Can renaming multiple times degrade a photo?

Is there any chance that I might lose photo quality by renaming photos several different times (JPGs, NEFs or TIFFs) or by adding more keywords (using Bridge or any other browser) with either individual or batch renaming - without making any edits or other changes to the photo? Would this affect the photo's actual appearance in any way? You don't actually "save" your photos, for example, with Bridge, but perhaps clicking on the "Rename" button is actually the way the changes are saved. Anyway, I know that there is data loss if you save JPGs more than once, so I am just wondering if renaming would also cause data loss and thereby degrade photo quality. Also, what about renaming from the Finder on the Mac? Thanks, Linda

No, I'm not opening the photos in an editing program or saving them. I'm simply renaming them, usually batch renaming to save time. But I have noticed when I rename RAW NEF files (using Adobe Bridge) that it creates a sidecar, so I'm wondering how the name change is stored for a JPG. Since you lose data each time you save a JPG, I am wondering if you lose data by renaming.

Issue 1 Bridge does not open. If you click on the application multiple times in trying to get it to load... it shows the app multiple times in the TASK BAR Manager.

Sounds like you may need to restart the computer Braswels.
Try that and see if it resolves the issue.

Can't set times or edit photos

Hi all.
I am havig an issue with iMovie HD6.0.3 I am currently running on a fresh 10.4.8 install and the apple apps are the only ones installed at the moment. no codecs, flip for mac or plug-ins etc-.. the movie has been moved into the movie folder from an external hard drive via fw400.
Regardless of how the photo is imported, drag from finder, iphoto list in iMovie, "apply" i cannot control the time. The latest default on import regardless of settings comes in with 00:02 time settings and no ken burns effect. I am unable to do anything with them. Any changes results in a 09:29 time setting and any undo of the changes result in the loss of the ability to edit these photos (I have not emptied the trash)

Once upon a time the slider was the method around the madness but now there is even more madness to this method as it no longer works. I am very familiar with this long-standing issue. -.. and what it could lead to.

It seems to me, by reading some of your other posts, you may be a bit familiar with iMovie/OS X below the GUI and maybe even beyond the scripts and strings. Am I correct in that assumption? And if so is this something you care to assist someone with? As I read the various posts and rummage through iMovie's and QT Pro's "framework" it seems that a lot of issues that appear, on the surface, to be unrelated indeed are and it seems to occur within the various communications pertaining to the all new media browser and other iM frameworks permeating throughout the OS, iLife and iWork suite of products.
One question I can't seem to find the answer to is if I am correct in assuming that in the second line below, the between values appear to me to be identical (= and not<) I get this error message quite often even when input is within this range regardless of how it is set (slider or textbox) and the message displays 00:03 and 60:00 when the dialogue appears on the screen. I am aware that this is a script for displaying an error message but it has to be compared somewhere as it produces a calculated or called value and I haven't figured out exactly where all these places are-.. yet.

One other thing I have noticed as well is that QT (stand alone and iM frameworks) uses a decimal point in the frame count calculation and it's references appear to be easy to locate throughout always referring to time 00:00:00:00.00 (hr:mn:sd:fr.fr) (%d: like not zeros) where iMovie is typically 00:00 (sd:fr) (again written in gibber) I have not located anything indicating a maximum of a 60 min movie in iM but because of the time parameters that are listed above-.. and then when this post popped up

which again lead me right back into the Frameworks of iMovie and I noted the time at which it hung and it made me even more suspicious. Then at second glance I realized that according to this dialogue it appears to be iM is referring to 60 what? seconds and frames? yet could only really be 59.29. sd:fr, 59:59 mn:sd. So am I really just a fruit off the vine or do I make any sense? The 24 hour clock doesn't use 60 anywhere. 60 could only be used as a tenth or a fraction of a frame.
And then there are posts like this for which I can replicate things that would appear to cause this.

Note the timeline on the **** right in the below link the clip duration and the duration of the previous clip which you can see is below the min 00:03. Aside from extended durations there are also those who lose the last few seconds or so and am wondering if it has to do with the fact that iM simply does not calculate properly nor does it read the last frame. Select any clip and play or go to the end of the timeline to see.

Credit Card Charged Multiple Times When Ordering Photo Book

I had difficulty ordering a photo book. After reading through your support pages I figured out how to do it after trying 8 times - it kept crashing. Today, I look at my credit card statement and i've been charged 8 times even though it only went through the one time and I only have 1 confirmation number. What do I do? Who do I contact?

