Can see Extreme, cannot see express

I have streamed music over 3 Airport Express's for a year now with a linksys router, recently i decided to get the Extreme. I am using a windows desktop and can see the Extreme, but I cannot see the expresses... I have re config'd them and everything. I CAN see all 4 devices on my macbook pro, but only the extreme on my windows desktop.... Why can I not see the expresses? I need to see them so I can stream my tunes! Please help.

It's an AE bug.
See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9872929&#9872929:
0. Setup the Airport Express to join an existing wireless network, as usual. make sure that the Express restarts okay and that you can ping its IP. If iTunes is unable to connect to the Express, follow these three steps:
1. Under the "AirPort>Wireless" tab, make sure that the "Enable Ethernet clients" button is on (photo: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/170804/AppleNetworking/ishot-5.jpg). If you fail to do this you will not be able to see or control the Express wirelessly after you update it (though it will still be pingable).
2. Under the "Music" tab, unclick the "Enable AirTunes" radio button, then click on "Enable AirTunes" again, then update the device (photo: http://www.edrian.com/web/airport3.png).
3. Hit the "Update" button.
Apple, Step 2 above really looks like a bug -- please look into it and fix it. Step 1 is VERY ANNOYING, as the default behavior is not to enable ethernet clients, so once you've updated the Express, the only way to see it again is to either reset it or walk it over to your router and plug it into an ethernet cable.
This took far too much effort for something this simple, and required A LOT of fiddling and three lengthy and ultimately unhelpful calls to upper level tech support, none of whom had the solutions, and one of whom recommended outright unwise actions like permanently turning off my computer's firewall.
I'm keeping the Airport Express, but I agree with the blogger who wrote "My new Airport Extreme is retardéd and I’m keeping it" (http://tinyurl.com/cvawel).

  • HT1731 Set up airport extreme, cannot connect express, help?

COnnected a new extreme, tried to connect a new express to upstairs to increase range and add devices, amber light won't go out on express. Cannot locate the device on the network.

Suggest that you unplug the Express and temporarily move it to the same room where the AirPort Extreme is located.
Power up the Express and let it run a full minute or two. Then, push in the reset button on the Express and hold it in for 7-8 seconds, then release.
Allow 40-45 seconds for the Express to restart and display a slow, blinking amber light.
I am assuming that you are using AirPort Utility for the iPad since you mention iOS 5.1 in  your post. If not, download and install App Store - AirPort Utility
Tap Settings on the iPad home screen, then tap Wi-Fi
AirPort Express should appear under the heading of Set up an AirPort Base Station
Tap AirPort Express, and AirPort Utility will take a 25-30 seconds or two to examine your network and then declare that the Express will be setup to extend the AirPort Extreme.
Tap Next in the upper right hand corner of the window and allow a minute or two for AirPort Utility to configure the Express and wait for it to restart again with its new settings.
When AirPort Utility tells you that the AirPort Express is now extending the AirPort Extreme, the Express will display a green light.
Now, move the AirPort Express to a location that is about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area that needs more wireless coverage, plug it in and allow 40-45 seconds for it to start up and display a green light.
    You should be in business.

  • Extended router's network for Airport extreme. Works well with MacbookPro. I can print with notebook with XP SP3 and, I can see the USB-harddisc in the Airport service program but, I cannot use it. I have set filesharing etc. What do I do wrong?

I connected the Airport Extreme wireless to the existing network of my router. At the Airport there is connected via USB a Printer and three hard discs. All works well on my MacBook Pro - I can print and use the hard discs. On my notebook and my desktop, both with XP-SP3 I can use the printer only. In the Airport service program - manual set up - hard discs I can see the drives with the correct names but I cannot work with it. I don't find neithe the Airport Extreme nor the drives in the Windows Explorer. Of course I've set 'filesharing' etc. What do I do wrong? Where is the mistake in the set up?

