Can search engines crawl Spry Accordions?

My assumption when I decided to implement an accordion was that search engines would be able to crawl the content, due to the text being in the main document's code and not in a framed page.  With that in mind, I created multiple pages utilizing the Accordion to encompass all or most of the text content on the page.
So the question is, was I right, and can search engines crawl Accordion content or did I do something terrible in search engine optimization?

Yes you can, thanks Arnout.
You can download the source lynx browser (here for instance: http://www.vordweb.co.uk/standards/download_lynx.htm), but the DOS interface is unwieldy to say the least.  As for the Firefox plugin - I tried the Yellowpipe LynxRight version (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1944).  Works fine (right-click yields that page in text form in a popup window), but again abit unwieldy compared to Delorie: very small text, embedded links not clickable.
I find that the Delorie implementation is the most useful - easily read, embedded page links clickable, etc.  Delorie's BIG tradeoff is that it's site-specific: YOUR site, or a client's (since you have to place that delorie.html file in the root folder).  So depends on your purposes.

  • Search Engines, SEO & Spry

Being somewhat new to the Spry framework, I am curious how
Spry will work with search engines and SEO.
I noticed Adobe's Periodic Table Spry example (very cool,
    btw!) at
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/demos/periodic_table/periodic_table.htm
and decided to Google "periodic table spry" for the result. This is
    what appears":
    Spry Periodic Table
Element Types: {Element_Type}. Periods (rows): {Period}.
    Groups (columns): {Group}. Show All. {No} {Group}. {Symbol}.
    {Atomicweight}. {No} {Group}. {Symbol} ...
    labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/demos/periodic_table/periodic_table.htm
    - 37k -
Cached - Similar pages - Note this
It looks as if Google reads the Spry code and not the full
content of the page, and as such, may not work well with SEO and
search engine page rank, let alone presenting an unreadable content
blurb to the search user in the Google result.
Does anyone have any intimate experience with this topic?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Geronimosan,
The only way to make sure that your pages are "indexable" by
search engines is to use the progressive enhancement technique. You
can read more about how to use Spry in an progressive enhancement
manner on our Best Practices page:

  • Remove Bing as default search engine in Safari

Suddenly my Safari default search engine (in the URL bar) has switched to Bing. I changed it back to Google in preferences (on the Safari menu) and although the URL bar says "Search Google or enter address", it still defaults to Bing. Please help.

Hi there I\'m an Apple user,
You may find the information in the article below helpful.
Safari 6 (OS X Mountain Lion): Search the web
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11847
If you want to choose a different search engine, click the magnifying glass at the left end of the field, and then choose the search engine you want.
You can also change the search engine in the General pane of Safari preferences.
Search engine availability varies according to the region set in the Region pane of Language & Text preferences.

  • Need advice on web search engine

I may need to install a search engine for a asp.x web site I am working on. I know nothing about ASP.NET and the these are secure web pages. Also, this is for just a portion of the web site.I have no experience with search engines.
First question: Can search engines limit their search to just a section of a web site?
Second question: What would recommend for my circumstances?
    Thanks!

Answer to your first question: No, I don't want to provide a search engine to the entire site. There is a section you go in with several divisions. One division is the directory of services. The way that it's set up now is they have about 9 PDF files that are link to 9 headings. You click on a heading and it opens the PDF for that topic. The problem is that it takes a long time for the PDF to open and then the person may have to search it for the information they are looking for.
I think you may have answered my question already. If robot files are required to limit a search, then a search engine may not be the practical choice in my case.
By the way, to answer your last question, I am not coding in ASP.NET. I have made it clear to these people that I don't know a line of it. But I also think the solution to the problem is to convert the Directory to web pages, set up links of topics and maybe a JavaScript jump menu for linking to other bookmarked information. That way the searched is limited to only certain topics we decide beforehand but also limited to the directory.
What do you think of this solution? Do you foresee any problems?

  • How can i optimize my SEARCH ENGINE???I use godaddy.i contact them and they give me this conclusion:Search engines are not pulling up your other pages on your website because it is created with javascript. the content on the pages, (photo gallery.....

    conclusion from godaddy:
Search engines are not pulling up your other pages on your website because it is created with javascript.
the content on the pages, (photo gallery, My Recipes/Blog, History, Friends) need to be formatted to HTML, PHP or CSS. No search engines (google, Yahoo, Bing) can crawl//analyze webpages built with javascript.
See if Apple allows iweb to create the pages in HTML format and ask how to make those changes.
I spend more then 1 hour on the phone with them but we didn't find the solution...
please i need help because like this nobody can rich my website...
    www.chefdiego.com
    thank you

The part of iWeb pages that give the search engines problem is the navbar.  That's javascript based.  One way to get around that is to create another blank page in the site that's not  included in the navbar.
Add a text based navbar in that page with just the other pages in the site.
Also you can use that page for creating the sitemap for Google at Create your Google Sitemap Online - XML Sitemaps Generator.
Have you let Google know your site exists? This website describes how to get it recognized: Get your iWeb website found in search engines like Google Yahoo MSN and Bing.

