Can't Access any USB drive

I just installed Windows 10, and untill now all is working fine except for the fact that I can't access any USB Drive or PEN.
When I try I always get the following message:
this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer
How can I fix this BUG.

Hi,
I don’t think it’s a bug, it could be driver or settings issues.
Please run rsop.msc to see if there is any related Group policy was configured to block USB device.
First I would like to confirm with you that expect USB drive, if other USB device can be recognized fine.
If not, I recommend you to update or reinstall the USB controller under Device manager.
If this issue only happened on USB drive, let’s try following suggestions:
Suggestion 1: Check hidden device drivers
Unplug your USB storage device.
Type CMD in Start Search.
Right click cmd.exe and select
Run as administrator. Click Yes if the User Access Control box pops up.
At the Command Prompt window, type
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 and press the Enter key.
Using the same Command Prompt window, type
devmgmt.msc to bring out the Device Manager.
At the Device Manager top menu, click
View and select Show hidden devices.
Browse down to the Universal Serial Bus controllers and click the
+ to expand the list.
Probably you will see some light grey devices, e.g. USB Mass Storage Device or USB Composite Device. Right click each and every light grey devices and select Uninstall. This will remove whatever "hardware profile" linked
to your USB storage.
Attached your USB storage device and see if it works.
Suggestion 2: Check if the drive can be recognized under Disk management:
Right click the Start icon and choose Disk management.
If you can find your USB drive there but there’s no in File explorer, follow these steps.
Run cmd as admin, type following commands   to enable automount feature:
Diskpart
automount   enable
Details   for this command:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753703.aspx
Then try   to assign letter for your USB drive again by using commands below:
Run cmd as   admin, type following commands:
Diskpart
list   volume
sel   volume x [x present the volume number of your USB drive]
assign   letter=g:
Another thing is if you use USB3.0 to connect the drive, change it to USB 2.0 to see what's going on.

  • Can't access a USB Drive connected to Time Capsule from a Windows PC.  Apple Care can't/won't assist.  HELP!!!

Trying to get my Windows 7 PC to access the USB Drive that is connected to my Time Capsule.  I have a Fat32 Formatted USB drive connected to a 2TB Time Capsule and I'm trying to get access to that drive from a Windows 7 PC.  I've attempted to map the network drive (based on some 3-4 year old articles I could find online) but any time I access a file from the PC, the Time Capsule "freaks out" and disconnects all connections to it which forces me to unplug it to restart the Tim Capsule.  I'm at a loss now as to what to do.
Spent a few hours talking to Apple about this and much more.  Apple Care can't or won't help with this particular problem (the guy I talked to, as nice and helpful as he wanted to be, had no experience supporting their hardware in a Windows environment).
Someone has to know how to fix this so, PLEASE, help if you can!

First off, Archon23, what you want to achieve is possible.  I have access to both my Time Capsule (TC) and the USB drive connected to it, from a Win. 7 and Win. XP machine.
Here is what I see from the Windows side of things:
From My Computer - TC USB Drive (Y)
From Windows HomeNet - Time Capsule:
Now getting there is the trick.
One caveat before proceeding:  I am not well versed in Windows Networks, Windows Sharing and Firewall settings so some of the following may not be elegant, may not be absolutely required, and may not be the best way of getting there.  But it is what I did to see both the TC drive and it's attached USB  drive on the Windows side of my network..
1.) First, I added Airport Utility to the Inbound rules of Win 7 Firewall
While poking around my Network Sharing and Firewall settings trying to figure this out, I got a Pop-up recommending I do that.  AND I did that. Oh, and while you are at it, make sure you have a Home network established.
2.) Next, on a hunch, I installed a USB Wi-Fi Adapter (under $20) to my Win PC, enabled that Wi-Fi connection and disabled my Ethernet connection.  I was getting no where on this matter with my Ethernet connection to a DSL Gateway.  But with a Wi-Fi connection to my AirPort Express Base Station, I made progress.
3.) Finally, while poking around my Network Sharing Center some more, one by one I started the various network device Setup Wizards in there, and Trouble Shooters, to find the elusive TC/USB devices in question...AND voila, it worked.   And it's stable, been this way for going on two weeks now.
    Good luck.

  • Can I connect any USB drive to download photo, songs to ipad2

Can I connect any pen drive to ipad2 to download songs, photo?

