer?
2) If not true, what are the limits of which computers they will work on (i.e. only all iBooks? only the exact iBook that my wife had? Which Macs will they work for?).
Here is the link to the eBay auction, if that helps:

P.S. This question is cross-posted on the 10.3 and earlier forum.

As always, Ronda, you are the best with your information! I have e-mailed the buyer to get his/her system's specs to see if I can help solve his/her problem.
Apple's software license agreement does permit a one-time sale as follows (assuming I have the right info for this situation):You may, however, make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software to another party, provided that: (a) the transfer must include all of the Apple Software, including all its component parts, original media, printed materials and this License; (b) you do not retain any copies of the Apple Software, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (c) the party receiving the Apple Software reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of this License. NFR (Not for Resale) Copies: Notwithstanding other sections of this License, Apple Software labeled or otherwise provided to you on a promotional basis may only be used for demonstration, testing and evaluation purposes and may not be resold or transferred.
BTW: I recently went through a long effort to upgrade to Windows XP Home Edition on a computer at my church, using a valid Product Key from a Gateway computer that was being destroyed, literally. After long hours on the phone with both Microsoft and Gateway, I finally determined that their license (EULA) expires when the specific machine expires. It seems that Apple's license is more reasonable by allowing a transfer!

  • IMac G5 running OS 10.4.11. Started playing with a bluetooth speaker (may or may not be related). Now I cannot get past the blue screen on startup. I can get into safe mode. Tried install disc for disc utility and reloaded OS. Still get blue screen.

    I have an older iMac G5 running OS 10.4.11. The other day I started playing with a bluetooth speaker (may or may not be related). Now I cannot get past the blue screen on startup.
    I can get into safe mode. But no regular startup.
    I tried disabling bluetooth, thinking that might be related. It didn't help.
    I even tried using the install disc to run disc utility. That didn't work so I reloaded the OS.
    But I still get hung on the blue screen when trying a normal startup.
    All help would be appreciated.

    Try resetting the PMU/SMU and PRAM/NVRAM. You'd need to identify the mode of resetting depending on the model of your G5 iMac. The Apple support sites that would help you for this are –

  • Making a USB install disc for macbook air using a windows PC!

    Ok i have an iMac and a macbook air, so this guide here seems good for me right?
    How to Create a Mac Snow Leopard USB Installer Disk
    The problem I've got is that my iMac superdrive is skewed, it just won't read anything (disc is new etc but the drive won't work with pretty much ANY disc at all, and i mean any, just spits them out after a few seconds of trying to read it).
    Anyways, can this process as described in the URL above be done using a windows based pc? i also have one as a media centre in my room and it has a working dvd drive..... if so what do i need to do? this is driving me insane! i cannot afford an external superdrive or any other external drives at the moment nor is the iMac in warranty and nor do i have the ability to take it anywhere.

    Its a long one to explain but the superdrive in the imac works when it wants, and fortuantly last time it worked with the OSX disc that came with the imac! amazing, i made the usb installer and then when booted with macbook air it stated it cannot be installed. I did a little digging and discovered that it was because the imac came with one of those grey OEM discs and are not able to transpose to another machine at all, this is officially from apple and what others have used, hence my need to then get a full snow leopord disc.
    The disc however unlike the other OSX grey one will not read at all
    also what i mean is can i use the drive from the windows machine to make the usb install disc not using windows itself....?

  • Restore/Install Discs

    Thanks for looking at my question. I just bought an open box iMac 20" 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, from the mid 2007 production. The internet company I bought it from listed it as having Leopard installed, with discs. Of course with my luck it has Tiger installed and Tiger discs. I can get ahold of Restore/Install discs for an early 2008 iMac 20" 2.4 Ghz, with the specs: 2Z691-6204-A, AHT 3A131. Any idea if that would be incompatible with my computer?
    Thanks,
    J

    Those disks are incompatible with your machine. They can only install software onto an Early 2008 iMac.

    How can I create a new partition to install Windows 7 by not using Bootcamp?

    If you want to dualboot you have to use boot camp i think. I think you have already a full disc and cannot make another partition I'm I right?
    Your question seems a bit blurry so I'm giving you a general tip here.
    If you want to just try the beta you can always use Sun's "Virtualbox".

    You can directly install Mountain Lion 10.8.0 to 10.6.8, and then apply the 10.8.2 Update.

    Pagemaker is ancient, obsolete and unsupported. It was discontinued over 10 years ago. (Though why it is still sold is a mystery.)
    If you want to run PageMaker, your best bet is to use a Win2K or WinXP PC.
    Otherwise move to Indesign or look at Serif's PagePlus or Scribus.

  • Mac Pro Install disc for a Macbook Pro?

    Hi everyone,
    Just wondering if theoretically it would be possible to use the install discs for Leopard on a new Macbook Pro. Meaning that the disc says 'MAC PRO: Mac OS X ...." but would they still work alright on a late 2009 Macbook Pro?
    Thanks guys!

    Just wondering if theoretically it would be possible to use the install discs for Leopard on a new Macbook Pro.
    No. A Mac generally can't start up from an OS older than the one which shipped with it.

  • Will install discs for an iBook (mid 2005) work on an older model (late 2004) ?

    I have a nephew that got an old 1.2 GHz 30 GB iBook from a neighbor. It had OS X 10.4 on it, but was not running. I used some old discs from an eMac to fix the OS, but couldn't get any additional software to install. I want to get the newest install discs for this iBook (OSX 10.4.2 and iLife '06). I don't know if the discs will allow the install of the application software bundle to the older iBook. Does anyone know if it will work?

    The eMac disk does not have all the necessary software for an iBook. If you reinstall the Mac OSX 10.4.x from a retail disk then your problem should be solved.

