Can quicktime play an video track with multiple alternate audio tracks?

Hi,
If I have a video track with multiple alternate audio tracks (say different languages), can a user select the audio track of his choice and play in Quick time?
Thanks,
Apurva

Does quick time/ safari have this capability?
QT (i.e., the QT structure embeded in current Mac OS/device IOS versions) has the ability to switch between alternative audio tracks assuming the file is properly encoded and the compression format is supported. QT 7, QT X, iTunes, and similar app player GUIs can switch between such tracks during playback but the QT plug-in cannot. In a similar manner, devices like TV can switch between such tracks but an iPhone cannot just as an iPhone can select "Chapters" but the QT browser plug-in cannot but an iPhone file programmed with both chapters and alternate audio tracks can be played back through a TV device and access both chapters and alternative audio tracks.
What I want to use is one video track with alternate audio tracks in a set level manifest and play this using HTTP Live streaming. I'm using the manifest mentioned here :
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-pantos-http-live-streaming-07#section-8.7
Since I do not use playlists, I am not familiar with the approach in your example. If I want alternate audio and/or video tracks, I create standalone video files with these features built in. Nor do I use RTSP if that is what you mean by "live streaming" of content. If I want to "stream" the content, I use "Fast Start" files programmed to open in the QT player app which supports these features or create reference or QT Media Link files that do the same thing.
As you mentioned, Safari on my iPhone is playing the default/first alternate audio track mentioned but not giving an option to switch tracks.
Neither Safari nor the Video app GUIs on your iPhone have a built in switching option. The only way to switch to alternate audio tracks is to do so with QT 7 Pro or possibly iTunes before loading or streaming the video file. (Am still speaking about a standalone file here and not a programmed playlist/RTSP switch.)
However Quick time on my Mac machine only plays the audio with the the video stream and not the alternate audio track.
The QT player app GUI only switches between tracks that are stored as part of the standalone file. Basically, QT files may contain up to 99 individual data tracks. In alternative audio videos, multiple audio tracks are added to the file by an editor like QT 7 Pro but only one track is designated as "active." All other tracks are designated as "inactive." The QT player GUI allows the viewer to select which audio track he or she wants to hear and then turns off the current audio track and turns on the selected audio track. Otherwise all active tracks would play simultaneously.
Is there a way to switch tracks on my iPhone on Safari?
As previously noted, the default track can be manually changed by QT 7 Pro or, I believe, iTunes (used to have this capability) before actually loading or streaming content.
Does quicktime have this capability?
As far as I know, only with regard to stand alone files programmed with multiple alternate tracks. I am not a HTML, HTML5, or Java programmer so I assume there may be web alternatives here but they would be beyond the scope of my expertise.
Do you know any free player that can do this?
Again, I don't use either playlists or RTSP so I've never had a need to look for/use alternative players that might meet your needs. I simply find it easier to build files that work correctly in current player app/device GUIs already having these capabilities.
Or the very last option, can I build a player to do this? If yes can you suggest where/how I start?
Once again, I assume this might be possible but not part of my experience since, for my part, easier work flows are available.

Why does Quicktime tell me it can't play certain videos created with my Phantom 2 v3 drone ? I fly the drone and switch back and forth from video to still pics and while I may have filmed four videos , sometimes Quicktime tells me that one of them can't be played . Checking the info shows that each of the unplayed videos was saved in the same mp4 format as the playable ones yet some of my most important videos won't play . It's getting very frustrating .

first; I use Perian, that helps even though it is no longer supported, (must have for avi files)
the apple-cores at apple have gotten very sloppy -- quicktime is a bit finicky and flakey.
example,   occasionally (when copy file from quad's card to hard drive)  the avi will show up as a 'mov' file and qt plays it no problem and no conversion.
but that is very occasionally,  most of the time qt won't convert the file,   -- iMovie won't open an avi without Perian installed  ,  I don't know how that effects qt.
qt 7"pro" is no good either, (qt 10 does everything it does and for NOT the extra $35)
I have gone to VLC  and MPlayerX  for direct playback for drones and cameras.

  • Multiple video tracks with the same audio track

How do I get DVDSP to play the same audio track on 3 different video tracks without having to repeat the audio on each of the 3 video trax?
Seems simple, but I can't find an easy way to do it.
    Anybody got any ideas?

Yes they are all one continuous stream with the same GOP structure and everything. I had to export them as QT movies from FCP to get them all the same. I only exported the video though becuase the audio was going to be the same for all the tracks, & it was already done as AC3 through Compressor. Which brings up an interesting question; why does DVDSP convert the AC3 audio to .aiff which is a much larger format?
I'm trying to go back and look at the encoding log from DVDSP to see what error it gave.
It doesn't give the error in the log since I had shut down my computer last night, so I guess I'll have to try the build again and see what error it gives.
I'm looking at the parsing files and .m2v files that DVDSP did during the build, and it parsed all 3 angles, and finished the .m2v file of the medium shot, including 6 minutes past the point I told DVDSP to stop it. (When exporting the QT movie from FCP, I had forgotton and encoded the whole 2:30:00 show instead of the 1st 1/2 of 1:16:47:15, and then just adjusted the end of the clip in DVDSP).
The wide shot and Close up .m2v files, and the audio .aiff file were in the folder, but have nothing in them. The Video_TS folder and Audio_TS folder are also there, but with nothing in them, so whatever happened, seems to have happened in the medium shot encoding process.
I'm pretty much over this multi-angle thing, and I'm going to start working on an edited version of this today because all I have to do is make the cuts between cameras, since the audio is already mixed. However, if you have any other ideas, please let me know.

