Can Solaris 11 support Solaris 8/9 container?

Dear all,
I am new to Solaris 11. I know that Solaris 10 SPARC can support Solaris 8/9 container.
So, Can Solaris 11 SPARC support Solaris 8/9 container?
Wait for your feedback.
Mike

Hi Mike
For future reference, this may not be the best forum to use for Solaris Zones related questions... but, in this case, legacy branded zones (Solaris 8, Solaris 9, and Linux) are only supported on Solaris 10. This is documented here: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23824_01/html/E24456/glhcg.html

I set OBP diags-switch? true with diag-level set to max but no problems are reported.
Sun says the NetraX1 supports Solaris-10 but are there any caveats. It seems strange that the latest version of OBP dates to 2002. Am I trying to 'push a string' by upgrading this machine or am I doing something stupid? Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Note that the Solaris-10-u8 imaged is one I downloaded from Sun and made my own DVD but the 10/08 distribution is genuine Sun media, they both fail with the same messages.

I've tried a few other things like creating the user account in lom and most significantly tried hooking up a DVD reader in place of the second disk. The OBP must not have the driver for reading CD/DVD's as it simply wouldn't recognize the drive although I can if I boot the system from the disk under Solaris-8 and mount the CD/DVD drive.
Is there any possibility that the obp on the machine just can't handle Solaris-10?
I tried booting over the net with a mounted DVD on the host machine and using the -v switch and got the following. Can anyone interpret what's happening here? I've edited out the redundant stuff. The DVD I'm trying to boot from is a genuine Sun made DVD and not a downloaded image.

  • Which 10g release supports Solaris x86 version 10?

    Hi,
I downloaded Oracle 10.1.0.3 for Solaris x86. When I installed it, I got error, saying I can only install this version on Solaris 9 x86. Do you have any idea which Oracle 10g version supports Solaris x86 version 10?
    Thanks
    L

    Hi,
If we believe metalink, Oracle 10gR1 is already certified for Solaris x86
Solaris Operating System x86 Version 10
Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition Version 10g
    Status: Certified
    Certification Note:
    Install Information:
o 1. Execute runInstaller with the -ignoreSysPrereqs option.
o 2. Select 'Do not create a starter database' when installing Oracle 10g.
o 3. During installation, the warning message 'SUNWsprox package not installed' can be ignored. Press Continue to resume the installation.
o 4. Download and install patch 4186426 from metalink.oracle.com after installing Oracle 10g software.
o 5. If you have an End User Solaris 10 distribution, install the SUNWuiu8 package prior to installing the 10g client.
Have you run installer like recommended in point 1 ?
For 10gR2, you need to wait december for certification.
    Nicolas.

  • We can't install Solaris 8 - IBM PC SERVER 315

    Hello:
We are trying to install Solaris 8 (Intel) (02/02) in an IBM PC Server 315.
    Some words about it:
    - 128 Mb RAM
    - Pentium Pro 200 Mhz
    - Adaptec AHA-2940U/2940UW Ultra SCSI in PCI bus1,Slot 4 (Info from Solaris install) (Target 7)
    - Hard Disk IBM SCSI (Target 0)
    - CD-Rom SCSI IBM CDRM00203 (Target 6 of SCSI) (info from Solaris install)
    We have a big problem.
We can't install Solaris from CD.
After Loading kernel , when it begins Searching /dev and /devices...we see this text in the screen repeated a lot of times:
    WARNING: /pci@0,0/pci1011,24@2/pci9004,8178@1(adp0):
    timeout: abort device, target=6 lun=0
And before this something like it has some problem and begins a resinc ??
    Please Could you help us?
Solaris has been purchased from Sun on 12 March 2002
    A lot of Thank's!
P.D: Please, excuse my poor English.
    A lot of thank's.

two other severs wouldn't run the cd either? Break it down a little it will be more solvable. We will create two separate problems with this. First we will check the cd disk itself. Put in another system and install solaris. If that works, move to the cdrom drive....move it to the same computer you just installed solaris on...if it works then it is another problem.

