Can snow leopard be installed onto current imac

I've had a look at the install SL on a a mac mini thread and I'm still a bit confused about what my options are in a current imac. I spoke to an apple tech guy today and he said I'd need 10.6.3 but I've since found that that info is not correct anyway.
The iMac in question was manufactured a month ago and came with Lion. I'd like to run it with 10.6.8
I can't purchase as a digital download any longer only a posted disk.
The thing is will it be 10.6.8 if I get it from the apple store in Australia, and will it run on a current model iMac 3.4GHz, I don't want to pay $35 for a coaster.
thanks.

An install disc from another machine will not works on yours, nor will an older OS allow itself to br installed over a new one.
Klaus is absolutely correct!

  • Prints too dark since Snow Leopard was installed in my iMac

I have an iMac that is about six years old.  It had Tiger and since I got Snow Leopard installed, the prints are not looking right.  They certainly don't match what I see on the screen.  I have an Epson R1900 and I was very pleased with it and my iMac before.  I have Adobe Lightroom 1.4 and just got Lightroom 3.  I have CS 3, but just downloaded the trial version of CS5 extended.  I have tried upgrading the printer with Epson Common Updater for the R1900.  That file is Epson 14284.dmg.  It came out on 6//21/11.  I also tried one that came out 10/28/09, which is 13523.dmg.  In both cases I get a message saying system/library/extensions apple mobile device.kext installed improperly and can't be used.  The version of my printer is 8.61. The OS version is 10.6.8.
I will call Epson tomorrow.  I tried calling Apple twice now and both techs couldn't help.

I had done exactly that.  I have an Eye-One Display 2 and used it to determine what the brightness was.  I had set it to 116.  It was set at its brightest setting when I got it back from QuadStar, the local Apple repair shop.  The latest prints are closer to what I had with Tiger OS.  I still don't know why I got the Apple Mobile Device messages when I was downloading the two Epson updated drivers and the Apple Software Update.  I'm thinking they were meaningless.  My ITunes works OK.  ??????
    Thanks Hal for your help.

  • Can Snow Leopard be installed on an MBR partition?

I need to make my MacBook run Windows XP and since i don't have a lot of cash right now i'm not going to go buy Windows7.
I have 2 partitions on my Macbook currently. The drive was originally GUID, but i've sliced it in half with Disk Utility and the second half is now MBR.
I then booted from a Windows XP disc and formatted the MBR partition as NTFS and installed Windows.
Windows seems to work fine for me right now.... BUT I'M SCARED!
Window's XP is Not supposed to be able to understand GUID.
When i try and disable Windows "System Restore" from using the GUID-MacOSX partition, it says ERROR. Probably because it doesn't know what the heck is in that partition.
I would feel much safer if i could just Format the whole drive as MBR and then Make 1 partition for OSX and 1 partition for Windows.
Can OSX 10.6.7 be installed on an MBR partition?

Windows doesn't care about the rest of the drive, only it's own partition. It doesn't understand EFI, either. The Mac has to fool Windows into believing a BIOS exists.
What you have right now is fine.

  • How can I create a disk image of snow leopard installer disk from my Imac which runs it?

how can I create a disk image of snow leopard installer disk from my Imac which runs it? It came without DVD installer, and I want to make a copy of it's OS installer but can't find out how.

You need to have the disc in order to create disk image of snow leopard installer disc. What did your machine ship with? If something later than SL, then why? If earlier, then you can buy the SL installer disc and make the disk image.

  • When i try to install snow leopard with install disk, it has me restart the computer instead of installing. can anyone help me figure out how to get the disk to actually install?

when i try to install snow leopard with install disk, it has me restart the computer instead of installing. can anyone help me figure out how to get the disk to actually install?

Ok, it's just a glitch that it's not auto-rebooting from the disk.
Please backup your personal files off the machine to a regualr external drive and disconnect all drives before doing anything
Take the 10.6 disk out and clean and polish the bottom with a very soft clean cloth and a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol to cut the oils.
Stick the disk in and reboot holding c key down, this will make it boot from the disk and you can install Snow Leopard that way.

How can I re-install Snow leopard having installed Lion? The disk supplied states that I cannot use the version of 'Install Mac OS X'...HELP!

None of the instructions usually given for downgrading seems to mention the fact that you will lose some data in built-in applications, including at least Mail. When you installed Lion, your Mail database was converted from the format used by Snow Leopard's Mail to that used by Lion's Mail. There is no way to reverse that conversion. Therefore, you will lose your entire Mail database. If your messages are all stored on a remote server, that may not be an insurmountable problem, but otherwise you'll have to restore from the last backup you made before the upgrade, and then you'll still lose all changes to the database made since that time.
Another fact not often mentioned is that downgrading is usually the worst possible solution to a problem with Lion. But that's the answer to a question you didn't ask.

  • Can snow leopard server work in mac book pro

Can snow leopard server work in mac book pro

I would generally not recommend booting OS X Server natively on an OS X MacBook Pro system or any other portable (because server really wants a static IP for various of its services, and portables tend to wander networks), but it is possible to boot Snow Leopard Server OS X Server 10.6 for certain MacBook Pro systems.
If your MacBook Pro is newer than that list, then 10.6 will not boot on your MacBook Pro directly, but it's possible to install a third-party virtual machine software package onto OS X, and to then load and boot OS X Server 10.6 as a guest within the virtual machine — I'd suspect this is where you're headed here, too.  I'd further guess that you've some old PPC PowerPC software around that requires Rosetta for its operations, as OS X Server 10.6 is one of the ways recommended for accessing that old software.
There are commercial and free virtual machines available for various versions of OS X.

