Can separate iTunes libraries access media on a NAS

I believe that iTunes is fundamentally 2 parts; a library (index system) and a media storage and that I can have the media on a NAS while the library remains on my Mac.
As I am setting up a NAS to store media for my streamer the question is, can I have more than one library (mine and my daughter's) accessing one store of media?

Hi David,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  You can create and use multiple iTunes libraries as per this article:
iTunes 11 for Mac: Use multiple iTunes libraries
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12166
Bear in mind that if you delete anything in one of the libraries and get prompted whether to keep the file or trash it, trashing it will delete it and make it "not found" in the other library.  The steps I'm referring to are explained here:
iTunes 11 for Mac: Delete songs, playlists, or other items

Copy the content from one computer to another and import the media into iTunes.
Any playlists, playcounts, etc on the computer the content is being moved from will be lost.

Why, if it told you you have insufficient space on your computer, would it suggest making more space available on your phone?
At a guess, you have insufficient space on your phone. Installing software will typically require more space than the final size of the software, perhaps even twice or three times as much, for the installation process. You can easily dump some videos or music temporarily, and then synch them back in afterwards.

  • I have multiple users on my computer with separate iTunes libraries.  can we share?

I have multiple users on my computer with separate iTunes libraries.  Is it possible to share the libraries?  The "share library" preference doesn't seem to work.

Hi b noir, I also have two users on one pc with two different iTunes libraries.  But I also want to put them onto an external hard drive so that I can free up some memory on the pc.  So I figure I need to consolidate the two users iTunes libraries first before moving to hard drive?  But not quite sure how to do that on the iTunes 11?  Thanking you in advance!!

  • Separate itune libraries on 1 mac computer

I am wanting 2 separate itunes libraries on my computer or something similar, where files are separate and using my music group won't interfere with using my wife's.  Can someone help?
I have tried numerous suggestions that I "googled" but none seemed to be any help whatsoever.

Quit itunes, and then reopen while holding down option. it will promp you to quit, choose a library, or create a new library. Click create a new library, and name it something you can find easily later. I reccomend that you save it in /home folder/music. Import media you want to, and you are good to go. When you want to change libraries, launch itunes holding option, and click choose library. Choose the library you want to open. You can also just create a new user account.

  • 3 user accounts on Mac with separate iTunes libraries

I have 3 user accounts on a Mac with separate iTunes libraries.  Home sharing is turned on for all 3 and all use the same home sharing login Apple ID).  On both Apple TV 2's all 3 libraries appear under "computers", however, only one is accesible (always the account that has been first opened on the computer) with the others saying "Could not connect to "xx Library".  When I have one home sharing turned on for this computer it is always accesible from the Apple TV and I can open up iTunes with the same home sharing ID from another Mac in the home and it will appear on the Apple TV with no problem.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your response ckuan.  These 3 libraries are using separate user accounts on the computer and when all 3 accounts have itunes open at the same time, the iPads have no problem seeing all 3 itunes libraries through home sharing, and for a brief moment yesterday, I was able to get one of the Apple TV's to connect to all 3, however that did not last long before only one was available and the other two eded up having the "could not connect error".  Do you have any other ideas?  I have already submitted this problem to Apple as I am sure that before the update (whether it was the Apple TV update or the iTunes update) I had no problem doing this.

  • How do you combine two iTunes libraries - my husband I have separate iTunes libraries and want to combine our music

iTunes: my husband and I have two separate iTunes libaries and would like to combine them.  I have tried homesharing but as my laptop is not an Apple I can't seem to find advice online with Apple.

iTunes- How to share music between different user accounts on a single computer
You cannot merge two separate libraries across user accounts. Photos does not have the function of merging different Photos.library files. If you have Aperture then you can merge the two before migrating over to Photos.

  • Separate iTunes libraries??

my sister just bought an mp3 player and we're trying to use my iTunes to put music on it but i can figure out how to create a separate library. i know it's possible but i need someone to tell me how to do it cuz i can't figure it out. help!!

The only way I know of to have a complete separate iTunes library is for you to create a separate Windows user account for your sister and have her log into the computer using that account. You can then each have your own iTunes library.

  • I have two separate itunes libraries on two different computers. One computer has crashed, but they are both on the same account. Is there any way to transfer music onto a new library from a computer that cannot be turned on and have itunes accessed?

    Help?

if the computer cannot be turned on, one option would be to remove the hard drive and put it in an external enclosure that can be connected to the working computer.

  • I have two users on the same MAC and want to have separate ITunes libraries stored on my time capsule.  what's the best way to ensure that is done?

