Can Pr Elements read H.264/MPEG-4 AVC ?

Premiere Elements 7 has been fine for my limited purposes until now, but I've recently started using wildlife cameras, which record video in the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec in an AVI wrapper. The resulting videos play perfectly well on Windows Media Player, and can be edited by Windows Movie Maker, but Premiere Elements 7 won't read them.
Is there a way I can persuade PrE7 to read this sort of video? If that's not an option, does anyone know if PrE12 can read them?

Blacknest
Thank you for the opportunity to take a look at your .avi files which both appear to have H.264 video compression and MPEG Audio (probably MP2) 2 channel. That video presented an atypical one for Premiere Elements in its 1280 x 720 @ 18.000 progressive frames per second. MediaInfo read the video compression as H.264 rather than the avc1 which it typically uses to represent AVCHD (MPEG2 AVC/H.264). We could dig deeper into any subtle differences here in the naming and other for H.264 versus AVCHD.  But the best course of action comes from the great contribution of John T. Smith and your follow up on that to get your video into Premiere Elements.
I looked at changing the file extension from .avi to the types that I mentioned previously, including .mp4. All would not import into Premiere Elements. Premiere Elements did accept the .avi file, but only the audio was represented. I was able to convert your H.264.avi into H.264.mp4 using VLC Player converter component. That H.264.mp4 did import into Premiere Elements, but, although there was a video component represented, its thumbnail was distorted.
You did a great job with the Dropbox download setup.
Please update us on your progress with the Premiere Elements editing and export of your H.264.mp4 video now that you have gotten into a format that Premiere Elements will accept. From what you wrote, the video compression is supposed to be the same as the original. It is just the file extension that has been changed. Is that correct?
Continued success and congratulations to you and John T. Smith on a job well done.

  • Off the top of anyone's head, is H.264/MPEG-4 AVC safe for editing?

Hi. My Samsung MX20 camcorder outputs as MP4, and I tried converting it to AVI because I thought that there would be more trimming tools for AVI. I tried probably 3 or more MP4 to AVI converters, and all AVI ouputs never played properly in Elements. I had the following 2 problems happen to me that have been addressed already in the forums:
Premier Elemenets 7 playing clip too fast, audio normal...
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2613385
.AVI video not importing correctly. Imports as audio only.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2712057
In addition to these 2 things, I got random stuttering with other AVI files.
I couldn't figure out how to trim and export with VirtualDub without blowing up the size, so I gave up on that. I recently found good MP4 cutting software, such as Yamb, so I thought I was good. But after testing it out, the sync was off. I tried other splitting software, but there were problems also with the MP4 that was output.
I’ve decided to not convert, split, or touch the original MP4s.

I downloaded the K-lite codec pack and ffdshow, but my windows media player doesn’t play the camcorder files, which I don’t’ mind, because VLC and Quicktime do. The camcorder files play in Elements 7, but I think there’s some choppiness that is due to my slow computer.
I was just wondering if H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is a red flag in the same way that Divx and Xvid are.
I saw a description of a Sanyo Xacti VPC-E camcorder that outputs as AVC/H.264 also, and that product comes bundled with Elements 4. 7 should be compatible right?
    Thanks.
I probably shouldn’t post since the original MP4s play, but I’m just wondering if this type (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC) may be problematic later on.

I can't find any evidence in the specs for this camcorder that is shoots in AVCHD video.
From the specs it appears that the camcorder shoots standard-def video. Beyond that, the specs are pretty vague, so I have to take your word for it that it saves video as MP4s.
Unfortunately, if it is not saving to the AVCHD standard, the video is not likely to be compatible with Premiere Elements and you will not be able to edit it without converting it to a more standard format, like DV-AVI. This could well explain why you are experiencing the other challenges you describe.
The FAQs to the right of our forum describe how to convert to DV-AVIs. Super, which is free, may work -- but Quicktime Pro, which costs $29 from Apple.com, definitely will.

Also, which project preset did you choose when  you opened your Premiere Elements project? That too could be relevant.

  • Can Premiere Elements read .vob files?

I have some .vob files that I generated from an old VHS tape.  I want to convert them to mpg or some other format so I can edit them and post them on the web.  Can Premiere Elements do this?
    Thanks!

