Can't acces AFP shares on PPC's on specific server

We have a naughty problem at the office for accessing shared folders .
We use G5 Xserve + Xraid serving home access to 12 macs.
Our problem started when we updated all machines to 10.5.2 (nor did we have a problem with 10.5.1 or with 10.5.0).
All machines login correctly, fetch their folders with their home accesses located in the Xserve, as allways did, BUT :
·Almost all the machines running Leopard (except two) CANNOT access shared items. They get Error -5002
·The old machines running Tiger (G3 Imac's) acess shared items without problem.
So after many weeks doing multiple tests, we got the following conclusions:
·Problem is not server related.
·Problem si related to Leopard clients , although not in all (machines who can connect to local server are INTELs, the one who can't are PPCs)
·Problem is not related to the machine, but with the account (accounts that can access shared items do it on any machine, and accounts that can't, don't do it on any machine)
·It seems that the trouble is related somewhat with Kerberos authentication, but it's not related to tickets (renewing them is no use)
·If we create new account with new name, it can access shared items
·If we create new account with same name that of the faulty one (renaming the later), it CANNOT access shared items.
· We are able to connect to remote shared folders with a different remote server (dual G4) from every machine
We have got a problem in the office, and no clue of solving it.... Have read all over apple discussions over the internet, and although some people have similar issues, they are not as close as ours....
And none of the solutions proposed have solved the problem.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, cause we are starting to get desperate
Thanks everyone.

Hi Ryan!
You've been given some good and useful answers but I'm going to recommend a couple of alternatives.
If your Macs are relatively few (less than 10) in a Windows world then I'd suggest looking into a better SMB client than the one built into Mac OS X. Dave or ADMitMac from http://www.thursby.com will support the higher security level of the Windows server as well as Windows printing.
If your Macs are a significant portion of your overall Windows server's users (more than 20%) then I would recommend you install ExtremeZ-IP from http://www.grouplogic.com on your server. EZIP uses AFP, which is the Mac's native and best supported file sharing protocol. You should be using the AFP protocol for any significant amount of Mac file sharing.
Both solutions will cost you money, but they are well worth it depending on your need for stability and reliability. You're talking about your network infrastructure in a production environment. Don't be cheap when investing.
And both companies do offer trial versions of their software for you to evaluate.
Good luck! bill

  • User can't access afp shares

About once every other day one of my users losses the ability to log onto afp shares on the server.
In the Server App under Users his "Allow user to log in" tick box has become unticked.  If I tick that and save, everything is fine for a day or so then it becomes unticked on its own again.  As usual with computers in generally becomes unticked at a crucial point when everyone is busy !!
Any help would be appreciated.  I can see nothing unusual in the logs and I have tried reseting his password.

I just went from 10.8.5 to 10.9.2 and have this same problem. I first noticed in DNS 127.0.0.1 was removed during install and not put back. From there I got everyhting working except afp.

  • AFP Shares dissapears randomly

    Hi,
I have the following problem: I have an XServer with Mac OS X 10.6.4 and a Mac Book Pro as client. Sometimes the AFP shares not working. The Calendar server also not working. All other services (mail, internet, vpn etc.) is working fine. After a time the AFP shares and the calendar is working again without doing something.
Sometimes a reboot of the client also helps but not always. The CIFS shares on parallels works fine.
I have found some topics with a similar problem on Airport Extreme but this seems to be a spinning down problem with the harddisk. On the server I can access local everything without a problem.
    Does anybody knows a solution?
    Best greetings
    David

We've also been suffering with disappearing AFP and SMB shares. Some shares will remain up -- possibly the less used ones? Still struggling to figure out the pattern.
Initially, this was just on a Mini running OSXS 10.6.3, but later also appeared on a XServer (2008) using a Drobo RAID over FW 800 (possibly relevant). Haven't been able to shake loose from it yet, although the 10.6.5 update seems to of mostly fixed the Mini at least.
Sometimes restarting AFP will work. Sometimes rebooting will work. But not always. Guess we'll have to keep looking....
    Simon.