I'm not sure what you mean by "download". If you want to put content onto the iPad, then you can import photos though the Camera Connection Kit, as long as you correctly set up the USB flash drive. Search the web for "ipad import photos from usb drive" and you'll find instructions. You cannot load songs or other content onto an iPad from an external drive.
If you mean that you want to save photos or other content from the iPad onto a USB drive, there's no way to do that I'm aware of.
    Regards.

  • Can't access external USB Drive

I have a Seagate external USB drive that I'm trying to access. This drive has not been used in awhile, but as far as I know it ok.
When I plug it into my G4, and power it up, it never comes up on the desktop. Instead, I get a message saying "the disk you have inserted is not readable by this computer", and gives me the choice of "initialize", "ignore", or "eject".
This drive has worked in the near past. Why do I now not seem to be able to access the data on it?
I tried a "restart" with the external drive hooked up, but get the same message. I really don't think the drive is bad.
Is there any way I can force the computer to recognize an external drive?
Note: System Profiler sees the drive, but it just never mounts.

Hi Japamac, good to speak with you again. You have helped me in the past.
Sorry for the repeated posts in multiple forums. I've been desperately trying to figure this out, and was looking for maximum views of my problem.
A couple of days ago, I was able to get this drive to mount making me believe that is (was?) formatted for Mac. Nothing that I know of has changed since then except that now the drive will not mount.
Disk Utility sees the drive, but verify disk and all other choices are greyed out. Clicking on "mount disk" also has no affect.
Under disk utility, I clicked on the "info" tab for the external drive, and under "Partition type" it says "WindowsFat32" but I don't know what might account for that if the drive is Mac formatted.
My primary concern is if the data on this disk is still ok. If it can still be accessed on a PC, I can get together with a PC owner this weekend.

  • Can I access my USB drive connected to 3rd Gen Extreme via the internet?

After reading the features of current Airport Extremes, it seems that one can acces their USB connected hard drive via the internet. Is this true and does that feature also exist on 3rd Gen extremes as well? If so, how do I access it via the internet?

Yes and yes. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip.

  • I have all of my data from my old macbook pro in an external hard drive. Basically it's my old Macbook hard drive with external casing. It was working fine before when retrieving files using my new macbook air, now I can't access any files?

I can't access any of my files, photos, anything form my external hard drive... It worked before now when I plug it in the light comes on, but it doesn't even show up as an external drive, so I can't access anything, I'm worried I have lost everything...

