Can't add a dissolve between clips in FCP 4.5

I do animations and we shoot hundreds of stills with a digital camera to record a "shot" in a scene then import them all to FCP 4.5 with the still image duration set to 2 frames. This gives a sort of 12 frames a second speed to the animations which is ok for our purposes.
Then we export the timeline as a qt mov file and use that like it was a single video clip in another sequence in FCP to build up the final project.
When I try to add a dissolve or any other video transition between two of these clips, it won't work.
If there is a gap between the clips, I can add a dissolve at either end of the clip and this looks like a fade out or fade in, but if the clips are touching then I can't add any transition.
I have also tried nesting the sequence with all of the still images into a new sequence so that the stills are treated as a single clip in the new sequence, but this doesn't solve the problem and I can't add transitions between those clips either.
The computers are G5 Mac Pros running Tiger 10.4.10 and FCP is version 4.5
Can anyone please explain what is wrong or how to fix it?
Thanks a lot for any advice.

One way to do dissolves is to put the clips in different video tracks and overlap them (that is, handles by the duration of the "dissolve" you want to implement.
Then use an opacity ramp to fade on out as you fade the other one up.
I find that doing dissolves this way means that I don't have to set the in and out points with a transition in mind, and it easy to slide the clips around to get the exact effect want.
To do opacity ramps, you need to set the sequence setting "timeline options" set to show keyframe overlays. That will put a black line on the video timeline for each clip on each track. When dragged to the top, it is 100% opaque; at the bottom it is 100% transparent. You use the little "ink pen" to put keyframe handles on the timeline opacity line and you can then gradually increase/decrease the ramp as you see fit, including rounding the corners to make it smoother.
As other noted, it may be easier to just make sure you have the right amount of "handle" (video beyond the in and out points) and do one of the built in dissolves; I find that if I don't like the timing I've chosen, it is more work to fiddle around with the in/out points (for example, by putting the clip in question on another video track and dragging the ends out or in).
Experiment with different methods and use the one which works best for you.

OK, I understand what you mean now! I assumed you were asking about the normal Fade In or Fade Out using the transition from the Transitions panel. But I guess you mean the Fade function specific to a Cutaway. When you double-click on a Cutaway the Inspector opens. Here you can set the Cutaway Fade duration. But as you say, it only provides for both fade in and fade out as one operation - you can't set the fades individually (it's both or nothing).
BUT, try the method outlined by Karsten Schluter above. It will give you the same effect and will enable you to fade either side of the Cutaway (or add other transitions).

  • FCP, won't allow fade in/fade out dissolve between clips?

I'm trying to add this dissolve between two clips. When I drag the dissolve over to the timeline, the dissolve covers one clip but not the other? There is not a frame space between them.
    Thanks in advance.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use FCP. There's a FCP Support Community where everybody uses FCP. You should also post this question there.

  • IMovie 2013: can't add cross dissolve to video

I have tried everything. I want to add a cross dissolve between to clips. The auto add is off. Help!

    GeeD is right,
When you have two clips on the time line, one above the other, iMovie doesn't let you use transitions on the clip sitting above the timeline. This is more like how Final Cut Pro works with multi-tracks of video/audio on the timeline. The workaround is as stated to do split clip at time line and "Insert" the video at that location in the main video clip. Once everything's on 1 timeline, you can insert a transition as needed.

I added some tabs in a JTabbedPane and want to add some spaces between each of them. How can I do this?

There are different questions, aren't they? if you ask how to move a component to the right, and get an answer,
then ask how to move it lower, it may seem to be a different question,
but the concept is the same, and the answer would almost certainly
be the same (with a tweak). Basically you should be smart enough to work
out how to move it lower for yourself.
if you don't understand the how concept of my response in the linked post
relates to this post, then you're in the wrong game.
to make it easier for you to understand
set your own UI, overriding calculateTabHeight(..), setting whatever you want
set your own UI, overriding paintTab(..), setting whatever you want for rects[..].x
having pointed you to the area where you do this stuff, you should have been
smart enough to work it out for yourself.
at some point you will have to take your feet off the desk.

  • Any way to dissolve between clips and keep audio in sync?

I've read through some previous postings but haven't found a good resolution. I'm editing a 2 camera shoot from a wedding where the b-camera is in a balcony and the a-camera is close to the couple. I'm using the audio from the a-camera, but whenever I insert shots from the b-camera (to cover cut aways) and try to use a nice dissolve transition the audio get out of sync and it's a real pain fixing it (regardless of whether I extract audio or not). "Overlap" will work but it freezes the last frame and just does not look good. Are there any soultions, possible through a 3rd party (like Gee Three)? I'll use iMovie 5 if needed. Thanks.

