Can see USB HD in AEBS Utility...

... but how do I access it to use files, etc?
AEBS, LaCie 160 gig HD

Hi!
I have a similar problem: I have an Airport Extreme (n), a new MBP 15" 2.4GHz and a rather old fashioned PC, running Win XP Pro SP2. The Windows machine is connected over Ethernet to the Airport Base.
I also cannot see the AirDisk with my Win-PC. I can access the Airport utility and make changes to the Base station, but I cannot access the hard drive.
Suggestions are very welcome!

Schmitten

  • I can see my printer in the utility but can NOT print????

I have set up the printer utility with the drivers of my new HP all-in-one 1610. I have plugged the printer into the back of my Base Station. Is there anything that I am missing? I can see it through bonjour, but when I try to print, it gets stuck on the "establishing connection with printer"
    Any thoughts???

Yeah, thanks for that. not helpful.
I have tried to log into the AirPort Admin Utility but it gives me an error for the base station. I tried to update the firmware and I got the same error message. The base station is working well enough to get me online, but I can not access any of the base station preferences, or access panels to check to see if it is seeing the printer. I can see the printer in the Printer utility though.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Can see usb HD in Utility, but don't know how to access it.

Hello and thanks in advance for any help!
I have the 802.11n router with a 250gb MyBook hard drive connected to it. When I double click on the router in the Airport Utility - it brings up the screen, which I can select 'Disks' on. I see the hard drive listed here, but it does not appear on my desktop nor do I see a way to connect to it. I do notice under "Disks" it's saying "Users: 0". I am not sure if that is significant.
I am not too fluent in computer networking, but am assuming I don't have something properly selected.
Please advise if I can give any additional details. Any ideas?
Thanks much - everyone enjoy the holiday!
    Best.

  • Can't see USB disk in Windows

I have tried simply everything I can think of to use my Maxtor USB External drive. I can see it in the AirPort Utility, but no matter what, it won't appear in Windows explorer. I've even tried typing the IP of the airport express (using the default) - nothing.
Any help would be completely and unabashedly appreciated.

One more thing. Open your Airport Utility, (Start>Programs>Airport Utility), then click on your Airport device icon. Next, hit "Manual Setup". Enter the password for the device, if needed. Now, click on the Disks icon. Click on your Maxtor drive in the list, and see if there are any errors listed near that area (I don't remember what the Windows Airport Utility looks like). If there are errors, please list them here on the forum. If you are connecting to the Airport Extreme with a wired connection, you need to do this. While you are in the Disk section, click on the tab labeled "File Sharing". Make sure the check box labled "Enable file sharing" is checked, then also check the box that says "Share disks over ethernet WAN port". If none of these things help, please respond and tell me.

  • Can't see Airport Express from Airport Utility anymore

I unplugged my airport express when I went out of town for a week. Now that I'm back, I plug in the airport express and it just blinks amber. In Airport Utility I cannot see any networks. Other notes:
    - I'm running XP, using the Airport Express with Airtunes to run my stereo
    - when I 'View Wireless Networks' I see both the airport express and my neighbor's Apple base station (so it's odd that they don't show up in Airport Utility
    - I have tried resetting Airport Express several times, along with my wireless router, cable modem, and computer
    - I have checked to make sure software is up-to-date, and even re-installed the Airport Utility.
    - I recently purchased an iPhone, and before I left town it worked (with the Remote app and updated iTunes) with the stereo via the Airport Express
    - Both the computer and iPhone see my home network just fine, but Airport Utility sees nothing, despite rescanning
    - It is possible that either iTunes and/or Windows may have updated since this last worked a week ago.
    - I started debugging this three days ago with no progress (it is not intermittent)
    Any advice?

I still had phone support, and they showed me how to fix this.
The piece that I was missing is that after I reset the AX, I have to connect to it directly through the wireless connection (dropping to connection from my PC to my home wireless network). From this connection, I can see the AX in Airport Utility and change the settings.
One other piece of info, I was using a manual setup on the AX. This was necessary due to the 26 character WEP password (not using WPA2).

