Can't access my computer to turn on home sharing

Unfortunately my home computer has locked me out ..I'm struggling to activate home sharing ....is there any plus that anyone can see of me trying to activate home sharing as my host computer isn't accessible ....I would hate to loose all of my music on this computer but I can't see another way of solving this other than a complete scrub of my hard drive ..please help if you can

Hi there, I too have an iMac/2007 thats basically been out of commission for 6 months, though luckily I chose the 3 year AppleCare option, if you don't that then this could be expensive, first time they replaced the Hard Drive, Optical Drive, & Power Supply, on return the PSU would still get upto 180° F & crash, as well as destroy all Drives connected, second time another new Power Supply, much better but still runs too hot when doing alot with it.
IMHO, Apple has cut their designs far to close to the theoretical than the practical/real life situations ever since the G3 Beiges.
I absolutely hate Windows, but right now that'd have to be my next purchase if
i could afford a new purchase at all.
I think you'll have to take it into an Apple Store or AASP, & see what they say.
What went wrong? Am I going to lose everything on the computer now?
Lkely if you can pull the drive or have it pulled, there are many ways to recover or use the data... if the HD isn't dead.

Go to Settings>General>Usage. How much space does it show you have?
If you connect your phone to your computer, what does iTunes say is on your phone? Do you see a large amount of "Other"? If so, you may have a corrupted database. You'll need to sync your phone then restore it as NEW (not from back up) then re-sync your data).

I have found with AppleTV that it is the IPV6 on the computer you want to access is the problem. The issue is that Homegroup on Win 7 or Win 8 requires IPV6 to work, but AppleTV won't work with IPV6. (So maybe double check you have IPV6 turned off)
So you have to make a choice - Homegroup or AppleTV.... but you can't have both, until Apple brings ATV up to date. (crazy that it does not recognise IPV6 - c'mon Apple!)
You can set up sharing individually in Win 7 or 8 and have the ATV access files that way.
Having said that, there is always the exception.. I have an old HP home server running Win8 and it services ATV - but is part of the Homegroup... have no idea why it works on both, but no other machine on the home network will talk to both ATV and Homegroup at the same time!

Happy to help you :) go to seeing and than general or settings than iTunes store it's for sure in settings but you may want to set it up on your computer in which case it's (windows) edit > preferences (Mac) iTunes preferences

I've had the apple tv 2 since the week it came out and haven't had much trouble with it until now. I haven't changed anything with my network settings. I have noticed the apple tv light seems to turn on at random times now when not being used. Now just about every time I try to access my iTunes library I get "To access your itunes on apple tv, turn on home sharing in itunes on your computer using (my account name)". My iTunes library is not listed. If I restart iTunes my computer with iTunes open will now be listed but when I select it it tries to connect them errors out. If I restart the computer then everything works fine. That is until next time I try to connect and I have to do it all over again. I don't want to have to restart my computer every time I use the apple tv. Any idea why this just started happening? Everything has worked until now. Bug in the latest iTunes maybe?

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first.

That is why I said to restore via iTunes, did you check the link?
This will put it back to factory settings and you can set it up with the new ID once you reconnect with your HDTV. This is not done via ethernet, as per the link you need to connect to the computer via micro usb. You cannot bypass home sharing.
FYI: An Apple ID cannot be deleted so the old one would still exist (even if you no longer use the email account it is associated with).

Both atv,s are on the same network, they are wirless and the computer can see them and they are named different.
what ever one i switch on first gets to stream from my computer and the other one asks for home sharing to be switched on, then if i switch both off and start the other one first it gets to stream and the other one which worked asks for home sharing to be turned on. i have hidden all functionality, netflix etc as these are for my 7yr old kids.

Do you have a bootable backup?
What operating system are you running? If OS X 10.6 or lower, boot from your original OS X DVD or a retail OS X DVD and then delete files as needed. Your goal should be to get to 10% of your disk capacity free.
If you have OS X 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion, you don't have many choices in recovery mode (boot holding the command and r keys down).
If you have a FireWire or Thunderbolt connection, you can try target disk mode with another mac.
If none of those work, perhaps your local Apple store can help with a bootable external drive.

As far as I know you don't need to turn off home sharing as such, however you will have lost one of the 5 "authorizations". You can't release these individually unless you are running iTunes on the authorized operating system you want to deauthorize.
You will have to wait until you have 5 authorizations, at which point you can clear them all and start over, reauthorizing the machines you want to.

I can't get my computer to turn on. i had it in sleep mode and forgot and pushed the off button to turn it back on and now it doesn't respond.

Perhaps it is feeling unloved and longs for up to date software!
I don't have one of these - how do you turn it on?
