Can PPC G5 boot from Intel disk copy (or vice versa)?

I'm aware that at the moment one cannot boot a PPC Mac from an Intel system drive, although I think I read somewhere that under Leopard this would change and that a PPC Mac would be able to boot from and Intel system and vice versa. My question is, will this be the same for Leopard Server?
I have a G5 server and would like to add a second (Intel) server to the rack and mirror two drives on the G5 together with a third on the Intel server so that if the G5 server fails, we could immediately boot up on the Intel server using the up-to-date mirrored drive already installed. Does anyone know if this will be possible with Leopard Server?
Thanks,
Keith

10.4.7 and newer (there is at least 10.4.8 too) is available as UB for both Intel and PPC.
Running a second Xserve as a fireWire targetmode machine/drive might be possible but doing it for long perods of time can't be good as at least the fans will run at top speed all the time.
Moving a boot drive from one machine to another should also present problem because the partition info on the drives must be different (?) : Apple Partition Map (PPC) vs GUID (Intel).
I can't tell you if it is possible to have one drive configured so you can boot both PPC and Intel machines from the same partition (the DVD can be booted on both of course).

  • Can i & how to boot from install disk copy to reinstall os10.4

i am farly computer illerate, sorry...this is a two parter: i have an older g4 that was running 10.2 and it has malfunctioned in that it isn't showing the finder or disk or any other plugged in periphial device like my usb hub or flash drive or camera or card reader or mp3 player. i have alot of i tunes and want to save to a different g4 i just picked up that seems to operate good. it's running 10.4.11 and the guy i got it from gave me a set of copies of that software install disks.
first i can't use firewire conections because the old computer freezes up anytime i get it booted and try to acess anything...i heard that i could put the old hard drive in the working machile and copy my library. i did this (after finally figuring out to set the jumpers correctly!) and it put some of my music on but not all of it...i put the old drive back in the old machine and the complete library is still there so.
i'm currently in process of downloading those cd's i still have access to and have accepted i'm going to lose the rest...
question 1: is there some way to get them from the older hard drive when it's in the newer machine as a slave drive?
question 2: can (and if so, how do i go about it, literally) rebooting to it and reinstalling a newer software version fix my older computer, or at least recover all it's memory so i can useit as extra storage?

Yes, you can format it, but honestly, with it being only 20 GB, quite old & possibly next to failing, as well as drives that are faster & 25 times as big are fairly cheap... myself, believing in Karma, would find somebody that has less & would be willing to work with it.
    >Stoopid technology...
I titally agree, & anymore the tech seems only directed at Bloat, Obsolesence, if it doesn't work just buy the newest/latest/greatest until 6 monts down the line.
I'm in biz for myself and can tell you that it doesn't pay to sell things that last for 5,10, 20 or more years, give solid advice for free... I'll likely be out of biz within 2 months after 40 years & be $200K in the hole.

  • Why can't I boot from the OS X DVD on my Intel iMac?

I'm trying to boot from the Mac OS X Tiger CPU Drop in DVD that came from the Apple Refurb Store with my Intel iMac.
I have tried holding down the C key on start up and it doesn't work. It boots like normal to the hard drive
I have tried using the Start up Manager, but all it can see to boot from is my installed OS X system on the hard drive and my Windows Boot Camp partition.
The CPU Drop in DVD is all that shipped with my machine. Can one even boot with it?
My problem is Photoshop Elements refuses to start up, giving me EXCBADACCESS and KERNINVALIDADDRESS alerts. It crashes every time about half way through starting up. Trashing it's preference folder doesn't fix the problem. In fact, my Preference folder keeps filling up with folders labeled with jibberish names.
I found a discussion thread that I should boot from the original disk that came with the machine and use Disk Utilities, but I can't even boot from the DVD drive.
    What step am I missing?
    TIA
    Kathryn

    Hi knittsings!
It's only possible to boot an Intel-based iMac from a grey-labeled DVD, so if you received a black-labeled DVD, someone made a mistake packaging your refurb. The correct DVDs should have been in the smaller box with the User Guide and other small, square documents, along with the mouse and remote. If you find the grey-labeled DVDs in there, just keep the drop-in DVD, they won't need it back since they make them:)
If you don't find them in there, call Apple, or log into your account on the Store page and find your order's link for customer follow-up/issues.