  • I cannot see my new WD My Passport for Mac hardrive in finder, it has USB 3, compatible withUSB 2. I can see it in disk utility

My new WD My Passport for mac,1 Tb harddrive in finder. it's there initially then disapears, I can see it in disk utilities and in the systrm report, so I think it is moounting, but difficult to access and to ejet when not visible in the finder sidebar. This has a USB 3 connection, whic i states is also compatible with USB 2

Check the format of the drive when in disk utility. It should be
    Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
A powererd external usb hub can help when the computer's usb port is marginal.

  • Windows 7 can't see USB disk (WD Passport) on Airport Extreme

I am needing some help. I just bought an Airport Extreme and everything is working but I can't see my files on the USB external drive from the Airport Extreme. I can see the drive inside of the Airport Utility but not over the network on my laptop.
    My laptop is Windows 7.
I read somewhere that I may need to reformat my WD Passport but how do I do that in windows 7 and will I lose my files on the drive if I do this?
THANK YOU SO MUCH for helping me!

There are a number of posts related to issues between Windows 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
o From the Vista desktop, click Start
    o Search for: security
    o Click 'Local Security Policy'
o Goto Local Policies > Security Options
o Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
o Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
o Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    o De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    o Click OK
    To disable Windows Search:
    o Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
o On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
o Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
o Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name.
On the AEBS, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab.
On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • I am connecting an external USB HDD and I can see it on my Apple Macbook Air. BUT this drive is READ only. How can I write to it?

I am connecting an external USB HDD and I can see it on my Apple Macbook Air. BUT this drive is READ only. How can I write to it?

    Drive Partition and Format
1.Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Extended router's network for Airport extreme. Works well with MacbookPro. I can print with notebook with XP SP3 and, I can see the USB-harddisc in the Airport service program but, I cannot use it. I have set filesharing etc. What do I do wrong?

I connected the Airport Extreme wireless to the existing network of my router. At the Airport there is connected via USB a Printer and three hard discs. All works well on my MacBook Pro - I can print and use the hard discs. On my notebook and my desktop, both with XP-SP3 I can use the printer only. In the Airport service program - manual set up - hard discs I can see the drives with the correct names but I cannot work with it. I don't find neithe the Airport Extreme nor the drives in the Windows Explorer. Of course I've set 'filesharing' etc. What do I do wrong? Where is the mistake in the set up?

The Utility transferred all of the AE's settings, so I still have to change the password, which leaves me with only 2 other questions, I think:
    1)  I assume it's just a matter of using the Utility, entering a stronger password and checking for it to be remembered in Keychain Access.  But do I have to  change the password for each individual unit-- the TC, the Extreme and both Expresses-- or will changing it just for the TC alone work for the entire network?
Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.
    2)  Who's the treasonous SOB who spilled the beans to you about the ICBM in my back yard?!?
    N.Korean hackers.
[Edit] Whoops-- one more question:  I want to partition the TC's disk, but Disk Utility doesn't see it.  What do I need to do?
You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).
    Look at Q3 here.

Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.

  • Canon VixiaHF10- I can see canon folder on USB but can not import video

I am able to connect my Canon Vixia HF10 to my iMac (using iLife) through USB- Iphoto opens and imports fine but the iMovie is not opening. I can see the folder with Unix files- please advise how to get movie clips into iMovie 7.1.4 Thank-you

I got the HF10 as well and found out that my HF10 is not supported by iMovie.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1014
I learned that the NTSC HF10 is compatible, the PAL version however which I have is not (tag on the bottom of the camera states it's a HF10E).
What worked for me, at least on iMovie08:
1 Connect camera and manually start iMovie
2 Now, open disc utility and select the mounted device carrying your movies
3 select to make a disc image from this device
When disc utility finalizes the image and mounts it, iMovie all of a sudden recognizes it as a camera, opens the import window and you can start importing from the disc image.
Hope this works for you on iMovie07 as well.