  • Removing Snow Leopard and Installing only Windows on Mini

I've owned my Mac Mini now for about a month; it was my first immersion into OS X and, quite frankly, I do not like it. I do like the physical form of the mini and figured I would just delete Snow Leopard and install Windows 7 (preferably 64 bit) on it.
Can this be done? I don't want to use boot camp and lose all my partitions. I want it to be a Windows only machine.
    Thanks for your time.

David is right. you need boot camp in order to install winsloth on a Mac.
one way to go about that would be to install Mac OS X on an external drive, boot from there and use boot camp assistant to create one big partition on the Mac's startup disk for the winsloth installation.
on the Mac side, use system preferences > startup disk to select which system is used to start up.
nevertheless, i would @ least browse the boot camp forum for user tips on how to best achieve what you want.
    good luck !

  • Safari and other aplications super slow after update to Snow Leopard. Installed the update combo and nothing happened, still super super slow. Any tips to solve this?

After updating to Snow Leopard (to install Lion later), Safari and other aplications became super super slow and Preview is not working properly, I can't print anything that was opened with Preview. Already installed the Combo update, nothing happened, Safari still taking hours to load any site. I honestly regret downloading Snow Leopard, the older version worked so much better... Hope Lion is smarter than Snow Leopard...

  • I have a macbook pro with no OS, original install discs and internet recovery is not working.  Can I purchase an OS (like snow leopard) and install that onto macbook?

I have recently purchased a macbook pro 2011 that does not have original install discs.  The macbook does not currently have an OS and internet recovery does not work.  Am I able to purchase an OS like Snow Leopard that actually has a disc and install it onto this macbook?

  • Can I install Snow Leopard on the new 27" iMac on a separate partition and be able to run either operating systems?

I was able to do this on my older 27" iMac (2010).  I could then hold down the Option key on startup and run either Mountain Lion or Snow Leopard.  I've tried using a Time Machine backup, Carbon Copy Cloner, installing SL from another computer's dvd drive - all to with no success.
Does anyone have any other ideas?

Your 2010 most likely came with SL originally. Your new iMac does not and you have never been able to boot a Mac with an OS version older than what it came with. So, if yours came with Mountain lion, you are stuck with that. The only exceptions have been machines that were manufactured right around the time a new OS was being introduced - those could possibly still boot from the older system.

  • Can OS X Snow Leopard be installed on a MacBook Pro5, 5 with an Intel Core 2 Duo?

This question may already exist somewhere in the support community, but if it is there I have missed it. If not, then here it is for myself and those of this specific inquiry.
I have a MacBook Pro bought in mid-2009, Model MacBookPro5, 5, with an Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, and approximately 140 GB of HD space, which meets the stated requirements for Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks. It is currently running OS X 10.5.8 Leopard, and I am trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard, or, if possible, Mavericks. I have the Snow Leopard CD, and have tried to install it. However, I get the error message "OS X Can't be installed on this computer". I have tried it from my current OS and by booting directly from the CD. I do not have any partitions, and have backed up and erased the existing Macintosh HD volume, but the error message continues.
Can anyone shed some light into what is the issue? If so, much appreciated in advance.

    Remousamavi,
yes, the MacBookPro5,5 (13-inch Mid 2009 MacBook Pro) can run Snow Leopard. In fact, there were two varieties of model-specific grey installation DVDs for that model MacBook Pro: one had Leopard 10.5.7, and the other had Snow Leopard 10.6. (The “Apple disc ID” of the latter is 2Z691-6533-A.)
Do you have the white “upgrade” 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD, or the white “install” 10.6.3 Snow Leopard DVD? If you have the “upgrade” DVD, then it won’t let you install onto an empty partition; you’ll need to have Snow Leopard installed on your boot disk before it will install the upgrade.
Once you’ve got Snow Leopard installed and updated via Software Update to 10.6.8, you’ll be able to install Mavericks.

  • HT5361 I have Snow Leopard on my late model IMac. I downloaded Mountail Lion and paid for it from the Mac Store. It will not install. It takes me through several pages and then button to install is greyed out. A message that this disc is used for Time Mac

I have a late mode IMac 27" running Snow Leopard. I downloaded Mountain Lion from the Apple Store and paid for it. When I trie to install it took me through the first few pages of installation such as agrreeing to terms and the Lion Page showed up asking where I wanted to intall Mountain Lion. The install button was greyed out. I also had a message this disc is used for Time Machine. I had no other disc to choose from. Time Mahine was in the OFF position. I tried hooking up an external drive and tried using it as th Time Machine Backup. That did not work and it also said this disc is used by Time Machine. I have read of several other cases like this but have found no solution other than doinh a complee wipe of the hard drive and doing a reinstall which I really want to avoid if I can.

Look at the root of your hard drive for a folder called Backups.backupdb.
Or, a sparse bundle disk image for one of mobile computers that might have tried to back up to your Mac.
If you have those, remove them and try again.