The Utility transferred all of the AE's settings, so I still have to change the password, which leaves me with only 2 other questions, I think:
    1)  I assume it's just a matter of using the Utility, entering a stronger password and checking for it to be remembered in Keychain Access.  But do I have to  change the password for each individual unit-- the TC, the Extreme and both Expresses-- or will changing it just for the TC alone work for the entire network?
Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.
    2)  Who's the treasonous SOB who spilled the beans to you about the ICBM in my back yard?!?
    N.Korean hackers.
[Edit] Whoops-- one more question:  I want to partition the TC's disk, but Disk Utility doesn't see it.  What do I need to do?
You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).
    Look at Q3 here.

Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.

  • After upgrading to Yosemite I cannot see my other iMac at home (note I am at work) in the Finder window shared devices.  Note my iMac at home is connected to an airport extreme (as is my work iMac) and I can see both airport extreme.

Aftger I upgraded to Yosemite I cannot see my iMac at home from my work (i.e in Finder window under shared devices).  Note both my work and home iMac are connected to time capsules and I can see both of those time capsules but I cannot see either iMac from the other location.  My guess is that the time capsule is blocking the connection to the iMac.  One last comment occasionally (5% of the time) my iMac does magically appear in the shared Finder window but this is extremely rare.  Any help????

Just discovered this one myself.  OK, this may sound silly but place your cursor next to the word "Shared" on the finder sidebar.  The "hidden" command "Show" will magically appear.  Clicking that will display your other network attached devices.
This appears to be a new "feature" that some freaking genius thought was some how "Cool".   My only assumption is that Apple programers expect users to randomly move their cursor around the screen in hopes of finding some critical function like looking for an easter egg in their favorite game.

  • Can't see Express after 1 minute. Using Extreme N

    Hello Everybody
You guys are my last resort. I am unable to figure this out for the life of me. Using the AirPort Utility, I've configured a WDS Network with an AirPort Extreme N and an AirPort Express. My goal was to have wireless music connected to my home stereo and have the Express act as a birdge.
I've only sort-of accomplished this goal. My Macbook Pro is unable to see both the Extreme and the Express at the same time for more then 1 minute or so. It's certainly strange behavior.
If I reset my my Extreme, I am able to see the Express and the Extreme from the AirPort Utility. If I just leave it as it is, after about 1 minute or so I'll rescan and ONLY see the Extreme Base Station. I'm unable to stream music as iTunes can't locate the Express. If I reset my Extreme again to see both, only when I can see both, I'm able to stream music from iTunes to the Express. Today I streamed for about 6 hours without changing the song. When I came to change a song in iTunes, suddenly I could no longer see my Express!!
This is completely annoying and utterly ridiculous. I'm so close to returning the Express because it hasn't been as easy to use as everything esle I've bought from Apple. I've searched the boards and didn't find this specific issue.
    Help?
    Am I missing something?
Why can I see it sometimes and then it goes away?
    Has anybody experienced this?

WDS one of my favorite functions of the airport base stations
*first what id do just to make sure everything is happy as in mac happy
1:move the airport express and extreme to the same room
2:hard reset the express and extreme base station, just to start back off at square one
3:leave the express unplugged, and configure the extreme only using the assisted mode in the airport utility
4:after updating the extreme confirm the light on the extreme is green and your able to get online wireless n so on
5: now plug in the express, and run through the configuration on assisted setup
*same deal just using the options 1: connect to current wireless network, 2: extend the range of my wireless network, 3: choose the network of the extreme N base station, 4: then select the base station which is going to be the main *in this case its the extreme, 5: it may take it a moment but the airport utility will automatically configure the airports both WDS and it can take up to a entire minute for both to send their configuration to each other once its done and the airports are configured verify both are green and you can see both in the airport utility
Lastly, as long as you can see both airports in the utility, plug the express and move it to the desired location
*if this does not work however you can attempt to configure the base stations manually which isnt hard but id try the assisted mode first

  • Airport Utility: I can see Extreme and Express but no Apple TV

    Hi,
When I launch Apple Utility, I can see my Extreme and (2) Express's, but Apple TV is no where to be found.
Is there any way for the Apple Utility to work with the Apple TV?
    Thanks!

