Can't access Public folder as guest

Since installing Leopard computers on the network will not connect to my Public folder as guest.
When trying to access the Public folder under 10.4 the "Guest" option is grayed out, although connecting as a user (entering user/pass) is possible.
When trying under 10.5, once I select the computer name from the Finder's window left menu "Connection Failed" appears on the dark-grey bar at the top. Still, like in Tiger, connecting as a user is possible, but when trying to disconnect by pressing the "Disconnect" button on top nothing happens. I get the same "Connection Failed" message and the user remains logged.
Where I may have messed up: I have 2 accounts in my computer (1 admin, 1 standard). I almost never use the admin account so I deleted it's Public folder from "Shared Folders" under Sharing in System Preferences. Then, on the standard account I deleted by mistake the "Staff" group from it's Public folder permissions. When trying to add "Staff" back, the option is not available.
All of that may have nothing to do with my problem, but I know very little about Unix, so who knows.
Any ideas as to why no one can access my Public folder as guest?

That would be in the case I wanted a Guest Account on my same computer to be able to access my Public folder. My problem is with computers on the network. Thanx anyways

  • I can't access an folder - you have unknown permissions

    After the update to Mountain Lion, i can't access a folder insider my home-folder any more;
First I tried Apple+i ... you have unknown permissions ... nothing to unlock; nothing to change
... then i tried to repair the permissions; without luck.
Then i saw in the terminal (ls -l), that the group was different; although the owner was right.
    I chown -R the folder to alex:staff; (also chmod -R 755)
    now it's:

  • Can't complete public folder migration, 2010 to 2013

So I've been following both these:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj150486(v=exchg.150).aspx
    http://www.msexchange.org/articles-tutorials/exchange-server-2013/migration-deployment/migrating-public-folders-exchange-2013-part2.html
I've locked the 2010 PFs, nobody can access them. I've removed the preventcompletion flag in 2013, resumed the migration all according to the steps.
    Get-PublicFolderMigrationRequest | Get-PublicFolderMigrationRequestStatistics -IncludeReport | Format-List
Shows no further activity any longer after some incremental stuff
    Get-PublicFolderMigrationRequest | Get-PublicFolderMigrationRequestStatistics
Shows StatusDetail: InitialSeeding and PercentComplete: 95% and its not moving.
I've tried proceeding and removing the prevention from servering the hierarchy flag on my mailboxes. But it makes no impact on anything. The hold for migration flag remains true and the migration is not finishing.
    What should I do?

Give it some more time.  I don't know how much Public Folder data you have, but once the initial sync is done, it has to copy over the deltas to the mailboxes.  I have seen this take some time.  As long as it doesn't say failed, I think
you are in good shape :)

  • Can't Access Public Folders Within Outlook, But Can Through Web Access

    Hi all,
I have an Exchange 2010 Server (V14.02.0387.000) with clients using Outlook 2007-2013. Until recently all users could access all public folders without issue. However, since moving the location of the public and private mailboxes on the server (to new drives
with more space and defragging etc), a number of users are unable to access the public folders, getting error "Cannot expand the folder. the attempt to log on to Microsoft Exchange has failed". However, when they log in through Outlook Web Access,
they can view the public folders without issue.
I've tried restarting all the Exchange services, as well as multiple reboots of the server.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Bob

I'm going to start with some general advice.  Don't bother running ESEUTIL anymore to reduce database sizes.  If you find you need to do that, simply create a new database, move all the mailboxes to it, and then delete the old database.
If you created a new public folder database, did you change the mailbox databases to point to it using Set-MailboxDatabase -PublicFolderDatabase?

  • Windows Users Accessing Public Folder

I would like to know the way to allow Windows users to access only the Public folder on my mac.
When I try to access folders from Windows I go to My Network Places and click on the icon representing my Mac then I'm prompted for a password; as I have only my account on the Mac I have to put my user ID and password, thus allowing access to all my folders - not only Public.
I know that Mac users can access Public, but how to allow the Windows camp to do that?
    17' PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.4)

SharePoints is a great tool to allow access to peripheral drives, volumes, and the like. But you shouldn't have to use it to access the Public folder via a PC as you can a Mac. That is a very big question on the boards that has yet to be answered.
Apple says it happens. If so, what's the secret to accessing the Public folder via a PC.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.

  • Start-up script to access public folder on iMac from iBook

I have a public folder on my iMac (running Leopard) that I can access from my iBook (running Tiger) by routing through with Finder each time I start up my iBook. I would like to have a script automatically run at start up on my iBook to connect to the public folder on my iMac. If the iMac is powered on, the connection is to be made; if the iMac is off, obviously the connection is not made, but the iBook does not hang-up, it continues without the public folder connection.

