Can OS X Tiger be purchased on CD-ROM

my PowerMac g3 which I would like to upgrade only has a cd rom drive. I have os x tiger on DVD and I think apple only made it on DVD. did apple ever make it as a cd version?

Not normally, but it is possible to boot OS X from a FW drive, this helps boot larger volumes than the built-in controller supports. Beige G3's did not have FW, but the ports could be added on an expansion PCI card, not sure if those particular compatible cards are still widely available. With the use of the XPostFacto freeware, and a dedicated "helper" disc, i.e. an existing otherwise bootable volume like the first partition <8GB on an internal drive on the built-in ATA bus with or without an OS on it, then you can boot and install OS X on an external FW drive. The older beige G3 models require XPostFacto to install 10.4, and maybe 10.3 as well, I don't remember which version dropped native support on the Beige G3s.

XPostFacto helps to boot from the OS DVD installer on an otherwise unbootable optical drive so that you can run the installer, and helps to boot the installed OS from an otherwise unbootable drive, ie FW on the G3 it also helps you change the startup disc, when you are running the unsupported OS on the older G3, you can't use the regular startup disc utility.
Blue and White G3s are quite different, this may not apply to those at all. I am mainly speaking from distant and foggy memory of the Beige desktop G3 I had many years ago.

Just talked with Apple Support - AGAIN
Finally got some one who understood that this particular model WAS supposed to ship with 10.4.10 (as I had determined PRIOR to the selection/purchase). Not only are they sending a CPU (serial number) specific install set for 10.4.10 but volutarially included expedited shipping at no charge (I didn't ask, suppose their way of an apology for the past week of nightmares and BOGUS information). Now that's the Apple "Support" I recall from decades past.
SO, YES, I can (and will) boot from Tiger on this CPU - and can do so either from an Internal drive partition or from GTP format Firewire RAID array.
All those claiming that such a feat is an impossibly have not researched the specifics of this model thoroughly.

Do I have the correct Leopard disc? Can't upgrade Tiger

When Snow Leopard came out, I decided to upgrade my Tiger software to (regular) Leopard. (I can't make the leap to SL because not all of my programs are SL-compatible.) Tiger came on my Intel dual core iMac, and I've faithfully updated it to 10.4.11. I purchased a Leopard disc from HardcoreMac.com for $75, with the assurance that it would upgrade any Tiger Mac to Leopard. Upon trying to upgrade, the disc says it can't find Tiger on my computer . Looking closely at the DVD, it says "CPU Drop-in DVD." I've read varying accounts of trouble with these discs--that they only work with certain computers--but the ReadMe files on the disc itself say that it will indeed upgrade Tiger.
I'm not looking to do a clean install, just an upgrade. Do I have the right disc or did I get ripped off? It's a black disc, not a gray one. At this point, I'm pretty confused by all that I've read online, and just need a clear answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A downgrade generally has difficulty if the wrong drivers get downgraded, and corresponding applications don't get downgraded together.
It is safer to:
1. Erase and install 10.4.
2. Apple the 10.4.10 combo intel update:

actually having several problems, installed itunes on a new computer, have transfered/sync all of my existing ipod touch apps/music successfully. I purchased new apps and a movie, but they do not appear on my itunes library, how can i transfer these new purchases, to my new itunes library on the new computer, so they can be synced to my ipod touch. also, my computer is online and my ipod is online, but when i connect the ipod touch to my computer, and i try to update the software update, it says it cant because its not connected to the internet?...any info on either of these topics. thanks

as already mentioned, use File->transfer purchases to copy your apps and bought media to your computer, or right click on the device in the device list and choose "transfer purchases"

That is usually an indication that the Volume was never Erased or Partitioned for GUID partition table and Mac OS, and is still in a Windows format.
Mac OS X Extended (journaled) has no such file-size limitations