  • Can't play .tod video files with QuickTime X and Lion

I have a JVC Everio videocamera that generates .tod files in HD. With MacOs Leopard and QuickTime 7 I had to install the Everio component for QuickTime and it worked, so I could watch the videos in QuickTime and import them to iMovie HD. But with QuickTime X and MacOs Lion I cannot do any of those, and I cannot even install the Everio component. If I change the extension from .tod to .mpeg, QuickTime can reproduce it, but I cannot import the file either to iMovie HD or to iMovie of Lion.
Any suggestion?? I would rather prefer not to have to convert the files before importing due to time spent and to possible loss of quality.

.TOD is as you imply a JVC video format. It contains MPEG2 video and MPEG1 audio which makes it similar but not identical to what might be on a DVD.
MPEG Streamclip for Mac (free) can read .TOD files and save them to other formats, including more standard MPEG2 formats. However in this case MPEG Streamclip is still going to require the chargeable Apple MPEG2 QuickTime Component. Using MPEG Streamclip to convert to say a standard .m2v and .m1a pair of files would not lose any quality as you are merely changing the container and not the video and audio, if you changed to H.264 then you would potentially lose some quality.
It is still possible to install QuickTime 7 on Lion and QuickTime 7 will work with older style QuickTime components, possible including the JVC TOD one. You need to download and install QuickTime 7 from here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
This link may also be of use http://www2.cli.co.jp/products/ne/update_qtc_for_gzhd7/qtc3e_update.htm
Note: If the JVC QuickTime component is only written for PowerPC chips it will never work on a Mac running Lion, in view of the apparent considerable age of Everio cameras this seems likely.

  • Can I make a PDF file with multiple embedded audio files?

Can basic viewers that receive the PDF via email listen? Every file I have made excluded the audio... ibooks worked and interactive Adobe but not everyone has those programs. This is for an EPK electronic press kit (country music artist)
    Thanks for the help!

It's a total crap shoot (as our good friend Bob Levine would say). Some PDF readers handle multimedia well (Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat), and some do not (e.g., Apple Preview, PDF readers in browsers, etc.)
Unless you're willing to provide a link to the free Adobe Reader, and recommend that people download it, it's probably not worth the effort.

I also have Jolly's problem. I found the iMovie 9.0.9 folder and tried to launch the older version of iMove. It would not launch. I removed all of the iMovie preferences from the Preferences folder, removed iMove 10 from the applications folder, and restarted my Mac. iMove 9.0.9 still won't launch and I can't access my videos created with the older version of iMovie. Is there a way to uninstall iMovie 10 and reinstall iMovie 9.0.9?

  • Can one video track play with 9 different audio tracks?

If we create a dvd with a 20 mins voiceover video in 6 chapters, but there were 9 language versions inc English, could we use the same video track, playing with a different audio track for each language, to save space?

Almost. You have have 8 audio streams (AS) so you'd need to have 2 tracks and split the audio across them. So you could have Track 1 8x AS and Track 2 1x AS. T1 5x AS & T2 4x AS. You get the idea...
You dont need 1 Track per Track but you will need at least two. Keep an eye on your total bandwith for each track also. Remember to budget for the audio before you encode,

  • Quicktime Pro 7.2 Can't Play Lynda Videos Chris Orvig

    Hi,
I can't play Lynda videos from "Photoshop CS3 for Photographers" with
    Chris Orvig.
They all have the .mov extension. Quicktime Pro gives an error msg,
"error -2048 Couldn't open the file <XXXXXFILENAMEXXXXX> because it is
not a file that Quicktime understands".
I tried Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic from K-Lite, but
    neither can play it either.
All my other videos are playing ok. After the error I installed every
codec from K-Lite Codec Pack Full.
    It's still not working.
How do I fix this, where do I find a patch?
I've sent an email to Lynda technical support.
    Windows XP Pro SP2
    Quicktime Pro 7.2
K-lite Codec Pack Full - All Codecs Installed
    Windows Media Player 9

I can also verify this (QT Pro 7.2 exporting to .mp4 not compatible
with video iPod [firmware 1.2.1 on both 5G/5.5G units]).
This results in the unusual situation where custom H.264 output
is operable on the iPhone but not the iPod.
    Example: your iPhone should play
    http://homepage.mac.com/retiarius/sample.elements.mp4
but it won't transfer to a video iPod.
Yes, the workaround is to 'export for iPod' or do the conversion
within 'iTunes', but this in many circumstances will generate
    larger files.
The closest description of this situation is:
    http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/ffmpeg-devel/2006-September/015930.html
Perhaps Apple will release a video iPod firmware update soon
to get the 'uuid' atoms and whatever watermarking they are
    using these days straightened out.
I'm surprised this hasn't been noticed more by video podcasters
who dutifully use Apple's own QT Pro encoding tool to optimize
filesizes via the tunable H.264/.mp4 codec settings.

