Can PS Element catalog files .psa be read?

I have PSE 5.0 and used it to calalog my pics. I like it, but it is so slow on startup so that I thought Album Starter Edition might be good for me to view my pictures.
If I try to open the .psa catalog file created with Elements, however, I receive the message "unable to open catalog named ... because the file is incompatible".
Do they really have incompatible .psa files for Elements and Album??? Any help appreciated.

Unfortunately you cannot open PSE5 catalog in Starter Edition. One reason that I can think of is that PSE5 catalog is much more complicated than PSASE. PSE5 catalog contains RAW files, Creations etc which PSASE does not support.

I upgraded to Lion and now can't print PDF files and Acrobat reader doesn't work anymore. What can I do to get it working?

If you upgraded and were using a version of Acrobat Reader that was legacy, that is PPC compatible, then you will have to upgrade to a version compatible with Lion as Lion no longer has Rosetta to interface with the legacy software.
I know that Acrobat, full version, 10 works with Lion...use it myself.

  • Moving existing and future catalog files (.psa) to another HD partition? (WIN-XP-Elmnts5.0)

Does anyone know how I can tell Elements 5.0 to move all files it is creating and using, from my C: partition to my D: partition? I don't want Elements using the C: drive partition for anything (especially catalogs, thumbnails, etc...).
I have already (I think?) set the default new-catalog location to the D: drive, but I want to move the existing (and huge!) "My Catalog.psa" and everything related to it, to the D: drive where the new default catalog location is.
Is there a way to do this easily? I just completed a full (initial) backup, and moved 75% of my photos offline, so all I need to do is move the catalog files associated with them. (For reference, the photos themselves are stored on the E: partition, or DVD, not on the C: or D: drives).
    THANKS!
    Eric

    first I would suggest a
    File > Catalog > Recover
on that huge My Catalog.psa because it will cleanup and compact that catalog file.
Based on a forum tip from another participant, I used SAVE AS under the File > Catalog dialog to achieve placing a catalog and its associated Catalog Folders folder (which contains thumbnail cache and offline proxies) to a different hard drive.
During this Save AS process, I gave my Catalog a different name because I thought that it was a safer approach. The Title bar of the Organizer workspace shows the Catalog name - so I like definitively knowing what catalog I am referencing based on the catalog name.
I do recommend using a different name for the catalog when using this process.
FYI - I think that you will need to do a new Full PSE Backup after you have this newly named Catalog functioning OK on the new drive - because a PSE Backup is Catalog specific.
FYI- If you ever use the PSE File > Catalog > Open dialog, it will not not initially show this new catalog on the other drive. You must navigate yourself to the drive/folder containing your catalog and then it will work. It appears to initially only list catalogs in the default location: no big deal but disconcerting if you expect it to be present in the list and it is not.
You will still have Preferences under the user's Doc and Settings and of course, the Program Files folder structure.

  • Catalog Files *.PSA

Is there a way to tell PS Album to store its *.PSA catalog files in a particular subdirectory? Traditionally I've kept all my personal files in a subdirectory tree that makes it easy to backup all critical stuff. If apps scatter files all over the machine it makes it harder. I used to be able to do this with earlier versions of Album, but 3.2 doesn't seem to allow it.
Or I haven't figured it out anyhow.
    Thanks.
    Bill

    Hi Bill,
The .psa catalog path cannot be changed in Photoshop Album Starter Edition. This is possible in Photoshop Elements where you can create catalogs at custom locations.

  • Can't view PDF files using Acrobat Reader X

We made many PDF files available on our Web site. In the past few weeks we noticed that users who were using Acrobat Reader X and Internet Explorer 8 or 9 were not able to view some PDF files. Basically, when they clicked a link to display a PDF file, the screen would be cleared and the status bar showing "Loading ...KB/...K/B" would be displayed. The status bar would move a bit and then got stuck. The PDF file would never be displayed. Sometimes, my users could click the Back button to go back the previous Web page and sometimes they had to close or kill the IE window. Small PDF files seemed to be fine. I was able to repeat this problem on PCs running Windows XP and Windows 7. I also tested clicking the same PDF files with PCs installed with Acrobat Reader 9 and I was not able to cause the problem to occur, so I am pretty sure that this problem is related to Acrobat Reader X. I also noticed that if I unchecked the "Display PDF in browser"  option in Acrobat Reader X so that PDF files would not be displayed inside the Internet Explorer window, I would be able to view all PDF files without any problems.
I also did an experiment by resaving many PDF files using Acrobat Pro (Reduce File Size...) to be compatible with Acrobat 8 or above. I was able to open these PDF files using Acrobat Reader X but when I used a PC with Acrobat 9, it would get stuck instead. Most of my PDF files were created a long time ago and we usually made it compatible with Acrobat 5 or above.
I saw that some people reported some problems with Acrobat Reader X but I did not see a solution except uninstalling Acrobat Reader X and installing an old version of Acrobat Reader instead. Anyone has any ideas why this is happening and how to fix this problem?

