Can't access a Windows PC from my Mac

Hi ,
I'm having real problems connecting to my PC from my Mac.
I'm using a wireless router, both the pc and my macbook are connected wirelessly to the the router. From the PC I can ping the pc, the router, external web addresses, and the mac. From the mac I can ping the mac, the router, external web addresses but not the pc.
What's really strange is that I can connect to the mac from the pc, transfer files from the pc to the mac, and transfer files from the mac to the pc. However I still can't connect or ping the pc.
I've tried enabling sharing on the pc, I've got the same "workgroup" for the pc and the mac.
I've now run out of ideas, does anyone else have any that might help ?
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.7)
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hi iFelix,
Does the PC have an account with a username and a
password.
yes the pc does have an account with username and password, and for consistency I made them the same as the mac username and password.
I'm still not sure why I can't even ping the pc though ?
I followed your tutorial through, that's when I managed to get the pc to access the mac and transfer files, unfortunately I stll can't see the pc though (Very good tutorial too).
Thanks

Do you mean seize control remotely? There are a variety of apps that will let you do that - I use Splashtop, which recently rolled out a way to access and control the PC over the Internet. If you just mean copy docs over to your iPad, then also yes - through cloud storage (such as DropBox) or productivity apps such as Goodreader or the many office suite apps.

  • I can't access messages or facetime from my mac

I've been using messages and facetime on my macbook air for almost a year now. I am currently running OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.4. Recently I've had trouble getting onto facetime and messages from my mac. I have no problems getting on either from my iPad, but I can't seem to get on from my mac. When I try to login to messages or facetime, I get this message; "The registering device does not have appropriate credentials". I can still get on the app store from my mac, and everything else is working fine, I just can't get into messages or facetime. Does anybody know a way to fix this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Yes indeed, after a few recent Windows® security patches, connecting from a Mac was slow to impossible, even when it did work, it could take more than 45 minutes for a PC to show up on the Network.
After installing Bonjour for Windows® and learning to right click on the connection in Windows to access Bonjour, the connection was almost instant.

  • Can I access Ext Windows HD from my PB

    Hi
My past neighbors are moving and gave me their 2 old PC towers to look after and repair if I can.
None of them start, but they would like to recover some files on them.
One shows a XP Pro loading screen at some point, and I remember the other is a 98 (DK which version). Apparently one of them is infected by a virus that stopped it working.
I have put one HD in an enclosure. It shows in DU.
    Volume format is MSDOS (FAT)
and I can eject. That's about it.
I tried to verify but says Unrecognised Filesystem.
Is there an equivalent of MacDrive?
    Thanks

there is no need for an equivalent of Mac Drive with FAT formatted drives. OS X can read and write to FAT formatted drives without any software. if it doesn't work for you the file system on that drive is likely damaged or the drive is defective. if it's a file system problem it should be fixed from windows. you can try mac data recovery software like Filesalvage or Data rescue II but it costs money and is not guaranteed to work.

  • Can I access my Time Machine from another mac?

My current mac (an iBook G4, early 2005) has I think died irreparably. I'm waiting to see if it can be repaired but in the meantime I'd like to know if I can plug my Time Machine into another Mac (either a friend's or a family member's, both have 2006 MacBooks) and be able to access my stuff? I read elsewhere in the forum that this was possible if you were setting up a new mac, but I won't be able to buy a new computer for a while and need quite badly to be able to get at my documents.

yes, it's possible. plug it into the other computer. control-click on TM inthe dock and choose" browse other Time Machine disks".

  • I can access my time capsule from my mac mini at work but my macbook can only access it from my home network. how do i fix this?

I have a Mac Mini and a MacBook, both were configured at home to access the time capsule. I have since moved the mini to work to use there and it has no issues looking up files on the time capsule which remains at home. The macbook whoever can only access the time capsule from within the home network. I can't seem to find what I may have done differently. Can anybody help?
Not sure if your allowed to post two questions, but it's may be related. I find that accessing the files on the time capsule from the mac mini or the macbook is very slow. Accessing the same files from an older HP laptop is as fast as accessing its own hard drive. How can I speed up the accessing of these files from my apple products. One would think they would work fast and the 'windows' computers would take minutes to map the drive each time...
    Thanks for any help.

I have since moved the mini to work to use there and it has no issues looking up files on the time capsule which remains at home.
This cannot happen by magic though.. you must have configured the mini to access the TC remotely.. which method are you using, BTMM and iCloud??
The macbook whoever can only access the time capsule from within the home network. I can't seem to find what I may have done differently. Can anybody help?
How is the Macbook configured to access the TC remotely?? If you are trying to use BTMM and iCloud, then it might be a case that with the mini running the connection cannot be done by more than one computer at a time.. this is generally the case although I do not know if that is specifically true of BTMM method. Try turning off the mini and leave it off.. (off not standby)... then reboot the TC when you are at home.. and then try and connect the laptop to the TC the next morning from work. See if it is then able to capture the connection.. if so start up the mini and I suspect it now will not be able to connect.. that will prove that the TC cannot cope with two remote connections.
There also could be another factor in here. If you are accessing the laptop via the same router as the mini is on.. then actually you cannot have two users mount the same files on a TC.. from the same IP address.. as far as the TC is concerned both devices have identical IP, that is the public IP of the work location router.
If you happen to not be using BTMM then the situation is even easier.. you cannot make two different devices connect to the same network resource using the same port. That is the failing of the NAT system.. one device uses the port then it cannot be used by a second device. You will need to do some fancy footwork and use a different port.
Anyhow tell us exactly how you are doing remote access.. otherwise I am just guessing.
Not sure if your allowed to post two questions, but it's may be related. I find that accessing the files on the time capsule from the mac mini or the macbook is very slow.
Are you talking about files you are hosting on the TC?? Not Time Machine backups??
Can you tell me exactly how you are accessing the TC.. please do a test..
Copy a file to the TC and from the TC using the Laptop.. Use a single very large file, eg 1GB movie file.
Give me a read and write speed.. you can use activity monitor to give me an aprox average speed as well as peak.
Do the same test from the same computer with wireless turned off running ethernet.
Then do the tests from the mini.. same ones.. copy large file to and from the TC by ethernet and by wireless.. when using ethernet make sure wireless is off.
I strongly recommend you set IPv6 to link local only for your wireless and ethernet setup in the Mac.
    eg
Now do the test from the HP laptop and give me the results from that.
Is the issue wireless only.. ??
Then you might need to spend a bit of time fixing the wireless in the Macs.. you can run wireless diagnostics in Mavericks.

  • Can't access iPhoto 09 library from outside iPhoto

Since upgrading to iLife 09 I can't access my iPhoto library from anywhere BUT iPhoto. I use Photoshop CS2 and open my photos directly from that application. But now when the directory actually appears, it is greyed-out and inaccessible.

    Yes you can do this
In Finder you can right click the iPhoto library and choose 'show package contents'.
    but you shouldn't.
With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
All of these are a: faster and b: safer than rooting around in the folders of the Library package
    Regards