You're in LA, so you're on NTSC.
It should work on short sections, BUT, every minute (..because NTSC's real frame rate is 29.97 frames-per-sec..) you have to disregard a couple of frames of video to keep it in sync with the audio!
Let's see if I can find a table to explain it..
Ah; here's one, but there's a clearer explanation, halfway down this page.
In other words, at the end of each minute, ignore the next minute's frame numbers 00:00 and 00:01, so after 00:59:29 and 01:59:29, etc, jump straight to 02: (i.e; the next minute) 00:02. But not on the tenth minute.
You ignore the code for those two frames, but the frames themselves are not 'dropped' in any way. You just 'gloss over' counting them, and everything should stay in sync.
To show that you're using "drop-frame time code" (i.e; not counting those two frames every minute) the NTSC timecode (the business of counting frames) is properly shown with a semi-colon between the seconds and frames, like this "01:59;12" to show that it is "drop-frame timecode" ..whereas PAL timecode - which doesn't involve ignoring the numbering of those two frames every minute except the tenth minute - is properly shown with colons throughout ..as "03:15:23" for example.
So the problem you're having - which we don't have in Europe <..phew!..> - may be that your audio may slip out of sync by two frames per minute, unless you ignore two frames each minute (except for the tenth minute), and just skip over them.
    Any use?
{..P.S: I didn't mention all this in my original reply, as I thought it might be too confusing and much first-time editing is often out by a few frames here and there anyway, so I reckoned that it probably wouldn't show up. But when you're used to ensuring that lips and speech, or music and movement, ought to be exactly in sync, then this drop-frame business needs to be taken into account..]

  • How can I add text "slides" between photos in a slideshow?

I'm making a presentation to a group. I want to use two or three photos, together, to illustrate a point (and be able to back up and go forward for clarity). But I would like a simple text (white on black background) announcement of what the next topic is, before showing the photos.
I have no idea what such panels/slides would be called, which makes it a little tricky to find them in the missing manual . . . or anywhere else.
Is it possible to do this in iPhoto? Or do I have to create the notices/titles/topics in another program (like Photoshop Elements) first?
Thanks up front. The presentation isn't for over a week yet, so there's time to play.

If you can create your slide in any text editor, Pages, Word, whatever, all you need to to is type Command+P(to start a print job) , then click on the PDF button in the next window and select Save PDF to iPhoto in the menu that appears.
This creates a jpeg version of the document and imports it into iPhoto.  From there you can add it to the slideshow.
With Pages and other apps that let you use a color background you can make very nice title slides. Even Powerpoint.  Make a PP page as a slide and then print that one page as I outlined above.  User the landscape orientation with any application you use.

  • Black dropzones?  Can't add photos, or movie clips?

    Hello,
I am trying to make an iDVD.  I have made many before, but I have never had a problem like this before?  Whenever I try to add a movie, or even a photo to any of the dropzones, all I see is a black dropzone?  No photo, no image.  When I add a movie with "chapters" the chapters open on the "scene" page, with the chapter headings that I specified, but again, the little dropzones are black?  No movies?
Does any body have an Idea?
I noticed a bouncing folder that opened when I first opened the iDVD program that I didn't recognize called "MultimediaImporter.oxyen"?  Since I had no idea what it was, and since it was "not responding" anyway, I "Force Quit" it.  I read that it might have something to do with Perian?  I took a look at this program a long time ago, but I deleted it, and I don't see any remnants of it when I search my "finder" so I don't see why this would still be affecting me?  But if it is, How can I fix it?
I am frustrated. iDVD has always been a stable and easy to use program.  I don't know what is going on now?

  • Making compound clip adds unwanted black between clips

I have a 2 minute psa that was shot in HD on the NX5 and edited on FCPX. I needed to put it together with other PSAs to make a longer show so I selected all the clips on the timeline and made a ‘compound clip’. The compound clip looks like one clip on the timeline and it should be able to be copied to another timeline. When I watched it back though, FCPX had introduced flash frames of black in between all of the cuts on the timeline, throwing all of the titles out of whack as well. Why did this happen?
    1.  Original Storyline
    2.  Original storyline made into a compound clip.
    3.  When I play it back I get flash frames in-between each clip so i checked the compound clip and found that it introduced black between each clip.

