Can OS X server fulfill my needs?
i have tons of music and movies that i would like my friends and family to use/copy but I am unsure how to go about doing this. Can OS X server do some file sharing and provide basic security?
We actually don't use a whole lot of data on the server - with video there's a lot of data involved but it's generally stored locally on individual raided drives and backup drives. Working with probably less than 1TB of total data that will be connected directly to the server to be shared. So I'm looking at a 4TB RAID 0 drive to hook up to it.
Read a little about Rumpus. Are you suggesting it as an alternative to OS X Server or something to work in conjunction with it?
The most important thing is for us to be able to send out links to files on the server for clients to view, and also for clients to have the ability to upload to us. I'm assuming this can be accomplished via Filezilla or Cyberduck if we didn't want to invest in Rumpus? I'll have to do more research on that. Just don't want to present this option to my boss and drop the cash on it only for it to not end up serving our needs.

You don't need a server, you just need a web hosting package such as the ones from GoDaddy or many other hosts. You then send the web gallery directly from LR to your web space.
As you're asking such basic questions, it might be best if you read articles like this and see if a friend or colleague can get you started. -
My late 2009 iMac is running slow, particularly on Mail, more so since I upgraded to Yosemite. I have run an Etrecheck but it doesn't mean too much to me. If anyone can point me to what I need to do I'll be very grateful.

I've now installed the ad blocker, thrown away the unwanted files, and thrown away a copy of Firefox that Adware said had a problematic extension.
Things are better, but still slow.
Activity Monitor shows that with just Mail, Chrome and Excel running, 2.9GB of my 4GB RAM is used. Opening InDesign (always slow) increase that to 3.2GB. But the graph stays green.
Console shows several potential problems but I don't know if any are significant. In any case I will call my Mac store tomorrow to ask their advice about RAM.

Thank youThe thread running through your explanation has to do with connectivity to your server. (iCloud out of the blue asking for password, unable to message your boyfriend, unable to access e-mail). You said that you boyfriend restart his device and then the two of you were able to then imessage. My best advice for you would be to go to settings to reset to reset network settings. Once this has been done you then will need to enter the name and password of your wifi. ONce this is done you then can attempt to check to see that all passwords are enter correctly.

I have just purchased Mac OS X Lion Server. When I launch the Server App I am told I need to download additional software but once the App attempts to do so I get this message "Can't install Server Essentials because it is not currently available from the Software Update server".
I looked around on the internet and I found a few vague comments stating I may need to insert commands into the Terminal. Can anybody help me please?Had the same message myelf but it is there. Somebody posted a link to it, will see if I can find it......

Server Install: "Can't install Server Essentials"
We just purchased a brand new Mac Pro to use as a server, however the Server app refuses to install. The app was purchased directly from the app store, and when I run the installer I get the error "Can't install Server Essentials because it is not currently available from the Software Update server."
I read in another thread that this was solved by creating a new network location and removing the old one. This solution did not work for me. I've tried connecting via both wifi and ethernet and neither solved it (there is also no firewall, so the domain isnt blocked or anything- the app store and software update both seem to work fine).
I also read that you need to install server on 10.7.0 or it won't work. Well, that is completely unnacceptable since the Mac Pro came with 10.7.3 preinstalled, and the recovery partition will only install the most recent version. The direct links to the ServerEssentials.pkg are also dead, so that solution is out. Any ideas?Same problem. Just redeemed my Apple Developer code. I'd also like access to the actual .DMG or .PKG files for the install but it seems that the AppStore revoked that capability and the old methods to access those files no longer work. Come on guys...

Where is your site hosted? If it's hosted on MobileMe you can use SEO to edit the site online. No need to get it locally.
If the site is hosted with a 3rd party fpt client then publish your site to a folder on your hard drive, use SEO on it there and then upload the site to your server with a 3rd party ftp client.