  • Install discs for upgrade to OS X 10.3.9

    I currently have OS X 10.3.7 running on my MiniMac. However I need to upgrade to OS X 10.3.9 to enable connectivity to my recently purchased iPod Photo. My question is where can I locate an install disc for this upgrade (as the size of the Combo upgrade download is 117MB which is too large for a dial-up connection !)?
    Thanks

    Hi Mac and iPod, and Welcome to Discussions!
    If you take a blamk CD to an Apple Retail Store, they may let you download the Combo there, or might even do it for you.
    Some libraries, bookstores, & cafes offer high speed internet access as well.
    Or maybe a friend or relative with high speed?
    Good Luck!

  • How to specify different horizontal restore & collapse icon for af|panelSplitter using Skinning based on Style class or position?

    Hello,
    I am trying to provide different horizontal restore & collapse icon for af|panelSplitter using Skinning based on Style class or position. I have 2 af:panelSplitter with orientation="horizontal" - One with positionedFromEnd="true" one with positionedFromEnd="false". I want to specify the horizontal collapse and restore icon using Skinning. I want specify different icons based on positionedFromEnd. When I specify icons they are appearing for both splitters. I gave 2 different styleClass to these splitter but it is not taking them in account,
    JSPX Page -
    <af:panelSplitter orientation="horizontal" splitterPosition="196" positionedFromEnd="false" id="pnlSplitterLeft" collapsed="false" styleClass="panelSplitterLeftClass">

    </af:panelSplitter>
    CSS Skinn
    af|panelSplitter::horizontal-restore-icon {
        width: 10px;
        height: 55px ;
        content : url("/skins/AppSkin/Left_Open.gif");
    af|panelSplitter::horizontal-collapse-icon {
        width: 10px;
        height: 55px ;
        content : url("/skins/AppSkin/Left_Close.gif");
    af|panelSplitter.panelSplitterLeftClass::horizontal-restore-icon {
        width: 10px;
        height: 55px ;
        content : url("/skins/AppSkin/Left_Open.gif");
    af|panelSplitter.panelSplitterLeftClass::horizontal-collapse-icon {
        width: 10px;
        height: 55px ;
        content : url("/skins/AppSkin/Left_Close.gif");
    af|panelSplitter.panelSplitterRighClass::horizontal-restore-icon {
        width: 10px;
        height: 55px ;
        content : url("/skins/AppSkin/Right_Open.gif");
    af|panelSplitter.panelSplitterRighClass::horizontal-collapse-icon {
        width: 10px;
        height: 55px ;
        content : url("/skins/AppSkin/Right_Close.gif");
    It is always showing Left_Open.gif and Left_Close.gif for both splitters. But I want different image.
    How to specify different horizontal restore & collapse icon for af|panelSplitter using Skinning based on Style class or position?
    - Sujay

    CSS attribute selectors are what you are talking about, but binding the selector with EL is a more-common approach. Using selectors like this require you to ensure browser support.
    af|panelSplitter.panelSplitterRighClass::horizontal-collapse-icon [positionedFromEnd=true]

  • Software restore without discs

    I've got an iBook with combo drive - just bought another one off eBay that doesn't have combo drive and didn't come with any discs. I re-installed OSX with my old discs, but the new computer without the combo drive doesn't like the Restore Software discs!
    Is it possible to restore the software by downloading something? Or do I have to find the right restore software discs for this particular iBook?

    Laura, as you can see from this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1273637&#1273637
    some of us have the same problem even though we have our original software restore discs. Here's the solution i posted:
    Had the exact same problem, but found some instructions at
    http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-7355.html
    that helped:
    "You can get to all of the 'images' on a restore CD by mounting the CD, opening its main window, using the Finder's menu "Go to Folder..." and typing .images
    You can then mount any of the .dmg files to see their contents. Note: Some of the dmg files contain installers but most just contain the application as it would appear if it were installed and any library components, etc."
    What i did was to mount the OS9 General.dmg, then copy the "General OS 9 Content" folder to my hard drive. Open Classic System Preference pane, and tell it to use the System folder found within. I don't know if any of the other stuff in that folder is crucial, but i left it all there in case. Classic now starts up fine for me. HTH.

  • Where can i get new install discs for my macbook 2008 alluminum  model

    I seemed the misplaced my discs for my macbook early 2008 unibody (silver), i just got a new hd after my old one died and need to install the OS obviously. I was wondering where i would be able to acquire some discs? I have got my sisters discs from her macbook pro from late 2011, the OS version is 10.6.3 but they dont seem to want to install, i get an error before i can begin the install that says something along the lines of "not able to install this software on this macbook".
    Would i be able to buy the OSX snow lepoard disc from the apple website?and would that work perfectly or?
    Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
    edit: just looking at the model/build page and i found this:
    MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008)
    Oct 2008
    10.5.5
    10.5.6
    9F2088, 9F2533, 9G2133
    that is my model.

    Call Apple using the appropriate phone number on this page. They may make a small charge for the new disks.
    Best of luck.

  • How can I downgrade to Tiger after Leopard install on an iBook G4?

    I am getting rid of my old iBook G4 and want to downgrade to Tiger for the new owner. I have no files that I need on the iBook so I just need help doing a clean restore and install of 10.4. The problem is, when I boot off the install disk, I get a kernal error which include the words "panic" and "hanging". It fails to let me boot off of my 10.4 install discs (which are the original ones that came with the machine, not a copy).

    Use the one that came with the iBook. Does it have the Apple Hardware Test program on it? It might be a separate disk. If you have it, see if it'll boot the machine. If so, run the extended tests. One other thing you can try is reset the PRAM as detailed in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
