Can os x server Profile Manager updates iOS os and appl installation?

I've currently use Apple configurator to push profiles, update OS and app deployment to our College ipads. Have been told to use os x server to deploy instead. After upgraded the macbook air to mountain lion and install os x server, i'm kinda wondering does the profile manager in os x server is only for pushing out profiles and assigning users to the ipads etc? Do i still need to use apple configurator to do all the updates and appl installed first then use profile manager to push profile?
We've got quite alot of ipads need setting up and we normal use a ipad case where one usb cable connect to the laptop and charging case to deploy our apps.

Access Mac Mini Server (profile management) through reverse proxy

Hi,
Newbie in Mac's world and yet trying to make it more complicated as it is.
As we recently (last month) decided to equip our sales force with iPads, they were configured through Apple Configurator tool running on a dedicated Mac Mini Mountain Lion.
Now, I'd be keen in moving this configuration to the Profile Manager, part of the OSx Server plugin. So far so good.
Problem is the following : another web server is already on the LAN using both 80 and 443 ports. So all incoming traffic on those ports was routed to this other server. As Mac Mini Server default http/s ports may not be altered, I installed a reverse proxy server (Oracle VM - Ubuntu 12.04LTS - pound), configured to deal differently traffic on those ports according to the domain name (host) of the web request (header). Each 'local' server has been allocated a domain name. Just to be clear, traffic is now routed by the WAN/LAN router, for those ports, towards the reverse proxy, configured to reroute the traffic to the correct destination.
So far so good, it works like a charm, except... as soon as we enter https protocol on Mac Mini Server Profile Manager.
Access from an iDevice to the Mac Mini Server Profile Manager login page is fine, but as soon as password is confirmed, safari is pending and finally a message 'An internal serer error occured. Please try later again' appears.
Looking to both reverse proxy system log and Mac Mini profilemanager.log files to trace the problem, the following lines are produced at this particular moment :

I guess the '302 Found' is causing or explaining the problem.
I agree this might not be a Mac issue, so I still knock your doors hoping some of you could at least give a hint for what to search for !
If the pound configuration file is of interest, just ask, but this is pretty trivial, saying basically listen these protocols (http/https) on these ports (80/443) and according to Header content (check destination host) and reroute packet to LAN device (with given LAN IP address).
As the default port(s) of the Mac Mini Web Services may not be altered (so far I know), I guess I am stuck using 80 and 443 anyway.
Maybe should I invest time in changing my other apache server ports to some more exotic 8080 or 88 or whatever so Mac Mini Server Profile Manager default ports 80 and 443 are maintained and can be easily and directly rerouted to my Mac server without any reverse proxy along the way.

i'm also using reverse proxy technique to publish my server to the internet. The ip is used by twice domains. The problem is by using the profile manager
after login it redirects the url to the Local Area network addresse instead to the domain.
How to configure this on OS X Server and the Profile Manager Service?

Profile Manager Enrollment - iOS - Server Certificate Invalid

I have been getting an error trying to enroll iOS devices into profile manager. My MacBook and iMac enroll just fine. However my iPhone and iPad do not.
When I enroll my MacBook Pro, I first log into https://(FQDN)/mydevices, select profiles, Install Trusted Profile. I then go back to devices, and click 'Enroll now'. When I check the Profiles section of System Preferences, I see that the 'Trusted Profile' has added two certificates refering to my server. I can only assume one matches the Self Signed I generated shortly after making my hostname public, and the other Apple Push generated for me.
However when I do this exact same process on my iPad/iPhone, when I attempt the 'Enroll Now' step, I get the error "The server certificate for "https://(FQDN)/devicesmanagement/api/device/ota_service" is invalid.
My searches for this issue have turned up issues close to this, but never exactly this, and the solutions don't seem to work for me. Here are some key points to note:
1. Tried demoting to standalone, re-promote to OD Master, then deleted all certificates, and regenerated all (including the Push cert from Apple)
2. Ran sudo changeip -checkhostname
3. DNS routes forward and reverse correctly in my local LAN
4. I had been getting "Remote Verification failed: (os/kern) failure" / "TEAVerifyCert() returned NULL" in my logs every 3 seconds until I did the steps listed in '1'

Thanks for the info. That makes sence what you are telling me. Their instuctions are kind of bland and dont make sence as much as they should.
The only thing that scares me on this one is now we need to put a device in the dmz....
So now upgrading our xserv to 10.7 when it becomes stable would now be using the magic triangle, and trying to only have 1 to manage osx machines / and now ios devices. Edit our wiki's thats already in place, and have important databases on filemaker is now going to reside in the dmz....
So someone wasn't thinking on this one!!! haha
It looks like we will have to seperate things now, so ios devices are managed on their own machine in the dmz with now a hole leaked in the firewall for AD to authenticate so we can pull users down to associate profiles with them.
Our osx machine will then contain a seperate spot to manage osx devices bound to user accounts, as well as manage filemaker and wiki's that are in use already.
It would be nice if they had figured out a way to do this a little different so we wern't opening holes in the firewall.
The funny thing is I was able to get the ipad to bind and enroll the very first time when i was on a vpn tunnel from my house trying things out.
So I know you can do it, without having to go public, although the push service wasn't working properly and I was not able to bind osx and enroll. So i stared over.
Ill play around to see what I can figure out later. Thanks for the help. If you find out the port numbers please let me know as well! Im not able to move the box to an outside firewall right now. I have to much to do. I can probably do that next week.

