Can Panther run Intel iMac?

I have a 20" flat screen Intel-based iMac. It came with Leopard and runs great (10.5.6). This computer replaces an older crt iMac which had a maximum OS capability of OS 10.3.9. I use Vectorworks 10 Mechanical cad software, published by Nemetschek. It runs fine on 10.3.9. They are not planning on making it compatible with Leopard and want me to purchase their $700 upgrade instead, even though I've been a loyal user for 15 years and have upgraded many times previously. I tried to start-up the new iMac from an external 750 GB LaCie harddrive on which I installed the OS 10.3.9 system from the original cds, but the Preference panel did not recognize that there was an external drive with this OS on it. The old iMac boots just fine from the LaCie so I know that the 10.3.9 is installed correctly on it. The icon for the LaCie drive, and all the other documents installed on it, appear on the new iMac's screen and can be opened without any problems-it's just that it seems that the new iMac Preference panel doesn't want to acknowledge there is a drive connected to it that has the OS 10.3.9 available. Can the new iMac run on 10.3.9? What is the minimum (oldest) OS that this new iMac can run on?

Can the new iMac run on 10.3.9?
No. 10.3.x will not run on any Intel-based Mac.
What is the minimum (oldest) OS that this new iMac can run on?
Adding to what Kappy said, only the specific version of Leopard that came with the system or a later release will work. An earlier version of the OS will not have the drivers to run your iMac's hardware.

  • Can the new intel iMacs run Classic?

Hi just wondering if anyone knows if you can run Classic on intel
Intel iMac 17" 1 Gig of Ram 1.83 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The inability to (easily?) run Classic was a big and unexpected issue for me, when I upgraded from my PowerPC 7500 running OS 8.6 to an Intel iMac. Frustratingly, the iMac had lots of software and lots of Help suggestions about how to migrate from OS 8 or 9 to OS 10... but none of it was useful on an Intel machine.
After a fair amount of work and some third-party shareware, got it all to work. Moving (exporting then importing) Quicken records was the most difficult task. The most persistent problem is the absence of extension or type/creator information on the files I've moved, which renders them invisible to Spotlight.

  • External drives that can boot up Intel iMac

I have just bought an Intel-based iMac.
My previous computer was an iMac G5 (PowerPC). If I needed to boot up from an external drive, it had to be a Firewire drive.
Does anyone know if the Intel iMac is the same? If something were to happen to that system and I needed to boot up from an external drive, does the external have to be Firewire, or will USB 2.0 work as well?
Incidentally, this Intel iMac has one Firewire 800 port. I read a review (although it could have been from last year) that if you have Firewire 400 peripherals, you won't be able to plug them into the FW 800 port unless you have an adapter. Did I read that right? I would have thought that they're simply backward compatible and work just as a USB 1.1 device would if plugged into a USB 2.0 port (the device would just run at the lower 1.1 speed). So where does one get these adapters (if needed)? Does the Apple Store sell them?

or will USB 2.0 work as well?
    Yes.
    Did I read that right?
Yes. The ports are physically different.
So where does one get these adapters (if needed)?
Click here for an example of what's needed.
Does the Apple Store sell them?
    Yes. Click here.

  • Can I run an iMac G3 266 in Kiosk mode?

I have an old iMac G3 266 that I want to donate to the local YMCA.
They need something to have for members to complete an online form.
The computer is running OS 8.6.
Is there a way I can:
    1) Run it in kiosk mode and have it go to one website
    OR
    2) Upgrade it to OS X and run it in kiosk mode
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I suggest checking out iCab. See icab.de
    "Kiosk mode
While in Kiosk mode, iCab will cover the whole screen and all other applications are blocked. The Kiosk mode is the ideal environment when the computer is accessing a public place (like fairs, exhibitions, hotels etc.) where users should be able to obtain information, yet prevent any external access to your system. Additionally, the access can be restricted to certain pages (even refusing referrals, if you choose)."

  • Can i run an iMac lying down? and what ventilation do i need for it to run inside a road case?

I am planning to build an all in one roadcase for all my equipment that is plug and play for touring. I've got a 27" i7 iMac and want to run it lying down inside the roadcase.
I want to know if an iMac is can be run laying down or will this harm it?
And how i would tackle issues of overheating if the imac is running enclosed? (vents etc)
Any help or advise would be great. I'm not sure if anyone will be able to help me but its worth a shot.
    Thanks

I am not 100% sure of this but there is a fan inside the imac which is designed to suck air in from the bottom and blow it out the top.  To some degree I think it also depends on convection currents (i.e., depending on heat rising).  So laying it on its side sounds like a bad idea to me.

