Can shmmax be greater than physical memory?

Hi-
Can setting shmsys:shminfo_shmmax greater than the physical memory on a server cause any problems?
Also, what ist he maximum shmsys:shminfo_shmmax setting for 5.8 running 64-bit?
Thanks for your thoughts.

I can't see how it would cause problems. This variable simply tells the shared-memory applications how big segments that they are allowed to create.
The check which determines if it actually have the resources to create the segment are performed at a later stage.

  • How come free memory will be more than physical memory?

    Hello Guruz,
Interesting, I installed one zone with 1Gb dedicated memory, But when I type top command I am getting o/p as below.
Memory: 1024M phys mem, 1972M free mem
How come free memory will be more than physical memory?
If that so, how can we get exact memory utilization on non-global zones.
    Thanks in advance.

Has anyone seen this error when attempting to install Solaris 8 on a Sparc 10. I receive this error when I attempt to ( ok boot cdrom (enter) )

I think I am having a problem with my physical memory.

I'm banging my head because I can't find a solution to make my arch-install detect an audio CD
I assume that you mean the optical drive. I don't see a /dev/sr0 in /dev
Does it show up with lsblk or parted -l?
Looks like it's a LiteOn drive.
You can play an audio CD.
    mplayer cdda://
    mpv cdda://track[−endtrack][:speed][/device] −−cdrom−device=PATH
An audio CD doesn't have a mountable file system on it.

  • Can't add more than one memory stick

    Hi guys,
I could really use some help, this is driving me insane for weeks and I can't find any solution among teh interweb or this forum.
My problem: I've a very instable system : different bsod on win7 start up, infinite reboot, random black screen, freeze...even the bios freeze once.
My 2cts: Memory trouble. By using various ineffective methods (listed below), the only repetitive pattern I've found is that -> the more memory stick I use, the more instable the system became.
     - With 1 stick I get sometime a stable system (3 days without trouble) but it goes back to infinite loop after a crash
     - With 2 sticks I get a stable windows but freeze after 5-10min of gaming, and infinite loop
     - With 3 sticks I can't get pass windows start up, and infinite loop most of the time
My current solution: I manage to get these results with by downgrading the memory (otherwise I get bsod on start up or infinite reboot every time even with one stick).
     - EIST and Intel Turbo Boost turn off
     - Ram frequency set to 1066Hz (instead of 1333) -> Funny this parameter seems not to hold, it goes back to 1333
     - Unlink ram configuration: CRate at 2 and 9-9-9-27 (instead of 9-9-9-24) -> not sure because the value on center column is still at 24
     - Vram set between 1.5v and 1.65v (instead of 1.46 in auto)
    Other unsuccessful stuff I've tried:
     - each tests are made with barebone configuration (one HDD, no DVD, etc...)
     - multiple CMOS clearing (all night with jumper)
     - several clean win7 install
     - several tests with each of my 4 ram sticks alone (on DIMM 1)
     - all drivers update
     - return the motherboard to get a new one (the actual is 3 months old)
     - buying 2 more ram sticks
     - BIOS flash with 1.H, 1.G and even the brand new one 1.I !
    My configuration :

    P67A-GD55 (b3)

    SSD HD for system
    Windows 7 64bits PRO sp1
    Corsair TX650
No fancy keyboard like GR11 (microsoft wireless 10.A)

    Any ideas ?? Thanks !

Sorry! Not going to work, no way, no how!
Ditch the G.Skill & use just the Crucial. RAM defaults the way it does because of the SPD profiles programmed on the chips. Use either 'Link' or Auto. Set Dram V. to 1.514-1.521v., manually set timings to CR 1, 9 9 9 24.

  • Can i use more than 4GB memory in my laptop dv6700t if I install windows 7 64bit?

The pavilion dv6700t autodetects as 6853ea. It runs 32bit Vista in 3 GB mem.
I know I can go up to 4 GB using the 2 slots, but can I use more when I install the 64bit version of Windows 7? If so, should I install the memory first, or the OS?
    Thanks.

    Hi:
The specs for your notebook state max memory is 4 GB.
However you should be able to install 8 GB with a 64 bit OS, because you have the Mobile Intel 965 chipset.
I would install the 64 bit OS first, so you see the memory go over 4 GB in Windows after you install the memory.

    Hi
You can make the setting  in delivery item category by going to the below path
SPROIMGLogistoics execution-Shipping-Deliveries ---Define item categories for delivery (OVLP)
    Maintain Check minimum quantity  "B"
By doing the settings also it will not work in case of deliveries  made reference to STOs.

