Can software instruments recognize MIDI program changes?

I'm trying to send program changes from my Oxygen 49 (blue). I see them register in the transport window in Logic but the patch doesn't change. For example, trying to scroll through different instruments in the sampler would be much faster than having to use the mouse if I could use the + & - buttons on the Oxygen.
All other control surface functions work fine using M-Audio DirectLink—transport, faders, track selection, etc. But not program changes. Any info would be appreciated. I've contacted M-Audio support but they were not helpful--horrible phone support.

Most (if not all) of Logic's plugins do NOT receive program changes, the EXS24II can be setup to use two program changes as a toggle for "Next Instrument" and "Previous Instrument". Set Next Instrument to Prg change 1, Set Next Instrument to Prg change 2.
This way you can select Prg change 1 to select the next instrument, then go back to Prg change 00 on the Oxy49, select PG change 1 again to go to the next instrument.
And so on...
Use the EXS "Options" button, then select Preferences to set this up.

  • Can I make MIDI program changes audible without an external device?

I want to change patches in the middle of a track. I can put MIDI program change events into a track, but I can't hear them.

do you mean to say that you have an audio instrument track in your arrange window and you've recorded a performance there, and you've recorded some program changes that are supposed to change the patch of the plugin, but they are not actually changing that patch?
what is the instrument you're using?
if this is a straight MIDI track, routed to an external device, what is that device?
how did you input the program change?
off the top of my head, i'm guessing this has to do with Program Change Banks . . .
your post was very vague, and not many people will want to respond . . .

  • Is it possible to switch software instruments in mid-track?

Or do you just have to continue the part in a different track with the new instrument?

Thanks, I figured as much. I was hoping there might be a way to do it with MIDI program changes (you can switch instruments if you're driving, say, the QuickTime synthesizer) but that's doubtful, too. Oh well, making another track isn't so bad!

  • Can't figure out MIDI programme change mapping for Gigastudio in Logic

Not sure if this is Logic topic or not. I have GS running on a PC, coming up in Logic. I have been using it for years successfully, but never bothered to activate the programme change boxes in Logic, because GS setups, for me, are always static and never require P. change.
However, now I would like to use this feature, bu it doesn't seem to work logically. I have the P.change boxes all checked in the four, 16-part multi objects in Logic's environment, but when I attempt to use the feature in the arrange page, GS seems to respond randomly. I simply wish to have GS respond in order 1,2,3,4, etc, mapping to Logic's 1,2,3,4,etc., but this is not happening. Could this be a bank select issue? So far none of the ones I have tried work, and GS's manual doesn't seem to cover this at all.
Can anyone shed any light on this please? Thanks.

  • Sending Program Changes to external MIDI device

Just getting started with MainStage, so excuse the basic question . . .
I'd like to use MainStage with two main pieces of hardware – an Elektron Monomachine acting as the master clock and sequencer, and a Machinedrum, which is slaved to the Monomachine. I'm running MainStage to use a soft synth or two sequenced from the Monomachine, and for effects. So far so good.
Patterns on the Machinedrum are selected externally with MIDI Program Changes. Conversely, when you select patterns on the Monomachine, it sends out a Program Change message so that you can lock the two machines together pattern-wise.
In Layout mode, I drop in a rotary knob, hit the Learn button and change patterns three times on the Monomachine; the knob says Program Change and the number of the Program (all correct).
Next, in the Patch editor, I map that screen control to Machinedrum > MIDI Controller > Program Change. If I turn the knob using the mouse, it changes the Program (pattern) on the Machinedrum (all correct).
BUT . . . now (in either Edit or Perform mode) when I change the pattern on the Monomachine (sending a Program Change message), the knob doesn't move. I see the Program Change message being received by MainStage in the MIDI monitor, but it doesn't get routed to the screen control.
What could I be doing wrong? Why does it respond correctly in Learn mode, but then not in Edit or Perform mode?

    Hi
Could it be that MS thinks the incoming PC messages are intended to change MS patches?
In Edit mode, select the Concert in the Patch list, and change the Program Change Device/channel etc in the Attributes Inspector to something other than the Mono

  • Sending Midi Program information from Mainstage

I'm trying to use mainstage to control a variety of midi gear. I want Mainstage to be the master for all the other pieces of equipment. Is this possible? ie I want to select a patch on mainstage and it send out a midi program change to a load of midi equipment and it all change to the same midi program number.
I seem to be only able yo get it to respond to program change data but not create it. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Yes, I'm doing this --- MainStage 2 has explicit support for external MIDI devices....just create external MIDI channel strips and in the attributes for the strip you can send bank and program changes.