If you used a VHS/DVD deck, you may have an issue with the first VOB, because it will also contain Menus and navigation instructions, plus the first part of the MPEG-2 AV file. This ARTICLE will give you some background. With a 100% DVD-compliant (very important) VOB, PrE from at least version 4 up to version 8, will Import those, with few issues. Unfortunately, most VHS/DVD decks do not create 100% DVD-compliant discs, due to how they handle the Menus and navigation. This then becomes a YMMV situation.
    Good luck,

  • H.264 MPEG 4 slow to scrub through.. What best to convert to?

I'm on a PC Intel i5 2500k, Geforce 560Ti, 20 gigs of ram, and I notice that while I can scrub footage off of a 60D just fine, when I import and try to scrub through video taken off my Toshiba Camileo, they are so slow. G spot says its H.264/MPEG-4 AVC. Wondering what best to transcode to to better work inside Premiere.

res is 1080. For sequence settigns, what i did was use dslr 1080, i figured thats what it is, so that would work fine. But on a hunch I took a clip off the 60d in a bin and dragged it down to the new item and it made a "custom" sequence with settings completely different than the one I started with. The original one had all the sequence settings locked. This new one made by dragging the clip gives options to set the preview file format and codecs. I imagine this will help if I set this properly, but I am confused which to set it to. I just tried a couple different ones and while the 60d footage in the sequence plays fine, if I drag the ones off the Camileo into the sequence and play, it plays fine for a few seconds then lags and catches up with itself.
Theres no effects ont he footage, this is a brand new project.
I have 4 total disks, but 2 are USb storage. The project files for this are on an internal.
This may sound stupid but it plays back better at full res than it does at 1/2 or even 1/4

  • MPEG-4 AVC/H.264

    Hello all,
I had a camera which records MPEG2, but it is broken. Now I want to buy a new camera which will record in AVCHD. Before I do this, I want to try to edit a MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 file in Adobe Premiere, see how it works on my PC.
Is there a place or site where I can download a sample MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 file. The content doesn't matter, as long as it is a file in the format I will get when having a AVCHD camera.
    Thanks in advance,
    Best Regards,
    André.

    hi guys,
I need to export a file in mp4 container with h264 compression. The result shows h.264/MPEG-4 AVC compression which is h.264, right? If I undestood it right h.264 and MPEG-4 AVC compression is the same thing, right? just wanted to be sure...
thanks and have a nice day!

I had already tried but not working
The video is ok with all the preset that match 720p ...but not the audio
...i think is a codec issue

Are you running the 9.0.1 Update of the program and on what computer operating system is it running?
Is your video card/graphics card driver up to date according to the manufacturer of the card?
Is your computer optimized, including maintenance of pile ups of preview files, conformed audio files, and conformed video files?
Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer with Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1?
What are your project settings and what are the properties of your source media? When you say that "used to be able to export...." is that on the same computer, same brand/model/settings for the camera recording the video now in use, same Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1?
Where player are you using for the playback of these exports?
Please give us more details on the size of the projects (then and now) as well as details of the customized export settings in your Share/Computer/ route. Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 is only a 32 bit application running in 32 bit or 64 bit system. Not sure if computer resources might be taxed more so now than before.
    More later.

  • I want to upgrade from Photoshop Elements 5 to Lightroom 5.  Can Lightroom 5 read/convert a Photoshop Elements 5 catalog, or is Elements 5 too old to read?

I want to upgrade from Photoshop Elements 5 to Lightroom 5.  Can Lightroom 5 read/convert a Photoshop Elements 5 catalog including all of the tags, captions, etc, or is Elements 5 too old for Lightroom 5 to read/convert?  What's the best way to migrate?  (My catalog has over 100k images in it.)

Adobe changed the catalog software from PSE6 onwards to the SQLite database – as used in Lightroom.
Earlier versions of PSE including PSE5 used a Microsoft Access database, stored in a file called [Catalog Name].psa.
If you have already embedded keywords and captions by writing file info into the images they should be readable even if catalog conversion fails. Lightroom does have the ability to import a PSE catalog but in view of the age of PSE5 I would recommend downloading the 30 day free trial of LR5.6 and then you can judge the level of success of catalog conversion.

  • Using Compressor to create H.264 MPEG-4

I am trying to make a H.264 MPEG-4 video file. In Compressor, I can see that I can make a H.264 .mov file or an MPEG-4 file that is not H.264.
Is it possible to make a H.264 file that is also MPEG-4? Is there any difference beween files that end in a .mov extension and those that end in a .mp4 extension if both are H.264?