  • Cannot boot from installed disk on Intel Xserve

    I have an Intel Xserve.
I have had it for some months,it has been working fine, it is a standby backup machine to others and is used as a testbed.
I have just installed from the supplied DVD 10.4.8.
The installation goes smoothly, however after the first reboot. The system is trying to install from dvd again.
I have tried installing a known working Intel boot disk, and this just gives a folder with the flashing question mark.
I have tried formatting the disk and partitioning making sure to use GUID partition and it doesn't boot.
I can however boot from a external FW drive with 10.4.10 installed.
I can then go into Startup disk and set the boot disk as on of the installed drives, but this has No effect.
I am currently trying to Clone from the FW drive to an installed drive.
    Has anyone seen this behaviour?
Can someone tell me what I can try to resolve this.
All I have read regarding Flashing Question Marks is to ensure disks are using GUID partion and when booting from another disk to set the boot disk in the System Prefences.

    Welcome to the forum!
You're missing the first disk which is "Rescue and Recovery", followed by CDs 1-7.
Make sure to re-align the partitions before or after OS installation in order to get the proper utilization of that SSD.
    Good luck.

  • Can't boot from hard disk or from windows 7 recovery dvd

    I have a 970A-G46 motherboard.
I can't boot from hard disk or from a windows 7 recovery dvd.
If I move the hard drive to another PC, it boots fine.
If I put the DVD in another PC's dvd drive, it can be accessed.
This machine will boot from an Ubuntu dvd and I can then access the HD directories and the recovery dvd.
What do I need to do?
    Help and thanks

"I can't boot from hard disk or from a windows 7 recovery dvd."
What is that DVD from? Is it from a previous computer of some kind? Same question for HDD and the OS on it.

  • I am purchasing a hard drive with OSX v  10.5 installed on it. can I make a usb or disk copy of 10.5 Leopard from this hard drive copy

I am purchasing a hard drive with OSX v  10.5 installed on it. can I make a usb or disk copy of 10.5 Leopard from this hard drive copy
    Regards
    Jay

If the Mac in your signature is what you desire to use 10.5 with, you can't do so, it is too new.
If PowerPC application compatibility is what you desire with that Mac, look at this solution:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295#ROSETTALION
10.5 only was distributed by CD and updates to 10.5 from free online downloads.  Why do you want 10.5, and what do you desire to put it on?  Is the person sending 10.5 using 10.5 for anything?  If he is, he can't sell the drive.

  • Wich Sun machines can boot from SATA disk?

    Hi,
I would like to know which (newer and older) Sun machines can boot from SATA disks.
I think this is a feature of the OBP - so the question is:
Are there any updated OBPs for older Sun machines to boot from SATA disks?
    TIA
    Bernd

    Hi,
I am aware the limit with earlier openboot revisions that limit ATA drive size to +130GB>>( search the forum for previous threads on this topic ), I recommend using only
supported drives in Sun SPARC systems. What kind of project are you working on? That's my private test environment. Due to my limited budget I use only older machines there (for example, U10, U30, etc). I was thinking about buying a used V120 or something like that to replace my existing fileserver.
A V120 with two internal 500 GB harddisks would be perfect for that .
Looks like I've to wait until used T1000 are available to a reasonable price.
    regards
    Bernd

  • Booting from new disk drive

After copying all of my old drive onto a newer one I want to have all the computers that previously used the old drive boot into the new one. I can see the drive on my main server desktop but cannot boot from it. Any suggestions or readings you can suggest?

    Several questions.
What application did you use to copy the files? SuperDuper! (full disk cloning is free; a very good app by the way). Carbon Copy Cloner? Both of these apps will clone a disk and make it bootable.
Were you able to boot from this disk before?
Is this disk an external firewire or USB? As far as I know all Mac with a firewire port can boot from a firewire bootable disk. I think only more recent Macs can boot from a USB disk.
You mentioned server. Are you by any chance trying to do a NetBoot? After all this is the *Networking and Web* forum. If so then the Mac OS X Server forum might be a better place to ask about NetBooting.

  • New MacBook won't boot from external disk

I have a new MacBook that I am trying to boot from an external disk that had the system from my first gen MacBook Pro. When I restart holding the Option key, and select my external disk, the system restarts again and won't let me boot from that disk. Is there something different with the OS (10.5.6) that is installed on a newer MacBook that won't allow it to boot from the same OS from an older MacBook Pro?
    Thanks

    golferx,
Will any other Intel Mac boot from the drive? If not, it's possibly because the drive uses an Apple Partition Map (bootable for PowerPC Macs) instead of a GUID Partition Table (bootable for Intel Macs).
To check: open to Disk Utility, select the hard drive on the left, select the Partition tab and look at the text at the bottom right corner of the window under Partition Map Scheme. If it says anything other than GUID Partition Table, you will need to erase and repartition it as such before it will be bootable.
Just a thought. Hope this helps. Good luck!

