Can power button put computer direct to sleep w/o dialog box?

Even if you need to install some third-party thing, is it possible?

The older Apple Studio Displays did this, but when the new cinema displays came out (and changed from an ACD to a DVI connection) that functionality was lost. The easiest way to sleep your mac is to either press the power button on the mac itself or the keyboard shortcut malcolm suggested.

    Hi fremley,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This article may be helpful with determining why your Mac Pro doesn't stay in sleep mode:

Some things reset the sleep timers, preventing the computer from sleeping:
Hard drive access (even if you're not using the computer, a running application might be accessing your drive, such as when downloading a large file or listening to music in iTunes)
Moving the mouse or using a portable Mac's trackpad, pressing a mouse button, or pressing a key on the keyboard
Some System Preferences settings (see below)
    Open applications (see below)

  • Make power button restart Imac Instead of sleep

When I press the power button on my Imac, It puts the computer in sleep mode automatically. Is there a way to change this to Shutdown or Restart or a menu of options?
    Thanks

The best use of the Power button is to turn your Mac on if it is off! The second best use is to configure it to sleep your Mac with a short press of the button.
There is no way in Mac OS X to configure the button to present you with a contextual menu of which I am aware. Nor do I know of a 3rd party app to do this.
The power button will power down (turn off) your Mac at any time. But it will not do it immediately because it is a bad idea to power down this way and should only be used as a last resort in an emergency. To power down you must press and hold the button until the Mac powers down.
Powering down this way is an improper way to turn off the Mac. It can cause damage to your hard disk's directory. Done often enough, the resulting damage could cause significant loss of data and require a lot of work to reclaim/regain the use of the hard drive.

  • Power button - orderly shutdown instead of sleep?

    Howdy,
We recently had a power outage in our office, and although our servers are all on UPSes, we reached the end of the batteries and had to shutdown the machines. Some were Linux, some were Windows, some were Mac Xserves. The only servers that wouldn't perform an orderly shutdown when the power button was pressed were the Xserves.
I know that you can make the machine go to sleep when you press the power button, but that's not quite enough for us. We actually want the Xserve to shut down completely. Can this be done? I'd appreciate it if someone could enlighten me.
    All the best,
    Jeff Kirk

Assuming the Xserves are attached to an appropriate UPS each this is easy.
Make sure the UPSes and Xserves are connected by either UPS or serial cables and go to System Preferences > Energy Saver. Switch the pop-up at the top to UPS and you should get a series of things you can select from to turn off your computer in an orderly fashion - by time on UPS power, time left etc.
Note this is taken from a 10.4 install but 10.5 should be similar. If your machine doesn't acknowledge the UPS that means that they're not communicating. If the Xserves share a UPS then you're on your own for scripting some solution where the one connected to the UPS tells the others to shut down.

  • Press power button once - MBP goes to sleep, Shift-Control-Media Eject (⏏) doesn't.

Hello, i've read here http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20131025154203251 and somewhere else, that in Mavericks, pressing the Power Button once, puts your screen to sleep.
But after reading here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5869 seems that it doesn't.
I also noticed that by pressing it once, your mac goes to sleep, but not immediatly.
So is the only way to put only the screen to sleep is by using Shift-Control-Media Eject (⏏) ?
    Thank you

@speleofool Thanks for posting and congratulations on the new device! The Nexus is a great phone! Regarding your issue about waking up, this is very odd for a new device. I did some research and it seems this is not a known issue with the phone. I would recommend doing the following steps:
    Settings>Apps>Choose all Apps>choose System UI>clear data>force stop.
This will stop your screen from freezing and wake up when it should. I would make it a practice to clear data from apps that give you trouble. I hoped this helps. Thanks.

  • Why won't my Power Button allow the iMac to sleep anymore?

When trying to make the imac sleep, the power button no longer works to allow me to do that? Can i ask if anyone had the same issue and has fixed it? I did the SMC thing but It still wont go to sleep.
    Thanks

If none of that helps, it could be your power button needs fixing.  Mind you, I don't like using the power button, since it can just as easily accidently act like you are powering down without saving anything, create a scenario where your directory may get damaged.

  • How can I create a new UDL w/o calling a dialog box, or going through Windows?

I'm using Labview 6.1 and the Database Connectivity Toolset. I know the conventional ways of creating a UDL, but with the SQL toolkit there was a vi on the Knowledgebase site that created a DSN seamlessly, with no dialog boxes at all. Is there such a thing to create a new UDL?

Depending on your operating system, things may be slightly different, but on Win 2k, use the administrative tools->Data Sources Administrator to create some sample DSNs that you can look at. You want to create a 'file DSN,' as 'User DSN's and 'System DSN's appear to be stored elsewhere. (Maybe in the registry)
I'm attaching an example DSN that I have been using as well.
    Best of Luck to you,
    Alex

  • Can I define the filepath in "TDMS Open" through a dialog box instead of an explicit definition?