I'm not familiar with older versions of compressor. I have 3.5.1, which is what I describe here.
In the templates when you open Compressor, or when you ask for "new batch from template ..." under the file menu, one of the templates is "Create web Reference Movie". I assume this is what you want.
If you choose this template, you have three options, Large, Medium, and Small web movie. Compressor will make all three unless you click on the - in the right side of the window for the ones you don't want.
Suppose you choose Small web movie. Drag the Icon for your movie into the box on the left with the down arrow. Click on Small web movie and you will get the Inspector window. What you first see in the Inspector is the Summary. There are five additional windows that you can get by clicking on the icons above the word Summary. The second icon is Encoder. The default is a H.264 mov file for Quicktime. You can change the file format in Encoder to MPEG-4. This will produce a movie with H.264 encoding with a mp4 extension.
In my experience compressor produces a smaller file with this option but not as sharp. Compressor also wants to do things like make an HTML file for your movie. This is covered somewhat here.

  • Why can't I read or write from my external hard drive?

Hey there, I recently borrowed my brother's laptop to use as a media station for listening to music from, and watching movies, in order to free up some space on my main macbook.  In trying to migrate some files over, I discovered that my hard drive, a 320 GB WD Elements drive, is having some problems which I've never encountered before.  It has always worked fine in the past, but now I can't transfer any files to or from it, from either computer.  In all of my troubleshooting, I've gotten various errors, (-36, -50), and various messages saying how the device can't be read or written from, or how some files contian unreadable data, etc.
Disk Utility found an unused node when verifying the disk, and notified me that the disk needed to be repaired.  I then used Disk Utility, which said it was able to successfully repair it, but the same problem remains, and after verifying the disk, it still says it needs to be repaired.  I've tried to find any files that may be causing the problem, and was finally able to delete a seemingly troublesome file that was stuck in my trash bin from the external drive after trying various apps, (ie Trash It, Cocktail, What's Keeping Me?).  This didn't end up solving anything...I've used terminal to eliminate some other potentially problematic files, with no luck still, and I'm not too confident with Terminal so I don't want to be messing around too much without more guidance.
Most recently, I've used Disk Warrior to try to solve the problem, but still with no success.  When I use the app to Check All Files and Folders, it does so for only a few seconds, then reports that "An unexpected error ocurred while attempting to perform file operations" for several files, and that several files' "Property list is damaged and cannot be repaired".  When using Disk Warrior to REBUILD the drive, the app pauses for about 15 seconds, then says that it can't be rebuilt because it is in use.  Again, I've used the What's Keeping Me? app to kill any activity with the drive, and the same error occurs.
I've spent a lot of time trying to sort this out...It's very frustrating, and I have a lot of files that mean a lot to me on my drive, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks a lot!
    Ryan

I have this problem too with my Western Digital 1TB My Passport for Mac.
Downloaded Card Data Recovery - did not work. The software self terminated itself when the problematic WD is connected. Starts up fine when the WD is not connected by USB.
Then I downloaded Remo Recovery. Starts up fine, scans fine and appears to save the files but ALL the files 'saved' are unreadable.
Finally, downloaded Stellar Phoenix in a last ditch attempt to recover my precious video files. Starts fine, saves fine BUT it cannot save files above 200MB because the WD stops working every 10 minutes. So, did not solve my problem totally because I have so many files above 200MB.
And yes, I PAID for all the software above. And the first two software are reluctant to refund me my money until their development team can ascertain whether it's a software bug, over online web conference. And because of the time differences, I can never get online with them. So, all my money gone.
Until one day I opened Activity Monitor and noticed this 'fsck_hfs' starting up everytime I connected the problematic WD My Passport for Mac.
So, tried to Force Quit 'fsck_hfs' and VOILA!
A dialogue box popped up and says that the Passport for Mac cannot be repaired and that I can move and copy files from it but not save to it.
    PHEW!!
At least I can access the files and save them to my Seagate 1TB although now I am having a problem opening FCP X project files rescued from the WD.

  • Help with "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "iPhoto Library" can't be read or written. (Error code -36)" Any ideas on how to fix this?