    Hi,
We are executing SSIS JOB from 2008R2 server, what the job do is it pulls the data from SQL 2012 Server. During this process we got the attached error found, please help me how to troubleshoot this.
    Also
We have ownership issue with the Hyperion output files that are created at Shared location
since User 1 will be executing the package manually and it is also running as a scheduled job on the SSIS server.  When the scheduled job creates the file, the previous/existing extract file will be owned by the SQL Agent account.  When User1 executes
the package manually it will fail because it will run under User1's credentials and will not overwrite the existing file which is owned by SQL Agent.
The same will occur in the opposite case where User 1 has run the process manually and the existing output file is owned by him – then the scheduled job will fail because the SQL Agent account will not overwrite/delete User1's file.
Could you please tell me guys how to sort it out this issue?
    Thanks
    DBA

Any other error preceeding to the error you attached?
You may try using command which will use SQL 2012 DTExec version and provide SSIS package path there.
SQL Job with CmdExec and command like below:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DTS\Binn\DTExec.exe /F "c:\packagepath\packagename.dtsx"
    Ownership issue:
Is the logic correct in SSIS package? Does it check if there is any existing file, if yes then update/delete so on...

  • Oracle 9,2.0 32 bit for Solaris can not access more than 4GB?

I am sorry to ask rather stupid question.
I joined company which has big SUN Fire running Solaris 9 64bit version.
It has system memory 16GB and 8 CPUs.
I found 8GB memory reported as free. It is production box. It is heavy loaded.
I guess Kernel parameter settings for Oracle set too low.
I reported DBA and asked DBA to improve.
My DBA said Oracle 32 bit version was installed and Oracle 32bit can't access more than 4GB system memory.
Is it true that Oracle 9.2.0 32bit for Solaris can not access more than 4GB memory?
32bit CPU and 32bit OS might have problem in access big memory.
But I never heard Oracle 9 running on 64bit Solaris box can not access more than 4GB.
Specially on Sparc 64bit chip and Solaris 9 64bit version.
I searched forums and could not find good answer. I believe it is rather obvious.
Please help me on this. I will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I was really surprised by the fact that almighty
ORACLE can not access 4GB memory.
So, it is true that 32bit Oracle is limited by 4GB RAM.Nope. 32bit almighty anything is limited to (max) 2^32 virtual adresses on a vmm system.
Often there is also some split where memory is divided into system and user areas, where user (program) has e.g. 2 or 3GB. All this works regardless of amount of RAM available 0.5 or 512GB.
Perhaps this link provides some useful info/background.

  • Reduce Physical Memory Amount on Windows 2003

    Hi all,
I need more information about reducing physical memory amount on windows 2003 64bit.
I have Front End Exchange Server 2003 with 48 Gb Physical Memory, and i want to reduce physical memory to 16Gb. Is there any impact to exisiting OS or Exchange Server?
    Regards,
    Rengga Patria

    Hi Rengga,
For the impact to the whole operating system, it depends on the server’s workload.
As to the impact to the function of the Exchange Server role, as far as I know, 4 GB of random access memory (RAM) is the maximum amount of memory that an Exchange Server
    computer can efficiently use.
Regarding physical memory and Exchange server 2003, the following articles can be referred to for more information.

In addition, for this is concerning Exchange Server role, in order to get better advice, we can ask for suggestions in the following Microsoft TechNet Exchange Server Forum.

  • How can one use the physical memory of our system rather than virtual memory while running Labview?

We have a Windows NT system with 2 Gb of physical memory and would like to utilize the RAM fully using Labview. What usually occurs is that Labview uses a tremendous amount of page file space while a majority of the physical memory is unused. Is there a way to configure Labview (or our system) to overcome this problem? It seems that our processes would be much faster if they were mainly using the physical memory. Is it possible to trick the system, by creating a RAM disk and allocating this as virtual memory space?

LabVIEW the application doesn't know anything about physical versus
virtual memory. LV asks the OS for general purpose memory and goes
    from there.
Drivers like DAQ and IMAQ will have a combination of general user
    memory and page lo
    cked physical buffers.
I'm not up on the details, but this is something that the OS is in
control of, so that is where you need to look for the solution. One
of the things to look at is the disk cache. By default, I think that
NT takes a percentage of the RAM to use for disk cache. With that
much RAM, this is probably unnecessary and is using too much.
Similarly, the OS may be attempting to keep the working set size
to a fraction of the total RAM to reserve space for other things.
It doesn't make sense to me, but then I don't work for MS.

My iPhoto Library (version 8.1.2) is 280GB (greater than 50% of my 500GB total storage memory on my iMac.  It was too large for me to drag it to a new hard drive so the Apple geniuses did it for me.  However they did not delete the Library from my iMac (that's my responsibility).  I dragged it to Trash and when it started to move I clicked over to the new hard drive to confirm it had indeed been copied.  I became nervous when I didn't see among the few files on this otherwise empty new hard drive anything that resembled a 280GB Library so I cancelled the migration to trash.
How can I be sure that my iphoto has been copied and that all my "metadata" survived in tact?

    the new backup drive
I thought the new drive would be your data drive to host the iPhoto library. Do you also use it for TimeMachine backups?
I am unable to search either in email as well as Finder.  I AM able to search within iPhoto though, thankfully
Spotlight may still be busy rebuildig its index.
You could try to rebuild the Spotlight Index, if you do see no progress:

I hope, other frequent posters will drop in. I have not used iPhoto 8.x in long time.