  • Running intel imac under windows?

i just bought a new imac intel dual core and im extremely new to the mac world and not to great with computers so i was wondering if i could get some help with this.
i was reading up on some forums and found out that the imac's with the intel technology can run in either windows or mac OS X and i just have a couple questions right now.
    1) how do i get my mac to run under the windows OS?
    2) is it possible for me to switch between the mac and windows OS's?
i would really appreciate your honesty.

I am going to set up my iMac, on Saturday, to run Windows. I was originally going to purchase VirtualPC but out came BootCamp . . . Give it a read. Switching between the 2 OS's does not really happen. You boot off of one or the other, however you can move files (again, check the restrictions [30Gig]) between the 2 OS's.

  • Can I run an Imac on just an external hard drive via USB 3.0?

I erased the internal hard drive to clean install Yosemite (from Snow Leopard) but  now it's not visible in disk utility. Got an external drive with Yosemite to boot and run on my Mac (2010 21.5" 4gb ram, Core i3). Can I use a usb 3.0 external drive to replace the HDD? Looking to use a WD My Studio that runs at 7200 rpm. Only issue I have is the fan is on constantly. How long can I get away using the external drive before I have to replace the internal drive?

Take care of the problem now. You can continue to use the external drive, but you will need to use fan control software to deal with the fan.

  • Can not start INTEL iMac from external drive

I have a backup drive that has been cloned (Carbon Copy Cloner) from my iMac hard drive.  I can not restart from it using the iMac. (I can use it to restart my Mac Air with out any problem.)  When I hold down OPTION during restart the drive does not show up.  Also if I select it from the startup option, I can choose it, but the iMac fails to find it.  I should also indicate that I have a iMac with the fusion drive.  Not sure if this is part of the problem or not.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes the drive is connected.  it had to be to originally clone the iMac hard drive.

  • Can I run Intel Core i7-3770K on Mac Pro 2010?

I want to buy Mac Pro but I don`t like ATI graphics and I don`t need server. I want it like "gaming" machine
So I will change ATI Radeon HD 5770 by NVidia GeForce GTX 670... will it work? I will install parallel desktop in Mac Pro.
And I want to put in Mac Pro Intel Core i7-3770K, will it work???
Thanks a lot for all answers.
    (Sorry for bad english)

Build a PC. You are limited by the processor socket so nothing but LGA 1366, Nehalem-Westmere. No LGA 2011, no Sandy Bridge let alone Ivy Bridge-E
Yes a GTX with 2x6-pin power cables.
You are not a Mac Pro intended customer and gaming can be done better on Windows PC.

Does anyone know? If so what leads do I need?
    Thanks in advance!

The iMac Intel has a Mini DVI Port.According to PantherOnline that TV has a HDMI port so you would need:
Apple Mini DVI to DVI adaptor.
A DVI to HDMI adaptor and a HDMI lead. This will be the best quality possible.
According to dabs.com (which incidentally is much cheaper (£160 less) than on the site you list) for the same model lists a VGA port on the Samsung. So you could use the Apple Mini DVI - VGA adaptor and a suitable VGA cable; although the quality will be somewhat less it should still be very acceptable.

  • Can an intel iMac run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive?

Hi can anyone please tell me if it is possible to run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive on an Intel iMac running OSX 10.5 Leopard or later?
Or is it possible to partition the intel iMac's hard drive and add Tiger?
At the moment I am running Tiger on a partitioned hard drive shared with OSX Leopard and wish to upgrade to an intel Mac. I need tiger to run some software not compatible with newer Macs and also to access OS9 Classic. Thanx for your help.

IF you upgraded from Panther as you know you do not have an Intel based iMac. I beleive the limit of your upgrades on your current machine is going to be Leopard. The system requirements for Snow Leopard are:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply
This is straight from Apple so yes if you want to go beyond Leopard then you must purchase a new machine. My suggestion would be to begin replacing your legacy apps, you are extremely far behind and the longer you wait the more painful it will be to get current.
    Good luck.

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

  • How can i get my Imac, running OSX 10.6.8 with a 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, how can i get Final Cut Pro 4 and DVD studio pro 2 to run on it?

I just bought an IMAC running OSX 10.6.8 (not sure what flavor that is). The processor is 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo (Late 2006). When i run Final Cut Pro 4 on it I get the following error.
                        "Configuration error
This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing
                                    * AGP graphics Card"
If Final Cut Pro 4 doesn't run on my system, what version of Final Cut can I run on this as I am a filmmaker and really am comfortable with Final Cut Pro.
On the same note I also have DVD studio Pro 2 and that just quits without any message.
Hope any of you can be some help.
    Thank you,
    Doug