  • Can't export quicktime with 5.1 audio track - help

I have a very unusual problem that I am running into.
A festival has asked for a Pro Res Screener vs a DCP like I am used to with a 5.1 audio mix.
No problem I figure, I grab the 6 individual audio tracks from our sound guy, mastered as 5.1 L,R,C,LF,SL,SR.
I create a new sequence, lay in my Video track and the 6 audio tracks from track 1 - 6 in the same order as above.
I setup my sequence the first time to be a 5.1 sequence, with 5.1 tracks.
I set each track according to it's placement with the little 5.1 diagram in each track.
I export using pro res, and set the audio to 5.1, L,R,C,LF,SL,SR
I figure at this point all should be good. I bring the renderd file back into premiere to check the file and create a new sequence directly from the new file.
I get 1 video track with a 5.1 audio track.
This is where things get weird. There are 5 channels in the track, however the left and right tracks have a mixture of L,R,and C, there is no audio in the C track, no audio in the LF track, very slight audio in the SL track and no audio in the SR track.
    What is going on?
I have tried exporting this now about 10 different ways. Figuring that the audio tracks were all mono tracks I tried to set them up as individual mono tracks 1-6 and I just end up with a 5.1 track that has mixed L,R and no audio in any of the different channels.
I've searched the web and I'm going crazy with this. i'm about to send the project off to have it digitally mastered by someone else. this is quite ridiculous.
Has anyone experienced this problem before? I figure I have to be setting up something wrong? but what? how come there are no 5.1 templates in premiere to work from?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. I really hate to send this project off to someone else for such a seemingly simple task. Seriously, this is making DCP creation like a walk in the park!

Richard, thank you so much for that link. That seems to have done the trick, at least 95%. I have successfully routed all tracks to a single 5.1 file that can now be successfully exported... however, even after following his invert track trick, I am still getting nothing in my LFE track. How on earth do you rout that LFE track? Has it changed in premiere CC 2014?

  • Choosing audio track in a multi audio track video (Quicktime or WMV)

    Morning all,
Quicktime and Windows Media support multiple audio tracks in
a single .mov or .wmv file. I have a couple .mov's and .wmv's with
4 different audio tracks in each one (such a space saver). On my
menu in director, i have 4 buttons which point to the same video.
how do i have it so that if i press "audio 1" button the video will
play with the first audio channel from the video..., or if i press
"audio 2" button the second audio channel will play, etc etc.
Think of a DVD with multiple language tracks, but instead
    it's a quicktime/wmv file.
I tried using the setTrackEnable but no matter which button I
choose, it's always the first audio track in the video. maybe I'm
scripting it wrong? Here is the codes I've tried
chances are i did this all wrong...but why not
    on mouseup me
    sprite(5).setTrackEnabled(2, false)
    sprite(5).setTrackEnabled(3, true)
    sprite(5).setTrackEnabled(4, false)
    sprite(5).setTrackEnabled(5, false)
    end
(note: for each language, I change from true to false)
    I've also tried
    on mouseup me
    sprite(5).setTrackEnabled(X, true)
    end
    Where X is replaced with a track number (ie 2, 3, 4...)
Any ideas? I can use either Quicktime or Windows Media, so a
code for either would work for me.

Unless you've created an archive iDVD project file the audio is only linked to the project from wherever you kept the files when creating the project.

  • I can't play certain videos from the internet on my macbook

I can't play certain videos from the internet on my macbook.
When using Sarfari or Google Chome, I am unable to play some videos on the internet. News clips, posted videos on blogs, and tv episodes from their own network websites. Youtube videos are fine. I doesn't make sense.
I tried downloading an update for quicktime, but the computer claims that quicktime is up to date. Yet, the videos and tv episodes don't play.
I have checked for the most recent software updates, and everything is up to date. Nothing is wrong with the hardware either.
Any suggestions would be awesome! Thank you!

In addition to Flash, you might need some other plugins.  Microsoft videos are mostly in Silverlight, and you'll want Flip4Mac to play WMVs.  Perian contains codecs for pretty much every video online.

    Hello,
I want to play encrypted mp4 video in my app.
How can i play encrypted video in iphone app?

Thanks for your assistance. Unfortunately I'm still not able to get this to work.
First, I don't see an export to Quicktime in AppleTV format setting. The only choices that I have are export to Quicktime in Full, CD, email or streaming video format.
I tried both full and CD but I still cannot get it to my AppleTV. Once the video is in Quicktime format I drag and drop the file into my iTunes library. It shows up in the movies directory on Itunes but when I sync Itunes with Apple TV - nothing. Everything else syncs but just not the quicktime movie.
    Any ideas?
