Can't access any websites! :(
Hi all, I've been on BT Infinity for a month or so now and have been experiencing the same issue with one of my PCs. It connects to the HomeHub via Ethernet and runs Windows XP SP2. I can RD into it fine and FTP works too, as does HTTP! However, I can't access any websites at all. No other device connected through wireless has this issue. Initially I was using a static IP address because of port forwarding but the HH uses MAC addresses so I reverted back to DHCP. That aside, I've tried alternative DNS servers, flushdns and winsock resets and tools. These work for a few minutes then all of a sudden the websits stop appearing again! I'm very frustrated and would really appreciate some help as the BT Support team can't understand what I am saying!
Many thanks!

Thanks Keith, the disabling of the cache hasn't made any difference. I'm in Regedit as we speak and cannot find the parameters mentioned on the site, all I have is a 'ServiceDll' option in 'Parameters'...
Any idea where I can find the parameters they mention?
Many thanks.
You have to add the DWORD MaxNegativeCacheTtl yourself, and give it a value of about 5.
If you read the article its says that none of the DWORDs normally exist.
Also, did you read this on the forum?

Hello, I have an issue with surfing with Firefox. The browser starts but can't access any website. The same issue is experienced with Google Chrome. On the other hand, Internet Explorer works smoothly. Thanks
Some problems occurs when your Internet security program was set
to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your
updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow
Firefox to connect to the Internet again;
* Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
* Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Safari quits unexpectedly...Can't access any websites
Safari program quits immediately after opening and gives the following error log. Based on previous posts I'm assuming there's something in my library that needs to be deleted, but I can't decipher the code to figure out what it is! Any & all help is appreciated, I can't get any work done w/o my browser and also have a fantasy football team to manage!

Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Example: /Library/QuickTime/DivXDecoder.component/Contents/MacOS/DivX Decoder
From experience with other Safari users crash reports, the DivX decoder has caused many a Safari crash so if I see that, that's where i start.
You're welcome. And awarding points is much appreciated -

Hi,
I'm sorry you're having this issue with gmarks add-on. Maybe following answer from a top contributor will also work for you? (it helped another user whose gmarks didn't work after an update). See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/839481#answer-204324

Internet connected but can't access any websites
Hi everyone,
I have wireless and my computer was working totally fine this morning. I didn't download any updates or anything and when I came home this afternoon it said that my computer was connected to the internet but when I try to open any webpages in Safari is just says that it is trying to load the page but never actually does. MSN messenger will not work either. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this?? I know it is not the internet because our PC on the same network is working fine. Thanks in advance!
P.S. Not completely sure of my OS, still kinda new to Macs.journey778, Welcome to the discussion area!
Your system information states OS 10.0.x. If you are using that version of OS X you do not have an Intel based iMac. I would suggest that you upgrade to OS 10.2 at least.
If you do have an Intel based iMac, you may want to try renewing the DHCP lease. Open System Preferences->Ethernet->Advanced... and click on the "Renew DHCP Lease". -
I looked through the previous questions and deleted any suspicious software (there really wasn't any, just a bing toolbar). I deleted firefox and reloaded it. I bought Norton Antivirus and ran a scan - nothing. Date and time on my computer are correct. Explorer works fine. Help! I prefer firefox but I can't access ANY website. I get this message every time.
I already went through all the instructions on the Firefox support forum and nothing worked. The issue can't be the website certificate because it happens for EVERY SINGLE WEBSITE I attempt to access. Regardless, I did add an exception for Facebook per the instructions. That caused a strange, unformatted page to come up. I have since read that to do an exception is dangerous as it can cause MORE unwanted malware to infect the computer.
I did, however, figure it out on my own so maybe this will help people who are experiencing this problem in the future: After reading the past posts from people who experienced the same thing, I realized that in every case, the solution was to remove some sort of unwanted software (malware). I am very careful to NOT download software and I noticed that another victim of this said the same thing so this one is sneaky. I even bought new antivirus software (Norton), ran a scan and the problem was not found.
I went to Programs "uninstall programs," sorted them by date and removed anything that looked suspicious that was recent. I had something with the word, "rocket" in it. It looked like a game. There was also one other program that I removed (can't remember the name of it now). Removing those didn't solve the problem, so I went back through all the programs on my list and removed anything that said "toolbar" on it, even if it sounded trusted (I had a bing and a google toolbar). That didn't seem to work either so I sorted the programs by date again and I noticed that the "rocket" software was STILL THERE.
I right clicked on it and then clicked on "uninstall" again. It takes an exceptionally LONG time for that program to uninstall AND nothing shows up on the screen. The computer just sort of sits there and does nothing. I walked away and when I came back (about an hour later) the program was gone from the list.
Firefox works now. I'm not getting that message anymore, but here's the deal: I am not 100% sure which program was the problem. It was either that rocket software or one of the toolbars. Regardless, the answer always seems to be some sort of unwanted malware so I would recommend that any victim of this problem try uninstalling suspicious programs as a FIRST step. And that means ANY suspicious programs that are RECENT, regardless of whether they look like games or antivirus or whatever. If it's recent and you don't remember downloading it, uninstall it. -

