Can't access mask in gradiant tool in lightroom 2

Question

I have recently purchased Lightroom 2 and when using the gradiant tool I can't access the mask option?
Also with the brush tool the erasure option does not always work.
I'm working on a pc.

Hmmm, I was just trying to solve this exact problem - a cathedral bell tower against an overly bright, plain sky.
A partial workaround: in order to darken the sky, I applied a negative exposure gradient to the whole area, including the tower. Then use the Adjustment Brush to re-boost the exposure just in the tower area - using auto-mask. This works to counter-act the original exposure darkening, but of course this "antidote" gets applied uniformly across the masked area, rather than in a gradient. Better than nothing. To approximate a gradient, I guess you could move down the tower creating multiple Adjustment Brushes, each applying slightly less "counter-action".
But I can't figure out a similar workaround if the original gradient had a color tint. How do you "counter-act" a color tint? Setting it to White seems to do nothing.