I ran into this problem too and found a quick solution that may work for anyone who encounters this bug.
THE PROBLEM: In one of my Projects, when creating a compound clip of the entire Project (so that I could apply Project-wide color and audio correction), gaps were inexplicably added to certain cuts. I don't know why. I first tried to work around this by exporting a Master File, but this also created the same gaps. Ugh.
THE SOLUTION: Duplicate your Project and in the duplicate, select all and create a compound clip. After creating the compound clip, double-click the compound clip in the Event Browser. This will open the compound clip, with all its bits and pieces exposed, in the Timeline. Go to the bottom-left corner of the Timeline and click the little button there to open the Timeline Index. Do a search for "gap". Select all the results in the list and press the delete key.
NOTE: Don't forget to duplicate your original Project (before creating a compound clip with the duplicate) so that you have it as a reference and a backup in case something goes wrong. I have not carefully analyzed this glitch and am not 100% sure this workaround is bulletproof. I also am not sure what is causing the OP's titles to be "thrown out of whack" as I didn't have that particular issue, so this "fix" may not actually fix that part of the problem.

  • How do I delete space between clips in the timeline.

I am adding several hundred photo's to the timeline. When I add them as a group, the the duration of each photo differs. I select a group of photo's, change the duration to 4.00 seconds and the clips change to 4 seconds but then there is a large space between each clip. Is there a way to select a group of clips in the timeline and have them connect to each other? How can I remove the space between clips?
    Thanks for your help.

What you are describing happens when you have the position tool selected.
Hit 'A' to make sure you are using the select tool (also known as the 'Arrow' tool, hence the 'A' shortcut).
Unfortunately, your screenshots do not show which tool is active, but I am pretty convinced that that is your problem. Like Russ said, their look pretty similar to each other. But they work very differently.
Here is a picture showing the arrow tool (in blue):
And here is one with the Position tool (again, in blue):

  • How to add some text between columns in dashboard prompt?

    Hi,
    OBIEE version:10.1.3.4.1
Can we add some words between columns in dashboard prompt?
like, I want to add OR, make sure user not to select different month, if selected the different months it will make the report no data.
Month OR Date Range(this is a calendar)
Does anyone have any idea about this?
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    Anne

    Hi,
If you are using the prompts with presentation variables or referring only the columns separately then you can create individual prompts and place static text between them.
But if you need to have both the prompt columns together then create the prompts and use 'space' as the label names for both.(ie prompts would appear but the name wont appear). And create a static text in the page or in a report and place in the page. Which appears as the name of the prompt with 'OR' between the prompt names.
    This should solve your problem.

  • I can't add transitions between clips, but between generated media?!

I can't add transitions between clips, but between generated media?! Any ideas?

I am assumming you are working with "connected clips" which are either above or below the main storyline "track" (the one you put your first project clip onto when you started the project). You can only add transitions to clips that are on either the primary storyline or on a created storyline.  Select the clips you are working with then choose the Clip menu and the Create Storyline selection. Make sure snap is set to assure your clips are really butted up against each other.  Then apply the transitions.

  • FCP won't add cross dissolve transition to clips

After putting two Quicktime clips into FCP, I attempted to add a cross dissolve transition in between the two clips. When I dragged the cross dissolve transition to the two clips, nothing happened. That transition had been used before, and as far as I can tell, nothing was different this time than all the previous times. For some odd reason, FCP refuses to add the transition to those clips.
Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas on what could have happened? More importantly, is there a way to work around this problem?
    Thanks!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

This is a problem when you do not edit down your raw clips and drop them into the timeline as they have been captured.
    The operative concept is 'handles'.
For transitions to work, you need enough unused footage AFTER the OUT point of first (outgoing) clip and BEFORE the IN point of the second (incoming) clip.
Drop the first clip into the Viewer and set an OUT point 30 frames or so from the end of the clip. Drop the second clip into the Viewer and set the IN point 30 frames or so past the beginning of the clip.
Now try to place your transition.

  • How do I add a transition between every clip in Premiere Elements 11?

    Greetings -
Folks, I'm looking for a feature that even the cheesy old Windows Movie Maker used to have.  I'm trying to figure out how to get Premiere Elements 11 to add a transition between every clip via some shortcut/quick means.  I find it obnoxious and inefficient that I need to manually drag a transition between every clip.  If I import 200 short clips that I took with my point and shoot camera, it'll take me over an hour alone just to put the transitions in place.
Is there any way to select a transition and have Premiere Elements add it between every clip?  I've stumbled on the fact that you can click a transition and make it the "Default" but have not been able to figure out what that does for me.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you.