  • Can't see usb-stick in Finder

So I connect my usb-stick, which is also an mp3-player with SD slot, and it doesn't pop up in the finder of Leopard.
Its formatted in FAT32 and I CAN use it (read/write) with Tiger (10.4.10) and XP (VMWare Fusion), SD-slot function is working perfectly too. Other usb-sticks do not have this problem on my mbp with Leopard (10.5.1).
I admit its a very cheap-*** one, but why does Tiger see it and Leopard not
Also I CAN see the stick in System Profile, and I do not get an error while I just pull it out of the usb-port (since I cannot eject it).
    Any solutions?

  • Airport Extreme, can't see usb disk from media player

I have a WD hard drive (formatted in FAT32) connected to my Airport Extreme. I can access it from my MacBook and I can see it under disks in Airport Utility. When I try to access the drive wirelessly from my Merlin media player (that's connected to my TV), the drive doesn't show up under the Airport Extreme Workgroup. I should mention that when the drive is plugged into my MacBook, I CAN access the drive on my media player under my MacBook's Workgroup. So I'm assuming the issue is with the Airport allowing the drive to be seen, and not the format of the drive itself. Can anyone help?

By default, when you enable "File Sharing" in the AirPort Utility, your AirPort Extreme will share out an attached USB HDD with either Macs or PCs.
To access the shared HDD from a Windows 7 PC:
Start > Computer > Map network drive
Drive: <use default or select a drive letter>
Folder: \\<AirPort's Base Station Name or IP Address>\<HDD's Volume Name>
User name: <Enter Base Station Administrator name>
Password: <Enter Base Station Administrator password>

  • Airport Admin Utility can see my AE, but Itunes can't

I have two AEs, one connected to the Internet the other in a far off bedroom. I want music only (no internet) in the bedroom. When I turn on the computer in the bedroom, itunes cannot see the BEDROOM Airport Express. The only way I can do it is to go into the room with Internet access which is my "main" airport express (call it OFFICE) and then walk back into the bedroom.
When I get back to the bedroom, itunes is able to see the BEDROOM airport express and use it. If I close the lid of the computer or shut it off, the next time I want to play music I need to go through this sequence. Airport Admin can see the BEDROOM AE but itunes doesn't list it as a speaker and displays a message about "BEDROOM Speakers are Unavailable, use Computer" (unless I go back to the OFFICE first to refresh it). I'ver tried re-booting, re-starting itunes, scanning, robustness, channels etc.
I just want to power on the Mac in the bedroom from scratch and have itunes see and use the Airport Express there that it already sees in Admin Utility.

Good tip! Didn't know about that. I'm at work right now, but will try it later tonight. Any other suggestions for me?
Connect to Server should be able to find the disk if it's on the Airport? I tried doing something similar with Disk Utility, but the AirDisk didn't show up in its sidebar. I mean, the Airport Utility knows it's there, and I have verified that the drive is good with a wired connection.
Additional info: We had a power outage last night, after power was back I powercycled everything and ran AirPort Utility, which prompted me to upgrade to 7.1.1. I did. Now I can't see the disk.
This used to happen once in awhile, but was always rectified by soft-resetting the AEBS and restarting the MacBook. Now even after doing that and downgrading to 7.1 firmware, I'm still having no luck.

  • Can not see wireless TM in disk utility or desktop.

Am I running a TM Airport (router) it runs great, I love everything about it and the backups have no issues.
But I wanted to partition my 500mb drive on my TM yet for some reason I can not see the drive either on my desktop or in disk utility. Is there some setting I need to change somewhere else to be able to view this wireless drive and configure it? I looked via Airport Utility and the only option there is to archive or erase it, at least that can see it.
When the backup starts I do see a mounted drive show up.
    Any ideas?

It does not show up because when I am not backing up, it gets disconnected...
