Can someone clarify iCloud storage vs device storage

Can someone clarify iCloud storage vs device storage

iCloud storage serves a single purpose. To store backups of your device in the cloud. That's it, you have no direct access to it other than when performing a backup or restoring a device from one.
You don't store purchases there or  rentals, or anything bought from the stores. The backups contain the data from your currently installed Apps though, which is why they can be very big. Any files in your Apps will be stored automatically in the backup.
The reason to purchase more iCloud storage is if you have say more than one device or one with lost of stuff, then the backup may be very large and not fit in the default 5GB.
Backing up to your PC is essentially the same as iCloud except you are only limited by the amount of Hard drive space on your computer.

  • HT4847 can you share icloud storage space with a family member?

I used to have MobileMe family, and my wife and I are now both receiving alerts that we are running out of icloud space. Can you buy a shared icloud plan?
    Thanks

If you are both using the same Apple ID, then you can share the iCloud storage that you have. However sharing an Apple ID for iCloud is not really recommended, it results in confusion over contacts, calendar, notes etc etc.

  • Can someone clarify the syncing restrictions for all iPods? (minus shuffle)

I currently have two libraries. When I sync my iPod with music, movies or tv shows from one library, if I try to sync from my other library requesting to sync with any of the three types, it overwrites all three. One library only has music and the other library has everything else (movies, tv shows, podcasts, etc.)
It does not overwrite my podcasts or pictures, however. Is this because of a DRM issue? Can someone clarify the syncing restrictions or point to an article about this?
Can someone also clarify if it is possible to sync my music from one library and sync my tv shows/movies without erasing my music? I am already aware of the possibility of manually managing my music and videos, but I need to sync my music for the ratings and play count.
    Thanks in advance.

I have one library in my internal hard drive and I have one on an external drive. I don't have my external drive everywhere I go, so I put all the media I want to access in my internal library. They take up a significant amount of space, so I would like to keep them separate.

Buy a retail Snow Leopard DVD. After installing that, you can upgrade to Lion if you wish.

  • HT201238 How can I purchase iCloud storage as a gift for someone ?

I Want to purchase iCloud storage for someone as a gift.. Is that possible

The problem with this that it isn't a one-off payment. You have to give a credit card number, and then the monthly subscription is taken automatically until you cancel it. The credit card number would be the one in iTunes, so you couldn't use yours but then have theirs used to purchase songs or movies. Probably the only way would be for you to just give them the money, which isn't the nicest way of giving a gift.

  • Can I share iCloud storage with my family share?

looking to upgrade my storage but 200gb is a little excessive for me. Can I share that with my wife who is linked with me in my family share?

Perhaps you should read these Apple documents about what is stored by iCloud.  The following is from this Apple document: iCloud: iCloud storage and backup overview:
Your iCloud account includes 5 GB of free storage for iCloud Mail, Documents in the Cloud, and your iOS device backups. Your purchased music, apps, books, and TV shows, as well as your photo stream, don’t count against the 5 GB of free storage ........
    Here’s what iCloud backs up:
Purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps, and booksPurchased music isn’t backed up in all countries. Purchased movies and TV shows are backed up only in the U.S. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore. Some previously purchased movies may not be available in iTunes in the Cloud. A movie’s product details page in the iTunes Store shows if the movie is unavailable.

  • Can I upgrade iCloud storage using iTunes cards for payment?

I have chosen not to use my credit card in conjunction with my AppleID, so I purchase all of my apps and media using iTunes cards.  Can I pay for upgraded iCloud storage using iTunes credits?  I would prefer to pay one year at a time using those credits, but if it needs to be monthly, that would be fine as well.  I just want to use the iTunes cards instead of a credit card for the payment.

Thank you.  So to clarify, if I put a credit card on file for this AppleID, but I have plenty of iTunes credit to cover the monthly cost, then the monthly fee will be pulled from iTunes credits instead of my credit card.  Is that correct?
It sounds like the credit card is required in order to provide a backup payment option if the iTunes credits are all used up.  Is that also correct?
You're awesome!! Thanks for the help.

  • Can I use iCloud storage to upgrade my 4s to IOS 8.0.2?

IOS 8.0.2 won't install on my iPhone 4S due to a lack of storage. My current iCloud storage amount is 4.8GB. The update requires 4.7GB of storage to update. Can I use the iCloud storage to upgrade the phone? If so how do I set that up?

  • Can i pay iCloud storage by voucher

I have a USA iTunes account but do not have a USA CC. Can i use apple vouchers to pay for iCloud storage?

Not sure what you mean by vouchers, but here is what Apple says about paying for iCloud Storage:
Accepted payment methods for iCloud storage upgrades include credit cards, debit cards, and iTunes Store credit. If you don't have enough iTunes store credit to complete your upgrade, you'll be charged the remaining amount. Apple Store gift cards aren't accepted as payment for upgrading iCloud storage. • Can i upgrade icloud storage for secondary account?

My secondary account is used mostly for email.  I deleted a ton of them but somehow am still voer the 5GB limit.
I'm willing to pay the $100 upgrade to get rid of the hassle, but is theere a way to upgrade icloud storage for your secondary account?

You would probably have to temporarily make the secondary account the primary account to upgrade it.  To do this, go to System Preferences>Mail,Contacts,Calendars...delete the secondary account, then go to System Preferences>iCloud, sign out of your primary account and choose Delete at all of the prompts (your data will still be in iCloud), then sign back in with your secondary account ID and upgrade the storage.
After upgrading the secondary account storage, reverse the procedure to assign the primary and secondary accounts back the way they were.