  • PCR-500 program change assign Mainstage 3 help

I want to start using Mainstage 3 as part of my live synth setup.
I'm mainly using 'non mainstage'  soft synths (TAL UNO 106/ Arturia prophet). Anyway, i'm trying to assign program change to buttons on my controller. eg A1-JUNO ORGAN    A2..JUNO LEAD   A3 PROPHET  etc.
After assigning the the program changes to each button. If I then press the assigned button,..the preset will be there until i press it again. it will then jump and change the synth to the first default preset (whatever preset begins with the letter A)
I don't seem to have this problem with the included Mainstage synths though. I don't have any problems with midi assigning in Kontakt using the PCR editor, granted i don;t use 'external' synths in Kontakt.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    thank you

As long as you have correctlt assigned MIDI Program Change numbers to each Patch in MS, this ishould work correctly

This sounds like the incoming Prgram Message is being treates as "unused" when you have already selected the MS Patch corresponding to that Program number.
There is a function in MS 3 to allow"unused" program messages to be passed through to the plugins: try turning it off.
Select the Concert at the top of the Patch List, and at the bottom of the Attributes Tab in the Concert Inspector you will see it:

  • Can I use a MIDI keyboard as an input device for a software instrument?

I have a Casio CTK-2100 that I am currently playing around with in Logic Pro 9. It can record and playback the different instruments fine using MIDI tracks. But I was wondering if it is possible to use the keyboard as an input device for a software instrument instead of the "Step Input Keyboard".
Is it? If so, how do I set it up?

Yes, the terminology can be a bear, many, many years ago when I started using Logic the manuals were written completely by the programmers, while they were quite humorous in places the were also really hard to understand so I learned/realized.. you can't really do anything so wrong it's going to destroy your computer so why not go ahead and experiment. I learned the basics of Logic without a manual, months later when I went back to find some some details I could figure out the manual made a lot more sense.
Logic has been somewhat Appleized but it's not really an Apple program, it was purchased almost as developed as it is now... a lot of the additions a fluff to make it easier to understand for new users while at the same time there are some real improvements.
This is personal opinion: With all of the forums/online tutorials...etc...etc. It seems users are learning (but not understanding) the same things, plus everyone wants to use it right away so nobody takes a deep breath and investigates on their own. Logic is a deep, deep program, while learning don't be afraid to go off on a tangent and explore the program without any other input, it can actually be inspirational. One other thing good about the manual or "Online Help", in looking up a function you will invariably come across a related concept that will provide further insight.
    And..... have fun.

  • Can't hear Midi Software Instrument & Audio won't record

I have used Logic in a basic way for years and have never had trouble but I reinstalled logic onto a new macbook and using a new interface.
On launching a new project, I selected software instrument, and chose a yamaha piano studio. I can see that the MIDI signal is being received in Logic and will record but I cannot hear any sound.
When audio track is selected, I can hear the sounds being picked up from the microphone in my headphones and can see it on logic...but when I try to record, no sound is recorded.
Is this to do with output settings?
I know its probably something very straightforward but I have been searching the forums for hours and can't seem to resolve.
    Interface: PreSonus AUDIOBOX USB.
My keyboard (YAMAHA P-80) is connected correctly to the audiobox which in turn is connected to the computer.

you're recording MIDI, not audio, you can't "pre-amp" the digital signal.
you can raise the instrument volume a bit more:

  • I do not see the user interface for the Logic software instruments. I can hear them play through my midi keyboard but I cannot see them to adjust parameters. Please advise.

I do not see the user interface for the Logic Pro software instruments. I can hear them play through my midi keyboard but cannot see them to adjust the parameters. Please advise.

Couple of things - you can open the interface for any instrument or plug-in by double-clicking its insert slot on the channel strip. You can configure Logic to automatically open the interface for a plug-in when you first instantiate it in the preferences. Go to Logic Pro > Preferences > Display > Mixer, and check the box for "Open plug-in window on insertion".

  • Can you import software instruments and plug-ins  from Logic Pro to GB

    Hello,
I purchased Logic 7 Pro and I find it to be way too much for me. Is there a way to take the software instruments from Logic to GB? I am not even sure Logic comes with more software instruments than GB. Do they both rely on the Jam Packs for additional instruments.
Is there anything else GB can borrow from Logic. I know I can move the sound effects aif files and use them. Just wondering about other plug-ins and the like.
    Thanks!!
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Here's how you get past the static interruption.
Make your software track and ignore the static interruption. Its not being recorded into the midi information.
Then export the track out and reimport it to a new track. Do this twice. Your export/import WILL have static in it but since it was random your two tracks will not have the static in identical places.
Edit out the static in track one by replacing it with a static-less portion from track two. You'll now have a complete loop with no static interruption.
xs4sis. The cool thing about the demos is you don't have to program anything just use the presets. Who CAN program those **** synths anyway?
There are some demos that have a hundred presets to them. I love that!