When I launch Apple Utility, I can see my Extreme and (2) Express's, but Apple TV is no where to be found.
Sorry, but that is normal as the AirPort Utility does not administer the Apple TV ... only AirPorts or Time Capsules.

  • Can see internet but cannot see modem

I have several machines and printers in my house, all of them are in some way - with or without wires - connected to the AEBS. System works great! I recently moved from dial-up (through the AEBS) to WiMAX. What a difference!
While I have many machines in the house, I have reduced the set-up for this testing to the two scenarios presented. Using the Motorola Canopy modem connected via ethernet to PowerBook, I can use the internet and see the modem diagnostics page. Using the Canopy connected to AEBS via ethernet to the WAN port and wireless (802.11) to the PowerBook, I can see the internet but I cannot see the modem diagnostics page. I believe that it has something to do with the way I am setting options in the AEBS (or maybe the PowerBook), but I have not been able to figure it out. Can some-one please help?
Note: While I am using the Motorola Canopy modem, I don't think that matters, I think that any cable or DSL modem would do the same thing.
    Thank you,

You question was about a Zyxel modem, but you indicate that you have other equipment...an AirPort Express, Airport Extreme, etc.
Is the Zyxel "modem" your only modem/router?
Or, do you have other Apple routers connected to the Zyxel "modem"?
Changes are, although the Zyxel device may be called a "modem", it is really a gateway....a combination modem and router in one box.
Can you provide the model number of your "modem"?

  • I can see my airport extreme network, but none of my devices (vista, ipad, iphone, ipod) can connect to it. Why?

I have set up my apple aiport extreme after moving and I can see the airport extreme light is green and I can see the airport extreme network name, but when I select the network, the device cannot connect to it. No error message appears, the device simply is in a constant state of trying to connect to the network.
I can easily connect to the non Airport Extreme network.
    Can anyone help?

Try factory resetting, it often helps when changing location.

How can I administer a Gen1 Airport Express from, my MacPro (OS 10.9, Airport Utility 6.3.2). I can see the Express in the WiFi window but from the Airport Utility I get the following message: " This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information." Of course there's nothing of value on the support page. Any clues anyone?

Apple has dropped support in Mavericks (10.9) of the AirPort Express and AirPort Extreme models that were discontinued more than six years ago.
You can still administer the older AirPort models if you have a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC.

  • Network is created with extreme, devices dont see expresses

Hello everyone, i will try to explain my dilemma as clearly as possible.
Recently we recived the 2WIRE u-verse ATT router, which is terrible on giving a wireless signal.
So i decided to buy an airport extreme, and 2 expresses.
I disabled the wireless of the 2Wire router,
Then set up the network with the Extreme,
and placed the expresses in the room that has terrible signal.
(other rooms do not have any ethernet ports, but do have the phone line things on the walls)
The issue that i am having is those two other rooms.
The room with the Aiport Extreme is fantastic, and runs smoothly.
And yet my iPhone and iPads, cant receive a signal, the computer can but its so slow. And yet the Expresses are in those rooms.
The Expresses are set to extend the range, and the signal to the extreme is "excellent"
The ony information i could find to resolve this is to buy a powerline adapter, is that the only way?
If so/If not, how do they work?
I did every confiquration possible, very rarely the connection would be great, but dead again the next day.

Without knowing the exact layout of your home, it may be possible that both of the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn) may be just outside of the useful signal range coming from the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) to successfully extend it.
One way to find out, is to make Signal-to-Noise (SNR) measurements at the locations where the AXns are placed to see if the signal quality is sufficient enough.
SNR (in dB) = Signal (in dBm) - Noise (in dBm)
For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs.
    SNR Guideline
    40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
If you have a Mac laptop handy, I suggest downloading a copy of iStumbler. You will use iStumbler's Inspector feature (select Edit > Inspector from iStumbler's menu) to capture the Signal & Noise values.  Be sure to power-off each AXn as you only want to measure the SNR of the AEBSn. Start with your laptop near the AEBSn, note the readings, and then, take the same measurements at each of the locations where the AXns are placed.
The SNR, as measured from the laptop, decreases as the range to the base station increases because of applicable free space loss. Also an increase in RF interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones, which increases the noise level, also decreases SNR.
If the SNR is 25dB+ at each of these locations, then you should be getting reasonable signal quality from the AEBSn at all of these locationst. If less, either try to locate the source of the Wi-Fi interference or try relocating either of the AXns until they are within a 25dB SNR range.
If, after relocating the AXns, you still do not get a high enough SNR, then you may want to consider employing Powerline adapters.