Can't access several websites after last security update
Hello,
After upgrading both my Macbook Air mid 2011 and iMac 2008 (with SSD) both running Mountain Lion 10.8.4 to the last security fix, I can't access from any of those two computers a variety of websites, for example:
www.opennicproject.org
www.gentoo-el.org
www.adslgr.com
These are only three. Almost half of Google's results are blocked. Using the terminal utility I am able to resolv some of them but not actually 'ping' them. I get no ping replies. I can access all these websites from other computers or devices (iPhone/iPad/Ubuntu desktop/WindowsXP laptop) on the same LAN. This problem exists only in the 2 macs which are up-to-date. I am sure that this problem is related to latest security update I did a couple of days ago, to both computers.
I'd like to know if anyone who have all patches installed up to the latest OSX version (mountain lion 10.8.4) has the same issues and can ping/resolv/access these websites.
Note that although I can't access these websites directly using any direct network connection, I can access them using TOR browser bundle for mac, which means that something is going on at a computer level.
I have checked so far:
- Applicationn Apple's firewall is not creating the problem (disabled/enabled all)
- ipfw/PF is not running with any ruleset
- LittleSnitch blocks just a couple of annoying outgoing connections. Nothing there (I disabled/enabeld it, same thing).
- Other computers access the websites/ping them/etc.
- I can access websites using TOR.
NOTE: It's not just 3 websites, it's something like 1 out of 3 DuckDuckGo links.
Ideas and thoughts are welcomed!
Best Regards,
PAFrom the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the malfunctioning extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. That will revert its settings to the defaults. -
I keep getting 'error lander' when trying to access any website
I isolated and deleted a trojan horse virus, but ever since then, when trying to access any website, the tab shows 'error lander' and goes no further. I partitioned my hard drive years ago and can access Firefox/Mozilla on the second partition, but cannot do so on my primary partition, which is where all my data is stored. Help!
Do a clean (re)install:
* Download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
* Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
* Don't remove personal data when uninstalling.
* It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
See:

You may need to create a new profile.