  • Spry content not accessed by  search engines

Since moving to Spry and using accordion panels, search
engines have stopped listing our web pages. It seems that they
    cannot access the HTML code.
Is there a way to set up the accordion panels so that search
engines can access the HTML content?

In order for search engines to index something like menus on
webpages they must be in the body of the HTML for the webpage. They
can not be dynamically loaded into a webpage via a JavaScript. When
you view the source of the webpage that loaded into the browser,
what you see in that source is what the search engines see.

  • Can't submit keywords to GoDaddy's new Search Engine Vis. Service

So, I bought (for $3.00 per month) GoDaddy's SearchEngineVisibility service. It allowed me to make and submit a SiteMap, something GoDaddy would not let me do with the Rage software I bought. So far so good - but GoDaddy shows you a 10 point checklist of how you are doing. It says I have not submitted keywords. I tried typing in keywords on the GoDaddy interface. That did not work. I called GoDAddy. They said the keywords must be defined, outlined, selected - whatever in the program that built the website. I said iWeb but I did not find any function in iWeb that would let me choose keywords. They said iWeb can't do that. Said iWeb is not for business use. It is more for people who want to share photos with grandma and such.
So, how do I submit my keywords to GoDaddy? I would have thought that once I put up the Sitemap that Google/Bing, etc. would be able to crawl the site and automatically select keywords.
Someone said I need to just grab the HTML code from my iWeb site, buy Dreamweaver and paste the HTML code there and then Dreamweaver would allow me to define keywords and submit them.
    Any ideas?

After creating the sitemap.xml, Sitemap Automator uploads it to the root folder on the server - if you enter the correct info!
Before it can add it to Google, Yahoo, Bing and ASK.com, you have to notify each one of your site's existence and, in the case of Google, Yahoo and Bing, open accounts with them. Google and Yahoo require an HTML file and Bing an XML one.
There is no screen in iWeb. You decide what keywords that people will use to search for any page of your site and use them in the text of that page. The search engines will find them. SEKeyword is just a tool to help you find relevant keywords and your Google Dashboard will give you a list of the ones they find relevant once they have indexed your site.
The steps required to submit your website to search engines are listed HERE.

  • Spry optimization for search engines

I read in this post on the Dreamweaver forums (
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?forumid=12&catid=189&threadid =1272744&enterthread=y
) that data loaded by Spry is not available to search engines to
index. Is there a relatively simple way to make that data available
to the search engines? I know one poster mentioned a PHP call into
a hidden div but I am not sure how you would accomplish that. Any
    help would be greatly appreciated.
If anyone has a better suggestion of how to access my data
you can view the page in progress at
    3andband.com/TestSite/iframeTest.html
note: The menu bar is currently only a placeholder image.
Also, I am using an iframe because I need to maintain the
    persistance of the music player.
One more question, would the spry:state property be capable
of providing any sort of loading message will the content of the
iframe loads? Since it is loading spry data.
    Thanks!

Hello Bonniechester, '''try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
'''If Firefox is open,''' you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

'''If Firefox is not running,''' you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
    * On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode'' <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

    Hi Timia,
If you are using Safari as a web browser :-
Open Safari, go to Safari menu > Preferences > General, and put Google as the homepage. Then, choose Google as your default search engine.
If you are using Google Chrome as the web browser :-
      Open Google Chrome.
In the top right corner of the page, click the Chrome menu Chrome menu > Settings.
In the "Search" section, select Google from the drop-down menu.
Let me know if you still experience any issue.

  • Everytime I go to a search engine like Bing or Google and click on the link to a website, it sends me to the wrong page. I don't have this problem with Internet Explorer, so what can I do as far as fixing the problem on Firefox?

Anytime I enter what I'm looking for in the search engine and click on a link, it goes through multiple web addresses until it takes me to an indirect page, and the first few webpages on the link that appear during the loading process are the same. I actually don't know what those websites are though.

Sounds like you have some search redirect Malware or a Rootkit.

  • How to change the default search engine? I accidentaly change it from google to yahoo, and I can't get it back. I changed my homepage too, but it isn't solved. Thanks

    dear, there.
how to change the default search engine? I accidentaly change it from google to yahoo, and I can't get it back. I changed my homepage to google too, but it isn't solved. Thanks

    Clarification:
I believe now you potentially lose all extensions, plug-ins when you use the new reset function, but you will let me know.
If that is the case, your find corrupt file method maybe better. However, I reviewed the two help articles and there appear to be more files than just the delete search.json file and a possible search.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder. I am confused. Then I have to find the folders. I think help articles mentioned how to find the profile containing the files, but not sure.

First of all, forgive me cuz I'm probably NOT the sharpest "chip in a laptop" but I use Internet Explorer as my ISP(I've heard that GOOGLE CHROME is soo much better??) and Google as my search engine. Can u help me pleeez......thank u ..

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