Huge mistake was only having ONE copy of your data OFF computer,
most people do it, and its just horrible and the typical reason for serious data loss.
Likely you have a very common failure (extremely common actually) called SATA bridge card failure, which would be "good" news,
    read about same here:
Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD
Never again let yourself have LESS than 2 copies of your important data off-computer,      ever
    1. verify the external HD doesnt show up on another Mac
if same, you have about a 8 in 10 chance its SATA card failure.......... easy to fix.
The great news at the end of the tunnel of an apparently failed or failing external hard drive.
When checked on another computer, and with no need for spending money on data extraction expertise or software, the very likely case is that your external USB or thunderbolt HD is in fact fine, and merely the card interface, or SATA bridge card has failed or is failing.  Keeping a HD dock around handy, or cheaper still a $20 hard drive enclosure or a SATA to USB connector can be a real life saver in getting your drive back to use, when the drive itself is fine, and merely its interface card has gone bad.
The SATA bridge card inside a USB external HD has a very high failure rate in general
Typical SATA bridge cards as seen inside a 3.5" external HD with power input (#1), and 2.5" SATA cards (#3, #4, #5)
What are the realistic odds your HD is perfectly fine?
There are no hard facts whatsoever, especially since so many people discard their assumed “dead/faulty” hard drives, but a good educated conclusion from years of examining and seeing this issue is that for hard drives made since 2010, and not dropped or generally abused, is that a minimum of 50% conservatively are perfectly fine! I personally estimate however that it likely approaches 60%+.
Considering how many external hard drives ‘fail’ (rather the SATA bridge more than half the time) each day, that is a very high number of perfectly fine HD that are tossed!
This is especially common with 3.5” desktop HD that are connected 24/7 with power and see a lot of data transfer. People wrongly conclude that “X” mfg. just made a defective drive, when in fact their 3.5” drives inside the plastic enclosure is 100% fine.  I have personally seen well over 200 of these dead SATA cards and additionally seen 3 fail within a one hour span of doing a large data copies.
One of the very reason pros use bare HD as inserted into HD docks is not just the saving of space and the need for endless USB cables, but the elimination of the need for this high failure-rate part.
While the shapes and sizes vary somewhat on SATA bridge cards, they all serve the same purpose and have likewise failure rates
What exactly is the SATA bridge card in your external HD?
In the middle to late of 2009, most all external hard drives both in 2.5” and 3.5” reached the shelves in SATA III. These small SATA cards or "bridges" are used to translate between the hard drives’ interfaces and the enclosures' external ports (USB, Thunderbolt, Firewire). Additionally these small bridges not only transfer power but also of course the data. Unfortunately these SATA bridge cards have a very high failure rate as they are burdened with shuffle power and data.
Literally these little unreliable and fragile cards are the power conduits and the nervous system for all external HD data transfer.
SATA card as found inside a typical USB external hard drive
The assumption that the hard drive is bad when its not!
Countless 1000s of good external hard drives are thrown away each year because the owner thought the HD was bad when it fact it was the SATA bridge card which had failed. This card is removed in a matter of mere second once an external USB HD is cracked open from its plastic casing to reveal the bare HD and the attached SATA card which attaches between the HD and the USB cable.
To complicate this problem, even many computer professionals do not know that there is a very easy solution to the “failing or dead HD” issue since the hard drive itself is very likely just fine.  Its astonishing that so many highly educated computer repair persons are unaware of this high-failure part, but this is mostly due to the fact that they do not juggle 100s of hard drives and know that of the iceberg that is a “external hard drive failure”, the mostly unseen majority are not a HD failure at all, but a bridge card failure.
To add to this great misunderstanding is the fact that people assume that "likewise symptoms seen on an external HD are the same as seen on an internal HD, therefore also the external HD must be bad". This is a compositional fallacy of logic. Since internal HD do not have a SATA bridge interface, to conclude similar symptoms "indicate the same failure" is misplaced and incorrect.
This is all not to say that HD do not fail, they do indeed, and I have seen many 100s of dead and failing hard drives.  Hard drives even under ideal conditions have a life expectancy of around 4-8 years due to ferromagnetic depolarization from entropy.  But of the mountain of symptoms that are seen as “hard drive failures” in comments, posts, and hearsay, half or more of these are not a HD failure at all.
Once your rescued hard drive is removed from the bad SATA card
You have several options, but the purchase of a $20 HD enclosure is one option, another is having a HD dock, however this eliminates the former portability in a 2.5" small HD.
Remember that 3.5” HD require power, which means you need either a HD dock, or a powered SATA card kit as seen at top left in the picture below. 2.5” HD get power from the USB port itself.
Just remember that the serious downside to the low cost external HD enclosures is THEY TOO contain these SATA cards, and what is worse the cheap ones will fail, often, much quicker than the original factory one did! In which case it is recommended you buy a quality HD USB enclosure

  • I can not access the hard drive connected to my airport extreme!  Any thoughts?

I can not access the hard drive connected to my ariport extreme.  When I use the finder to connect a server and type in the IP of the a. extreme, 10.0.1.1 it does not work and I get an error message.
    Any thoughts.
    A

Is the hard drive formatted for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
If yes, you may need to use a powered USB hub since the USB port on the AirPort Extreme is under powered and it is often necessary to use a powered hub....even if the hard drive has its own power supply
If both items check out above.....have you checked Finder Preferences to make sure that "Connected Servers" will be displayed?
Finder Preferences > General > Show These Items on the Desktop > Connected Servers
Then with the Finder menus displayed at the top of the screen click the Go menu
Click Network and the AirPort Extreme icon should be displayed
Double click the icon to mount the drive on the desktop

  • How can i gain access to my data on a Time Capsule after a fresh install of Mavericks? I can't access any backups through Time Machine... They appear purple/transparent, and I can't even select them to view their contents. PLEASE HELP!!!

So, I've got several thousand photos, and a decent amount of videos of my daughter, along with a lot of stuff for work stored on my Time Capsule, and now I can't access any of it. I did a fresh install of Mavericks on my MacBook Pro last week sometime, and haven't been able to figure out how to get my files back. Please Help!!! My daughter is 2 and a half, and every picture/video I have of her is locked on this thing. I was planning on making some photo/video projects fo my wife for Christmas, and now I'm definitely not going to be able to pull it off. Her birthday is at the end of January, though, so if I could have it by then, that would rule!
Basically, the bar on the right of the screen has some gray dates, which I can access (all backups after the Mavericks install), and purple dates that go all the way back to March (when I originally purchased and began using the TC) which deny me access/viewing. It's possible that I created a slightly different user name when I reset my MacBook, which I guess is most likely the cause, but I have no idea what to do now to correct it. Thanks for taking the time!

