Can superdrive record to a blu-ray disk? (iMac mid 2010 intel).

Can superdrive record to a blu-ray disk?

According to Roxio, you can; however, you will need an external bluray burner.

This product says that it has the software needed (Toast with the bluray plugin).

  • External Blue Ray Disk Drive and T61, Or is one available for the Ultra Bay yet?

    Hello All,
I was wondering if anyone has a Blue Ray Disk Drive connected to there T61? Can the T61 handle a Blue Ray Disk Drive? The reason I am asking is because I was thinking of getting one for my T61 and then playing Blue Ray movies thru my LCD TV, the LCD TV being monitor #2. Would the quality be as good as a normal Blue Ray player that is hooked to the TV? My graphics card is Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M. Thank you for in advance for any advice on this.
    Cheers,

  • 2011 MacBook Pro shuts down while working with blu ray disks

I am trying to backup my blu ray disks to digital formats in the event that a disk is damaged. I am using an early 2011 MacBook Pro with OSX 10.8.5 with a Samsung SE-506 external blu ray writer. I have been using handbrake to rip DVD's, but downloaded Make MKV to handle blu rays. I successfully ripped one blu ray disk last night. Once before that, and four times after, the computer shut down after failing to read the disk. When it restarts, a gray screen reports that the computer experienced and error and had to shut down. I believe this has something to do with the fact that OSX does not natively support blu ray disks. The disk drive is plugged into one of two USB slots in the computer. The other slot has a USB hub with two external hard drives and some other devices connected to it.
So far, the computer has failed to recognize the disk, and nothing comes up in Make MKV. The last time I tried, the computer recognized the disk, Make MKV read it and showed the titles. When I tried to rip the disk, the process failed. After another attempt, the computer shut down. This has never happened while using the original disk drive, or while using DVD's in the external drive.
I spoke with Samsung support, and they have no record of this being a problem. So, where do I go from here? I have quite a few disks to rip, so I am hoping this issue can be resolved. I have searched around, but cannot find any information on this problem happening to someone else.

    Hi lilliputian apple,
If you are having issues with your Mac spontaneously shutting down, especially with externally connected hardware, you may find the following article helpful:
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."

  • Burning blu-ray disks with Archgon

I have a HD camcorder and create home movies of my daugher with FCP X. I have an iMac (late 2012 model I think).  I recently purchased the Sea Tech Archgon blu-ray writer super drive with the intent of buring blu-ray disks for the grandparents.  The instruction manual for the blu-ray player states "Please purchase and download appropriate blu-ray playback software for Mac OS".  My questions are:
    1) When I plug in the drive, no icon appears on the desktop.  There is power to the unit because it allows me to open and put a disk in.
    2) Do I need to purchase Mac Blu-Ray player just for the iMac to see the drive before I can burn any blu-ray disks?
    3) I don't intend to use the drive to watch any blu-ray movies.  This is strictly for making blu-ray disks that can be popped into a regular blu-ray player so the grandparents and other relatives can enjoy the home movies.
    4) Is FCP X an appropriate software, which I already have on my computer?  It allows me to create DVD directly from FCP X, but when I tried to do it from FCP X, this drive does not come up as an option.
    5) I also have Titanium Toast and purchased the blu-ray upgrade.  Then I save the file from FCP as a master on the computer and attempted to burn the blu-ray using Toast.  Again, this drive does not come up as an option.

    1. Any external burner will only become recognized once you insert media. If you plug it into the Mac and launch Toast, it should show at the bottom of the Toast window. You can choose it and control the drive with Toast - open tray, close tray, insert DVD, etc.
    2. No.
    4. Not sure re. blu-ray, but try to export it as a .mov or Video_TS folder, then drag either into the Toast window. That is how I proceed using iMovie and/or iDVD. (I only use FCE for special effects/layered intros, etc., export at best quality settings, then use those with iMovie and/or iDVD). You do need software (Toast is best because of the blu-ray plugin) to burn to DVD.
    5. Again, the drive should show up at the bottom - see screenshot (mine is only showing my internal Superdrive; once I attach my external burner, both will show up):

  • Can i upgrade to a blu ray drive

I have a late 07 macbook 13" (white) and have been looking into upgrading the optic drive, since the one in it cant even write dvds. So i pondered why not go all the way and instead of getting an external drive get an internal drive. and on top of that make it blu ray r + rw ive found a couple af resonably priced drives, but now ive come to the Question ,  is it possible to do to my macbook being that it is so old. I am runing lion so im assuming it can read a blu ray disk and burn them but is my computer able to. What do i do i have the know how to install it on my on but i just need a link to an internal blu ray r + rw drive that is compatable with my computer and if there even is one.

PLEASE HELP ME ALL I WANT IS TO PLAY AND WRITE BLU RAY DISKS ON MY MACBOOK, AND TO KNOW IF I'LL HAVE TO SUCK IT UP AND BUY AN UGLY EXTERNAL BLU RAY DRIVE OR KEEP A NICE CLEAN SLEAK LAPTOP WITH INTERNAL BLU RAY DRIVE!!!