Laptop is connected to router but can't access any...
Hi Everyone
A BT engineer came yesterday to set up BT Infinity broadband in my laptop and everything worked fine until this morning.
When I switched on my laptop and my router, the icon on the bottom right hand corner of my laptop screen indicates that I'm connected to my router but when I try to open up Internet Explorer to access any website, it says that the page can't be displayed. I've tried switching both my laptop and router on and off to no avail. I'm on Windows 7 and have an HP Pavilion g6 laptop. My router is connected wirelessly to my laptop. I can surf the net with my iPad with no problems at all which suggests that the problem is with my laptop but I have no idea what the problem is and how to fix it! Has anyone come across this problem before? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
RosieIt could be that your computer has IPv6 selected. Try disconnecting it as follows:
Select Start
In the search field type.ncpa.cpl and press enter.
In the new window right click on your wireless network connection and select properties
In “This connection uses the following items” section remove the tick beside Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) then press OK
Left click on Internet Protocol IPv4, click properties . Check the options to obtain IP address and DNS server address automatically.
Once done try and connect to Internet.
Also make sure that your Wireless Network card has up to date drivers. Check on the Laptop or Network card manufatures website rather than using Windows which can be out of date. -
Can't access my website through safari through linksys modem
I've just spent 6 hours with linksys support and all we could make work is Internet Explorer. But I mainly work on a Mac, which doesn't have IE and I'd much rather work with safari.
Here's the problem.
I have a bunch of websites all hosted under the same shared hosting account. At first I could access them while wirelessly connected to linksys router. Then the connection got very slow and eventually, I couldn't access my websites anymore. I could access all other website. In fact, I'm connected wirelessly and I can reach that forum, but I can't access my websites in that hosting account.
EVERYONE ELSE can access my websites though. And I can go anywhere else which has wireless connection and I can access my websites. So they're up.
I can also connect my computer directly to the modem and access my websites. It's only when I'm connected to the linksys wireless router that I can't.
So the idea was the problem is with linksys. I spent 6 hours with linksys support and all we could do is make it work on my PC with I.E. by selecting the following option: Internet options --> connections -->LAN settings --> and check "automatically detect settings.
How do I do that with Safari?? Any suggestions?Hi Rick,
It's not a mac problem. I am able to access my router i.p address with safari.
The problem that I have is with the Mac AND my PC. They both cannot access my WEBSITES that are all located in one hosting account using Safari. For example, I can't access www.bullseye-promotions.com using safari or Firefox.
*What I need to figure out:*
it work on my PC with I.E. by selecting the following option: Internet options --> connections -->LAN settings --> and check "automatically detect settings.
How do I do that with Safari?? Any suggestions?
*A better explanation of the problem:*
HERE IS THE CONFUSING PART... I can access my websites through a linksys wireless router outside my home. The problem occurs only in my home. I bought a new linksys router but the same problem remains.
Even when I hardwired through the linksys, I still can't access my websites that are hosted in that particular shared hosting account, except with I.E.
sometime I gain temporary access but then I loose it again. I think the linksys support guy told me it's about linksys giving the right public I.P address, or something like that. -
Can not access a website but everyone else is doing well and the old computer with the same internet coming in on that side. side is www.miun.se
You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History > Show All History" or "View > Sidebar > History") or via the about:permissions page.
Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions, so be cautious and if you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make a note of those passwords and bookmarks.
You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of the involved files.
It doesn't have any lasting effect, so if you revisit such a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again. -
Can connect to WLAN, but can't access any web site...
I have a Nokia E61 that I have configured to access my wirless home network (Linksys). I use personal WPA security, and my SSID is hidden. I loaded the proper settings into an access point setting and when I go to Web, the phone shows that it connects to my Linksys router, but the web page never loads. I eventually get a time out error. If I connect to the same website using GPRS, it loads without any problem.
Any ideas?Thanks for the reply!
I have looked at my RV082's firewall setup, but don't see anything out of the ordinary. I even disabled the firewall, but it didn't seem to make any difference. What did you have in mind that I should check?
I get the following error on the E61 when I try to access an Internet website: "Web: Connection Time Out". It takes about a minute or two for the E61 to generate that error.
Regarding the RV082's ability to assign devices to the right subnet, I have three other PCs on my network (2x Windows XP, 1x Windows 98SE), and they have always connected the first time and every time with no issue. How would I check which subnet the RV082 is assigning to the phone? On a PC, I usually do an "ipconfig /all" at the command line and see what's assigned. Is there an equivalent command for the E61 that I could enter while I'm connected?
If I remove the RV082 and plug my WAP54G directly into my cable modem, then my E61 can access the Internet. So it's definitely an incompatiblity with the settings in the RV082 and the E61. But before I/we blame the RV082, I have more or less the same problem at my employer's office: I can connect to the office network, but can't access any sites outside the company network. The only difference is the E61's error message: at work I get a "no gateway response" error within a few seconds. It's a company with around 200 employees at that site, and we're certainly not using an RV082 in the office. I have not tried to call Linksys support yet because in fairness to them, they won't know jack s*** about the E61 and how to configure/check the settings.
Is there something about the DNS settings in the E61 that I'm setting incorrectly? I have them set to Automatic in both IPv4 and IPv6 settings, which is how my PCs are setup at home and what my IT guy at work tells me should be OK.
Thanks in advance for any more advice!
BTW, I'm no big fan of Linkys either, but I've had zero problems with my Linksys products. Also, when I have had to contact Linksys for help with a setup, they have always eventually come through and solved the problem. I've tried contacting Nokia and can't even get a live person that can do anything (the E61 isn't supported by Nokia USA, and the UK phone number they gave me was just a recording). If anything, I'm ready to hurl my E61 through the window right now as I've spent way too many hours trying to get this thing to work.

Can't access any bbc pages or iplayer on imac
All of a sudden i can't access any bbc websites or iplayer on my imac (os 10.6.8) although I can on my macbookpro and iphone both using the same BT wireless router. Other than the BBC I can access all other websites.
I've attempted the following to fixit - (all to no avail):
1. cleared browser cache
2. reset router
3. reset both Firefox and Safari to default
4. contacted BT tech help who advised me to contact either apple, the bbc or their own broadband tech experts (for £10 a month even though they were not sure they could help either)
5. added open DNS server numbers ( i currently have the following 195.95.16.109 142.54.177.158 192.168.1.254 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220)
6. tried bbc.com
Any ideas or solutions much appreciated!mitsie wrote:

Can't access 1 website - no solution found
Because of this issue, I have uninstalled & re-installed Firefox from the genuine download site, so I have the latest version. I can access any website (that I have tried) from Firefox, except the following website: http://members.amazingacademy.com. I can access this site from other browsers. I have contacted the website and they have advised me that they are not having any other reports of problems from other members using Firefox. I have added Firefox to my firewall & restarted my computer. I tried to add it to Malwarebytes, but cannot, since I have the free version, so I don't know if this may be the problem. I don't see any way to add safe websites to Microsoft Security Essentials. Please help! I hate Chrome & IE!

I put together a script that uses openssl sha1 <file> to check for duplicate files in a folder hierarchy. It gives the same hash result for all the members of a font family. Does that make sense as I would have thought there would be some differences
