Can't access my external hard drive on my new iMac

Hello All,
I just purchased a brand new iMac and am unable to access my Iomaga external hard drive. It's plugged in thru a usb port and the only way it pops up is if I unplug it from the outlet and plug it back in. When it shows up in the device list and I click on it to try and access my info, the computer gets hung up for a few minutes and then says the the drive was improperly ejected. The computer is running Mac OSX 10.7.2.  I have a bunch of info on this drive that I need immediate access to. Thanks in advance for any help.
Alex-

It sounds like the hard drive is on its last leg. I would try my best to backup the data on the disk. Then find a replacement for it.

As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:

And, you might be attracting more knowledgeable answers if you were to post this question in the Time Machine Forum (part of the Snow Leopard forums).

  • Why does my I Tunes play only some of my library when it can't access the external hard drive from which I imported some of the music? My esternal hard drive has been corrupted, but I    thought I Tunes would have "saved" songs I dragged to it.

Some of my ITunes library came from CDs, some from an external hard drive with songs  in it.  My external hard drive went bad, which I wouln't have thought would have affected my Itunes library or the songs I had previously imported to it from the external drive.  But now the Itunes cannot locate many of those songs. Is there some process of importing/saving that is different when you import from CD? Hope someone can help.....MN

    Hi MNinPungo,
When adding music to iTunes from another location (for example, an external hard drive), iTunes can either make a local copy of the file in the iTunes Library or create a pointer to the original file in the original location, depending on the preferences you have set. You may find the following article helpful:
    Add to Library
So you can access content quickly, iTunes indexes all music, audio book, and video files that you add to iTunes. This index is called the iTunes library. When you add content to the library, iTunes adds an entry for each audio or movie file to your index. The files could be in your Home folder, somewhere else on your hard drive, on an external hard disk, or on another computer that you're accessing through file sharing.
To add files to your iTunes library, you can use these options:
Drag files from the Finder to the appropriate icon on the left side of the iTunes window.
Choose File > Add to Library (on Windows, choose Add File to Library or Add Folder to Library) and select the song or folder that you want to add.
iTunes adds entries to your iTunes library for the selected files and copies the files to your iTunes Music folder (if you selected that option in the Advanced pane of iTunes preferences).

  • Can't access my External Hard Drive when plugged into my HP netbook

I just bought the HP Pavillion dm1-3214nr. I hooked up my WD external hard drive, the netbook recognized it but there was no option to open the files on it. I'm not great with tech stuff but it seemed that the drivers or whatever for the device are up-to-date. The device didn't appear under My Computer. I tested an older external hard drive and it worked fine, appeared under My Computer, accessed the files, etc. Both EHD were used previously with Macs. Any idea how to access the files on the EHD?

    Hi,
Could you check and let me know the details for both the EHD (model & capacity).
Normally HD that work on MAC,sometimes dont work properly with WINDOWS, coz they use a different file system.
The HD that worked, should be compatible with both MAC and WINDOWS, some HD have a built in firmware that can support both operating systems.

  • How can i view and upload photos from an older version of iPhoto which are on an external hard drive to my new iMac?  i currently have copied the application version 9.4.2. on my lacie backup and want to view and upload this to my new iPhoto version 9.5.1

our old iMac died suddenly, but i had backed up the iPhoto application to a lacie external hard drive.   however, when i try to open it in my new iMac which is installed with version 9.5.1 and is upgraded to maverick, it comes up with “cannot be opened, to open you must upgrade to latest version” and then makes you press the quit button.
the iPhoto version on the external hard drive is iPhoto 9.4.2 which i upgraded on 29/11/12 onto our old iMac (early 2007 version)
my new iMac is running on version OSX 10.9.1
i have looked at buying  iphoto library manager and have emailed them about whether this would work, but any advice would be gratefully received as i cannot be the only person that has had this problem but i cannot find any answers that work.
    thanks
    Julie

YOu can rebuild with Library Manager and this does not require a purchase:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • How can I use my external hard drive with my new (firewire-less) MacBook?

I read in another post that the available firewire adapters don't work for external hard drives. So how can I get my music, etc. off my external hard drive and onto my new computer?

Like the second or third one in this picture?
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f4/USBtypes2.jpg
They are USB ports - the smaller one is a mini-USB (like you might find on a digital camera) and the third is a USB-B port (such as on a printer). You can use a mini or standard USB cable (depending on the port) to connect it to your Macbook.

  • Audio interface and external hard drive config for new imac 21"

Hi. Just got the new imac 21" and I'm considering using it as my main daw with Logic Studio as an upgrade from my old sonar mobo. I usually run up to 40 tracks of recorded audio with fx plugs. I hope to do this at 24 bit 96 instead of 24bit 44 like I did on the old system. I also run the occasional softsynth and sequencer which I don't mind bouncing down to .wav to conserve cpu.
I really like the specs on the m-audio profire 2626 (I need the 8 mic inputs for recording drums) which needs firewire. But at the same time I'm reading a lot of recommendations about using an fw800 external drive for audio. I've read a little about daisy chaining and I'm wondering if anyone's gotten this type of configuration to work. I'm also open to any other configuration options you have to share that would enable my goal of successfully using this mac with logic.
thanks in advance for the help,
    dave

I run three firewire audio interfaces daisy chained together, 2 Presonus FP10's and an Alesis Multimix8.
This gives me 24 simultaneous inputs. I normally record 24 bit at 88.2 . My iMac has a FW800 and a FW400 port. What I tried to do was run all the interfaces through the 400 and record to a FW800 external hard drive but I it kept dropping out interfaces, even if I used only one interface. I switched firewire cables on the hard drive to a 800/400 so that the hard drive was now operating as a 400 and I did not have any more interface drop outs.
Even though the iMac has 2 firewire ports, they connect to a single cable to the i/o inside the Mac. If I try recording to an external hard drive, that is 24 tracks going into the Mac, back out to the hard drive, back in to the Mac and then back out to the interfaces and on to the monitor speakers. That is a lot to ask of a firewire connection.
So, I record to the internal drive and use the external for backing up and saving the projects.