Not sure 10.7.3 is still available over the internet download system. I think Apple waws more on the ball this time and switched the Recovery HD system download over to 10.7.4 fairly Quickly.
That may or may not be part of your problem.
It may also be your internet connection is flakey and is dropping the connection with the download server.
If you are doing this over a WiFi connection try connecting the Mac to your router with an Ethernet cable. -

Can a RMI Server trap an exit event of its client ??
For example
If I close the client using Ctrl-C, can the Server known what one of its client is closed ??You could consider allocating a new remote object per client via some login object. In my book I called this the 'remote session' pattern. That way each client can have its own server-side context, i.e. like an EJB session bean, which can have its own advantages. In fact if you're interested in when a specific client disappears, you must already have some client context so this is a clean solution to that as well.
Then the session object can use the Unreferenced technique to know when the client has gone away unexpectedly, albeit with a 10 minute delay. This can be tuned via the java.rmi.dgc.leaseValue setting at the server. This works because each session object only has one client.
If you can't do this and you can't control the client code, I'm not aware of any other solution under RMI.
Except that as a last resort you could do something really fancy with custom socket factories at both ends that both implement a special ping protocol I suppose, but this is getting pretty hairy and you'd need to understand the RMI wire protocol to make it work. -
OS X Server setup advice needed for small business
I work as audio engineer at a recording studio. I'm an experienced Mac user, but I don't have Mac Server experience. I'm my company's default IT guy. Our office consists of four people, currently using PCs, but we are changing to a Mac-based office: each person will get an iMac, and we'll also get a Mac Mini with OS X Server. And a Time Capsule for both the Apple router and Time Machine backups. The machines will be connected with ethernet for Gigabit networking.
The server will be used primarily for two things:
1. Server-based scheduling/contact database program that each user will log-in to for access
2. Hard drive for storing audio files that will be delivered to clients (currently FTP delivery)
I'm learning about OS X Server services - there's some great You Tube tutorials by Todd Olthoff http://www.youtube.com/user/tolthoff.
The office users currently run their computers as independent PC's with all files stored on their local machines. The network lets them share files, as well as share two printers. Note that my plan is for each office user to continue to store their files locally on the iMacs, not on the server.
I'm trying to decide how much of OS X services I can take advantage of.
I have some specific questions I'm hoping to get some advice on. These questions came up after viewing Todd's tutorials:
1. Do I need Open Directory
I think I do, in order to create local network users. Is this a given for me?
2. We do not have a static IP address. Do I need to establish DNS services?
3. Do I need a verified SSL Certificate?

Remember that ftp is wildly insecure, and a very large ftp credentials dump — reportedly including credentials from the New York Times and some other users — was just posted. ftp is a massive pain in the rump around modern networks; the protocol design predates the uniquitious use of firewalls in modern networks.
Read: I'm not a fan of ftp.

If you want to start using the same login across different Macs in your office, then you want OD.

You need local DNS services on your LAN (probably established via OS X Server), and you'll need external DNS to allow external folks to get to your file servers, and you'll need static IP from your ISP. If you get to using your own mail, you'll need a proper DNS configuration — forward and reverse DNS translations and the MX record must all match — for that.
3. Do I need a verified SSL Certificate?
Unless you're serving HTTPS or such, no. You don't even need a certificate and can use a self-signed one, if you're small and not serving much publicly from this server, and not doing something like ecommerce, and if whatever you're doing isn't a target for those that want to spoof or crack web sites; if you're not more of a target than most of the rest of us on the 'net.
Any additional advice is welcome!
I'd probably look to add a VPN-capable firewall router box here, and would use the Time Capsule as a so-called Access Point on the network — not as a NAT-capable gateway router. This if you don't already have a router of some sort. Time Capsule makes a nice home router or low-end SOHO router, but it's fairly limited in its features.
You absolutely need LAN-local DNS, and you need that correct and working and tested before you enable other services on your network.
I'd recommend using a real and registered domain on your internal network, and using a separate (and registered) domain outside your network. You can get away with using a subdomain inside, but that means more typing as it's just longer. I'd avoid a made-up domain, as ICANN is adding all sorts of new domains. I'd also avoid squatting on a domain, and never use the .local top-level domain as your own DNS domain. Leave .local to Bonjour only.