  • Firefox won't insall into my applications folder. Says can't install because libsmime3.dylib is in use. I am running Mac Os 10.6.7 on a Macbook Pro. I can run firefox okay from the disk image but just won't install into the apps folder.

My system is a Macbook Pro running Mac Os 10.6.7 with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram. The upgrade downloads fine, but when I try to drag the firefox image onto my appication folder, I get a dialogue box that says...Cannot install application because "libsmime3.dylib" is in use. I can run Firefox fine from the disk image.

Nope---didn't work. I've owned Macs for about 12 years so although I am brain dead on some things, I do have a working knowledge on most things. I only say that to say this--I did try holding down the mouse and choosing empty trash. It asks if I want to permanently delete what's in there. I say yes--and then I get the same identical message again-----'The operation can't be completed because the item "Firefox 8.0.1.dmg" is in use I can then click stop, or continue.' So apparently that complains the same way it does if I click it up on the menu :)))
As for item owned by---that's not an issue and isn't coming up. User is not a problem either as I am the only user on this system. There is only ONE file in my trash at the moment at that is this dmg file. Nothing Mac. Nothing owned by anyone other than Firefox. The problem seems to be that the dmg file and the original 4.0 FF file are working in tandem with each other--even though I have already drug the new 8.0 globe into the Apps folder and it updated the FF app with the new stuff. If I could force the dmg file to go away, I would do so, but at every turn the system is telling me it can't be done because it seems to think that dmg file is in use---even though everything is shut down and/or ejected. Hey--I'm getting ready to head out and won't be back till evening. I'll check back in this evening. Thank you again for your help.

  • Though the root disk is mirrored, server is unable to boot from alternate disk (mirror disk)

    Hi PPl,
It happened second time in a row. Though the root disk is mirrored, server is unable to boot from alternate disk (mirror disk)
When the disk was found faulty, still unable to boot the OS from alternate disk, it says it still probe/look for other disk
Here are the console log when I tried to boot the OS

In such condition left out with only two options.
    1)      Remove the faulty disk physically and boot
    (or)
    2)      Replace the faulty disk and boot it
Any way, I can disable the faulty disk in BIOS (or) booting from cd-rom and do something to avoid it?

You can't boot from systems earlier than that shipped with the computer. For example, early 2008 Mac Pros come with 10.5.1 and can't boot 10.5
Also you can't boot with a DVD that was shipped with a different model Mac.

  • After installing Lion I can't I boot from the Techtools CD.

After installing Lion I can't I boot from the Techtools CD. I have purchased the upgrade for Photoshop CS5 because CS2 does not launch in Lion 10.7.3. However I need to get the serial number for CS2 for the upgrade. I have waited over 30 minutes for the boot but never get more than the Apple logo. Any ideas anyone?

Boot disks can't change when the firmware changes, lock you out.
Techtools obviously uses Linux as a boot OS, so you need a Lion version.
CS6 coming out in about 30 days, for 10.7 and 10.8

  • Disk Utility says HD needs repair-how to boot from original disk?

    Hi,
My iMac has been acting up badly. Finally on Friday, it had trouble turning on and a burning smell arose from the top. Came on but with the blinking folder with question mark. So turned it off and tried again to turn on: no chime and couldn't turn it on.
Went to Genius bar this a.m. Tried different cord. It turned on. Everything came up fine. Genius ran special test. Everything came back with green check. But he said the internal hard drive could very likely be starting to fail.
Back home. Just ran the Disk Utility to "Verify." It couldn't continue verification. Got these messages:
    Invalid volume directory count.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
    Questions:
    1) Can I repair using the First Aid utility (or is it more about getting a new HD)?
    2) If so, can someone remind me what keys to press on startup to boot from the CD?
    3) I have 10.5.8 right now. Can I still boot from the original Tiger installation CD and use that Disk Utility?
Thanks for your urgently needed help!

If you're on 10.5.8 have you not got that disk as that would probably be the best one to use? If not, the disk that came with your Mac should still boot up. Disk in drive and restart holding down the 'C' key. Hopefully it'll boot - albeit slowly. At the multi-language screen choose your language and at the next screen from the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility. Select Macintosh HD on the left and 'repair disk'. Hopefully it'll do the necessary repairs. If it fixes anything click 'repair disk' again until you get a clean pass and then from the Apple menu restart as normal.
If you haven't got a backup make sure you make one ASAP.

Won't boot from any disk, already changed VRAM battery, no success. tried hardware disk once and ran a full scan, said error with Video, but now won't boot at all with any disk. Screen is choppy also(have pic). Thinking video graphics card? Not sure. Need help!

Hi bribiel, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It certainly sounds like the Video card from the little info we have, & that can certainly cause it to fail to bootup.