I don't know if it will work with a 2007 but I do know that the optical drive in it has an IDE interface not a SATA. So any Blu-Ray drive would have to be IDE.

  • Device error when burning Blu Ray disk at 96%

Very simple program to use so far. Just drag and drop.
My current project was shot in HD 1080p about 2 hours or 13 gig long and I made 4 lower resolution DVD's no problem.  I like how it shrunk it with out me having to do anything other than check the box (use space available)
However when I went to make Blu Rays in addition to taking about 18 hours its gets right to the end and spits the disk out unfinished and has device error at about 96% of burning finished. Disk will not play.
I have ruined 3 blank  4x blu ray disks so far, same result.  I have down loaded and installed the 8.01 update, I will turn off the screen saver and anything else I can find, before I try it again.
Its a new computer with only PE8 running on it.  Quad core Gateway with 8 gig ram and a almost empty 1tb hard drive and LG blue ray writer.
I have not tried to burn anything else with the blu ray writer, as thats what PE8 was for.
I did not have the timeline fully rendered before I started, if that makes any difference.
    Anybody have any ideas.
    Thanks in advance.

Sorry I'm a newby. I'll put this is PRE 8 where it belongs.

The built-in SuperDrive can read CDs and DVDs, but not Blu-Rays. You need an external Blu-Ray drive and a specific application to use Blu-Ray discs

  • Blue Ray Disk Equipment and Players

    Hi all,
just a quick question: in general, is it possible to watch blue ray disks (bd) with Archlinux? Which hardware equipment is best to be used and which applications for playing have to be used?
I am interested in the solution, so commercial applications are also valid for me. Has anyone experience with this topic?
    Best regards,
    Martin

    @B
+1 on that, people always complain about privacy issues and yet they happily use _online_ services to store data .... go figure. As you say, even if you have local copies of the files, if the drm server goes down then ... "we're sorry but we can no longer provide this service, thank you for giving us your money but now we're rich and we don't need you anymore", not even mentioning that if you want to watch _the same thing_ on several different devices most probably you will need to buy it all over again (that's completely fair, as far as the ones receiving the money are concerned that is).
Current "anti piracy" laws would be hilarious if it wasn't for people getting sued for ridiculously high amounts of money and the legal constraints anyone faces if wanting to keep legal.
Also the current practise of ISPs is to limit the speed of non http traffic (or even all traffic during peak hours of the day) and according to recent news it is being considered to limit the speed of the http traffic during half the day if they decide you are using it beyond what is considered "fair use" ... there goes "the cloud" down the drain.
And lastly, as always, linux users get screwed as there is no support whatsoever from anyone (concerning the playback of media with DRM) if you want to stay legal or don't want all the hassle (and risks) of going around DRM.

  • Burning Blu-ray disks.  Third party hardware needed?

I have read from earlier posts that it is not possible to burn Blu-ray© disks from DVDSP. Can third party hardware be purchased to burn such a disk having assembled the digital assets in DVDSP? Any recommendations?
    Thanks in advance.
    G5 Quad Desktop   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks for your responses. I see that from DVD SP Late-Breaking news that'HD DVD projects authored by DVD SP 4.0.3 fully comply with the 1.0 version of he HD DVD specification...the new HD DVD standard. The disks will play on Apple DVD Player version 4.6.5 or later.
I haven't commited to the Blu-ray© player, just the Sony HD camcorder.
When the time comes, I will burn to a red laser disc per the Apple recommendation. And thanks for the Roxio link which makes it clear that a PC is needed for Blu-ray©

  • Best workflow from FCE 4.0 timeline to Blu Ray disk?

I'm almost done creating a video in FCE4.0.1 and I'm wondering what everyone's experience is in producing a quality blu Ray disk on the Mac.
I'm using an iMac I7 and FCE 4. I will be buying an external blu Ray writer (suggestions?) and I'm assuming I'll need Toast and the blu Ray plug in to create the disk.
Perhaps not. I know others have already fought this bleeding edge battle so I'm hoping I can learn from your experiences.
I'm looking to output 720P quality. So, suggestions? Ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    DC

I have had satisfactory results burning short Blu-ray quality movies using Toast and standard DVDs. I export my work from FCE to QuickTime then import it into Toast. I select the Blu-ray video option (top left) and also select the standard DVD (bottom right). The results are quite good viewed on a HD TV using a Blu-ray disc player. It takes a long time to burn and patience is required, but I have compared the Blu-ray video to DVDs burned in the normal manner, and the results are pretty amazing. This process does not require an external Blu-ray writer, but it will only work for short videos of 20 minutes or so.

  • IMac internet sharing failing to connect to my Blu-Ray disk player.

I have a Late 2009 iMac 27-inch. I have setup internet sharing through wifi. All of my iPods, iPads, iPhones connect just fine. But when I try to connect my Blu-Ray disk player, it gives me a timeout error. It is a Panasonic DMP-BD87P-K. I have called Panasonic, but they didn't offer to many things.

Internet Sharing is clearly working. The only options you can configure are the type of security and the channel. If changing those doesn't help, then either the device is too far away, or it's incompatible.