    Mavericks does really nasty stuff..
Try manually mounting the sparsebundle and extract the files you want.
    Yet another Pondini reference. http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
We have avoided Mavericks you see knowing that it would cause these kinds of issues..
You never ever load a new OS without doing a disk image beforehand.. TM is not reliable enough or trustworthy to be depended on.
If none of the above work..
I would get a USB drive on the computer and install Mountain Lion or whatever OS you had before you unfortunately upgraded to Mavericks.. Then use TM from that decent installation but mount the sparsebundle and choose the backup from a date well before mavericks was installed.
Once you have extracted the files.. or even done a full restore you might be able to extract the files you want.

  • I can't access any of my files or even a new blank project

I'm working with RH 8. I have also installed the critical updates.
I cannot access any of my RH projects. At first I could access the project I'm currently working on. I could not access any of my other projects.
So, I reinstalled the critical updates. However, when I reinstalled I only got the window above. I clicked next.
After i reinstalled I can't access any of my projects, including the one I could access before. I cannot access RH and just create a new project either. Can someone help.
    Thank you.
I also got the message that my current file was more current than the version of RH. It seems that the update didnt' take.

    Hi there
Question here. What is your operating system? Windows Vista or 7 maybe?
I ask because you said your projects were on your C drive. Normally that's excellent and where you want projects to be. But I've found that if I am using Vista and I try to save something to the root ( C:\ ) from some applications, I'm blocked and see issues with the application. So my thought is that if you are attempting to work directly from the root and you are on Vista, that may explain things.
Normally I suggest folks create a folder named Projects right off the root of C:\ and create a folder inside the Projects folder to house any project.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Can't access any profiles

I can't access any profiles. The mouse moves but won't click on anything. Not a mouse issue.

    Hello Tish1949,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help with startup issues. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice for the issue you are experiencing:
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support
Here are a few tips from the article you may want to consider:
    Try Safe Mode
If you're using Mac OS X 10.2 or later, you can start up your computer in Safe Mode, which includes an automatic disk check and repair. If you're using Mac OS X 10.1.5 or earlier, skip to the next section. A Safe Boot, which starts up your computer into Safe Mode, might allow you to start up your computer successfully. To do this, follow these steps:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
After the system has fully started up, restart your computer again normally.
If your Mac successfully restarts, the issue should be resolved. If the issue continues, try using Disk Utility.
    Try Disk Utility
Use these steps to use the Disk Utility app to verify or repair a disk.
If you're using OS X Lion or later, start the computer from Recovery System or Internet Recovery. If you're using an older version of OS X and your computer came with a Mac OS X Install disc, insert the installation disc and restart the computer while holding the C key instead.
When your computer finishes starting up, choose Disk Utility from the Utilities window, or from the Installer menu if you're started from an installation disc.
    Click the First Aid tab.
Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
Select your Startup Disk (usually named "Macintosh HD").
Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Tip: With Mac OS X v10.6 and earlier, always start up your computer from an Install or Restore disc when using Disk Utility to verify or repair your startup volume. Otherwise, you might see some disk error messages.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    BobbyD

  • Accessing the USB drive on HH3 via Android

Hi, i know that some people can access a usb drive connected to the HH3 on ipads etc, but can it also be done from an android, on 2.2 or 4.0 android devices - many thanks in advance.

Sorry for the aggravation...I took an easier route, reset the AEBS and did an ignore on the Dual Nat issue.  I was then able to use the more tradition means of connecting to the USB drive via finder network connection over the internet.
Seems much easier than going the bridge mode ---> port forwarding route.
    Cheers!

Thanks, Eric. I'm not sure what I should be checking using your suggestion--as I said, I'm an utter novice with the iMac. However,  I saw a reference to problems with the Library entries, so I checked mine and the iWork files were missing, something confirmed when I checked the crash log. In desperation, I did another software update, and that seems to have fixed the problem completely. Now wondering if I dare upgrade to Lion!