  • OS X 10.6.5 Server AFP share - can't change group from 'staff' ???

    Hi,
I'm running a new 10.6.5 XServe within a corporate AD environment. Well, when I say 'running' I mean testing - I could never let this odd beast loose on anyone with the awful state it's in.
Trying to set up the AFP shares, I simply wanted to assign one of our AD groups as the POSIX group for the share, just as I do on our existing Tiger server. 'simply' he says... oh I wish!
Server Admin 'lets' me change the group, then puts it right back to 'staff' again as soon as I hit Save. Same result when trying to change the Owner too, but I'm not needing to change that.
From Terminal, the usual permissions commands have no effect either. Try chgrp MyGroupName MyFolderName.
Tried changing while logged in as either root or admin, no difference.
So, all I want to do is change the group that's assigned to a share's POSIX permissions. Am I expecting too much from SL? Anyone else had this problem, and know the trick to solving it?
Can't believe this is happening - something so basic and important. I've wasted countless hours already with numerous other SL issues. Wish I'd never set eyes on the thing but it's been forced down my throat - we needed a new XServe, which turned up with SL installed of course. I'd gladly do a clean install of plain Leopard over the top, but apparently that's asking for (even more) trouble.
This POSIX nonsense is just the latest obstacle I need to get sorted.
    Thanks for any help,
    Paul.

  • Files copied from AFP share point are unwriteable by client

This is the same issue as: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8044984
Has anyone found a fix yet? Basically, when copying files from an AFP server, Leopard is not having the file inherit the permissions of the parent folder. It is inheriting the permissions of the file within /Volumes.
I am accessing an AFP share point on a server that has files that are 644 (readable by everyone, but only writable by the owner). I am not the owner. When viewing the AFP volume on my client within /Volumes/whatever the permissions appear to be 400 (unwriteable by the owner, no access to anyone else). When I copy the file over to desktop, the permissions remain as 400 when they should obviously be 600.
What does this mean? Even though I am NOW the owner, and it is on MY desktop, I am unable to write to the file unless I chmod it. Very, very annoying and this behavior is unique to Leopard. Tiger does not mangle the permissions.
The server is ubuntu-8.10-server running Netatalk.
The test clients are Leopard 10.5.5 and Tiger 10.4.11
    On the server:
    $ pwd
    /srv/www
    $ ls -l
    -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data 1024 2008-11-23 23:29 test.doc
    On the Leopard client:
    $ pwd
    /Volumes/www
    $ ls -l
    -r-x------@ 1 sauce staff 1024 Nov 23 23:29 test.doc
    $ cp test.doc ~/Desktop
    $ ls -l ~/Desktop/test.doc
    -r-x------@ 1 sauce staff 1024 Dec 7 00:21 /Users/sauce/Desktop/test.doc

I don't believe this is a problem of leopard in general. i can not reproduce this behavior with any of my afp shares. no matter how i connect (as an owner or as a guest) after I copy something to the desktop it gets standard 644 (not 600) permissions.

  • Copy from AFP share to AFP share (via VPN-Connection) - stupid?

    Hi there
We set up an OS X server in a remote facility and are connecting to it over a VPN connection (Netgear Firewall).
Everything works fine, there's only one annoying issue: if I want to copy a file from a mounted AFP share (share1) to another mounted AFP share (share2) - both of them residing on the same server - it seems to me that the files are being copied first to my local client and then back to the server again - instead of being copied directly from and to the server...
Is there anything I can do about this issue or am I wrong? Is this a so called "feature" of the Finder itself?
Thanks for any suggestions and regards
    Roman

Thanks for your thoughts about higher vs. lower latency networking - I totally agree. It might be a quite uncommon setup; as the server is being "housed" in a datacenter with quite tough restrictions: not only do they charge us for the power consumption, but also for the traffic being generated - which is 250 GB a month. They're providing an uplink with 10mbps (guaranteed), burstable to 100mbits.
Anyway, we're interested in keeping traffic low - hard to do if we cannot let end users do "common" tasks like moving files from one folder to another (of course, its a sharepoint - but they don't care).
What I'm looking for? Well, I think it will take hours to find out which part of the setup (AFP implementation of the server, AFP on the local machines, either of them on a particular version, the Finder in general...) actually might be responsible for this behavior. And maybe there's a "solution" (if you agree that this is actually a problem" buried somewhere

  • User Passwords Rejected on AFP share mounts?