  • ITunes no longer recognizes midi files how can I play and convert them?

iTunes 10.3 recognised midi files, I could "move" them to the iTunes library and select them. then click on "Advanced" and "Convert to AAC" (or to MP3 etc).
iTunes 10.5 will not recognise midi files.
I think an older version of GarageBand could also read and convert midi files, but this no longer appears to be the case either in the latest version.
How can I now convet midi files? Has Apple decided to simply ignore them?

Thanks to Limnos, I now have some further things to try, but in the meantime I found I had been maligning GarageBand 11. Indeed its built-in Help system doesn't seem to mention Midi files at all, but I found out how to insert them from Apple's on-line support system at http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2009 and it works superbly well - one can even change the instruments on individual channels etc and then save the lot as an AAC (m4a) or mp3 etc file.
I also loaded up an old version of iTunes, version 10.3, which still recognises Midi files and can convert them to AAC or mp3 but in so doing some volume seems to be lost.
But the winner so far for me has been Audacity, free software. One needs to add a LAME encoder for mp3 output, I installed Soundflower and routed the playback of the midi file available in the Finder (in fact for the whole machine, while playing the midi file) and declared Soundflower as the input for Audacity. I could then use Audacity's effects menu to increase the volume throughout the track and save it. I then, using the Sound preferences of the machine, switched back to the inbuilt speakers and was able to listen to a higher volume version, playable in iTunes 10.5. More faithful to the original midi file than the GarageBand version.
See instructions at http://ask.brothersoft.com/tags/convert-midi-to-mp3/ and in particular one of the links http://ask.brothersoft.com/how-to-convert-a-midi-to-a-mp3-using-audacity-26125.h tml
This is for Windows but for Mac it's very similar/ - still Audacity. BUT the instructions in the last link don't seem to quite work, which is why I had to use Soundflower. I can import the midi file, I can select it, but then the export item on the file menu remains greyed out and unuseable, so I must presumably be missing some plug-in. Also Audacity keeps telling me it can't find various ffmpeg files even though I thought I had installed them correctly. I'm obviously missing something here, but at least I can now get my midi files into aac or mp3 format again at last.
For Soundflower see http://cycling74.com/soundflower-landing-page/ and http://kineme.net/forum/General/soundflowerforlion
and there is a useful tutorial by Nowjobless on YouTube at
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3FGOIW08gA&feature=related
Good luck to anyone else facing the same problems, it remains to be seen how to "convert" midi files to mp3 in Audacity without recourse to Soundflower.

  • Does noboby know!!! program changes in logic with kontakt3 instrument banks

    Hi all.
im having real trouble understanding program changes from the events list in logic pro in conjunction with Kontakt 3.
i have a region playing a bar of a violin legato then a bar of staccato then a bar of tremolo (just for example) using kontakt 3.
i have created a new instrument bank in K3 and loaded violin legato on 001, staccato on 002 and tremolo on 003 of the K3 instrument slots.
its from here that i just dont understand and find the logic manual useless as usual.... how can i get it to change??? firstly, nothing is selected in the program change events list... i havnt changed anything yet... fair enough but how can i write it in, so to speak, from this point??? it wont let me write any new number change and basically wont let me do anything.
i messed aroud with this for hours without much luck and when i could get it to change it was giving me strange instument names like grand piano etc
so i guess iv really missed somthing here
    any help??

    Mac OS X (10.5.5)

I forget how to write them PG changes in, but what I do, is make a program change from your master keyboard while recording into Logic..Then go in and look at the note edit list to make sure it's correct. Change number if you need. The bank select always overwhelmed me, so I never dealt with that either.
Another approach would be to create a 2nd patch in Kontakt, and have it respond to a different midi channel, then change the midi channel on your event list, or perform from master kbd that is set to appropriate midi channel

  • Seperate my midi keyboard with two or more software instruments

How can I seperate my midi keyboard with two or more software instruments?

Sorry I was not clear in my story. I do understand the concept of MIDI transferring info and not actual sound. The problem is, I record a string pad from my keyboard onto GB (with a USB connection) but then I open a new track to record along with it using an electric piano sound (also from my keyboard, not from GB's internal sound). But when I record the new E. Piano part onto the song, it automatically converts the original string pad part that has been recorded into an E. Piano sound.
My question is this. Is GB not able to recognize two separate sounds or does it apply the same MIDI message to all software tracks? I find it odd that it would not let you record two or more different sounds onto the same song.