Can't print a photo multiple times on a single page

I just installed iLife 8 and am trying to print one 3X5 photo multiple times on a single page. When I consulted the help menu in iPhoto, I found what I thought was the answer. When I followed the instructions, I hit a snag because I don't have the Photos Per Page pop-up menu it references. Any ideas on how I can do this to save paper?
Here's what the help menu said:
Printing one photo multiple times on a single page
If you have a favorite photo you want to share with many people, you can print multiple copies of that photo on a single page.
To print one photo multiple times on a single page
Select the photo you want to print.
Click the Print button.
Select the paper size (such as letter-size or legal-size).
Select the print size (such as 2 x 3 or 4 x 6).
If you want to make the photo a custom size, select Custom.
Click the Customize button.
Click the Settings button.
Select “Multiple of the same photo per page” from the Photos Per Page pop-up menu.
iPhoto will zoom and crop the photo to fit the space available. To make a photo appear full-frame, Control-click the photo and choose “Fit Photo to Frame Size” from the menu that appears.
Click OK.
Click Print.

Well don't I feel stupid! I just installed iLife '08 and assumed that it would tell me right away if I needed any updates. I found and installed the needed updates (7.1.1), I got the right settings drop down menu to print multiples on one page. Thanks for your help

I am trying to rename my time capsule, how can this be done? do I have to perform a reset and if so soft, hard etc.

If you are able to access the Time Capsule using AirPort Utility, you can rename the Time Capsule as follows:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility 6.0
Click on the Time Capsule icon
Click Edit
Click the Base Station tab at the top of the window
Edit the Base Station Name as you wish
Enter the Base Station password...(.if you want to change it)
Verify password
Click Update at the lower right and the Time Capsule will restart in 25-30 seconds with your new settings.
If you want to change the Wireless Network name and/or password, click the Wireless tab before you click Update and make the changes that you need.

Need Help Renaming Multiple Photos

I have an iBook G4 running 10.3.9 and I want to know how I can select multiple jpeg files and rename them at one time, I have only been able to do one at a time, which is to time consuming.
In a Windows computer I would just click one photo, go to edit select all, right click on the first photo hit rename and it would rename all selected jpegs.

A single photo in Aperture smart album shows multiple times on Apple TV2.

Sometimes a random photo in my Aperture smart albums displays on my ATV2 multiple times..can I fix this? For example, currently a single picture shows up on the Apple TV in the photos taken "in the past week" smart album 124 times, and the same picture shows up in the "in the past month" smart album 15 times.
When I double check the picture in the original smart album on the computer, it appears correctly, i.e. only one time.

I'm having the same problem. I deleted all the photos in the photostream then tried to drag a couple new ones in to see if they'd synch. Nothing is happening. I recently installed aperture (have about 125 gb in the library). If anyone has an idea what to do, i'm open to try something.

You can click on multiple songs, and change info in the Get Info > Info screen. This applies to most fields EXCEPT Name. iTunes has never allowed the simultaneous change of Name of multiple songs, presumably on the grounds that it is usually an error to do so.
Regarding Genre, yes, this can be changed for multiple songs at once, using the Info tab of Get Info.

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

All using the same driver
I have a Canon printer that has a rear tray and a bottom tray
So, I will have one printer that prints to the rear and the other to the bottom
Other printers (the same one) will be set so that they print in high quality and in duplex for example
I'll name the printers 1.Canon 2.Canon 3.Canon etc
So, when I go to print, I just hit a number on the keyboard and the printer I want is selected
Can I do the same on my laptop?

Back Up - that's in case things go wrong.
In the case you cite:
You have
Mother
Mother Maiden Name
as Faces, right?
In the Corkboard view click on Mother Maiden Name and delete the 'Maiden Name'.
It will disappear and all the photos will be in the Mother face.
Note that 'Mother' and 'Mother ' (that is, with a trailing space) are not the same.
You can also just edit the name 'Mother Maiden Name' to 'Mother'
As for photos staying in manual sort, I can only say that mine do. But as I've no idea what troubleshooting steps you've used.

It says (a bit shortened) 1. Select photo 2. Click print button 3. Select paper size 4. Select print size 5 Click Customize button 6 Click Settings button 7. Select "Multiple of same photo per page from the Photos Per Page pop-up menu. 8 Click OK 9 Click Print.
I can not find the pop-up menu referred to in Step 7. There are two "settings" buttons - neither produce a Photos Per Page pop-up menu. Settings appears if you click a double arrow to the right in the lower margin but only deals with font issues and "Print Settings" does not offer such a pop-up.
I am using Leopard on a PowerBook G4 and just bought and installed the newest iLife 8.
Grateful for help.

When you click on the Customize button there will be a Setting button in the next window. Click on it and in the drop down window that comes up will be the option to print multiple photos of the same photo per page.
Select that option and click OK. You'll get the spinning cursor for a few seconds as iPhoto creates the multiple copies on the page you selected. Be sure that the print size is small enough so that you can have multiple copies of it on the paper size you selected.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