I'm trying to access a TDMS datafile with "TDMS Open", but I can't ensure that it will always be in the same place.  I've got code that does what I want with the datafile, but I'd really like a dialog box that will generate the filepath.  I'd like to be able to navigate to where the file is, and when selected, define the filepath.
I've seen this in other vis (if the filepath is left blank, it asks you for the file), but not here. Any thoughts on how to replicate it here?

  • I can't open an .ai file in Illustrator without a dialog box appearing "Open PDF."  I have no idea what I can't open it as an Illustrator file (and not a PDF)

Once I open a page as a PDF, all my layer info is lost.  I've tried opening it on two machines and the dialog box continues to appear.  Again, it's not a PDF extension.
    Thanks for the help!

Since you're sure you saved it back to CS5, the issue might have been caused by saving directly to the server. Illustrator does not particularly like that.
90% of corrupt files are caused by saving directly to the server.
You might try and first copy the file to your harddisk and then open it from there. Opening files directly from the server is an issue as well.

  • When I add a photo filter to an image, I can't use the color sampler in the photo filter dialog box. It automatically selects white. What am I doing wrong?

Whenever I add a photo filter to an image, I can't use the sampler tool that automatically appears when you open the photo filter dialog box to manually select the color of your filter. Whenever I try to use it, it automatically selects white (#ffffff), no matter where I click in the image. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks

When you add an adjustment layer, the layer mask is automatically active. You need to activate the pixel (image) layer by clicking on it in the Layers panel.

  • How can I return to the last selected item in a dialog box

In OS 9 using Dreamweaver (for example) when I was adding images to a document, each time I added one the dialog box would return to the last selected image and I could just arrow down to the next in the list, add it (exiting the dialog box) and then repeat the process until I had added all the images in the folder. Now, using OS 10.4, after I add an image, and return to the add image dialog box it goes to the first item in the folder list instead of the last selected item. this really slows the process down, and when I'm adding 100 items or so, it's a real drag. I figure there has to be a way to get the dialog box to return to the last selected item, but I don't know what it is. Help!

sorry, that is not what I want to do.
I want to return to the initial state before I quit the app.
Actually, I want to return to the intial state after I click a row in a table the second time.
    Sorry, I didn't say clearly.

  • I want the image preview put back into PS CS6 file open dialog box (WIndows)

    PATCH IT NOW ADOBE!!!

I sense a bit of frustration.  It's understandable.  I've expressed some of the same myself on occasion.
Ssprengel and I have suggested this solution to you as it actually improves many things beyond just working around the omission in Photoshop functionality.
Even with Photoshop CS5 and earlier I had added the codec pack.  The codec pack provides more than just an image preview in Photoshop dialogs, as it adds awareness of the image to all Windows functions, including the Windows Photo Viewer for example.  Like you, I prefer not to use Bridge.  Consider this Explorer window:
You're certainly welcome to not buy the upgrade to Photoshop CS6.  No one's twisting your arm.  Unfortunately, your alternatives are...  ???  And keep in mind if you do skip Photoshop CS6, the upgrade to Photoshop CS7 will be hugely more expensive.

  • My iMac will not go to sleep when I press the rear power button.

It will, however, if I press sleep in the apple menu using the mouse. This has recently started since I upgraded the memory and ran disk doctor. I know the rear button is not broken as it feels fine and powers up the computer when switched off.
I have researched this and cannot see an answer for specific problem.  Any help appreciated!

First I would personally get rid of Disk Doctor, Apple has made every effort to fight Malware, Spyware.  First and Formost Viruses do not affect Mac's however if you have Windows installed that could change but I would come on here and check the users and what they use.
If you simply walk away from your Mac it will automaticly go to sleep and a simple click of your mouse will wake it up.
    Cheers

Most users leave there computers on 24=7 They go to sleep on there own and you can set when the computer goes to sleep when not in use.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 13'' - Power button and sleep mode

I just updated my Mac, which is the latest Macbook Pro Retina 13''. All of a sudden, it refuses to enter sleep mode when I press the power button, which worked perfectly fine before the update. I now have to manually enter sleep mode from the monitor. After entering sleep mode, It works fine to press the power button to make it work again, but not reverse. Why?
    Thanks in advance!

I have this problem as well. Worked perfectly before I updated to OS X Mavericks (10.9.2).
Now I have to hold the power button in for it to sleep or click on it for a few times. But there is no problem when I'm going to wake the computer up, just a single push and it works fine. Is this a software issue or a hardware issue? Any respond from Apple regarding this issue and how to solve it? Or should i contact my retailer?

  • Energy saver does not put computer to sleep

i have a new 15 inch macbook pro running 10.6.4. When the energy saver (i have checked all the proper buttons putting computer to sleep after 5 minutes of non use) puts the computer to "sleep" it actually does not sleep...it appears to sleep but the sleep light says illuminated (instead of pulsing) and then eventually the computer battery is drained and the computer needs a hard restart. All other sleep methods properly put it to sleep from choosing from the apple menu to shutting the lid...I assume there might be some program that is running in the background but when i look at console activity i see nothing noted...any thoughts as to how to solve this problem? thanks

You might try a SMC reset:
