Can Parallels work on a mac os x snow leopard v10.6 or later, or is snow leopard outdated?

I've looked into options on running windows on my laptop, and bootcamp didn't satisfy me as much as Parallels did, but when I went to the Parallels site, it only mentioned Parallels for Mountain Lion. Is there any way I can get a working version of Parallels for my Snow Leopard OS?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The most recent Parallels version is supported in Snow Leopard or newer, so you can use Parallels in Mac OS X Snow Leopard

Richard, I agree with you 1,000%. I wrote this in a forum a few weeks ago, when a user was complaining about Snow Leopard not supporting iCloud:
Why is it that if I bought a Mac before July of this year, I must pay to upgrade my operating system in order to take advantage of iCloud? Meanwhile, a Windows Vista SP2 user, who bought a new computer in May 2009, already has everything they need on their computer to use iCloud.
Why was it possible for Apple to write a free iCloud Control Panel that was compatible with existing versions of Windows, but Mac users must buy an entirely new operating system?
If Apple gave Mac users the same amount of backwards compatibility that it gives to Windows users, people with OSX 10.5 (Leopard) would be able to use iCloud. That's something to think about the next time you go to purchase a new computer.
(P.S. Something else to think about: If you bought a Mac before October 2007 (when OSX 10.5 was introduced), your computer won't run iTunes 10.5 unless you buy an upgrade. But a PC user, who purchased their computer as long ago as Sept. 2004(!), can run iTunes without an OS upgrade.)
I got so angry thinking about this, that I ended up writing an angry note to Apple on their feedback page. After repeating what I just wrote here, I asked them to commit to providing at least the same level of support to Mac users that they do for PC users when it comes to their cross platform products (iPhone, iPad, iCloud, Apple TV, Safari, iTunes, etc.) And, really, is that so much to ask?
I wish I knew how to start a petition requesting that Mac users get comparable treatment as PC users. But then again, shouldn't that go without saying?
Please leave feedback about this revolting double standard on the Apple feedback page. They should be thinking long and hard about why their own customers are treated worse than the customers of their competition.

  • Where can I buy an old Mac Book Pro with Leopard?

Hi, my old MBP died a couple of days ago, and I rushed to get a new one, as I needed to finish some projects. I discovered I can´t run Final Cut Studio 3 and none of my Adobe Creative Suite CS3 on it. Which means I am still stuck, in Germany, unable to work, and with an OS that´s totally useless to me.
I tried to figure out the best way to get Leopard on this machine, but it seems quite a challenge, and I am just thinking to take it back to the shop. Where would I be able to get an older one, new, possibly not refurbished?

Any refurbished, early 2011 MacBook Pro, sold by Apple, can have Snow Leopard installed on it. There's a good chance these will ship with Lion preinstalled, but if you can get the model specific install & applications disks from Apple, you can install Snow Leopard on any of these computers. You can only get these disks from AppleCare. But, if you want a recent MacBook Pro, and want Snow Leopard, other than used, this is a good choice.

  • Mac Pro with Snow Leopard instead of Lion?

Planning to replace an aging G5 with new Mac Pro. The machine's primary usage is editing in FCP (not FCP X). Most projects are long form and I'm in the middle of one right now that will be in post for the remainder of the year. Can I get the new Mac Pro with Snow Leopard (running 10.6.8 currently) instead of Lion to avoid potential issues moving the project over?

Not if you buy it new. All of them come with Lion. However, the current Mac Pro's originally shipped with Snow Leopard, and while it's not entirely clear, it may be possible to install Snow Leopard on a new Mac Pro. There are a number of threads here discussing that but the Cliff's Notes version is that the 2010 Mac Pro requires at least 10.6.4, and the last retail version is 10.6.3 so the retail installer won't work. If you can't get Apple to send you the Snow Leopard installer that once shipped with the Mac Pro, posters have said you can't use 10.6.4+ installers specific to another recent Macs to do the job. However, there is a discussion here http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20120123175902871 which explains how that can be made to work. I haven't tried it (I got my Mac Pro while it was still shipping with SL), I don't know if it would actually work, and I don't know if it's even legal, but there it is.

You run Windows in Parallels or Fusion. Then in Windows you install the program.

  • Parallel and Mac - can it work

    Hi,
I just bought a new 21.7 brand new imac and encountered several difficulties. So, any assistance will be very appreciated! I have to mention that I am (used to be???) a heavy office/PC user. So, here are my initial questions (I'm sure I'll have more later on):
    1. I'm using a parallel program to transport my PC files to the Mac. When I connected a printer (Brother), it recognized it and asked me where to associate it - the mac or the hosting operating system (that is, the windows). I marked the MC and also marked "not to ask this question anymore" which was a big mistake. Now, I cannot print anything from the windows, since it doesn't associates with the printer. Specifically, I want:
    1. To be able to associate the printer to both the OS and the windows that is on my parallel.
    2. To know how to manage the association of any new device that I connect (another printer, scanner, fax, etc.).
    2. Another question: Do I need to get an anti-virus for the Mac? what about the windows that is on my parallel (hosted system) ? Sometimes I browse the web or get mail through the windows - Can it damage the Mac in any way?
    3. What happens if the windows on the parallel get damaged for some reason? will that effect my files (on the Mac? on the windows?) will I be able to get the files from the windows anyway or restore them?
I know that some of the questions are general, but I am clueless on my first steps here, and i'd appreciate any assistance.
    Thanks!