  • Airport express: iMac read/write to pc, pc can see iMac but not read/write

airport express: my iMac can read/write files to my Windows 8 pc, not reverse. My PC can connect to my iMac (it shows on the PC as a network device) but cannot see any files or folders. Airport docs suggest that my Documents folder should be visible. Tried enabling access everywhere I can think on iMac such as SMB. Any help?

    Hi everyone
I've managed to work out how to share my desktop and the external drive attached to it via wireless so my Macbook Pro can see, open, and edit and save photo files via Photoshop Elements.
I can also then view and edit them through the Windows PC - though they say some properties are missing this I can live with.
Therefore no re-formatting needed, and no downloads either.
    Many thanks

Is there a way to configure win 8 Laptop to airport express?  I can see the connection to the wireless network, but troubleshooter suggests there's there is no gateway and of course no internet. The connection
shows limited.  Any help you could provide would be most appreciated.  Further, should I simply buy another router for the windows machine?  If I did that, would it interfere with the airport?

The internal HDDs must be formatted in either EXT3 or EXT4 file system because NSS uses Linux OS.  This is mainly because the RAM designed to fit with the customized Linux OS's size.
You can connect to an external HDD via a  USB or eSATA port. The external HDD's file system can be NTFS, FAT32, AFT or EXT3/4 to be recognized for read/write. You can connect a 2TB USB/eSATA drive connec to the NSS via USB port to format your HDD for NTFS, AFT, FAT32, or EXT3/4 partition.
You can join the NSS to a Windows domainr so all domain users to access NSS. You cannot replace the NSS for the Windows 2003 SP2 server. They are two different products and do different jobs. Windows server is features sets server while the NSS is the files/data server.
    Hope that helps!!

  • Can see Airport Express, but iTunes won't connect and more..

I'm running Mac OSX 10.4.2 on an Aluminium PowerBook G4, connected to an Airport Extreme Base Station - which can use the internet etc easily. I have an Airport Express, which can be seen & changed in Airport Admin, and can be seen in iTunes - but can not be connected to in iTunes - it tries for about 30 seconds, and then gives up, not even an error message? I'm not sure if it's a related issue, buit an old iBook running OSX 10.3.9, connects to the same Airport Express, no problems. But the PowerBook, whilst it can see the iBook, won't connect to the iBook via Airport - it tells me it is not operational, or something.
Can anyone think of anything that may fix the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

Is this a new problem on this Powerbook - or has it never worked? While there are many (and some very obscure) causes for this problem, one of the more common causes is firewall software of some sort. This also includes applications designed to monitor outgoing network data (like spyware) on a Mac, like "Little Snitch".

  • I switched from an iPhone to a Galaxy s4.  Everything seems ok except text messaging with people who have an iPhone.  I can send them a text, they can see it, but I cannot see what they text back.  What can I do please?

I just switched from an iPhone to a Galaxy 4S and I like it except for text messaging.  I can text, they can see it, but I cannot see their response if they are using an iPhone.  Can you help me with this?  What do I do please?

Congratulations on your new phone kathdogg! Now let's get your messaging working correctly. If you still have your old device, turn it on, go to settings, and turn off iMessaging.
If you are no longer in possession of your old device, you will need to remove your phone number from your Apple Support Profile. This can be done here: http://bit.ly/1cst2SC
Please keep us posted, and let us know if this resolves your issue!