VPP Distribution issues with OSX Server Profile Manager

Hi, I have a new issue with my OSX 10.9.5 Server. I use VPP to distribute apps to users devices, when I would add a new user I would send them an invitation message through /profilemanager . All was working well until recenetly , the message still arrives in the users mailbox however when you click the "sign in" link on the "receive apps and books from xxxxx" email instead of opening through the Mac App store app it now opens Safari and connects to the profile manager server , any ideas ? it never has done this before and although I thought it was a new feature or method I can not seem to resolve the issue.

Hi if when you are redirected back to your Mac Server you enter the user name and password of the user you are trying to receive VPP apps for i.e the Open Directory credentials it will then open the App Store providing the credentials are correctly entered so it looks like an additional layer of security. The process is click on the link in the VPP invite email, this takes you to your Mac Server profile manager, log on with your OD account, App store then opens on your Mac like it used to.

Can I use the Profile Manager as an MDM while distributing app through app store?

Is it possible to use the Profile Manager within the OSX Server to provision profiles through apps purchased in the app store?
Ex: userX buys app in the app store, in downloading the app they get enrolled in the MDM / OSX Server I control. They select profile settings within my app and submit to OSX Server (Profile Manager) at which point I send back OTA the provisioned profile for them to upload.

If your ipad has only 797 MB free and it tells you that you need 3.4 GB to update, then you need to begin deleing files, whatever it takes to free up space.
Consider...
Delete apps you don't use.
Delete videos you don't want (these take up a lot of space).
Do you have a lot of emails stored on the device?
Are there apps that store data files, like a PDF reader? If there are a lot of these, you need to delete some.
The bottom line is that you need to remove data and/or apps on your device to make more storage available.
But for videos and photos, always sync them to a computer first to archive them.

Forgotten Restrictions Passcode Help
You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.

Home Environment - How to set up Update Retriever (UR) and Thin Installer (TI) in a home environment

a) specify the download folder, pick a place all clients can access. Create a new folder, TI will be confused if there is other stuff in it.
b) change the settings to Severity -- Optional (assuming you want to see critical, recommended and optional downloads in the list), License -- Do not display and Status -- Active. After clicking next you enter the machine type, the op system and its language for each client you need to keep updated. Note that unless you change status to active everything will download as "test" and thus not be installed by the Thin Installer.
4. Run the download, about 1 - 1.5GB for the first type, opsys and language combination and an additional 0.5 - 1GB for each additional type depending on amount of overlap. You can be selective what you download but if you are an average home user -- just download all the items for your type/opsys/language combination(s) -- Thin Installer is a stripped down version of System Update and will decide what to install on the individual client. This is a one-time download, next time you run Update Retriever it will just download new drivers.
5. To initialize TI on each client, copy the program from the Program Files directory and paste a shortcut to the desktop. Then rightclick on the shortcut and choose Properties, and in the target field of the shortcut tab after "C:\Program Files\ThinInstaller\ThinInstaller.exe" add the following: -repository your_UR_download_directory.
6. Run the Thin installer on each client, it will perform exactly as System Update did, down to making the same mistakes that System Update did.
7. As the date is getting close when Windows Update will start distributing Vista SP2 you may want to consider using Microsoft's SPBlockerTools preventing SP2 installation for up to 12 months.
8. Debugging Tips
TI ending with message An error occurred while gathering user information is reported when running under Vista SP2 -- TI will not run in SP2.
Getting TI to "see" the database downloaded by UR is the main problem. If TI ends with a message saying corrupt or not found database you probably made a spelling mistake in the directory specified in the -repository parameter. If TI ends with a message saying no applicable packages to install it can mean a number of things:
a) If you are unused to modifying the parameters in a shortcut you may have added -repository to the second field in the shortcut tab instead of the top field labeled Target, the two fields look very similar or you just made a typo in "-repository".
b) Open UR again and first choose Modify settings on the left and double check that the directory there is the same directory you specified in -repository. Then choose Manage repository -- Update view and double check that all packages have status Active. If they don't it's not necessary to download again, just select all and hit the modify button to change status from Test to Active.
c) In C:\Program Files\ThinInstaller\logs there are update logs from TI. Open one using Notepad and in edit menu search for the string

This will tell you in which directory TI is searching for the updates. If it can't find a -repository parameter it uses an empty default databse
d) If you used System Update regularly up to when it stopped working on April 1 and if you have an older model with not so many new driver updates it may actually happen that there are no new updates for your machine (even though you downloaded a lot.) Go to here and enter all fields except model to see what Lenovo shipped after April 1. (Don't click on driver matrices, staying on the downloads and drivers pages will give you a list in chronological order with the ones after April 1 at the top.) Also be aware that the database UR downloads from is at least 2 weeks behind when the drivers first become available on the web. Right now, the only new download in the database applicable to most notebooks after April 1 is the Access Connections 5.22 driver. To check what release you have installed open Access Connections and go to help.
I just did a clean install of a Vista64 system on my T500 and after installing the first few drivers manually (including drivers for harddisk and ethernet) let Thin Installer install the remaining 36 items for me. The only item left to fix was the known bug in the Ricoh 4 in 1 card driver SU installation. (For a clean install you need to run TI or SU more than once, it doesn't find all drivers the first time.)

Did you change status from test to active in UR before downloading? If not you can change the downloaded items in the manage repository menu.
Assuming the items you did download were not already installed on your client with TI it should work.
