Can someone recommend a monitor

I have a PB AL 1.67ghz. I want to get an inexpensive 17-19 inch monitor to use at the desk with it.
Can someone recommend a good monitor. Not looking to spend to much.$200-$300 if possible.
Thanks

Hi musicmaker --
You know the drill, the whole cost versus features versus what you need it for calculus, etc., but I have a friend who just picked up a Dell 17" for $279, and she likes it very much as sort of an all around utility monitor. Macworld gave a pretty good review too: http://www.macworld.com/2006/04/reviews/dell1707fp/index.php
Something to consider.

  • Can someone recommend a replacement hard drive for my June 2009 17"MBP?

I need at least 750GB. My current HD is 500GB but I only have 90GB remaining as I have a lot of videos stored on the machine. Can someone recommend a HD that has at least 750GB of space and performs well with a 17"MBP?

If you are expecting to copy commercial, theatrical DVDs to any hard drive, DVDs are copy protected and you will find that no computer will let you copy copy-protected commercial DVDs.
If your movies are purchased downloads from other sources like iTunes or Ultraviolet digital copies, then you will be able to make a limited number of copies for backup and storage onto an external hard drive
There are ways to overcome this issue, but we are not allowed to discuss anything about DVDs that can break that copy protection.
So, no one in these forums will be able to help you with that issue.
You will have to do your own Internet searches for your own solutions to this issue.

True to the extent that out of the box they indeed will not work with Macs other than Airs and Retinas.  However a minor modification WILL make them compatible with other Macs.  Here are the instructions:

Thus it is a valid choice for consideration.

  • Can someone recommend a nice 27" monitor for my 15"Macbook Pro

    Hi,
my boss just bought me a 27" Apple display for work.  I will also be working from home and would like to get another 27" for there - while I would love to get another Apple display, the cost prohibits this.
I was looking at the Viewsonic VX2739WM any thoughts on this or other recommendations - Thanks,

I can't recommend a 27" because I do not own one.  That said, I own a Samsung Syncmaster 2493HM for a couple of years now which I bought used and I am quite happy with it (running in DVI via thunderbolt/mini display port).  It also has VGA and HDMI inputs.
I would check NewEgg.com for reviews.  If you have the money to cough up, the apple displays are as sweet as pie....

  • Can someone recommend a car stereo to connect my ipod too?

have a 99 camry, have tried tape to ipod and fm trasnmittor to ipod, both are very poor quality, would like to replace my current cd player with one that directly connects to an ipod, hopefully within $100-$150 range
    can anyone recommend one?

Contact Mercedes if you want to use the dock connector for the the input to the car system. Does Mercedes say it is compatible with your model iPod and its iOS version?
Have you looked at the previous discussions listed on the right side of this page under the heading "More Like This"?
You can get a cable that goes from the headphone jack and an AUX in on the car system if the car system has such an input.

  • Can someone explain activity monitor?

Can someone tell me the difference between
    active memory
    wired memory
    inactive memory?
I have 2gb's of mem but I am getting a few page outs. It says I am using 1.96 GB's of memory but I only have Parallels (384mb given to it) and mail, safari open?? Over 900MB's of memory are "inactive" but I don't understand what that means.

    Wired memory
This information can't be cached to disk, so it must stay in RAM. The amount depends on what applications you are using.
    Active memory
This information is currently in RAM and actively being used.
    Inactive memory
This information is no longer being used and has been cached to disk, but it will remain in RAM until another application needs the space. Leaving this information in RAM is to your advantage if you (or a client of your computer) come back to it later.

  • I want to I create PDFs on my new Macbook Pro, can someone recommend a good software program via apple store?

I want to create PDFs on my new Mac Pro, can someone recommed a download from Apple IStore?

The Mac OS has built-in PDF generation. Anthing you can print, you can create a PDF.
In some apps like Preview, you can do "Save as..." to create the PDF:
In other apps you have PDF options at the bottom left of the "Print..." dialog box:
Basically you have no need to spend money to create simple PDFs.

  • Can someone recommend wireless hotspots that have uPnP or NAT-PMP?

    I have a 2014 Macbook Pro.
I was just provided a new Verizon Jetpack MiFi 6620L.
When trying to connect via Back To My Mac, the connection constantly goes into "Reconnecting" mode.
Further reading indicates that the "router" that I connect to should have uPnP or NAT-PMP capability.  The Jetpack has neither.
Could someone recommend a wireless card or help be get my configuration correct so the connection remains more stable?
    TIA - Jp

I should have been more precise in what I'm looking for.  The Verizon Jetpack is a broadband wireless card that acts like a router.  It is not a standard router as was previously suggested.

  • Can someone recommend good settings for HC Encoder?

    Hi all,
I have an SD, 25p 16:9 movie that I wish to encode for burning to DVD.  Now, it is an .avi that was made with Avisynth.  I wish to know what settings you recommend while using HC Encoder.  I just want to minimize loss of quality and be able to put the .m2v into Encore.
I have searched the web many times trying to find this answer but there seems to be little documentation/tutorials for this encoder.
I would appreciate any help with this.  Thanks!

