Can't access Finder & menu bar flashes on & off at "boot-up"

After installing a screensaver yesterday from an Apple recommended site, the problem above occurred but also applications are quitting unexpectedly when I access menu items & try to delete items. Also Spotlight won't work - if I type stuff in Spotlight, the app I have open just quit. I can't access finder so can't even get to delete the ??offending screensaver.
Help!!
Cramster

Have you tried uninstalling the screen saver?
After that try repairing permissions.
Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility
Then select your drive from the left and click "Repair Disk Permissions"
If that does not help, call Apple Care 1800767APPLE.
Or take your MacBookPro to an Apple Store.
Good luck!

  • Can't see finder menu bar mountain lion

Since yesterday, every time I reboot or start my iMac everything comes up except my Finder menu bar.
Only way I can start working on my Mac is to relaunch my finder by force quitting.
I am running iMac 24" (Early 2008), Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB RAM
Anyone with similar experience? Thank you in advance.

One possibility is that you are somehow getting into full screen mode for some app that is restarting ever time you reboot. But the finder could be hosed for some other reason. Perhaps some menubar extension you installed?
    I'd try two things.
    1) start up in safe mode (hold down the shift key on hearing the startup chime) See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455.  If all is well then, you should reboot normally after that.
    2) login as a different user ( you do have another user setup I hope. This is always a good idea). Does the problem happen with this other user?
Safe mode should reset caches and will, I hope fix your problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • My Finder menu bar and screen is flashing.  Is this a virus?

The icons (file folders, Hard Drive icon, etc) on my desktop and the Finder menu bar started flashing off and on, last night. I can use Mail, Safari, iPhoto, iTunes, etc. from the Dock, but it is a challenge to click on Airport on the menu bar to get on line. I shut the computer down, removed-then reinstalled the battery and restarted the computer, but the flashing began right away, again. I had exported some photos to desktop which landed atop the Hard Drive icon. I move them as quickly as I can, but the screen flashes and puts them back, so I can't access the Hard Drive. I had viewed a QT movie someone sent me earlier in the evening and also clicked on several photos in MySpace. I wonder if one of those could have done it.

Just starting up with the install disk won't erase anything.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart the computer and at the same time insert disk1 into the slot while holding down the option key.
This should bring up a screen showing two different startup options.
Pick your disk that you inserted.
You will eventually get a screen with a window opened showing the Mac install file. Don't use this.
Up top on the menu bar should be a pull down menu that will give you an option of disk utilities.
Use the repair permissions function and disk repair function. These will not erase anything.
The reason I'm not clear on the position of the menus is that I'm at work on a peecee.
Try this and let us know..

  • Hard Drive icon won't open and menu bar flashes off and on

All of a sudden, in the middle of the day, my eMac went haywire. I can launch apps and docs are one the desktop. But I cannot open the Hard Drive icon. If I double-click on it (or used Command-O from keyboard), the icon won't open. And when I attempt to open it, the Finder Menu Bar begins flashing off and on (vanishing, reappearing, vanishing) across the top of the screen. I haver rebooted, run disk utility to repair permissions, even booted from TechTools to run its diagnostics. But still no access to the Hard Drive icon. I logged out and logged in as a TEST user, and same thing happens even when logged in that way. Literally, this happened in an instant. One minute the eMac was fine, then this started. Anyone else seen this? -- david

If the problem exists in both your regular account and your Test account odds are that it is at the system level. You can try a Safe boot (hold down the shift key at startup) to see if there is a third party startup item or one of the optional Apple functions that is causing the problem. You could also boot from the installer disk and use the Disk Utility->Repair Disk function. If you have a utility such as Tiger Cache Cleaner which will do a deep cache clean you can also try that.

  • Macbook pro.minimize button is inactive. Finder menu bar and dock won't appear when firefox is open. not occuring with safari. have to click on desktop to get Finder menu bar and dock to reappear. think happens after update of something. How do I fix it?

When i open firefox it opens up full screen (as it always has) but now the minimize button is grey (not yellow) and inactive so i can only open (green button) or close (red button) my firefox window. I can still make it smaller by dragging the bottom right corner but i can't minimize it to my dock or anything. Also, I have my dock set to auto show/hide when i roll my pointer over it. Now, whenever Firefox is open (no matter what size the window is) the Finder menu bar (with the time, battery power, etc) does not show up (which it always has before) and my dock won't auto appear when i roll my pointer over it.

Can you check this issue on Firefox 9?

  • Wheres my Finder Menu bar gone??

This is a really odd one...
When my partner switches user to her account the a pop appears stating "Finder failed to open; restart"
Then when she tries to open something in Applications the computer freezes, the finder menu bar on the top of the screen vanishes and nothing can be opened from the dock. Tried the variety of CTR + all sorts and nothing happens!
Sometimes open applications (such as Word or Safari) have some limited function, sometimes not.
As the finders gone I can't switch users. On the few occations when I have been able to my user accounts finder menu bar has either been transparent or not there!
All I've been able to do is hold the on/off button down until the computer switches off!
Anyone having this issue? Able to help??
    Cheers
    Gethin

    Hi
What exactly did you try? CTR is not something I'm familiar with unless it's your shorthand for something else?
Have you tried booting in safe mode yet? Hold down the shift key. Be patient as it can take some time. At the log in try and log in with her account. If you can navigate to the /Users/Home/Library/Preferences folder. Find the com.apple.finder.plist. Take this to the trash. Next launch DU and repair permissions. When done quit and Restart the mac. Post back if you're still having problems. If you have a chance at this point back up all important and relevant information.

  • Please Help SL - Everything 'quits unexpectedly' and top menu bar flashing

Please Help. Snow Leopard - Everything 'quits unexpectedly' and top menu bar flashing.
Basically, I have been using snow leopard for about 1-2 weeks now without any problems, apart from the strange trackpad expose glitch, but I can live with that. But a new problem has arisen that I CANNOT live with. Basically I plugged in my MiniDisplay > VGA adaptor and a Wacom internet tablet for the first time. And when it booted up rather than just the usual spinning gear, their was a progress bar as-well. Then it booted into Safe Mode.?
Everything was fine in safe mode apart from spotlight didn't work properly so I rebooted and this time it loaded normally. EXCEPT about 5 minutes after I logged on the top menu bar started to flash on and off about ever 1-2 seconds and virtually every single application would quit unexpectedly before even loading. I haven't really looked into it apart from a quick search on google which doesn't seem to bring up anything similar, but atm I am having to use my bootcamp partition with windows installed (shock horror :D) just so I can browse the internet.
    Additional details -
I have tried resetting PRAM + NVRAM with no joy
While logging on (before it crashes), menu items (e.g. Airport, Battery Indicator, Facebook Notifier) all load up on the far right BEFORE the clock, which never happened before the problem, don't know if this will help isolate the problem, but its worth mentioning..
Don't really want to go down the fresh install route if possible, as I did this with leopard about 2 months before Snow Leopard was released

I noticed it some weeks after installing Snow Leopard, and didn't think much about it since I have a Wacom mouse, and the Wacom driver often has some little peculiarities at startup with the Mac OS--sometimes everything is perfectly ordinary, there will be an OS update and a little oddness shows up, the driver eventually gets updated and the oddness disappears until some other OS update, and so on. I just figured that was what it was until my brother asked about the missing the menu bar after startup, which reappears with a click. He doesn't use a Wacom mouse, but he does have some other 3rd party mouse. I don't know whether 3rd party mouse drivers are at fault or not. But it is not a problem with the SystemUIServer.....the entire menu bar is missing, not just a goof-up on the Spotlight end, where SystemUIServer is in charge of things. Since simply clicking the mouse brings the menu bar up I've never even bothered to check the logs to see if anything is noted there.

  • How do you auto hide the finder menu bar

Prior to Mavericks, I could auto hide the finder menu bar by inserting:
    <key>LSUIPresentationMode</key>
    <integer>4</integer>
in the finder info.plist after accessing core services/finderapp/contents/resources, but now in the Mavericks OSX, I receive the following error message:
"Finder Quit Unexpectantly" and a list of various reasons; codes; etc too long to list here.  Is auto hiding the finder menu bar even doable anymore in this operating system, and if so what is the solution?

How do you reverse that process?  I was trying it with various apps, substituting the app name in the terminal command and it worked great until I got to the "Notes" app.  I think it messed up how notes synced with iCloud.
    Thanks

  • When I have Safari maximized, can I lock the menu bar?

Viewing Safari from my desktop, I do and can view/use the menu bar. But, what about when I have Safari maximized? It is always in hiding. Is there a way to lock it? I would like to know time and battery status at a glance....

    hayalbusa --
When you put your screen in "Full Screen Mode," you cannot see the menubar or the dock.  To have access to those two things, you can only drag the viewing screen out to its limits.
To get the pane to its fullest size, drag the left corner all the way to the left of the screen.  Then, Drag the screen out by the selecting the lower right corner and dragging outward to the right.

  • Menu Bar Flashes On and Off

The right side of my menu bar flashes on and off every few seconds. It's there for a second or two then disappears for a second or two. Is there a way I can get this to stop?
It did this when I first got my MBP a few weeks ago and simply opening an app fixed it, now it just keeps flashing on and off.
    Thanks

this means that SystemUIServer keeps crashing. delete the file
/users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist and run the following terminal command
    killall SystemUIServer

  • Using OSX 10.9.4.  Why does the Finder Menu bar disappear when using Chrome?

I've used Chrome for a couple years, and all of a sudden the Dock and the Finder Menu bar are not accessible when using Chrome.  They are present in every other app, as usual.  Please help me to get the Finder Menu and Dock active when using Chrome.  Thank you.

Chrome may somehow be set to run in full-screen mode. I don't use Chrome so can't check its settings options, but try hitting ESC when Chrome is doing this and see if you get the menubar and Dock to reappear.

How can I access files from a flash drive that were previously saved using a Windows computer? When I attempt to open the file on MacBook Pro, it is asking to "convert file to"; none of the options I choose work. I also have Microsoft Office (with Word) installed on the Mac as well.

Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.

  • Display is too big, can't see the menu bar.

I have a 32" tv that i connected it to my mac pro. I see te display, but it is too big. I can't see the menu bar. I've tried changing the resolution, holding control and scrolling, and changing the display size on the tv settings. Any suggestions?

If there are no size settings on the TV that work (some TVs don't have the correct settings) see if there are Overscan or Underscan settings in the Mac's Displays system preference.
