Can't add a new address card to Address Book

Hi!
Well, I searched and searched the site all over and haven't found any info about this, so I hope I'm not repeating. When I open my address book app and try to add a new card the options under file for "New Card" and "New group", etc. are dimmed and not available and I cannot add any new addresses.
I tried to add addresses out of the "previous recipient" under "window" in the Mail app but it marked it as added and then didn't add it -- it was not in my address book when I checked.
I also tried to throw my address book preference lists in my user library in the trash, emptied the trash and then restarted and it still would not work. ( I am the only user on this computer)
I recently had a reinstall done of my OS X (i'm running 10.4.3) which was done by the guys at my Apple store and I THOUGHT it was working -- although frankly this was not something I checked -- I just saw that my addresses were there. [I had had them do a reinstall because I was having trouble with my Help files working, but that is a very long, sad story...] The only other thing I have done is to install the most recent security update 2005-009 using the software update, but again I'm not sure that this problem was not present before that since I had not tried to add an address.
I even threw out the cache from my user library for the address book that says Metadata (after I printed out my addresses on paper, just in case -- I don't have hundreds and i can manually add them back if needed) Restarted -- and oddly enough there were my addresses in my address book just as if I hadn't trashed them. But I still could not add any new addresses.
I also ran a check on my fonts with Font book and one was found to be defective so I deleted it and restarted -- no effect.
What can I do? I haven't had any of this type of problem before and I think the guys at my Apple store are probably getting tired of seeing me! Thanks for your help!

The address book database is stored under the user's home folder in library>application support>AddressBook>AddressBook.data - i would save that some place safe (RW CD) and then delete it or move it to see if Address Book regains it's functionailty. If so that means one of the files might be corrupt. Add them back one by one and see if you can have contacts and functionality.
Alternatively you can also try, repair permissions, check disk etc from disk utility (utilities folder), and you can also try reinstalling the 10.4.3 update, i would suggest a fresh download of the combo update (yes i know it's big but it has worked wonders for me in the past).
If all else fails the apple shop should offer a free follow up, usually if there are still problems within a time period after getting it back they will re-service it for free.

  • How can I create a new address book in Thunderbird?

    I cannot figure out how to create a brand new address in which to place 'contacts'.

    I repeatedly followed your above instructions and "Address
    book" does NOT appear as a choice. Presently existing address books do appear but not a new address book. Perhaps I have a corrupted file????? I just don't know what to try next, I have already downloaded / installed a new copy of Thunderbird 24.4.0 directly from the Mozilla web site.

    Oh dear...
    You must be accessing the iTunes Store in the U.S. You can't buy an iTunes card in your country (i need to know this), so try making a new account with the payment option as a Visa Credit Card. Have you bought that Pre-paid Visa credit card yet and loaded money on it? If you haven't, you will probably have to.

    If you are referring to an iTunes gift card, follow the instructions here >  iTunes Store: How to redeem a code
    If you are referring to editing your payment method, you can do this on your iPod touch.
    Tap Settings > Store > Use Existing Apple ID and sign in.
    That should take you the Account Setttings window where you can change your payment type.

    This is crazy I can't find any way to add a new address to my address book in Mail. I want to type in a new address. I do not want to add an address from a received or sent Email. I checked Mail Help and it said to go to File > Card and enter the info. With the Address book open I go to File and it doesn't have any choice for Card. So how do I do this. In Outlook Express you simply click on new and enter the new address. I can't believe Apple has made this so obtuse.

    You ask I want to type in a new address. I do not want to add an address from a received or sent Email.
    OK, to do this open Address Book the application, not from Mail, but from the Dock if it is there, or from the folder Applications.
    Now do you see the + sign?
    In Mail when you click on the window menu > Addresses opens up, but that is not Address Book, just the addresses from it.

    Contact iTunes support, explain the situation & ask that they add your old apps to the download queue of your new Apple ID. If they do so(they most likely will), delete the old apps from your iTunes library & move all files to trash:

    For unknown reason, I can't add any new email account, I get stuck with when I have entrered my email address and password. In fact, the system says " checking" but nothing is happening. Do you have any idea?
    Somebody proposed me to reset Safari which I did with same result.
    I have two Iphone and 1 Ipad and I have exactly the same problem on all of them.

    I finally found the reason, it was linked with my email suffix which was a shorten version. When I put the long one, my email address has been recognized. The strange things is the fact, I have set up earlier the same account in pop instead of imap without any issue. I need to fight with the server name too as my standard incoming server was not recogized on imap (no reason as it works with other system). However, I found my way and it works.
    Thank you for your help. Maybe my demand will help somebody else.

    To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iDevice, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, and your old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

    Okay, so here's the problem:
    I had the first IMac with the Isight camera and the CPU died. So, I had the data backed up to an external hard drive.
    So now I have the new Imac and I still have the external hard drive and I've put MOST of my old data on the new computer...but I can't import my old address book cards. . And I need some of them!
    Can anyone help?

    Address Book data is stored in
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/
    Copy all the files in the AddressBook folder from your backup into your new iMac

    Your best bet would be to try resetting the password to the account that you would like to use via iForgot
    Once you log in to that account change the email address to anything, it can even be fake its just a placeholder
    After you do that you will be free to change your old email address on your appleID to the new one that is now free to be used as it is no longer attached to the other account.

HELP!!