Well this can be done with some caveats. Here is what I did(on Tiger iBook G3( I didn't try on my Panther ibook G4), but it should work on that too. Forgive me. This G3 is a tester so....) and some explanations about it.
I made a unix executable with pico in Terminal. Ran chmod u+x on it. Called it contoamac.
    #!/bin/bash
    open afp://192.168.0.6/
The 0.6 is my other machine(your iMac per se) with Leopard. I put the executable in my iBook(your iBook also as reference) in Sys.Pref., Accounts,LoginItems. Only turned on sharing on Leopard machine. But you either have to catch the Leopard machine awake or set it in energy savings to never sleep. Possibly you could have both machines never go to sleep and that would work unless there is a time out on server uptime. Rebooted ibook and it autoed to login password(to do with no pass is another story involving visudo, etc.) on Connect to server menu. I know I have forgotten something to explain.
I'm going to run this reboot and try and get a quick screen shot of boot/connect process next. Right back. Whew!

  • Can't access library folder on Time Machine Backup

I'll try to explain this as clearly as possible...
    1) I have wiped my hard drive and completed a clean install of Mavericks.  I did this due to persistant problems with disc permissions that I could not eliminate.
    2) I did not want to take a chance on introducing problems with migrating a profile from my Time Machine backup so instead of using Migration Assistant, I used Finder to browse the Time Machine backup I made prior to reformatting my drive to simply copy all my necessary data files back onto the drive in my newly created profile.
    3) I've reinstalled the majority of programs I use and everything is looking good (no disk permission problems when I've checked using Disk Utility).
    4) Mail is working just find with all my accounts having been restored using my Apple ID.
    Here's the problem....
I forgot that some of my mail had been stored on my local hard drive.  I beleive this mail should be in my user/library/mail folder of my time machine backup.  However, I cannot access my User/Library folder in Time Machine.  I've tried opening my current (new) User/Library folder in Finder and then selecting "Browse Other Backup Discs" from the Time Machine icon and, although this opens the Time Machine backups, I cannot do any time travel...in other words, although there are many stacks of folders shown in the backup, I cannot move into the past from the present.
Any suggestions on how I can get this Mail folder out of the Time Machine user/library?  I know there is some stuff there that I'm going to have to get to.
    Thanks!

It woked to get me into my current User/Library of my "new" profile but I cannot move back in time into the actual backups despite the timeline increments on the right side of the screen in Time Machine showing they're are backups for the past several months.  I'm stuck on this moment so to speak.
Got to hit the sack...head is swimming.  Thanks for the suggestions Barney.  Let me know if you think of any others.

  • How can I access a folder on my iMac?

    Hi All,
I have an iMac (late 2010) and a new MB Air (late 2011).  I have a document folder on my iMac that I would like to either a) be able to remotely access and manipulate from my Air, preferably not by just sharing screens or b) sync the folder onto my MB Air.  Within my local home network, it's not an issue, I can use AirDrop, but when I take my Air on the road, it'd be nice to access the folder of frequently edited documents.
    Bonus Points:
I also have a first edition iPad running iAnnotate - is there a way to sync the edited documents from iAnnotate to both my iMac folder and MB Air without having to plug my iPad into iTunes and "Save To-ing" then dragging and dropping over AirDrop?
Basically, I have 3 devices which need to share and sync a folder of documents that I variously edit on any of the 3 devices, but would like to have updated access to from any device.
    Thoughts? and Thanks!

This is only my opinion, but I think the absolutely easiest, fastest, most trouble-free, and least-expensive way to do this is to use Dropbox:
    http://www.dropbox.com
There are apps for Macs, PCs, and iOS devices.
Install the Dropbox on all your devices.
Using your best Mac, put this important "document folder" inside the Dropbox folder that will be created for you in the Finder.
Your Dropbox will automatically copy anything inside it to every other device. Any changes you make on any device will be reflected on all your devices.
The first 2gb of storage are free. You can get more free storage by jumping through some hoops, or you can purchase more through a premium Dropbox account. 2gb is enough for almost everyone.
Because of iOS's sandboxed app environment, not every app can make use of Dropbox (this is not a problem for Macs and PCs - if an app reads and writes files in any "normal" way, it can use the files synced by Dropbox). I'm not familiar with iAnnotate specifically, but many iOS apps have Dropbox sync built in. If this app doesn't, you might want to contact the developer to add Dropbox support.

  • Time Machine Can't Access Home folder

I am using OS X 10.8.3 and my home folder seems to have been deleted without saving (malicious activity by family memeber with somehow gained access to his mother's account that has admin privledges).  I've tried restore via Time Machine (TM) which has worked in the past for minor file recovery issues but, I cannot access the "home" folder on the backup (external) drive any longer; I can "see" the home folder, but it is lightly shaded.  I also am having trouble rebuilding my iTunes library - I can see most, but not all of my tunes - other cannot be found on either the iMac-HD or the TM Backup.  Finally, not all of the iTunes purchased material is accessible via the iCloud download (tunes and app downloads).  So I am pretty much dead in the water.  I hate bringing up  stupid questions but I am not a tech sorrt of guy - I can use a hammer without having to know the physics of inelastic collisions, so my apologies.  Any suggestions?

Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) and select Restore From Time Machine Backup from the OS X Utilities screen. Select the snapshot you want to restore from. All data on the volume will be erased and replaced with data from the snapshot.

  • Exchange 2013 Users cannot access Public folder in Exchange 2007 SP3

    Dears,
i am working in Upgrading Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013 CU7,, I came to know with CU7 we have new way for coexistence with legacy Public Folder
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn690134(v=exchg.150).aspx
i did the steps exactly as it is in the article,  but now users in Exchange 2013 always prompt for username /password when opening outlook and i found they still trying to connect to Exchange 2007 PF Server using HTTPS and failed..
BTW, Outlook anywhere is disabled in EX2007 and as per this article Q/A , it is no more needed
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2014/11/07/on-premises-legacy-public-folder-coexistence-for-exchange-2013-cumulative-update-7-and-beyond.aspx
the issue now, still users getting prompted and cannot connect to PF in EX2007,,
    your help is appreciated
    thanks

I ran into the same situation recently, and found out that you need to make sure InternalClientsRequireSSL is set to false.
To verify: Run Get-OutlookAnywhere | fl Identity, *ssl
If it is true, try setting it to false.

  • Can't access network folder

    Hello,
My friend is sharing a folder on the school's network. However, in the folder name, there is a $ (music$) which kind of hides it. When I type his machine name, I have a little menu with all of his folders I can mount, but this one is not there because it is hidden (because of the $ symbol). It is the same thing for Windows. But, in Windows XP or Vista, what you can do is go in the Run bar and type in the location like "\\machinename\music$" and the folder opens. I tried to do the same ting in OS X but it unfortunately does not work.
Is there a way I can get access to that folder ?
I would really like to get access to this folder as there are so many great songs.
Thanks a lot for your help !

Well, I don't really know what you mean by allowing sharing, but I can get files from many persons that have Windows on the network. Unfortunately, yes I have tried the smb: thing in the Go menu. Thanks though

  • [HELP!] Can't access shared folder from Azure Web Role on same Azure Virtual Network

I have an Azure Virtual Network that has a virtual machine acting like an app server running some legacy applications that is writing some files to a folder that is shared.
This shared folder is accessible from other virtual machines within that virtual network without issue.
The problem I am having is that I have an Azure Web Role that is also attached to the above
Azure Virtual Network that is unable to access the shared folder. I know the web role can see the app server as it is able to ping the IP of the machine.
There is some code that needs access to the shared folder to process some of the files that is stored there, but the code won't run because it can not access these files. I used Remote Desktop to see if I could ping the machine, and I can, but I cannot navigate
to the path in file explorer due to access being denied.
Can anyone offer any advice or tips to point me in the right direction to gain access to this shared folder from my Azure Web Role?

    Hi Robert,
    Thanks for your posting!
Form your descirpiton, I suggest you can refer to Tom Zhang's solution via this
    link:
    1. Enable Remote Desktop. (You have done this step)
        2. RDP to one instance of your service. Open up IIS Manager and set the application pool identity to use the account that we used for RDP.
        3. On on-premise local machine, right click "My Computer' and select "Manage". Add a new account with the same account name and password as we specified for Remote Desktop.
        4. Give the new account necessary permissions to write file to the shared folder. (I think you have done this step too)
        5. Try running the code again and see if it works.
        6. If it still says "access to path <folder path located on local machine> is denied". Please check the permission of the shared folder again.
        7. If it works, then the next step is to configure the application pool identity using Startup Task instead of using Remote Desktop (See the suggestion inhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsazuresecurity/thread/247ba75e-87d9-497c-9ec6-1fd4e2c7ff90).
But I still recommend you enable Remote Desktop for your web role to check if the Startup Task has successfully configured the application pool identity or not.

  • Windows users can't access shared folder - only see Library folder.

I created users folders with the same name as the user's login name. (Note: this is NOT a home folder. I have Home Folders shut off). When the Windows user logs in to access their folder, they don't see their files but instead a folder that says "Library".
When I log in with that user's account on my Mac, I can see the correct contents of their folder, but there is also a folder named "99". I found this "99" folder at the root of the server hard drive but every time I delete it, OS X recreates it again.
    I don't understand what's going on.

    Hi,
Whether you can able to ping the server when the server share is unresponsive?
Check for the events on the server for a clue. Try disabling the AV program for some time and check whether the problem is repeating.

    Rafic