Sounds like you got the trial of Acrobat. Go to add/remove programs, get rid of it, the download the free Reader from http://get.adobe.com/reader/

You're not giving us enough information to be able to help you... Start with:

    - Which version of Reader you're using
    - Which OS you're using
    - Does it happen with just a certain file, or all of them

  • Can't open unlocked file I have read & write privileges for

My nephew emailed me an RTF (created using iWork Pages on a Mac running 10.5.8). When I try to open it, I get "The document “x.rtf” could not be opened. You do not have appropriate access privileges."
Get Info shows the file isn't locked, plus:
    You have custom access
    dp (Me)  Read & Write
    (unknown) Read only
    everyone Read only
His parents use Parental Controls, so I thought I might be encountering an ACL problem. But the Terminal command "chmod -a# 0 x.rtf" yields "No ACL present".
I tried changing the privileges for "everyone" to Read & Write but -- as I expected -- it makes no difference. (OSX won't let me change the privileges for "unknown.")
For that matter, he attached 2 other files as well -- they behave the same ways.
It's useless to try fixing the problem on his end unless I can provide his parents with super-simple step-by-step directions, so I'd prefer to fix it myself if possible, but I'm stumped as to what's wrong.

According to http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/permissions.html, in the case of directories, the execute bit controls whether they may be traversed. So it's normal for this bit to be set for a directory.
To clarify where I'm at now: ls -l for the directory containing the file shows
    drwxrwxrwx   9 dp  dp         306 Jun 17 20:33 x.rtf
and CDing to the file itself shows
    drwxrwxrwx  3 dp  dp    102 Jun 15 17:17 Contents
    -rw-rw-rw-  1 dp  dp  10156 Apr 17 22:45 H4835.jpg
    drwxrwxrwx  3 dp  dp    102 Jun 15 17:17 QuickLook
    -rw-rw-rw-  1 dp  dp   8363 Jun 15 17:17 imgres.jpg
    -rw-rw-rw-  1 dp  dp  31077 Jun 15 17:17 index.xml.gz
    -rw-rw-rw-  1 dp  dp  47231 Apr 17 19:01 macbookair.jpg
    -rw-rw-rw-  1 dp  dp  36191 Apr 17 21:14 unknown.jpg
Get Info still says I have "custom access" to the RTF. Get Info for each file and directory (and their contents) it contains, however, says "You can read and write." I've searched the web and our KB but find very little about exactly what "custom access" means. As near as I can tell, it should mean it has an ACL, but as I reported earlier, that's apparently not so.

  • How do I create PDF so that user can insert a placed file using Acrobat Reader

I have just upgraded to CS4 which has Adobe Acrobat Pro. I am creating PDF's within Pro, adding text fields and buttons for customers to access and fill in using Adobe Reader. This has worked great but I would also like to add a box with text saying 'insert logo here' and when the customer clicks on it then searches their system for the logo, selects and places within the PDF. Can anyone help me on this one?

  • Import adobe photoshop elements catalog

I have migrated from PC Windows to iMac. I am wanting to convert my catalog file containing all tags of all images & photos that I used to store on PC. I have used Adobe Photoshop Elements thusfar to build catalogs, but Adobe does not support this freeware any longer. Is there a way to convert the Adobe catalog file (*.psa) into iPhoto or other Mac supported picture manager?

Bummer that it did not work as advertised. I think there are other threads on the same subject. Try search with words like Elements, keywords, tags, transfer, etc and see if you get anything useful. If you don't like searching just scan the lists back 6 months or so. Don't remember this being an issue in last 2 months. There is also the knowledgebase search, which I did not try.
One other thought before you do the above. Go to Edit>Preferences>Thumbnails (Bridge) and make sure there is a checkmark for "Keywords" in Details - additional lines of Metadata to add.

  • Can't open CR2 files in CS3 after recovery from memory card deletion

I accidentally deleted some photos from a memory card. I recovered them using software called "Recover My Files". This software recovered the files but now I can't open them in CS3. I took these with an old Canon Rebel DSLR and they should not need converting, they opened fine before I deleted them. Any advice much appreciated. I really need these photos. Thanks.

Thanks, I ended up doing another recovery with PhotoRec freeware, it worked and I got all of the photos back. A bit tedious to use but free. I  must have downloaded five or  six recovery softwares but a lot of them can't retrieve raw files very well.

  • I want to upgrade from Photoshop Elements 5 to Lightroom 5.  Can Lightroom 5 read/convert a Photoshop Elements 5 catalog, or is Elements 5 too old to read?

I want to upgrade from Photoshop Elements 5 to Lightroom 5.  Can Lightroom 5 read/convert a Photoshop Elements 5 catalog including all of the tags, captions, etc, or is Elements 5 too old for Lightroom 5 to read/convert?  What's the best way to migrate?  (My catalog has over 100k images in it.)

Adobe changed the catalog software from PSE6 onwards to the SQLite database – as used in Lightroom.
Earlier versions of PSE including PSE5 used a Microsoft Access database, stored in a file called [Catalog Name].psa.
If you have already embedded keywords and captions by writing file info into the images they should be readable even if catalog conversion fails. Lightroom does have the ability to import a PSE catalog but in view of the age of PSE5 I would recommend downloading the 30 day free trial of LR5.6 and then you can judge the level of success of catalog conversion.

  • Can Premiere Elements read .vob files?

I have some .vob files that I generated from an old VHS tape.  I want to convert them to mpg or some other format so I can edit them and post them on the web.  Can Premiere Elements do this?
    Thanks!

If you used a VHS/DVD deck, you may have an issue with the first VOB, because it will also contain Menus and navigation instructions, plus the first part of the MPEG-2 AV file. This ARTICLE will give you some background. With a 100% DVD-compliant (very important) VOB, PrE from at least version 4 up to version 8, will Import those, with few issues. Unfortunately, most VHS/DVD decks do not create 100% DVD-compliant discs, due to how they handle the Menus and navigation. This then becomes a YMMV situation.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