While trying to copy my iPhoto Library (49.61 GB) to an external hard drive, I receive the error message "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “iPhoto Library” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)"
I need to move my library because I have no more disk space.  This was going to be step 1 followed by backing up to another EHD.
More details: iPhoto version 9.6 (910.29) OX X Yosemite Version 10.10.1 (Mid 2011 Mac Book Air).  EHD= WD Elements 1 TB (purchased at B&H Photo where the sales associate formatted it for a Mac).
Any step by step ideas for help are appreciated!  I've read through a few threads but need more step by step directions.

That error message is an I/O error which can mean a number of things, among them a bad file.  Here's a couple of fixes you can try:
1 - use the free version of  iPhoto Library Manager  to rebuild the library with the rebuild being created on the  EHD as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
When iPLM finishes it will display a log file entry showing which files it was unable to use in the rebuild.  Open the old library with iPhoto, locate and delete the photos that iPLM listed in its log.  Then try dragging the library to the EHD again.
If the above fails continue with:
2 - create a new, empty library on the EHD.  Use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manage to copy the events (1-2 at a time) to the new library on the EHD.  At one point iPLM may run into the bad file and be unable to copy the event.  You can check iPLM's log to see what file it is.  Then open that library, delete the file and either try to copy the entire library by dragging and dropping or contine with the copying of events from the old library to the new library.

The ipad won't sync some photos, saying the file can't be read by the ipad, however it will sync some photos taken at the same time which are the same size and file type.  Why does it reject some and accept others?

Hi there. I'm having the same problem: my iPad won't import some photos from a folder, saying that they can't be read. They are all JPEGS and some photos taken at the same time have synched fine, but out of a folder with 200 photos, it only lets me synch 37. I'm synching albums created via Photoshop Elements 6, which has worked fine until now.
I've tried deleting all photos and re-synching, and have also deleted the iPod Photo Cache, but it hasn't made a difference.
The iPad auto-updated to the latest version of iTunes, so maybe that's what's causing it?
    Any advice gratefully received!

  • After Effects CC 2014 - removal of H.264, MPEG-2, WMV, FLV, F4V, and SWF exporters - WHY !?

While reading the features of AfterEffects CC2014, I noticed the following:
"removal of H.264, MPEG-2, WMV, FLV, F4V, and SWF exporters from After Effects"
    THAT IS IS REDICULOUS!!
    NO FLV !?!?
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT USERS TO IMPORT INTO FLASH ??
IF no FLV export is available under After Effects CC 2014, there is NO WAY to EMBED an flv into flash !! (Linking is NOT always what is wanted!!)
    NO H264 !?!?!
    HAVE YOU GONE CRAZY ?!!?!?
    YOU BREAK WORKFLOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    THAT IS REDICULOUS!!!
Any chance of restoring such features so that it makes updating to it worthwhile ?

To date I've primarily been a Photoshop user and have dealt with years of mystifying UX and workflow changes, features that are useless to me added, and critical ones taken away (I'm looking at you Bridge, you worthless piece of garbage).  Then, to add insult to injury, Adobe forum mods telling me I'm doing it wrong and should be jumping through more hoops to achieve the same results. Now, with AE becoming a bigger part of my work, I am sad to find, that the same culture of disconnected arrogance and myopia prevails on the AE dev team.
"Oh um user, you really want to be going through AME, because um technically speaking there have been many problems with the H.264 and MPEG-2 exporters in After Effects"
Oh really? Tell me more about my job. Tell me about my experiences exporting these formats directly from AE. Tell me how my client views my content, is it on a Mac, or a PC? Maybe it's on his phone, or her iPad. What kind of phone is it though? Tell me at what point in my process it's ideal to render. Tell me about other tasks I'm performing. Tell me about the resolution and the bit-rate my files should play at. Tell me the final application I will be using the footage. Probably broadcast right? Or is it web? Or is it PowerPoint? Wait, what if there is no final output? What if it's just pre-vis for some other application?
Tell me how to win over my clients; what's the correct method of presentation to engage them most impactfully? Tell me about how much time I have to render massive video files. Is it more time efficient due to the nature of my composite to render once because my file is super shallow and will render quickly or is it more efficient to render twice because my file is extremely complex with hundreds of layers?
That the deprecated formats were hidden away in the preferences menu is dumb and annoying. That this same preference would then be removed is despicable and petty and is further confirmation that Adobe has contempt for me as a user.