  • Solaris 10 08/06 version container  within Solaris 10 05/08 global zone

I have the need to run Solaris 8 , Solaris 9 and even Solaris 10 (08/06) containers within my Solaris 10 05/08 global T5120. No problem with the branded Solaris 8 nad Solaris9, but I'm not sure how to create a native Solaris 10 (older version 06) to run on the newer version Solaris 10 05/08. Do I have to create the global zone with the older 06 version of Sol 10? hmm?

The minimum supported version for a 5120 is Solaris 10 8/07.
And they wouldnt say that without a good reason.
Its pretty silly of a software vendor to specify a particular version of Solaris 10.
Unless they mean that version or later.
I mean suppose its certifed for Solaris 10 8/06 and you start with that.
Then you run smpatch and apply all available patches.
What you end up with is virtually indistinguishable from Solaris 10 5/08 anyway.
So unless, they certify a specific version and also specify the set of patches you are allowed to apply.
Then the restriction is virtually meaningless.
Personally I suggest you just go with Solaris 5/08 and be done with it.
As far as I know, theres no way for you to use the "earlier" version without buying new hardware.
The closest you could come is to run it on a solaris 9 zone.

  • Can I use Solaris with my Home Recording Studio?

    Hello,
I am currently building a basic home recording studio. I recently assembled a new computer and will be purchasing music recording equipment very soon. Before I purchase the audio recording gear, I was curious about a few things pertaining to the use of Solaris as my possible choice system.
The data that I store on my hard drives will need to be secure. I had originally considered RAID 5 though recently found out about RAID Z, which appears to be far ahead of the other RAIDs. I am curious to know more about how to set up a RAID Z system.
The computer will be running Solaris, various Linux or BSD, and Windows Vista. I have 500GB x4 hard drives. I am considering separating one and using it strictly for Vista, and using the remaining 3 with a RAID set-up for nix. If I had a choice, I would put much less hard drive space into Vista (capping it at 150 to 200 GB), though I have yet to come across a RAID system that effectively or efficiently cooperates cross-platform. With that in mind, the majority of the remaining 1.5TB can go into my studio OS - hopefully Solaris - while left-over hard drive space is set aside for various other *nix.
I've used Solaris 10 before, though haven't really gone into detail on the mechanics of such features as ZFS, zones, now RAID Z, and the many more amazing features that Solaris provides. Likewise, I am not really familiar with how well the system might operate with software/applications that I could use for recording and composing music.
Beyond the available 2TB (or 1.5TB RAID-ready) space, my computer is running on a new 64-bit quad-core AMD CPU (~2.6GHz) and currently has 4GB 1066MHz RAM. In my search for preparing a computer that suits me for high performance recording - including the editing and mastering of audio - I am attempting to narrow down my options on the software side of things. I have been very satisfied with the general file management of Solaris, though am unsure of how well it might run as the software side of a home recording studio. An additional factor in deciding will be the software's compatbility with audio PCI cards and external recording/audio interfaces. There is always a question of whether or not the necessary drivers, firmware, or similar is available between any given hardware and software components.
Some other *nix options I have considered - "Ubuntu Studio 64-bit" (though it appears to prefer 32-bit) and "64 Studio" (also Debian-based, though appears to be optimized for 64-bit). Some colleagues have used Gentoo with studio applications, though I don't know of any Linux distributions that offer the versatility, power, stability, and efficiency of Solaris for the operating system that it is.
If I use something like "64 Studio", I will have the advantage of a system that is ready-built for studio recording purposes as well as a system that I know is compatible with the sound gear that I am considering purchasing. However, those systems are restricted by their file system types, RAID availability and dependability, and the general disadvantages of using the Linux kernel in general. (I enjoy Linux, though I admittedly prefer Unix over it.)
Can I use Solaris with my home recording studio?
    Thank you!

    Caught another typo.

I'm not sure what your question is. If you have particular software you want to run, you should see what you can get that package to run under. Sound hw stuff don't tend to be too portable unless it's written on top of OSS (htttp://www.opensound.com). Were I you, I'd consider separating out the storage part and the processing part. Get something like a cheap dell sc440 to be a file server and give the drives to that (unless you actually can get all the components working under solaris).