    Hi,
the language used is not important. Ideally it would be explained in a language independent way :)
What's most important is that I get to understand beyond just cutting and pasting. I understand vectors and trigonometry and basic algebra and a little physics so a book that would assume a person is rusty in these areas would be great. hmm maybe I need to buy some school text books!!!!
I found the following books below if someone has read one and can help me decide which to buy that would be great. Otherwise I'll have to buy all 4!

  • Can someone recommend a NAS device that works well with Macs?

I need to have a NAS (network attached storage) device that can be freely accessed by windows and mac computers. I rashly purchased an HP Mediavault; it was only $300 and has 2 500GB drives that I configured as raid-1 for safety. however if I load up a folder with 4000 files in it and browse to that directory, the mac finder thinks about this for say 30 seconds before it lists the files. The Windows machine can view the files in perhaps 4 seconds. I know that Macs have a slow file system but watching the little light blink on the NAS box and waiting so long is getting real annoying. Has anyone found a box that works well with macs and has good performance? These devices are so cheap now they must have crappy processors and stupid firmware. Perhaps someone can recommend a model that has some snap. I also need remote access via the web, and the insane HP software can only upload single files, can't upload a folder, which when you are working with 30,000 files like I am is no fun at all!

It's not really the brand as it is available printer drivers. Just be sure you verify that there is an available OS X printer driver.
OS X- Printer and scanner software available for download
Check the manufacturer's website for available printer drivers for any model in which you are interested.

  • Can someone recommend a font style?

I was just wondering if anyone can recommend a font which is typically American or one which has a American feel/look? I don't know if such a thing exists - I have not properly checked yet!
    Any suggestions much appreciated!
    Many thanks in advance!
    Adam

    Adam,
As a designer, I also need more information to respond.
There are posters and handbills from the mid-19th century that were frequently done in decorative woodtype that are highly distinctive and very American. These are the familiar "Wanted!" posters of the American West, railroad "travel" posters and theatre production posters. But as we move into the 20th century, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Art Moderne, Bauhaus and other styles become more international in their scope and choices of fonts.
So, can you tell us more what you're looking for? And what time period?
    Neil

  • Can someone recommend an AU Compressor for my needs...

So... I've never particularly enjoyed Logics compressor but I use it all the time because I don't have anything else. However I really would like to invest in something for a project I'm doing (AU obviously), and for the longer term.
I'm certainly not looking for a harsh/heavy compressor as I rarely make music that warrants it, so I would like something largely suited for acoustic music, strings/acoustic guitar etc. A also like a bit of color, perhaps tube warmth or something but again, not over the top.
Obviously the Universal Audio stuff looks amazing but I don't have the funds for that, so something in the lower price bracket. Free stuff is good too, but not sure if I'll get what I want that way. Any thoughts recommendations welcome. Cheers Sidx

    Yes thanks again people...
I didn't mean to bad mouth Logics compressor, as I said I use it all the time... I just fancy something different, something with a different character.
I'll try and download some demos and try a few of these out when I get a minute.
Definitely. Dynamics processors are for sure one of the things you can't have too many of. There are always going to be your go-to ones that you rely on for the nuts and bolts of your work, but it's great to have different colours and flavours on hand. Even some el-cheapo ones sometimes turn out to be just the thing for certain sounds, so if you're feeling sick of the sight of the Logic compressor (even if it is quite good for a lot of things), you may as well grab every free or almost free one you like the sound of. All the big names (Waves, Universal Audio etc) seem to be all about selling big bundles these days. While being good "value", it often means that just picking up a single compressor or other effect can be too pricey to buy into, and you end up putting it off because you know that you save money when you eventually decide to pick up a whole package. So it can be a great stop-gap to do the rounds of the smaller guys. KVR is a good site to get a quick roundup of everything that's out there.

  • Can anyone recommend good monitors?

    Hi all,
I'm looking for monitors for my mini studio. I haven't got a very good room, soundwise, but compared to mixing through headphones, monitors are a lot better. I run my little studio on a Mac mini, using LE7, doing mostly remixes and some additional production, so my level isn't professional, rather 'advanced hobby'.
Also, I'm not TOO fuzzy with having the perfect pair, I just want to them to make more justice than the headphones.
The price range I had in mind is ±20 % of 3500 SEK, 250 GBP, 430 USD.
    Any suggestions?

My advice: save up until you can afford to get proper monitors. You do yourself no favours with low to mid-range monitors, which is what you'd be looking at in that price range.
I agree with the previous poster that for a small room, a 5" woofer is plenty sufficient.
I would suggest you save up for the current model KRK V4. They are not cheap (about $800/pair), but they are GREAT monitors, with plenty of bass, and a nice, even response.
Monitor quality does not increase linearly with price. At the low end, a little extra cash does not buy you much higher quality. But once you get above a certain threshold, then you're talking about a serious upgrade. For me, the KRK V4 is right at that threshold.