  • I can't access my external hard drive

I just reinstalled the OS.  I'm using Mac OSX 10.5.  Before the reinstallation I was able to access a firewire drive I use.  After the installation, I am not.  The drive is recognized though!  It shows up but when I try to open it, it appears as though it is continuously trying to access the content and basically freezes my computer until I disconnect the drive (which I know I shouldn't do).
    How do I resolve this?

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

  • Can I access an external hard drive that is attached to my wireless network/router?

Ok, so after a couple deployments and time in the military, my collection of movies and tv shows has grown to crazy amounts. Being married, I want to access all these files on the home tv. I have all my movies onto one hard drive. That hard drive is attached to a Belkin N600 router. The router is then attached to the ATT U-Verse. My question, is how do I access the movies on the hard drive? I plan on playing them through the HDMI adapter on my iPad. I have tried File Browser and File Manager. So what are my options now? I feel like its close, but just barely out of my reach to get it all set up.

First off you will only be able to acess the content on the drive when you are at home where the drive is.  To access them you need to add them to iTunes on your computer then access them on the iPad though the Home Sharing service.
I would skip trying to play them though the iPad though.  You will make your life a lot eaiser if you spend the $100 and just buy AppleTV.  It will make this MUCH eaiser.  As well as give you access to your music, photos, etc.
Also as I am writing this I just realized if you have upgraded to iOS7 your iPad will probably not be able to play those movies.  iOS apprenlty will only play video purchased from iTunes.  It will not even play videos recorded by iOS6.

  • I have an external hard drive with my new iMac.  I am trying to load Age of Empires III on the new computer.  I am supposed to drag the icon onto my hard drive icon.  Where is that?

New iMac and not a computer whiz.  I have a new iMac with an external drive.  I am trying to load an old Mac game on it.  The Age of Empires icon tells me to drag it to the hard drive icon.  Where is that?  I have tried finder and launch pad.  No luck.

Choose Computer from the Finder's Go menu and find the internal drive.

  • Can i access a external Hard-drive attached to a time-capsule remotely?

    Hello there,
im sure i have seen this question floating around before but i there are many options to do this.
i have a 2TB Time capsule and i have a 500gb external hardrive attched through the USB port?
i am wanting to know if i can access that Harddrive through the Internet and maybe pick it up from school (Outside my home network)
is this possible and how do i do it?
My Macbook is running: OSX 10.8.3
    Airport Utility: 6.2
    Thanks
    Tom

It is possible to share disks to the Internet. You'll need to manage this with the AirPort Utility (found in /Applications/Utilities.) Launch this and select your Time Capsule, and select Edit. Go to the Disks tab. You should see something like this:
You'll need to make sure that the checkbox next to Share disks over WAN is checked. Click Update.
In order to access the disk you will need to know the public IP address of the AirPort base station. Select your Time Capsule again and look for IP address. Note this somewhere.
When you are away from your network, in the Finder go to the Go menu. Select Connect to Server. Where you see Server Address: enter afp:// followed by the IP address you copied down. Be sure there are no spaces following the //. Click Connect. This should connect you to the disk.
One problem with this scheme is that if your IP address is gotten from your Internet Service Provider by DHCP (most cable modems for homes use this protocol) it may change over time. You can either put up with this, or ask for a static IP address (which costs more) or use a Dynamic DNS set up.
Hope this helps you. Best of luck.

  • I recently lost access to external hard drive connected to my iMac (no icon visible). My iTunes and iPhoto files are accessed from this drive.  I can't seem to get the time machine to restore these two. that drive was NOT excluded from time machine backup

    Hi.
help!  recently I noticed  the external drive icon missing from my desktop...the one with my huge itunes and iphoto libraries. I tried several things but couln't get it back. So I tried to restore to an older date in time machine with no success. I'm sure the drive was not set for exclusion from the backups. Any thoughts as to where i'm going wrong? I was under the impression that external drives were also backed up with time machine...am I delusional?

Frequently doing a SMC reset will help this issue, for directions please click the iMac SMC and PRAM reset link. Also check the obvious such as cables and connections. Or it's even possible the EHD has failed, they can and do.

  • HT1766 Can you use an external hard drive to back up my movies in iTunes but still be able to access them or is there a device so I don't have to use a pc ??

Can you use an external hard drive to back up my movies in iTunes but still be able to access them or is there a device so I don't have to use a pc ??

You can store them on a separate hard drive, you don't need to keep them on your laptop's hard drive. On your computer's iTunes on the Advanced tab in Edit > Preferences there is a 'copy files to iTunes media file when adding to library' tickbox - if you untick that, you should be able to copy the films to a separate drive and add them back to your iTunes library (File > Add To Library) and it should then point to them on that separate drive and not copy them to your hard drive. When you are happy that it is what is happening and that they are safely on your external drive you can delete the films from your laptop's hard drive.
If you plug the external drive into a different USB port next time (assuming that your laptop has more than one) then it might get a different drive letter, so you might need to always use it with the same port.

Can I connect an external hard drive to one of the ethernet port of the airport extreme and access it from my Mac or PC?

If this hard drive is part of a NAS device, then yes it should be accessable from either a Mac or PC while connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) by Ethernet.