I have 2 users on a MAC each with separate accounts (email, photo, ITunes) and I want to migrate my ITUnes Library over to a time capsule so that each usewr still has their own library bu don't want to duplicate songs.  What is the best way to have both Itunes pointed to separate libraries both stored on the Time Capsule?

A bit of basics on iTunes.  iTunes does 99% of what you see through a library.itl file in the iTunes folder.  This file is a database and in it are references to the actual media files.  These files can be anywhere in theory, but if you have iTunes set to default then they are nicely organized in media folders in the iTunes folder.  You have probably moved them to some central shared location in the past, then built up two individual libraries around that central location.
iTunes is very fussy about a person dragging files to a different location, and that goes double if the other location is on a different drive.  You can move files, but it is best to let iTunes do it so it can keep track.  If this was just for one person I'd say go into preferences, select the other drive for media location, then close preferences. My understanding (never done this before) is iTunes will then ask you if you want to move your media.  Say yes and iTunes will move it and keep track of it -- for your library.  Now when you go to the other person's library, it opens and you see loads of ! because their library is still looking for the media on the same  drive as the library is located on.  I don't think it will work (but you could always try) to re-assign the media location to the external drive because the reference in the database is to look for such-and-such a file on the internal drive.  iTunes did that for the first library as part of the move, but not for the second one.  Note that typically when you want to move a single user's collection from drive to drive we advise moving the whole iTunes folder, library files and all, to another drive, but you don't have that structure.
So I'm not sure what to advise.  If it were me and I was absolutely gung-ho on doing this I would re-assign the media with one library.  Then edit the .xml version of the library file for the second library so it points to the new file locations and import this into a fresh iTunes library for the second user.  This isn't the perfect solution because nominally the .xml version does not 1005 replicate all the characteristics of the original .itl file (which cannot be edited).
Or maybe some other user bas a better idea.

  • My husband bought an imac for the first time.  We backed up our separate itunes libraries on external hard drive but when it was retrieved, the 2 libraries had merged and they only appear in my husbands area.  How do we split them back up again?

Really need some help here.  We got the guys at PC World to back up our old computer onto and external hard drive, but our libraries merged.  I've tried retrieving the whole thing from the external hard drive but can't seem to identify any files to retrieve.  If I could copy the whole thing into my area, we could both just erase the things from each others' libraries that we didn't want.  We are imac virgins, and need some advice!

if it's content purchased from the iTunes store we're talking about, the following script will help to tell the files apart:
    Track Down Purchases
This script will examine each track in a selection of tracks or a selected playlist to determine if it was purchased from the iTunes Store and then copies it to a discrete playlist named for the person who purchased it, eg: "Steve Ballmer's Purchased Music". Recognizes song, video, and audiobook purchases. Purchaser information is gleaned by examining the track's file, which, depending on file location and access speed, can take as long a second per track.
for content you added manually (i.e. CD rips), i don't know of any easy way once the libraries were merged.

  • Two separate iTunes Libraries?

I'm in the process of loading all of my and my wife's cds into iTunes and am wondering if there's a simple way to tag or keep separate our cds within iTunes. Is there a way to create a separate library for each of our collections?

Hold down the option key at iTunes startup.  You will be asked to create / switch library.
However, keep in mind that this solution will not allow you to access all your content at once.  You may also consider simply tagging all the content you wish by doing a get info (can be done on multiple song at once) and using the comment field to enter information.  You can later on search by this comment or even make a smart playlist to list all your specific songs.

  • Managing Separate iTunes Libraries ~ OS X & iOS8

I have read some of the entries on this question and am aware of how to create and select different library files by holding down Option when launching iTunes on the Mac, but am seeking further information.
I have three libraries; one is my regular music library; one is for Jamey Aebersold jazz playa longs (for learning jazz piano); and one is for (Buddhist) Dharma chants (for meditation practice). I don't want any items to appear in more than one library. Yet they appear to do that.
For instance, if I open the library I have created for Dharma by holding down the Option key and selecting the Dharma library on start up:
    1.
    2.
But when that library opens, items from both the regular Music Library and the Aebersold Library appear:
    3.
Furthermore, in iTunes Preferences, the Library Name always appears the same, even if the File Path is different.
    4.
This shot is with the Dharma library selected:
    5.
This shot is with the regular Music Library selected:
    6.
    Any insights or tips appreciated!

'Hold Option, launch iTunes, select Create new library...
This creates a new iTunes library.itl file.'
...but the new iTunes library.itl file seems to be a duplicate of the file in the main iTunes folder...not a 'blank slate'....