User Passwords Rejected on AFP share mounts?
(OK, my last post got buried, and perhaps too long), try again. Very brief
    Issue:
After so many days, a User's AFP share password is rejected? What gives.
If you reset it, several days later, same thing, rejected.
Is Netinfo Database corrupted, what can / should be done?
    - Stand Alone server (with AFP and FTP services running, all other services off, not running.
Summary Info for user having issue:
    Location: 192.168.0.50/NetInfo/DefualtLocalNode
    Home: No Home Directory
    Primary Group: Users (20)
    Password: Shadow Password
I have deleted that troublesome user name and created a new name (for that user), just in case, in the re-creation of the same user name (after deletion) some corruption gets inherited.

    Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Using Tiger Server, I have found that enabling ACLs, or Access Control Lists on the volume, and then specifying users and/or groups into the specific ACLs for the share point has been very helpful. Also note that 10.4.10 server seems to work better than 10.4.11, so if you haven't upgraded, don't go beyond 10.4.10. .11 seems to have some permissions issues and other problems.
I assume you are connecting to the server via AFS (i.e. Go > Connect to Server > ip address) and not SMB? SMB sometimes is more problematic about ownership. But either way, Mac or PC clients, it seems ACLs are the way to go.
Crazy as it seems, on my server, even if the owner is, say, admin, and the group with r/w permissions is, say, Prepress, it helps to specifically add the Prepress group to the ACL for that share. Then be sure to propagate the permissions down (unless you don't want to, for some reason). To do this, click the little gear icon and propagate all the permissions -- owner, group, acl, etc. down. This will take a bit of time depending on how much stuff you have. I also find that a server reboot can be helpful.
[[ All this said, 10.5.1 seems to do some crazy things, and I hope 10.5.2 addresses them. I have one machine (not user ID) that always creates a folder on a share with no permissions for anyone. Only from that Mac; the same login on another works just fine. Go figure]]

  • Importing from camera with iMovie onto computer with home on AFP share ...

I am trying to import a movie from a Sony Handycam into iMovie '08. iMovie can see the camera. The problem is that I cannot choose where to save the movie. I am only offered the choice of one of the two disks in my machine but am not given a chance to choose the actual folder location. Furthermore, the only choices are not write accessible to me.
I am guessing that iMovie doesn't want to import to my home/Movies because it is on an AFP share but why can't I choose the /Users/Shared folder (or any other location)?
Does the user that imports video into iMovie have to be an admin user?
The dialog that opens when I choose to import says "Save To:" but is not a proper (usual) file selection dialog. I only get two choices and they are internal disks not folders.
I know that Apple loves to work from the premise that they know best how I should do what I want to do but in this case I am actually totally prevented from doing what I want to do. I could actually log in as the admin user, import the movie (I'm assuming that would work) and then copy the files to my account. Any other suggestions would be welcome. Is there a way to specify the path for the import dialog?
(I am sitting on a gigabit ethernet network with a recent XServe and XServe RAID serving my home. I find it hard to believe that this couldn't handle a simple video import. It's not even HD.)

I am only offered the choice of one of the two disks in my machine but am not given a chance to choose the actual folder location. Furthermore, the only choices are not write accessible to me.
Other than the start-up drive user's account "Movies" folder, iMovie '08 only allows access to the "root" level of non-start-up drives which are the only areas it scans for "iMovie Events" folders during initialization. In addition, in order to access non-start-up drives, they must be formatted as "Mac Extended OS" drives.
I am guessing that iMovie doesn't want to import to my home/Movies because it is on an AFP share but why can't I choose the /Users/Shared folder (or any other location)?
    See above.