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
2. To know how to manage the association of any new device that I connect (another printer, scanner, fax, etc.).
This question is probably best taken up in Parallels forum for their Mac product. You'll be most likely to get experienced assistance there (it's not really a question about expanding your iMac's hardware, which is the general purpose of this forum).
    2. Another question: Do I need to get an anti-virus for the Mac? what about the windows that is on my parallel (hosted system) ? Sometimes I browse the web or get mail through the windows - Can it damage the Mac in any way?
Antivirus for Mac OS X probably isn't necessary, but you absolutely must have antivirus and antispyware for your Windows installation in Parallels.
    3. What happens if the windows on the parallel get damaged for some reason? will that effect my files (on the Mac? on the windows?) will I be able to get the files from the windows anyway or restore them?
A "disk" in Parallels Workstation is just a file in the Mac OS, so if the Parallels file gets damaged, then except in very unusual circumstances it would not affect anything else in Mac OS X. Whether or not you could recover the files from the Windows virtual disk would depend on the nature and extent of the damage, so there's no way to predict. As with any computer situation, you'll want to maintain backups of your documents in Windows, just as you would if you were running a native Windows computer.
If you have additional questions about using Parallels Workstation, the Parallels forum will probably get you the fastest and most complete responses. If you have other questions about using your Mac, then feel free to post back. If it's a completely different question, you'll probably want to start a new topic so that people can spot it easily. Hardware questions can go here, but if you have general questions about using Mac OS X that aren't specific to an iMac, ask in the Mac OS X 10.6 area so that your question isn't seen only by iMac users.
    Regards.

OS X can natively read NTFS of Windows, but not write to it.
Windows can't read or write to HFS+ of OSX, and that's a good thing from a security standpoint.
Ideally if you share files between operating systems you should have a FAT/MSDOS formated USB key or hard drive. (exFAT external drive if any of your files are over 4GB in size) both these formats are universal for OS X or Windows.
If you install software into Windows and OS X to read each others formats, then you have to pay to update/upgrade it deal with headaches.
If you swtich between Windows and OS X a lot, don't need full hardware performance for Windows, you may consider installing virtual machine software like VMFusion or Parallels which can take a copy of your Windows in Bootcamp and place it into OS X as a file then run that copy of Windows in a window in OS X like so.
Advantage here is you run most of your light weight Windows programs like this at the same time as OS X.
Benefit is you can run just about any Windows or Linux version and OSX server editions (not client versions)
Bootcamp only allows Windows 7, that's it now.
You'll also be interested in two fre pieces of software, Carbon Copy Cloner and Winclone on macupdate.com.
CCC clones OS X partition and Winclone clones the Bootcamp partition. Valuable for you.

  • Can I run OS 10.6.x in Paralleles installed on a Mac running OS 10.7.2?

Can I run OS 10.6.x in Paralleles installed on a Mac running OS 10.7.2?
This question is related to my need to continuing using Quicken 2005, which is not supported by OS 10 7.2.  If I could load Mac OS 10.6.8 into Parallels and run Quicken 2006 in an emulated version of Mac OS, I could then run 10.7.2 and move onto iCloud.  I've looked at a couple of altehrnaftves to Quicken 2005 but none are as comprehensive as Quicken.

    Hi John,
That is an interesting question, to which I don't know the answer. You might try it on a separate drive or partition and see how it works. I run Snow and Lion but on separate partitions on my internal HDD. If you try it please let us know how it works.

  • Can i do work on my mac while it is backing up with time machine?

can i do work on my mac while it is backing up with time machine?

Doing backups should have hardly any impact on the Mac itself.. so if by work you mean typing a document or working with photos or something local it will have very little impact.. it is only internet connection that will be affected..
And incremental backups that are usually small should be over in a minute or two.. even by wireless. If your backups are huge each time.. there is something being backed up that should not be.. eg a parallels virtual disk. Or a local drop box. Where small changes internally to a file of very large size makes the TM do another whole backup.

Then it either is a pirate clone or you are misinformed.
Apple Computer has never used AMD processors in its products.
However, the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is a Radeon unit, which is an AMD subsidiary. Parallels, VMWare, VirtualBox will all work fine with the Intel Core i7 or i5 CPU that powers the Mac, and use the AMD Radeon GPU that drives the displays.

can I uninstall parallels 5 from a mac book with lion installed

Just to add to the conversation with some helpful information.
Prior to install i was more worried about finding a Quicken replacement than anything (decided on iBank).  I installed Lion and then realized as I was going through my system that Parallel 5 set up for my previous employer.  As suspected, it did not work. So I upgraded Parallels planning to eventually set it up again in the future including reinstalling the version of windows.  When I finally logged on with after the upgrade, all my files, etc. was still there.  Shocking but true.  Double check to see if this occured with any one else.  Good luck.