    No.

Finder level file operations performed external to iMovie '08 tend to corrupt pointers/reference paths unless they emulate what iMovie itself does in which case the initialization scan may be able to fix some problems.

Not familiar with such use so I don't know if this would automatically limit your access to root level storage area.

  • What do I need to do to enable Active Directory users to authenticate to AFP shares in 10.8 server?

We recently upgraded from 10.6 server to 10.8 server and are having trouble with AFP shares and Active Directory.  We have shares on each of our OS X servers that should be mountable by any Active Directory user at the site the server resides.  In 10.6, this worked beautifully.  Simply adding the appropriate AD groups with appropriate permissions to the ACL of the folder(s) being shared worked without a hitch.  In 10.8 server, this is not working.  Permissions are defined correctly (as far as I can tell), the server is bound to AD, but yet no AD user who should have access can mount the share.  When attempting to mount the share on a 10.6 client, the user gets the short and simple "You entered an invalid username or password.  Please try again."  On a 10.7 client, the window shakes.
What confuses me even more is that no local users can mount the share as well.  I try as our admin account, I receive the following error message on our 10.6 clients:
Actually, as I was forumulating this post, logging in as the server administrator account is now working...???!!!
This was the error message we were receiving on 10.7 clients before it magically started working:
In any case, authenticating as an AD user is still no go.  Any ideas?

I had something similar to this. In the name field put in DOMAIN\username rather than just the name.

  • Spotlight/Searching does not work for afp shares in Lion

    Hi
I cannot search for files in Finder on my afp shares. The server and client are both running Lion 10.7. Anything I am missing? Should this work or not? I'm so used to Spotlight I would really hate it if this isn't supported for afp shares.

  • Mac, Indesign CS5 crashes when saving to an AFP share.

    Hey all,
I know that it isn't best practices to save to a share, but my users do it. We have never had that problem with CS3 or CS4.. as a matter of fact, not even all of my users have this problem.
I have one designer that crashes whenever saving to an AFP share on OS 10.5 server. It just kills InDesign. Spinning beach ball of death shows up and then claims that the network resource can't be found.. then poof.. bye bye indesign. I told her to copy the files locally, work on them, save them, then copy back to the server. But after 5 years of working off the share drive she still forgets. We are running production and she is begging me for an answer.
    Thanks.

I will double check her version when I get to work tomorrow. My Mac users are really good about staying up on patches.
I will let you know if I need further assistance.. thanks!

  • Folders Not Showing in Server Admin AFP Share Point?

    Hello all,
My problem is I can make a folder in Server Admin under AFP Share Point, But the Folder wont actually be made on the HD.
Under Server Admin AFP Share Point it will tell me that it doesn't exist?
So I thought I'll go to that point on the HD and make the folder then set the permissions to it... nope I can make the folder I can see it in finder and in terminal, But not in Server Admin AFP Share Point.
I have never seen this before any help is greatly welcomed.

    Hi Kristoffer,
I have seen an attribute for folder object which could control SharePoint folder hide or show in webdav explorer view, you can use PowerShell to output the problematic folder property, see if it the case, then use the PowerShell code to set it's property
with blank value to make it show in explorer view,
Use the PowerShell to get the folder object and then check the property value with this code line $folder.Properties["vti_winfileattribs"]
#folder can be site, library level and folder level
    $folder = (Get-SPWeb http://sp).Folders["shared documents"].SubFolders["folder1"]
    #hide folder
    $folder.Properties["vti_winfileattribs"]="00000016"
    #show folder
    ####$folder.Properties["vti_winfileattribs"]=""
    $folder.Update()

Have loaded lion and now can't access office for mac or apple works as it says it does not support power pc applications, how can I acces them or better still reinstate them please?

MS-Office for Mac versions 2004 and older do not run in Lion since these are PPC-apps for which Apple has dropped support.
